oh, dear, moon, we are more alike than you know. it was 12 months ago this month that i had a total knee replacement.
admittedly, I was much younger and less patient when I had the knee work. But this is still loads easier on my mental health

I think we didn't have enough soil for them as it's very rocky on our hillside

they like partial shade and good dirt . . . I've been lucky -- just stuck some from Home Depot in the ground years ago and they've been happy happy happy :-)
don't know about the deer prob -- my only plant munchers are bunnies and they are VERY well behaved -- only snarf up dandelion greens and such :-)
my mom's bunnies used to give her fits eating her lily buds . . .

To make you feel better, it's mega-humid here with way too much rain
Now that I'm in a one-bedroom apt. my a/c keeps me quite comfortable. When I had a huge house, though, it was difficult and in the summer my electric bill was almost as much as my mortgage payment.
And, the skeeters are voracious
I do remember the humidity and the mosquitoes and don't miss either. However, would love to get some rain. We are dangerously dry now.
Rain sounds great if you don't have it. But, the green stuff is growing out of control and any walk I take has to be with DEET
Mosquitoes LOVE me. Family and friends always wanted me to go anywhere outside with them because the critters would ignore them and go after me...actually got flu symptoms from the bites...just awful. None to speak of here, though. Will be grateful for that, at least.
There's always the risk of West Nile and Heartworm for dogs [if they haven't been treated]
We don't even have fleas here...too dry. We do, however, have ticks. We still run the risk of West Nile from the few we do have that seek the stagnant water from untended pools and such. I've been here 30 years and have only been bitten by mosquitoes 2 or 3 times total.
Funny that fleas are smart enough not to live here but not people!
Heartworm is transmitted by mosquitoes. So if you have none, then you don't have to treat the dogs or cats.

No, allergies are TERRIBLE. People moved here from all over and brought all their plants with them. So, anything you're allergic to grows here. I am allergic to everything in nature and I'm constantly on allergy meds even though I mostly stay inside. I'm my own worst enemy, though....am allergic to cats and have 3! Am allergic to dust and there's plenty of that here. No mold to speak of, though.

Yep...and the olive trees just kill me...have one right outside my bedroom window. The apt. mgt. does have the gardeners spray them down when they start to bloom to discourage the fruit from forming and that helps a bit with the allergies.

The kind we use (ristretto) is very strong if you use the small cup button and then I put in boiled milk
when you come to France (lol), I'll make you some VERY strong coffee
I grind my own beans, so the whole capsule idea doesn't work for me. But I know a lot of people who enjoy the per cup makers.

I was walking my yorkie last week when a bull terrier came bounding towards us from behind, turned around as it leapt at me. Nearly knocked me over then came again and bit my arm. Fortunately teeth slipped off my waterproof. The owner said "he just wants to play"
Owner looked as rough as his dog so I was just relieved he put the lead back on and they left

Oh, lilliann, Kentucky is a state sort of middle eastern part of the country. Lots of farms and animals and a lot of people are brilliant but there are some who still drive to the telephone company and the utilities and pay cash for everything. I do love them.
