hi, everybody. I'm such a nightowl!
hello melon. how are you, dear?
craftylady, you there, dear?
okay, will pop in and out to check if anyone needs a clue. xoxox
I'm OK, granny. Life's been eventful. So far this year, my son has moved out, I sold my bass, and I'm having hip surgery in 10 days.
I could go for boring!
awww, melon. rock on with the hip surgery. you won't believe how well you are going to feel post-op.
ugh, on selling your bass...did you really have to do so??
It was time. I was not actively trying to sell it, but someone who knew me and my bass had a former student now in college who was ready to move up to a fine instrument. Arthritis has taken a toll on my playing, and I do have the Steinway after all. I had always said that when the time came, I did not want to sell y instrument under duress, and that I would prefer it to go to a young person starting their career.

I had always said that when the time came, I did not want to sell y instrument under duress, and that I would prefer it to go to a young person starting their career.
yeah, melon, how could i forget the piano...;-)...and i mean it, the surgery will make a new you. hip surgery is not as difficult to recover from as knee surgery. i think it is to do with the body's centre of gravity. your hip is much closer. yes it will be sore for the first few days, but then, watch out world...here comes melon.
It was a long process. The young man first looked at the bass in december. Even his mom remembers the look on his face about three bowstrokes in. It was love at first sight—or sound. The kid himself is a fine player, and I had actually heard him play a solo as a member of the Cleveladn Orchestra Youth Orchestra. He has wonderful musical and personal qualities. The family was very thoughtful about this whole process. He looked at some other basses, tried mine several times to be sure. They had a respected luthier vet it. I really sensed about a month ago that they would be buying him the bass. I had priced it well, too. I considered what it would be worth if bought from a dealer, then subtracted the 25% commission I would have paid to sell it through a dealer. This brought it within reach. When I wrote out the receipt, which I did longhand, with a thorough description of the instrument and its two labels, I felt like I was writing a ketubah, the Jewish marriage contract. Even his mom thought so! It was, after all, a good match.
i did tell you i received the piano from my mother's estate?? i know i have at least 6 months of hard work ahead. but...my fingers remembered how to run up and down a scale after over 40 years.
oh, melon...did you have a little weep? it's like saying good-bye to a very close friend.
I had bought the bass at age 22 from my teacher, a Cleveland Orchestra member. It was his son's instrument. So the bass has gone from a young person, to a young person (now not so young), to another young person. Generation to generation.
nice thought, melon. hang onto it...perhaps this young man would like the provenance on his instrument?
Yes, I did cry. I miss it already. I played just a few minutes every day. I felt like I was still figuring out the secrets of drawing horsehair across a string to make a beautiful sound. Now I can look back on it.
I did write him a history of the instrument in fact.
For my recuperation, I'm planning to buy a journal and write about my life with the bass as a memoir for my kids.
Enjoy your piano, grannyrose. Find something easy and lovely to play.
oh, hun. i so feel for you...when i found my ballet slippers and thought of my little grand-daughter just starting out, it brought a lump to my throat. maybe one day, she will look at these old slippers and wonder, what if??
melon, there is something special about playing the piano...i am not sure what it is...but i know i was transported to another time, another place each time i played.
Funny thing is I'm of two minds. On one hadn, yes, I miss it. On the other hand there's a sense of relief from the self-criticism that goes with pride of profession, even though it's been a decade and a half since I played professionally. My brother understood when I said I had a feeling of "thank God THAT's done with!" Practicing is a lot of work!
so your surgery is when exactly? i would like to know, so that i can be praying for you, your surgeon, your surgical team, and ward nurses at the time...if that is okay with you?
Having the Steinway is what makes this all bearable, and the bass just paid for the piano.
That is more than fine with me! April 9th sometime after 8am EDT.
lovely, melon. nice to know it is yours, owned outright...
okay, jotting it done now...
