After uch a miserable Spring, our weather has been mostly grand

so I've heard. We've been very lucky since mid-June; it was horrible before that so there's virtually no fruit this year
i have about 8 fava/broad bean plants and only 2 have pods - my french beans are juyst starting to flower but were planted 8 weeks ago
some of my chard has grown, some grew a couple of inches and have stopped growing
the fruit trees have zippo except the apple which I don't pick because we don't spray and I'm afraid of worms. No plums, cherries, negligible raspberries
how do you cook chard to remove the bitterness?
never found any bitterness - i cook the stems very gently in a closed pan with a little butter, and the leaves just like spinach - either young raw in salads, or cooked with a tiny amount of water
I will try next year
in the US south, they make it with "fatback", whatever that is
easy to grow and looks very pretty if you get the 'bright lights' seeds - all pink and oramnge and yellow stems as well as white
off to hang the washing out in the sunshine!!!
I can't do that here (not that lazy me would anyway) ecause of the insects

Oh gosh! Mae Culpa!! It was probably one of the funniest things I ever witnessed. It was held in Rathmolyon (pronounced Rath Ma Line), which is a teeny tiny hamlet in South Meath. They closed off the (one and only) street in the village, and set up a miniature horse-race track. They had the 6 piglets - all wearing the little race-coats - in stalls, and on the whistle, they released them, and they ran like the clappers. It was just hilarous.

just got it yesterday, red... drove home to plop it in my lake, and found the rain that we had been praying for for weeks.... so had to wait until today. and it was fabulous (had tried it at the pond when i bought it yesterday so i knew i loved it)
ahhh well, it will be great. I am annoyed we are getting thunder but no rain.
i'm not a sea kayaker.... nice quiet lake half mile from my house.... 40 minutes or so takes me around it nicely

oh .. i was telling myself "good work" when i managed to get the boat off the car rack, in the water, and then back out of the water and ONTOP of my car all by myelf! and remembered how to work the straps to the rack. that impressed me
