Ah, rows -- I grew up in Shanghai -- what are you doing htere?
hi mel
i'm a teacher here
What school, rows? I was there long ago -- 1928-1939
Clues are up
ty Lickety
well it's not a school that was around then
top row grey (:
Thank you, Lickety!!
it's a kindergarten that is a HK based company
hi VMD, jilli, Erda, Lickety

I know that too, Rows -- my Shanghai was the International Settlement and the French Concession -- all gone -- my school was the Cathedral Grils' School -- on Avenue Haig -- and so on. Pootung (now Pudong, I believe) was just shacks.
wow, crazy
You may need to close Babble and come back, rows
yes, Pudong
hello everyone :)
I live in Puxi
fi8
okay brb
Where is that, Rows? I have no idea.
ty mcleach fi 5/6/8
haha Puxi is the west side of the river that's all
which F? bottom F I assume
Pudong = east side, Puxi = west side
yes bottom f
you know, in Mandarin, dong = east, xi = west
isn't puxi the place with that beautiful bridge
ahhh got it tyvm
we have a few bridges but i don't think they're really known for being beautiful
but they're not ugly
yw
nampu or something like that?
nampu or something like that?
there is the Nanpu Bridge, yes
I never learned Mandarin although my dad was fluent. My mother spoke kitchen Chinese and I only picked up a few words. Plus pidgin English.
guess i didn't know it was that well known
yeah... i have to speak Mandarin here, it's the only way to survive as a single woman with no Chinese family lol
I only know the Soochow bridge,,,I think.
and yes i know the pidgin English fairly well haha
i have to speak it sometimes too
Suzhou bridge?
i don't really know it... but yeah, it looks like Pinyin was not around when you were living here
has the 7 been called?
probably -- we used the Wade-Giles transliteration -- not pinyin
I don't think so
yeah. pinyin is very useful, and pretty consistent
makes it a lot easier for a foreigner to learn Chinese
I like the east ding province

It was Nanking Road, continuing into Bubbling Well Road. At one time we live in an apartment house on Yu Yuen Road, near Jessfield Park and the zoo. Wonderful times -- for us.
<----laughs a little joke
quietly by himself
(now Nanjing Lu or something)
Now it's Nanjing Road... we have East Nanjing Road and West Nanjing Road. none of the roads have western names anymore, like "bubbling well" and there is no "jessfield park" i don't think

no Cos
Jessfield Park is now Zhongshan Park
ah i see
has a color in it cos
have you been there?
not that the name Zhongshan makes much more sense than Jessfield... there is no mountain near it
Zhongshan = middle mountain
and yes i've been there
ah ha its a pl.. ty nbt/nbs
well, as I recall, there was a slight hump there, and a big mulberry tree.
Is that because Sun Yatsen's Mandarin name is Zhongshan?
i don't know
Hi everyone, another nice little one, busy day tomorrow
i have no idea who that even is
is it?
or was?
You don't know who Sun Yatsen is?
He was the first president of China after the end of the last dynasty.
chinese leader long ago
oh okay
and no, i don't have my Chinese history memorized... i was never good with history to begin with
I know that Taipei's main street is Zhongshan Bei Lu, named after Sun Yatsen.
Which is why there's a holiday on the Double Tenth -- the tenth day of the tenth month.
ok halfway, gn all
it's likely that the same is true for our park then
double tenth? i only knew about the double ninth
and it's on the lunar calendar
Ah yes, jan, Sun Yatsen would be honoured in Taiwan.
gn cos. halfway here, too have the 7 and 8, but for from nbt.
It is one of the few things that ROC and PRC agree on.
Sorry all -- having too much fun reminiscing about Shanghai
That, and that Mandarin should be the official language. Though it's called guo yu in Taiwan and putonghua in China
oh, you're talking about the National Day holiday
i've just never heard of it referred to as Double Tenth
well jilli you don't have to apologize to me - i enjoy your reminiscing. it's really interesting to someone living here now :)
what an ugly grid this is!
There. > halfway, both ≥ 7, nbt and nbs. Clues anyone???
Ironically, my dad, who was a Scot born in Shanghai of missionary parents, and who worked for the Chinese Postal Bank, died on the Double Tenth, 1966, in New York.
OK, I'm officially old(er). just [command] +ed twice to get a big comfy text size.

I'm learning a lot about CHina tonight! Thanks, all.
I'm scheduled to be back in China again in April.

hehe yw melon
phantom: splurge
This is such an international crowd, you never know where chatters will be from.
are you going to go to Shanghai ever, Jan?
Hangzhou is lovely, especially the West Lake area.
I was born in Beijing when it was Peking. It went through a Peiping phase too.
I've been to Shanghai a couple of times, but haven't spent much time there.
yeah, i look forward to checking it out... gonna try to see tea-related things... tea field and/or tea museum
Wouldn't it be fun to have a Babble meetup in Shanghai!
The Long jing tea is great if you like green tea. It comes in a variety of grades...
guess you want to get the tea excursions in the bag?
That's interesting, jilli, and yes, it would be! :D
That would be a meetup to remember!
lol ruru yes
I was taken to Hangchow (old sp) as a kid to witness the famous Bore but it didn't happen.
famous Bore?
isn't glen beck the famous bore?
I have Tetley's green tea with honey-lemon-ginseng every day for luch at home. Very refreshing.
the local Longjing tea is what i drink most of the time
stopping at 89. I think I'll have a cup of tea before bed. My favorite is Lapsang Souchong brewed very strong, very hot, and very sweet with hot milk and Demerara sugar. That'sll keep me up, so it's rooibos chai tonite. Happy Babbling all!
sleep well, mel!
still haven't found the 8 or 9
nice, have a good night, melon!
<---drinking vino
Night, melon...
The bay (in Hangchow) is known for hosting the world's largest tidal bore, being up to 9 metres (30 ft) high, and travelling up to 40 km (25 mi) per hour. The tidal bore is especially high during the Mid-Autumn Festival when several thousand tourists come to watch the magnificent Qiantang Tidal Bore (from Wikipedia)

