its good thats she's up and about, when my 84 yr old mum broke her hip a few months ago, they got her up and about as soon as possible.....she's going great guns now.

hubby just had surgery for a bad tear in his left knee; surgery was done on 11/30 at 7:30 AM, and we were on our way home by 10... he was going without pain med by Thursday night... already has a great deal of mobility back and very little pain now... don't wait to have your tear fixed, ru
he even walked up our stairs the day of surgery

bichon,our child is adhd and we had issues with ritalin over the years,then went to dexadrine and am now on adderal
After many years of feeling very uncomfortable prescribing stimulants for kids with "ADD" just because a psychologist told me to, I stopped 6-7 yrs ago. I always felt that I was letting down the child by prescribing a pill instead of teaching the kid and parents new skills and strategies.

One of my partners tried her son's Adderall and said, "Wow, I love this stuff! So much energy. I can get so much done." We would all thrive on amphetamines but caffeine is safer. I believe that much of "ADHD" in adults is multitasking and busy-ness.

Schools do not tolerate the behaviors of normal boys. Boys, and girls too, are not meant to sit at a desk all day.

Speaking of which... A woman just came in to make a bullying complaint. Her 12 year old is being harassed & bullied at the Catholic School. School suspended her son because he defended himself agains the bully. No action against the bully. Oy vey.

ALL kids have issues with inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity! It is the normal state of toddlers. But kids must be taught self-control, self-discipline, etc.

here we are getting suicides from bullied kids..problem just goes under the teacher radar it seems or the bully gets a slap on the wrist

he is already starting to break away from the chains of the high school system,he has shown a natural ability in auto body/mechanics and is doing co-op this year to get hands on in the field,then he want to go right to the college course;))
I am so impressed with home-schooling parents and kids. Well-behaved, self-disciplined kids, eager-to-learn kids that advance academically.

So much of classroom time is wasted because of so many poorly disciplined kids disrupting the class.
It's the best thing I've ever done as a parent. Your patients are lucky to have you. Many pediatricians give the hairy eyeball of suspicion regarding homeschooling. Hey fruity!

My kids are in a good public school now, although I still wish we were home schooling the younger two but husband was tired of it consuming the family, or more accurately, consuming his wife who was done talking to people for the day before he got home! ;P
my sister is going to do it, possibly in concert with some time at a private school that she's been visiting which treats kids very differently. i'm SO glad my energetic nephew won't be subjected to public school at a young age.

There are some outstanding school teachers that recognize each child's learning styles, strengths, weaknesses, and who command respect from the kids, who have excellent classroom management skills, but too often parents share with me the problems of their kid not being challenged or helped or even taught the basics.
I can relate, fruit. Oh Hurshy, if he is energetic they'd want him medicated immediately. Crossy - our laws vary by state. Are Canada's uniform for the entire country?
i've seen some cautionary tales of people who 'home school' and never make their kids do things they don't want to do -- not into reading? fine. not into math? fine. How about the whole day playing video games? fine. It tarnishes the reputation of those whose kids become true learners.

Boys are the primary victims of the educational system. They are quickly labeled as having ADHD and meds are advised.
I volunteer a lot in our school now and am employed on .25 time basis but the kids know that when I say a teacher majors on 'lining up' that I'm unimpressed with the focus ;-)
10% of 11 yr old US boys are on meds for "ADHD."
I see most teachers as victims of the "system" themselves. It doesnt' matter how good they are if they are forced to "teach to the tests" and manage 30 distruptive kids.

Human Resources depts have been challenged by so many undisciplined twenty-somethings that do not understand respect, responsibility, resourcefulness, etc.
Amen, Krista. The pressure they face on test scores mean they focus on getting those borderline kids over the line and not challenging the ones above the line or intervening with those far below the line. I think our school does a far better job of that than many do or can. The area we moved into has more money than surrounding areas. Parents are hugely involved -- 100% turnout to parent-teacher night, etc. Makes a difference

I confess to being bothered by the fact that this child is always consulted, is always given choices.. not good.. she now negotiates everything, and some things are NOT negotiable, like "should I stop at that stop sign or not?"..

I'm one of the older homeschooling moms in my circle of friends, and I know most of my friends think I'm a hard-ass because I make my kids show respect. And I was raised by older parents, so I probably am too old-school for the home school, lol.

we are lucky here hoots,we set up a historical preservation society in the mid 80,and any historical building owner can get funds for 50% of any and all renovation/repair costs as long as he does not disturb or destroy the buildings historical qualities

There is a huge glass sheathed pyramid right off the main highway that is the first thing anybody going or coming from here sees. Even has a statue of Rameses at the entrance. It's been closed for 6 years and now they are maybe, suposedly, possibly going to put a Bass Pro in there!

