i had a girl in my class last year that suffered all year long with recurring urinary tract infections while her parents treated her with cranberry juice, water and suppliments because they didn't have insurance and couldn't afford the office fees to see the dr.
it's easy to be angry with the parents, but when it's a choice between putting food on the table and going to the dr., it's a hard place to be.
here, mama, she could see the doctor, but without insurance, probably couldn't afford the prescription (they're not covered by provincial health plans - nor are eyeglasses, dental care....)

we suppliment our provincial health plan with blue cross(150 per month) and that covers eyes ,teeth and drugs
generic drugs and samples would have covered it. and there are lots of agencies who would have paid for the meds.
our health systems have the potential to be good ones (i wish they were federal, instead of provincial), but folks who cannot afford supplementary insurance are in the same boat here as down in the states. for instance .. an indigent diabetic would not be able to afford testing strips or insulin

what blows me away is that the hospitals/doctors set prices. then they make deals with insurance companies to discount those prices, sometimes by as much as half, but the uninsured person who has no means of help will be expected to pay the full price! It's ridiculous!

I was getting daily shots to stimulate white blood cells ... at $4000 a week ... and a bi-weekly shot for red cells ... at $1500 each ... ... OHIP or whatever we call it now covered it ... the doctor just gave me the shots ... if I'd had to pay ... I would have had to tough it out
Our system is not perfect but for 'everyday' type health care it is there. The more serious and complicated cases are just that....

... worked great ... never really experienced sickness ... ... took antinauseants before the treatment but not between treatments ... ...
even got 2 or 3 transfusions as i recall
you are lucky,i had to sign a waiver everyttime i got blood products
... yeah ... lost forty pounds ... but had forty pounds to lose ... ... I had a lot to be thankful for ... I got to watch a lot of people ... and several quite young people ... suffer a whole heaping lot more than me ...
indeed dose,when i was at princess margerettes,i saw stuff that still haunts me..my cancers were nothing compared to some poor souls
was hardest watching the kids
... yeah ... 25 year old finished her treatment same day as me ... she was having surgery over Christmas ... I cam in for a checkup at the end of January ... she had died on the table ... I cried ...
was one little girl abou 6,no hair getting her treatments,too thin and she was telling me that when all her treatments were done,she was going to get her own pony..found out later from her mom that she has brain cancer and would probably never leave the hospital;9

In Edmonton, our young cancer patients are treated in a separate hospital ( Stollery Childrens' Center ) ...everyone else at the Cross Cancer Clinic.... I didn't see the little ones,... but their attitudes can teach us some things ... I used to visit at the Cross years ago, and these little ones , although sad to see, put a proper perspective on things sometimes.

crossy -- i whipped up some pasta sauce with a can of diced tomatoes, a can of tomato sauce, a can of tomato paste + a veritable BUTLOAD of fresh veggies (thankyou farmers market!) and i served it over the spaghetti squash i also bought at the farmers market (this $1.50 squash will yield 3 meals, thankyou!) and i topped it with a bit of parmesan cheese (which is where that one piont came from)

mosquitos here are very localized, depending on where has has a lot of storms
And where they treat the standing water Seain. They quit treating the creek behind my place years ago and we have a real mosquito problem because of that.
and standing water and cedar groves are prime areas of mosquitos

I thought Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was a rubbish film. The book was far better.
O that film was trash. It was horribly done and cut to pieces. Even if you didn't read the book the film didn't make sense

i liked the sarah jane adventures a lot. have the DVDs. although sometimes it did seem to aim a bit too young, but if i had to compare it to DW, it was a lot closer to the old DW than torchwood! (Yes, very sad about Ms Sladen, she was effin cool)