Hi all :)
Hi liz
you probably don't get the real thing where you live nan
dee I mean
hi liz
the "real" thing?
Once I went to a sherry tasting and I was astounded at the variety...
We get wines and things from all over, ruru

i think i'm gonna take a break.. maybe have a nap or watch tv
like Harvey's?
Bye Rows - catch you again soon :)
Bye then Rows, come on back soon.
bye rows
see you guys :)
usually middle of the road - I avoid the super dry and the super sweet... not really sure why I don't care for them. Guess I'd prefer Drambuie or Grand Marnier, instead of sherry :)
I always thought sherry could be either sweet or dry. I used to buy a hunting sherry that was always dry.
Oh yes, come back soon, rows!
the best is Lustau
Like your taste in drinks Dee :)
they have a 20 year old amontillado to die for
but sherry is an aperitif and those others are digestifs, dee
I'll have to remember that. I'm always game to try them.
True, jili.
I don't know much about sherry, more of a port gal myself. But I'm willing to learn!
dry sherries you can have with dinner jilli.. in certain cases
I suppose so, ru -- depending...

<-- loves the snail
hi
we have 2 kinds of snails here: large brown ones (probably edible, but not worth the trouble) and small, beautiful yellow and black ones
eating snails is not something i like to hear/talk about :P
sorry
when you buy them here, they're all prepared and you just pop them in the over
oven*
fo 6/36.....plump.stodgey
buy them how? already dead?
and that's depressing :(
i think of snails how many people think of cats or rabbits or dogs
i had some as pets before
yes, back in the shell with garlic/parsley butter and you just need to put them in the over. They're wonderful, not icky at all
yeah, depressing
I guess I like all animals, even reptiles and insects, just not worms
I have two Chinese dogs, chow chows and they are magnificent!
i'm stuck on the wo 4/9 ... looks like woou is the only option for the clue, but it's not a word
oh never mind
i got it :P
it is a racial slur about Italians, surprisingly allowed
a pejorative
hello BR
Hello
JT has what I would consider unorthodox views on words.
who is JT?
scrabble, in general, allows many racial slurs and bad words but is very selective about foreign foods. Go figure!
Dr_God's name is Jamie Tibbets
aaah

sorry, not a word

the series goes: can you forgive her? phineas finn, the eustace diamonds, phineas re5, the prime minister, the duke's children.
ni6 rhymes with fi6
does the author include a character akin to his last name?
thanks
not really.
Lady Eustace was a bit of a rotter, but very refined.
a BIT of a rotter! i actually found her ok in the BBC show, made me think of scarlett o'hara a bit, but then in the book i just hated her.
ack have to go get ready bye for now
Bye, hurshy. She's definitely worse in the book.
ttfn hurshy
i always find the books better
Having said that, the BBC series was very good, it's just that in the books you can read her mind a bit more.

Went with Zack yesterday. They don't have strep, so just getting plenty of rest, Mucinex, and push fluids.
there are so many bugs going round here. hope he will feel better soon. big warm hugs for him. xxx
Try to get him the Tamiflu, car...supposed to stop it faster. This one hangs on and on.
I was boiling big pots of water on the stove to get it nice and steamy and that helped.
I can't give it to them now.
How are you feeling, Mimi?
I'm just getting the congestion under control and it has been nearly two weeks.
hi mimi
Much better, thank you, Annie.
It might be a good idea to get an antibiotic for the secondary congestion/infection right away.
(dawg)
My DH is a bit angry at me. I told dylan to sleep in and then when he wakes up we will decide on whether or not he will go to school. I am tired of pushing him on the bus and then having to go pick him up, so this made more sense to me.
Dylan has been on one.
I am glad you are getting better Mimi

good morning everyone - schools closed because of snow and cold and flooding on some roads from heavy rains before the snow
And lets not forget my mom!