The architecture in the pictures I've seen of Oxford is gorgeous.
Oxford is beautiful, it really is. They cope with the traffic problem by having huge out of town car park and ride schemes.
That is nice. Because nothing takes away from the beauty of a place than lots of traffic.
It proves that you don't have to knock things down just because people have cars. The other advantage is for pedestrians, no dodging cars.
I've heard about some islands along the east coast here that don't allow cars. Bikes and golf carts only. I think I'd like that.

that's the high-volume cartridges, supposed to print 500 pages each, the 170-page ones are cheaper
mine is laser,would not think there are many ink jets out there anymore

i have re-read a few books recently that i first read about 30 or more years ago and those I can enjoy ahgain, but there is a public library within easy waking distance of my new home so I shall just borrow the fiction i fancy

I have finished the grid. Now I de 4/6 it necessary to do a story of clues for those who ne 4/5. When I got home from work, I was happy to open the do 4/5 of an empty house. That meant that I was fr4/7 to babble al 5/10 in peace. However, it was an er 5/10 on my part to think I could babble in peace. Hubby came home an hour later and was a he 4/5 as usual. He teased me and called me a do4/9 for babbling as soon as I got home. He has told me I've gotten do 7/48 as I get older. Then my husband accused me of dr5/12ing over men in the chat log.He ir 5/20 me so much, I wanted to kick him in the arse with my fo 4/7. I immediately logged off & began preparing fo 4/8 for our next me4/5 so we would not into a fight. Now he wants the laptop again, but I told him to take a hi4/9. He wasn't too ke4/8 on that idea,but he left the room. I don't care if I ir 4/5 husband. I of 5/16 give up the computer, but not this time. I'm here to stay for the night! Even if he comes back and pl4/5ds for computer, I'm not giving in. This is still the end of my story though. I hope that this has he4/6ed some of you. I am going to go change my ik 4/8,but I'll be right back to clue more.

hard to say, nef. dark out, couldn't see them well. one's pretty thin, one's a little underweight, one looked okay. will do dental checks/whatever dental work they need and check for parasites tomorrow. and the farrier's coming tomorrow to do feet

Une, most of my relatives have died right around the Holidays dating back to before I was born (my maternal grandfather died on Dec. 26th while my Mom was pregnant with me). I've always considered it a blessing to have the memory of them with me through the holidays.
a lot of people die during the holidays.. as it is important for them to enjoy the holidays with family and friends
my dad died in January as well (many yrs ago) -- not a great month . . .

my mom died 6 days after my birthday. My Dad a week before my birthday. My brother on my daughter's birthday. There...I can be morose too.
My Mom die Jan. 8th (when I was 8), DH's grandmother died the day before Thanksgiving; his mother died Jan. 16th, my Grandmother died Nov. 29th; my Grandfather died Dec. 26th, etc. I just feel their presence at this time of year
I 'd have to smoke 4 packs of cigs, drink a pitcher of manhattans, and gamble several thousand dollars to feel his presence

And it doesn't make me feel morose; it reminds me that these people played an important part of my life and they (or their memories) are still here with me

When I take out the Christmas decorations, I fluff up the squashed tin foil garland of my Moms; straighten up the wilting holly leaves of my Grandmothers'; try to touch up the faded ornaments that were DH's Grandmothers; and; once they are all on the tree; I can "see" them all with me again. (and yes, I am a sentimental old fogey too!)
same here, nef -- i'm lucky to have lots of wonderful memories -- and I'll always remember my mom whispering "shhhh, I think I hear reindeer on the roof!"
LOL! My uncle used to "shoot Santa" every year after midnight Mass was done. We'd have a houseful of company; and all of the cousins would rush down stairs hoping Uncle Chris didn't hurt Santa! :-)

I have lost my entire family. They are still living...I hope. My youngest daughter's husband attacked me in my wheel chair and I called 911...had MRI torn tendons in my arms and injured rotater cuff and some other things in my arms. I do believe he would have killed me if she had not been there. So, by calling 911 I lost my two daughters, two grandchildren and one great grandson. So the holidays are really rough. This all happened in 2009. Just when I think I'm over it....I'm not. My heart is broken.
