First you have to have the wood delivered to the house, stack it, shlep it into the house, start the fire, keep it stoked, let it die down and then get up in the middle of the night to close the damper, then you have to pick up the ashes
I know Bich, I do all that. And have the chimney cleaned every cord of wood. I just think it's amazing to have a nice fire when it's bitter cold outside.
Then, the warm air is sucked from the rest of the house, leaving the other rooms cold. We had lots of fires when we were younger, but not now. We did use it when we had a 3 day blackout though

Jumping in on the fireplace discussion. I think fireplaces are a waste of wood and chill most of the house. If I am to heat with wood, it must be an airtight wood stove. I used to heat an entire two-story home with one wood stove. Spent a tad over $100 a year on fuel oil but that was mainly for hot water. Of course wood only saves money if you cut, split and season it yourself. Not much of a bargain if you have to buy it, but it does make a wonderful warmth.