Hi Hokie!
Of course....so how many tranquilizers do you take daily?!! :)
Ooo...3 day weekwend for Teach
hello car - take care of thosde boys
hi, car
my family in SWVA/NETN are also closed due to flooding. They have missed a lot already from the flooding a week or two ago.
retired from the teaching - taking care of grandkids this afternoon
Noticed our "exit remark" is in the grid today.
i saw that
lol
Hi, medusa!
hi mimi
so is ruby's exit remark :)
ur5 please
For some reason I thought you had gone back to teaching WV...hmmm
ooh, one of my favorite candies is here.
Trying to decide on a movie for this weekend....it's between The Hobbit, Les Miserables and Hansel and Gretel....just depends on how much I want to cry..
Ours school is on a 2 hour delay
hi guys
our exit remark should be: "exeunt, pursued by bear"
Hi Rows!
((Rows))
this is my 4th year of retirement - keep busy with my usic and the grandkids
how is everyone?
Hey Rows, mael
mimi, I really liked the Hobbit and I watched Hansel and Gretel purely for Gemma Arterton in leather and corsets
hi rows
so
hi rows, smores!
:)
hi mael
hi medusa!
I'm leaning toward The Hobbit simply because it's one I think I'd rather see on the big screen...the others I might not mind seeing on DVD.
im good thanks rows. just looking for my last word
Especially Les Mis since I'll be crying the whole time!
Les Mis was amazing on the big screen... and tbh i didn't even cry, but then again i guess i don't cry at most films
i have not seen any of them but would like to see them
i'd recommend seeing it in the cinema
I cry at coffee commercials.
Haven't seen them yet either
lol Mimi
OK...good to know, guys. I'll just bring lots of tissues.
I've seen The Hobbit, but not any of the others.
when my nephew was here about a week ago, he had a copy of Les Mis. Dylan was sick, so I was upstairs most of the time. He fell asleep and I sat down on the couch...right at the very end of Les Mis. took me maybe 1 minute to start crying. He just laughed and said, "auntie! That may be a new record!"
is there a clue for ur5 please?
i didn't get to see The Hobbit... and it's not playing in China
musicals and I don't get along, but dragons and I certainly do
I don't have it, medusa. this is slow going for me.
i am more for vampires but will watch anything
One of my best friends is taking me to dinner on Sunday and I so look forward to seeing him always....he and his wife are the BEST people...I'm so fortunate.
u+ do again
ur5....ur and to perform again
no probs hokie
thanks annie. fireworks
congrats, medusa!!!
whooo hoooo medusa!!
I may get booed out of Babble today, but I must ask...Medusa, I'm sure you saw the Twilight movies...please tell me you hated them...sorry, but Kristin Stewart couldn't act her way out of a paper bag.
wow, lots of folks came in whilst i was getting coffee! hi all
congrats medusa
funny cos i liked Kristin Stewart in Panic Room
Yes, she was OK in that but she had Jodie Foster to buffer her as well as the terrific guys...she didn't have to do much but look sick.
WTG Medusa !!!!
while i do agree i do have the dvds. though in my defence i dont watch them and they are just part of the vampire collection. just have the last 2 missing. i prefer things like interview with the vampire. my all time fave movie is the lost boys!
I don't think it was kristen stewart's fault. I blame the source material
Got to scoot!
bye car!
i think i'd agree more with mael... the script/story were just bad
only thing I've seen her in was Adventureland. She wasn't bad, but I can't stand to see pictures of her. would it kill the girl to smile once?
bye car
thanks all
Bye Car...have a good one dear :)
I ADORE The Lost Boys and own that one. Also loved Interview and was glad I read the book first. Anne Rice is AMAZING.
even the best actors couldn't have done much more with it
then again it was Kristin's choice to take the role
Bye car...take care of YOURSELF.
Lost Boys is awesome.
hahahahahahaha hokie!
Definately one of the best vampire movies ever
I know, she has two expressions....sad and less sad.
i have some anne rice books but not read them yet. have so many books!
Do you watch vampire dairies medusa?
I kinda like her in Snow White, she was appropriately sullen
If I had her kind of money, I'd be smiling ALL the time...plus her boyfriend.
lol, Mimi. I know, I always think, if it's that bad, just leave the business.
i have to go hang my washing... brb
right im off guys. good luck to you all and will be here tomorrow!
Do read Interview, medusa...you'll love it.
I LOVE Vampire Diaries. Still have to watch last night's.
bye medusa!
Bye!
I've got to see if that's on Netflix streaming.
Oh yeah holie, you definatley need to watch last nights
As long as we're on Twilight, Robert P. is not attractive to me at all.
me either..
Yes---Vampire Diaries is on Netflix streaming! I just added it. Looks like a marathon this weekend.
Oh cool, I'll have to watch some of last season I missed
He does lack a certain warmth in the eyes I look for. I feel that way about Pierce Brosnan, too.
You can depend on me to keep you up with the Netflix, smores! :)
:)
Gotta say that even though I'm done in the men dept., that Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling....oh, my.....
feh, Viggo Mortensen all the way :)
yeah, they are fine
I do like Bradly Cooper, but Ryan Gosling also does nothing for me. He has nice abs, but his face just seems so plain.
There's a series I think you'd like called Outrageous Fortune, smores. It was done by a New Zealand film company and is wonderful. There are several episodes and I've been watching them back to back.
LOL
Oh, hokie, no!!! Did you see The Notebook?
BTW, I'm LOLing at myself for critiquing all these movie stars.
