oh jilly -- it was LONG! Even as a sub I take so long to get out of the building. I turned my key in early and then went back to finish up in the classroom. Two hours later I was home...
My feet hurt -- I had a blister on one foot and even though it was better I still couldn't stand to have shoes on for very long. So I was standing on the concrete floors in stocking feet. (which probably explains the low back pain this evening)
I think subs have the toughest job...but I know my Mom spent hours working after getting home as a teacher
otherwise, it was a great day -- two days in the same classroom, wonderful kids, good friends to co-teach with, and beautiful weather (outdoor recess). Can't complain!

And she really spent time when she got her first job...did get easier as the years went by..
yes, I was up until ten last night making sure I was ready for today! LOL
I love teaching -- ALMOST everything about it is either interesting or fun, and usually both at the same time.
I spend about 8 hours a week just preparing for one 2.5 hr teen youth ministry meeting...I can only imagine...

I think I mentioned my mom was an educator - bilingual elementary ed...her first post was as a sub in a HS with all the delinquents. She had that job for the better part of a year 'cause the regulars couldn't hack it...
well, as you said jilly -- it gets easier as time goes on. You learn to streamline a lot of things, and start to release some of the responsibility to the kids. After all, it's THEIR education, they are capable of shouldering a lot!

your mom must be wonderful, PAV -- I don't mind working with kids who have behavior issues (if I know they have them and aren't just feeding off the others in the class), but I don't think I would have the ability to keep a whole class safe long-term.

I just went home crying last year the couple of times I had classes where there were real behavior issues... I knew it wasn't "me" but I still felt horrible about how things got out of hand. Unfortunately most schools don't really want to invest any time and energy in helping subs understand how to work with truly difficult, intransigent (sp?) kids.

I like all ages, actually -- physically the youngest ones are more demanding than my body can do for very long. But the middle school kids, who are pretty snarly from start to finish are my favorite group -- when they finally warm up to learning, they are tenacious and so engaged!
