message for "too stinkin hot" people: how's this for weather? going home from work last night, my bus driver turned grey, stopped the bus on the verge as we were exiting the off-ramp. What he saw in his rear-view mirror was a megaton 18-wheeler (truck/ pantechnicon/lorry, depending on your location) topple over on its side. Then a second. Then a third. whoosh, horrendous crash, shrieking metal sliding across the highway off the Bay Bridge. Another passenger called up the news on his hand-held whatsit and got the report of 75mph winds gusting to over 100. ... Soaked to the skin when I got home but there seemed to be no damage. Except when I happened to glance out the window: where the day before had stood a gloriously fat-fruited and foliaged fig tree was now stripped to the bare twigs; not a sign in the garden that there had ever been anything living there above grass level. Damn. Once in 12 years we get Weather here. But then it's a doozy.

I am listening to this

One of them described it in a sailing term I don't remember, the feeling when the sail isn't properly secured and the wind catches it full in the wrong place and tips the boat over -- the wind just caught him broadside coming around the curve. gifted - I always tell Kim that she got in line twice when they gave out brains, luck, and drive :)

When Kim was in elem. school they had a program that the kids attended one day per week - all day
hands on gifted class
All children have "gifts" some more markedly so than others. They should most definitely be nurtured, but not defined by them.
The disconnect is a problem though. I have a sweet little boy in my practice, age 5, with Asperger Syndrome--very anxious and with trouble socializing, yet reading at 4th grade level. He started reading at 2 1/2 yrs. He fascinates me yet the school system cannot meet all of his needs.
when she got to middle school the classes were seperated - what i didn't quite agree with is that her group got all the top teachers
As a parent, I'm as proud as the next guy. Such labels tend to be more for parents, than the kids. With those strengths, are associated weaknesses, some obvious, some not.
I agree, Lori. Have you read the book, "Multiple Intelligences?"
I thought those teachers might be better for children who needed more help
Schools are the limiting factor in identifying how kids learn best, and their strengths and weaknesses.

Oops. Trial words ended up in the wrong spot! Sorry to hear about your problems, mrp--I firmly believe that one should not tolerate nasty behavior from family. Obviously, there is a way to say things and a way not to, but it is important that people be given the responsibility for their own behavior. We've been using "Parenting Teens With Love & Logic" in our house--and I've found the principles from the book work at the office and with my spouse, as well. Much easier to get along with everyone now, and I'm no longer a doormat.