Have any of you seen the spoof on Twilight "Vampires Suck" ?
No, but sounds wonderful.....Netflix?
I second hokie, ryan gosling is nothing to write home about
No, I didn't see The Notebook. I generally stay away from weepers, because I tend to cry at the drop of a hat.
It is ridiculously stupid, yet hilarious
Pattinson looks like he doesn't bathe. How is that attractive?
Hey, hokie, vicarious thrills are the only ones I have these days.
(Molly)
Not sure Mimi
That's how I always felt about Rod Stewart...his hair always looks so greasy.
I couldn't see my tv or computer last Sun. after Downton Abbey from all the crying.
Hi Molly
BRB...daughter needs my laptop
shh, hokie, I haven't seen last week's episode yet
and I knew it was coming after getting unintentionally spoiled
:(
I won't say anything besides have your tissues ready.
oh I will :)
my husband too, poor man. He got into it and won't admit it
For anyone like me who couldn't get a line-of-sight for DirecTV or who doesn't like the dish, did you know they now have a WiFi version using USB so you don't need the dish? Just found out....happy.
hehe, my friend's husband got into it, too. mine, not so much.
Couldn't believe the "dog's name" is accepted in the grid!! I tried it for fun!
Those monkeys are smart!!
I know. I thought I had remembered using it here or in Scramble and it worked.
tadone!! finito!
morning all!
yay lbd!
{sue}
WTG, dawg!
gm, UU
hi sue@
hi mimi, lbd, and hokie! and mael!
good morning sue
How are things, sue?
morning, babblers
well, I just hit halfway. think I will start some laundry and change out of my PJs. will prob BBL. Bye, y'all.
((welki))
hi welki and wv!
I'm procrastinating on doing actual work
Bye, hokie!
I have a conference call in half an hour, but I should be writing. Bah.
things are pretty good, mimi, I finished my two big freelance projects that I have been working on since last summer, so I should have a little more free time
bye hokie
that's great, sue
Frank is doing pretty well except I have to get him to take better care of his skin
bye, hokie!
Think I have a PhD in procrastination, mael!
Good for you, sue...I know that was weighing on you. Take a deep breath and Babble your little heart out!
I'm trying very hard not to think of the things I must do...very stressed.
I am a professor of procrastination at Lazy University
I still have to work, of course, and we will be moving next month although in less of a rush than I was afraid of - our rental house will be ready March 1 and we don't have to be out of this one until March 30
back
Can I enroll online?
that's a nice buffer, it'll help make the move more smooth
absolutely, mimi, but you'll never get your grades back
hi, rows!
I hate moving more than surgery, sue....
ROFL, mael!!
hi sue
and it will indeed, mael, especially as the two houses are about 1/2 mile apart
i'm at 100 words and almost to the point of giving up now...
too many strange words that aren't really words, imo :P
I have 91 and have slowed down a lot
Rows, I mentioned to sprite that we had a great conversation with you the other day and I thought you were new, but she said you have been here before and she really likes talking to you as well....just FYI.
aw thanks :) yeah i was a member years ago and was on here then
i returned just the other day out of boredom and realization that babble still existed
I did the same thing, rows, except I came back a couple of years ago after being away for about 3 years
I'm fairly new but have already made great friends...in real-life ems as well...wonderful community.
that's great :) it's nice to get to know you as well as everyone else here
I really can't say enough good things about Babblers - I've met probably about a dozen in person now and they are all wonderful people - as well as the many I've only met online
that's awesome
I would so love to get a meet going here in the West or maybe right in the middle of the country....what fun.
well, i'm not sure how much i'll be on babble in the next couple of weeks, just to warn you guys
if you click on the pictures in my profile (the flickr ones) you can see some of us :-)
Glad you told us, Rows....I tend to worry.
my best friend from the US is coming to visit me, arriving tomorrow, and we're going to Hong Kong for 3 days, and i'll be showing him around Shanghai after that
Already did that, sue....I won't put a current pic of me on mine....too vain.
that sounds great, rows!
I'm positively GREEN with envy, Rows.
yeah, i'm getting really excited :)
that sounds like lots of fun, rows!
it'll be nice to have someone here who knows me so well and who i can go do things with and show around... Shanghai can get lonely sometimes
it's for the Chinese New Year holiday i have
OK...have put off duties long enough...must get started on my horrible day....prayers now being accepted....
oh no, why horrible?
good luck, mimi!
You don't even want to know, Rows...suffice to say this was not the time to give up drinking....
haha, you'll make it, mimi!
we'll be thinking of you
{{{{{mimi}}}}}
:( okay, well take care, Mimi *hugs*
Yeah, I'm a tough old broad. And thanks, dear sue.
Can always depend on my Babble family for wonderful support. Bye and hope you all have good ones. ((hugs))
bye Mimi!
you can always email me through the link on my profile, mimi (the one at work - it's a university so no problem)
May just do that, sue.
Right now I need to go get my day started, though, see you all later!
okay, bye sue!
Will leave you all with a new made-up word....splet....thinking of many definitions...like the sound of an egg hitting the floor....
haha
need help with the 8 please
We often have fun with my made-up words.....gotta laugh.
Now I'm truly gone.
it's fi 8/70 ... someone who can't sit still can be described as this

:)
like Spleed for example
:D
hmmm...ponders the many possible meanings :)
and defux
hello
morning TO
HI TO :)
LOL ruru
spleed is a medical term, obviously. bleeding spleen
cutting out two syllables could save lives!
yes.. rapid bleeding in the spleen
:)
down to 26 with that re7 clue. took the day off and i am glad, clupper brought very slippery light snow
same here TO and VERY cold wind...schools were on a 2hour delay
and another clipper may ruin the superbowl party.
We are suppose to get 2-3inches of snow Sat and another 1-2 on Sun.
at least the winds have died down so hopefully won't be to bad.
i heard sat then this AM Sunday...please not Saturday night!
are you going to a Super Bowl party or hosting one?
group going to a loal eatery
it is my bday and i don't want to sit home. I don't are for football.
Oh, hope it holds off for you, or comes in early enough where it will be cleared. How far do you have to go?
Ah, Happy Birthday TO!!
ty smores. it is on sunday.
afternoon everyone
Yeah, but I may not "see" you then :)
Hi Katie :)
hey guys
Hey Rows
i'm bored of this puzzle so i'm mostly just on here now to chat
afternoon all
how are you, smores?
LOL...just read your icon TO
HI Eva

Doing well Eva, thanks, and you?
eh. was doing quite well, then got some unfortunate news this morning. getting through the day now so i can go home and be with the ones i love. :)
and for now, lunchtime.
Sorry Eva :(
hi evaN and sorry to hear. hi rows
Enjoy your lunch, hope your day improves :)
this grid IS boring.
it's not liking me much
finally got to 1/2way point
The grid is a drive through ...fast and uncomplicated.
tr6 is more accurate for me
Hi BR :)
Hello, smores. Of course I have been known to be absent from reality on occasion.
no, never BR :)
I enjoy the occasional "absent from realoty"
*reality
28 left, will be back later to finish :)
Bye for now Katie...enjoy your day :)
fedorete = a small fedora
hey guys... still grinding through this one
anyone have a clue for the te6?
I like the word "tergle!" how come it's not a word LOL
Hey Rows, sorry don't have it
:) sugr
hmm ok
i'll look for other words for now
....looking
found it te6= te, a color, vowel
color? hmm not getting it
ooh thanks
the color of the chinese flag
:) that would be the one
yw :)
I'm not chinese! LMAO
LMAO, now I see it -- I'm seeing *** HAH
good evening everybody
you don't have to be chinese to know :P
{{smores}}
hello rose!
LOL...primary color :)
I know rows, me just being silly
hi ruby :)
:) US and France flag too
Hey Ruby {{hugs}}
well it's on those flags, but more prominently so on China's
:)
i'm getting close... 25 words left
i have a lot of re words left
wtg Rows...61 here lol
91 words but no 7 or 8
ty for the tr and te, smores
i've also probably been awake for more of the time that the puzzle has been up, to be fair
figured there would be alot...haven't listed yet
yvw Ruby :)
i'm down to the list now
I'm about ready to list too
sprite tried to teach me how, but I've never been able to use the list (hopelessly computer-inept)
Ruby the 8 is fi8/30 extends from fi6/36
if you have babble expert it's just there on the left side
you should download BabbleExpert
have to find fi6 first
lol
ruby, it's what people do who have trouble sitting still
I have it, just don't know how to use it, so my modest goalseach day are half and nbt, nbs
great clue, ty, rows
yw :)
the 7 is a plural of re6/30 compound word
hi all! top row done
gonna go brew some more tea now
hi dan
be back in a few
woohoo dan :)
i have 22 left and still haven't done the top row
there's still one f word left

gi4/7
gi4x2
bottom e is a sea animal
er4/6

*SLAP* but not too hard.
I eat those, but hate to catch them when I'm fishing
there is a fish in grid again
i love eating those in sushi
almost fugu
re6,7 combo
me, too, rows
I really miss sushi and good Chinese food. This is a very insular and provincial part of France
come to china ;)
I wish!
having grown up in NY, I am very spoiled about food
stuck on the last two fe words
fe 5/20 and fe 4/8
I always thought you were from Florida Ruby
lived in Miami before France, but originally from NY
fe5/ same as fe4/9 just add a vowel second from end.
<-- very old, lived all over the place
zoo that's not possible...
lol..yes it is Rows
the only vowel surrounding the last letter is the one that i already used
unless i add the vowel after the last letter
Depends which 'F' you use..lol
goes up
ohh
lol i got it
weird word
thanks guys :)
:)
I give up and still can't find the 7!
re6 = primary color + part of a fish
then plural

sorry, Peri it is a letter to add then hair product.
ah, now I got it, thanks
what are the stats for the 7?
I know, Rows but i was trying to steer you away from thinking hairspray type..lol
apparently it's a Scottish word for "buxom"
Re 7/44
the 7 is re 7/44
man, i still have to put my clean sheets on my bed before i sleep
wouldn't be such a terrible thing if chinese mattresses weren't so crazy heavy
for the record, i use my husbands hairspray AND his flat iron...hehe
Is it getting late there, Rows?
wish i'd had my ayi change my sheets before she went on holiday :/

yes Kate- pretty much. i stop by most days, just don't chat as much- which means i sometimes actually finish a grid, lol. Hope all is well with you too.
i continue to plod on, don't get on everyday any more, and rarely finish a grid these days, nice to pop in and see how tings are though :)
:-)
i see that no one can * POP * in and out today... it's in the grid. does it bode well that the first word i found today was the private bit/s below the belt lololol
at the moment, the f's are driving me up a tree- found the 8 right off, but am monkeying for a few, lol
lol- i hope it does!
i just started, the only f's i have are the fi 6 and 8 that i think you clued... thanks!

lord save me from jury duty.i do not know about the states, but here, you will go bankrupt in a month on the pittance they pay you, while you lose your job
sorry maj - don't have it yet
nor do i
Chicago is one day or one jury. $17 a day but I get jury pay from my employer.
I don't think you're able to be fired because of jury duty
here,if you agree to jury duty, you stay till it is done.a day, week, month whatever.though if it becomes a big case and goes for a while, you can do ok
17 a day sounds about right for here.that is just enough for gas to get me to the court house
i've never even been callled for the pre-trial (choosing), but i have known people that hve been called 3-4-5 times... very strange
Yes if I'm not chosen today I do not need to come back but if you're picked you are in for the duration
my beloved has been called twice, but i never have
They called my daughter for a federal jury before she was 18.
mistake bichon?
This is my fifth time being called
they must like yoy:)
you
must have been. I called them and they said sorry.
I've only been called once.
I don't know why? I'm never picked for an actual jury.
.. the kind of mistake, like your cocker spaniel getting a credit card lol
my cat once got a voter registration card lol
Lol
And finding out he's rack up a big bill at the pet store
:-)
i may actually finish today!!!! i'm going to take a few minutes to clear my brain, then go for the last 46, bbs!
back in a few.must see how my garden of time account is doing..poink!
Woo hoo! We've just been released!! Later!

*!* ta da *!*
Hello all *happy Friday dance*
It means plump person in Scottish, Gran Mere.
*Puts gin, tonic and limes out for Jill*
Hi jilly. Oh, I should avoid Scotland in that case. They seem to be prepared for me.
: D Gran Mere
thinking of a nice creamy chocolate butterscotch fu5 in celebration (good thing I don't have any!)
thank you Molly....but better not have a nip until me obtains nbt nbs...LOL
*Takes drink fixings away from Killjoy Jill*
Not so fast there molly....gimmee a few...please??
mmm - when I think of Scotland I think of sticky toffee pudding with whipped cream and ice cream -- no wonder they have a word for plump person!
Mmm...I think of Glenfiddich
or macallan
or tamdhu
I think of rain and being bullied for being English lol
the rain, yes, but I guess Canadians don't get bullied --- you can understand why the english aren't popular, though
when I went up for my Papa's funeral I couldn't get served in the chip shop, it was only 6 years ago. Luckily my brother is better at a Scots accent than me and we got food lol
good heavens - what part of scotland were you visiting?
ah small coalmining village, both my parents grew up there but that doesn't matter because my brother and I are English lol. Glasgow and Edinburgh are completely different thank goodness.
and my cousin was kind enough to move to the City so I can experience the Scotland that everyone else loves :)
When I read your profile and saw the names, I figured you had to be of Scots descent
Well, nbt, nbs and half way...bbs...*poof*
wd jilly
wd & bye Jilly
Of our generation only my brother and I are English but the next one down has loads of us
my relatives are all in or from Glasgow and Edinburgh area, other than the one near Inverness
mind you, from our way of thinking, all of Scotland is pretty small in area
in comparison to Canada it is, mind you most places are
must be off - it's 3:00 pm here and haven't even started the days housework yet!
have a good afternoon/evening
tr6/30 pls
nm
fireworks
congrats peri :)
fireworks for the first time in years :)
Good for you Katie : )
somebody say Glenfiddich? crossy hold out cup...
actually crossy holds out a nice antique scottish drinking bowl. Glenfiddich deserves it
Congrats Katie!! I was away feeding Murphy his dindin.
Bah!! I'm disgusted I missed the Scotland conversation. Went there on honeymoon, and seriously thought about relinquishing my Irish passport in favour of a Scottish one. Beautiful people, beautiful countryside, beautiful!!!!
All we talked about was Scotch, fudge and plump people. Oh and that there is Scottish/British prejudice.
And blessings of Brigid to you Soodle.
Beannacht La Fheile Brid to you too Molls. ITS SPRING!!!!
M
I planted a seed (indoors) this morning and greeted the fair Lady.
Sort of spring like here, but it's February...still really midwinter.
The Primary school my kids went to was dedicated to St Brigid. They used to put on a pageant each year, all about her. I miss those simple, lively times!!
I meant to say lovely times, but, lively times covers it just as well!!!
Oh wow, I miss the days when my kids were little too.
me too....and no grandkids to enjoy either yet
I'm in that same boat Jill : (
((hugss)) for all of us in that boat...
For those bewildered, St Brigid is the second saint of Ireland, after Saint Patrick. Her feast day is Feb 1st. Today. :-). Oh heck Molly, you and me. I lookat3 adults, and say 'Where the heck did these grownups come from'?
<----grownup....hmmm still not there yet..
(((((Jilly)))
and of COURSE I knew it was the Feast Day of St Brigid...one of her quotes is my FB status today..
Rushing offto FB....
LOL....
<----suddenly realized I used po4/8 earlier and need to spend PB time...*calling out to cabana boys and hoping Molly left the G&T supplies there
The po4 thing is getting old. I kind of wish it would fade away into obscurity.
Hi all. Can I have some help with the gu5?

ty cos
did you enjoy your trip cos?
It was fun. Just wish had more time to see everything yet glad to come home when I did :)
i knew a man named sefu. . . where did i know him from. . . hmmm
glad it was fun
Is Paco clinging to your pants leg now?
*wonders about sefu & Paco*
i think he was ethiopian. . ..
lol hes actually next to me on the couch curled up by my hip;/leg
glan sefu is from the grid i think.. paco is my dog
Paco is Cos's dog. He had issues while Cos was away.
issues?
sefu is def in the grid
depressed, non stop crying etc
i am wondering about sefu myself since i saw his name in the grid
tr 6/30?
oh dear Cos. That may indicate that your dog thinks it is pack leader and was stressed because it couldn't protect you when you were not there.
seem to remember he worked in a restaurant here to send money to support an orphanage and school he started in ethiopia
unwilling pack leader at that
so there was a real sefu as well as the one in today's grid?
LOL paco does get away with everything
Laughing at wee Paco being a pack leader. : D
i tr6 through this grid slower and slower
never mind found the tr6
ty anyway jmc :)
I did say unwilling , Mol
yw
well he thinks hes in charge so.. we let him think that :)
Little dog, big attitude. : D
sometimes it is not the best plan for a dog to be in charge
I had two which we called the 'black shadows' because they were always real close behind, and also very nervous
i think i am going to go watch jeopardy. . . i haven't in a couple of weeks
bbl
and I spent a week indicating to them that I was the pac leader and they settled right down and relaxed
102 left
real simple stuff like showing them a snack which I ate in front of them before giving them their food
and only leaving ther food down fpr 15 minutes
and not greeting them when i came home until they had stopped making a fiss and gone away
amazing how much they relaxed in such a short time :-)
fireworks
woo hoo cos
WooT WooT WooT cosdem!
well, it's after midnight, and I'd better hit the sack - happy babbling, see you tomorrow

hey hey hey - happy friday, babblers!
Hi there, welki.

hi dorens
and hello there, peach
hi all. and yes, happy friday. never neeed it as much as this week... long and hard one, at school as well as here
i swear posts appear below others spontaneously! saw dorens' clue, but didn't see peach's until after i posted - 'course it may simply be old age :)
thank you
weirdo word
sure is. i got it off someone else's clue earlier today, but you KNOW that clue was my own
not liking this grid at all
question. why do we always say not liking this grid instead of I don't like this grid?
probably just speech patterns we've picked up along the way
just sort of a statement
i'm finally down to 30 (my sign that the end is in sight) and athere are some pretty weird words here.
okay.. I really don't like this grid
maybe sounds a little less harsh, "not liking this grid," v. 'i don't like this grid'
yes, but I mean we say that here in the grid more than we normally do in real life - at least it seems that way to me
i suspect that some of us behave very differently, in other ways than speech, here than in real life *lol*
...okay .. this grid really sucks
oh for sure. and yeah, ru, that is the real you, right?
don't hold back, ru
don't ask me.. how would I Know?
man.. this is a grind
how many left ru?
persevere, young man :)
5..
I had to list for my last 12.. couldn't take it any longer
can't imagine getting down to 12 without list... unless you got lots of clues from the chog
nope.. just the 7
super brain ru
not feeling like a super-brain right now..that's for sure
it's all the antioxidants in the wine
haha
I think that's what makes me look younger welki
daughter's still hanging in, dorens - babywise - maybe in a week or two
fat makes me look younger. fills out my wrinkles :)
when is she due?
how exciting. a week or two will be here before we know it
yes! and not only do i get to meet a new baby, but perhaps get to meet YOU!
oh you will for sure welki. half an hour away, i will be around
ru, she's due the end of february, but has been early before
that's exciting
know what i'm planning to do? i have never seen the inside of a trader joe's - so that's one stop. and i love shopping at wegman's - stop two. can you see a pattern? LOLOL
oh i'll be happy to meet you at a trader joe's. i've never seen a wegman's either but hear good things about them
mmmmmm ... guess i should bring beaucoup US$
hi guys :)
hi, smores
no, just one good credit card. trader joe's is actually reasonable, but you can go crazy there. whole foods are the stores that will break the bank
baby staying put huh? that's good :)
I love Trader Joes
so far, so good, smores. and i'm thankful for that
wish I had one closer, only get there about once a month
** finito ** last word DE 5/12
well, we'll see about meeting there - might be a good plan if navigating there isn't too hard
wtg teach - and hi!
hello welki
WooHoo Teach :)
i've meant to tell you for the longest time, teach, that my dulcimer looks almost identical to the one in your icon photo
do you play yours welki
fw
i used to - not much anymore. i've had it for many years, many many many years (soooo many years ..LOL)
good going, dorens
congrats dorens
Congrats, Dorens!!!!
WTG Dorens !!! congrats
brb
just got mine about 9 - 10 years ago - now that i have retired I have my dulcimer as a major focus of my time - i am also learning to play the bowed psaltery
difficult to learn? (i'd love to learn the hammered dulcimer)
wow - just watched a video - looks VERY tricky, teach!! double bow?
the lap dulcimer I always say is easy to learn the beginnings but you can continue to learn more forever - have lots of freinds that play the hammered dulcimer and it seems to be much harder to learn, but have never tried it
the bowed psaltery is also easy to begin learning - though i had never learned a bowed instrument - have never tried the double bowing - have only played the psaltery for a year
... and psaltery is just fun to say :)
took me awhile to learn to spell it correctly - kept leaving out the E at the end of the word
has a unique sound - went to a workshop last spring where there were about 60+ on stage in concert - look up psaltery symphony 3
no kidding - listening to another video, so pure
got it - listening
we have a group of about 10 psaltery players locally and will go to psaltery symphony again in April
you mean part 3, right?
i guess, don't know which one you have - last year was the 3rd yeaqr and the first time i went - there are clips from each year some hwere on the internet
the one i just found is from 2012, swan lake
yes, that was the concert i was a part of
last year's theme was classical music - this year it is American composers
oooooh - could one of them be aaron copeland?
unfortunately not - Shenandoah, Flow G ently Sweet Afton, Red River Valley, Tombigbee Waltz - not as thrilled with this year's choices - she posts the music, we gather for four days, and then give a concert Sunday afternoon
it'll be lovely! and i'm off to have a treat - had dental work today, so bought myself a container of creamsicle sherbet/ice cream. later, teach!
back for my last 20
evening all - looking for some clues please FU 5/22
Change the first letter of the cavalry horn, Jindigo
And hello lurkers
found it WHT - thanks
clue for the te6,21 please
Hi all :)
Hi Liz. How are things down under?
don't have that one WHT - hi Lizlin
Drying out, wht!!!
That is good. Sounds like you have been having a pretty extreme summer.
It has been extreme but we're sub-tropical, where I am and so it is the wet season. Until this past week, it's been a pretty dry summer but this weather was the most extreme I've experienced here!
Fireworks
Congrats wht :)
te6 is te + repeat an action or task.
ty, I didn't have that one yet!
Oh look, there is life in the chat log after all.
Hi Molly - I've been out all morning and have just got home, so not lurking! Honest!!!
Liz, you are not a lurker, you're a joiner. : D
That's what I hope! Only lurk if very tired or feel that I can't join in a conversation :)
clue for er 6 pls?
Sometimes the conversations here get very exclusive and it's hard to join in.
Wears away, Liz.
I couldn't see the pl for looking - going round in circles - literally!
And very tired describes my condition tonight, so good night all. Happy Babbling.
tyvm!
Good night wht. Sleep well :)
Hope you get some good sleep Wht
SE 5/16 for FW please
Sorry, don't have it!
s + we were so scared we were on the **** of our seats
Still have 43 left - haven't had much time on this grid yet!
ty Molly :)
Thanks Molly!
It is stupid cold here. Stupid cold = anything under 20 degrees.
Are you talking F or C? If you're talking C then I so agree. F I can't even imagine and I suspect that's what you mean!!!!!! Strange how quickly I acclimatised to QLD weather!!!
20 C is too hot for me!
So, you won't be moving here then harpjane? :)
Even in the UK, I loved 20 C and hotter!
<---Doesn't do Celcius
Thought you'd say that!
I planned my trip to Arizona for January. I'm just sayin;
I'm concerned that I'll feel cold in the Rockies in northern hemisphere summer!!!!
<---Doesn't do metric either. Or Military time. Or the date with the month first.
Sorry, date with the day first.
You might, Liz. My aunt from Arkansas brings her warm coats when she comes here--in July!
That date business has caused me lots of confusion over time! I always do the day first - here and in UK!
I'll bring lots of layers!
And fleecy things!
I went to Peru on vacation this year, it was 90 F with 80% humidity. I got used to it. But my cough drops are all stuck to the wrappers now.
We have that kind of humidity all summer. It's oppressing.
I don't like humidity - I cope with it here but luckily it's not humid too much of the time here. I agree that it's oppressing and even with a fan, I don't sleep that well, when it's humid!
Visited Cairns last winter (2 hours flight north of here) and a woman was whinging that her clothes never dried out properly in summer - I'd hate that!
It's true, you can't line dry in humidity.
When I first got off the plane, it felt like I had stepped into a sauna. I thought, "I can't do this." But it was okay.
<---Always thinks that whinging is singing while you whine.
Usually the climate here's pretty good - no real extremes of temperature.
I'd really miss the distinct seasons though.
Tra la!
I do still get confused about that!
Makes for a jolly whiner. : )
You do see the changes in season through the blossom on trees as much as anything but there's no real spring or autumn! Just a gradual change of temperature. Averages about 30 C in winter and low 20s in summer.
I've lived my whole life where there are four distinct seasons. I don't think I would do well somewhere that didn't happen.
I kind of enjoy the changing temperatures. Every day brings a new challenge. Last week we got 12 inches of snow. Now it's all melted.
The people I talked to in Peru were really amused that I lived in a place where sometimes it was light until 10:00 p.m.
And sometimes it was dark until 8:30 a.m.
It was like that most of my life too - I've only lived here 4 years. I really miss the long summer evenings!
Lizlin, what is your latitude?
Really? It's never light until 10PM here. 9:15 at the latest and that is around mid summer, the longest day of the year.
It
It's never dark until 830AM either.
Just after 7 here - in mid-summer. Also QLD doesn't change its clocks!
Molly, in the States, part of that has to do with how far west you are located in the time zone. We are very near the western edge.
Just looking it up!
Latitude 28 S
ah, you ARE pretty much in the tropics, then?
Sub-tropical officially!
We're at 45 N--halfway between the equator and the north pole!
definitely not tropics in Montana!
London was at 51!
Montana looks beautiful in the summer, but I would be clinically depressed there in the winter. Way too much snow for me.
I say the same thing about Maine.
Where are you, Molly?
East Coast USA
I've been to Boston - in summer and NYC but nowhere else on the East Coast.
About 40 miles outside of DC.
Ah! I lie! I've also been to DC :)
I'm probably prejudiced, but I think DC is a much nicer city than Boston or NYC.
Def nicer than NYC (apols to anyone who loves it) but I did love Boston and also DC - mind you, that was in the 70s!
I also much preferred SF to LA!
Not having any skyscrapers in DC (nothing can be taller than the Washington Monument) I get overwhelmed in cities with tall buildings. I need to be able to see the sky.
I'm with you there. I don't like the claustrophobia of large cities!
I hate the main tourist area of the Gold Coast and avoid it unless we're showing guests around! Most of them feel the same way!
I don't either Liz. Which is why I have no desire to ever go to New York City. Even pictures of it on TV give me claustrophobia.
I take the centre of London in small doses, when we visit! It's great for photography, something we both love - but I can't take too much of it!
I don't do well in any cities. I tolerate them because that's where the airports are! I like to have my trips into a city carefully orchestrated.
I admit I miss the theatre and concerts etc. that London has but I never used those facilities that often!
I don't do well in cities either. I need to have trees and grass and growing things around me.
Me too! Our choice of activities here are beach walks or hinterland walks, in the rainforest.
I would be in an everlasting state of Nirvana if I could walk on the beach every day.
What's the biggest mammal you've seen in the rainforest, Liz? in the wild, so to speak?
I am!!!! Especially in winter when we often see whales breaching! Mind you, a couple of weeks ago there was a huge school of dolphins so close into shore!
You are living the good life Liz.
Probably a kangaroo! Just once. Usually the animals are pretty well hidden during the day. It's just the birds, the flora and waterfalls!
Yes, Molly. I'm really lucky and I remind myself of that regularly! Such a change from teaching in London!
A kangaroo in the wild! Cool.
I imagine the largest mammal you've seen, overall, would be one of the whales?
And koalas too!
Are koalas large animals?
Yes. We go whale watching pretty much every week in the winter and see southern humpbacks. The company invented a season ticket for us! Not especially large - though some males grow quite big. In the local wiildlife sanctuary you can cuddle koalas and feed kangaroos!
hey guys
Hi Rows :)
the flip is in another hour, right?
Cuddle koalas and feed kangaroos, that sounds wonderful.
It's awesome - I never fail to find it just awesome - no other word for it!
Yes, Rows.
hmm ok
Liz, you have an abundance of contact with nature around you. It sounds divine.
i have some time to kill, but i'm done with this grid already
just finished organizing my room and getting packed for Hong Kong
How long will you be in HK for?
That is another reason cities don't appeal to me. Not much contact with nature.
3 days
leaving tomorrow, returning Wednesday
As I said, Molly, every day I think how lucky I am! I never imagined that my life would turn out like this!
(tomorrow is Sunday)
It is here too! Enjoy the trip!
3 pm Saturday here!
thanks :) wow you're ahead of us here
it's 1 PM here on Saturday
And some of the other Aussies are further ahead!
10 to find!
i was also just clarifying cos i know in America it's not Saturday yet
I know - it's so confusing. Still my cousin's birthday in Canada - have to think to get the timing right!
It's Saturday in two minutes in our eastern time zone!
It's kind of fun coming to babble at different times and meeting different people because of the time zones.
yep
i'm from the west coast though, so i always have to subtract 4 hours from my time and then switch that time from AM to PM or vice versa
to know what time it is for my parents and friends
so it's 8:59 PM in California right now on Friday
I do something similar with the UK - add 2 or 3 and then change from am to pm or vice versa!
good night, all. it's been a very enjoyable conversation!