I have my late parents to thank!
ah, nbt!
yes, i remember. strange that our parent's deaths have brought us so much pleasure. i have to wait until the piano is moved to it's final resting place, and tuned. two keys have no sound what-so-ever. :-(...but they are both at extreme opposite ends of the keyboard
yay, you, melon.
just remember to go left with your double ll endings to pluralise them...
ah, thanks!
one of my favorite words is in the grid, one with three Ls and an O. Describes what I do a little too much of, tho now it's a requirement to recover!
my phantom is, of course, allegro!
lol...oh no you don't, melon. when you have had your surgery, you will be up walking day one post-op. sorry to burst your bubble...* grin *
and i will be just at the end of an email to encourage you, sweetie.
Oh, i will alternate walking and l---ing.
I'm so looking forward to being mobile and getting outdoors. This harsh winter made it dangersou for me to walk outside. I am so sick of the indoors and of not being active.
yeah, and your physio exercises...like squats, abducters, heel raisers, shall i go on?? lolol
like i said, email me, i will 'walk' you through it. the hardest part of your recovery is when you arrive home. btw...have you put all your handrails in place yet?
Oh, don't I know. My PT is on me about all this. Benn doing water exercises to keep strong.
ah, email noted. I'm sending you one now.
oh, hydro....so many people think of hydro as lie in the warm water and relax...lolol...have yet to do that!!
thanx melon. i will set up your account asap...
melon, are you booked into rehab. yet?
Actually, I go home three to four days after surgery, and PT will come to me. My daughter will stay with me overnights for two weeks, and friends will be by during the day. I am so relieved NOT to go to rehab. Two weeks of institutional food—yechh!
lolol, so yuck....i managed to avoid it too. i came home day 4 post-op...and you know the rest...
melon, have you got your handrails in place?
I'm having the anterior approach surgery, so no muscles cut, and few or no movement restrictions as opposed to the older approach. I'm hoping to be back at work half days in three weeks. Also, they use spinal anesthesia plus sedation rather than general anesthesia, far safer and far less lingering. I'll be on my feet within hours of surgery.
No, but i have a walker. And a raised toilet seat. And a shower seat.
and you need an elevated toilet seat, and a chair which can be adjusted to give you a higher chair to sit on in the shower. and a chair on blocks for you to sit on around the house.
yay, you, melon. you are on your way..
Actually, with the anterior, these are less critical. tho I am more comfortable at stool height. In fact my kitchen table is counter height, a purchase i made last year.
yes the anterior approach is much less invasive...but there is still some muscles which will need to be encouraged to act as 'normal'.
melon, with a total knee replacement...you are supposed to need no adjustments to furniture and facilities...but it is so much easier if things have been adjusted.
True that. I'm also wondering what kind of footwear, as they said my foot may be swollen for a while. I have some Birkenstock sandals. Barefoot is out as I have wood floors which can be slippery. Ihave gotten rid of all area rugs, too, to avoid slipping.
Maybe "hospital socks" with the tread. And Okabashi sandals.
hmmm, you may need some compression stockings. better to check with physio. as to footwear...my physio advocates bare feet. early in the piece i wore slippers with a leather sole.
Oh, yes, I know about the TED stockings. I will be coming home with them. Tx for the reminder.
when you get up for the first time, it is a good idea to have footwear with non-skid soles.
I used to go barefoot all the time. Lately, I feel my feet slide along the floor. If I had carpeting, ot would not be an issue, but I have paste-waxed wooden floors.
melon??? make sure you also purchase/obtain the satin foot-covers, which allow you to slip the TED's on easily.
My favorite shoes are my split sole dance sneakers. I rough up the smooth spot at the ball of the foot for the pair I use as street wear. It's there to make turning easier when danceing, but adds a slip factor otherwise.
I will ask about the foot covers, had not heard about that.
n ile
they are like a satiny halk sock. you put them on, then the TED, and you can pull them off through the toe-hole of the TED.
whoot, hello nanette
Hi all :)
*sigh* read 'half'
g'day liz
Didn't want to interrupt - you were giving good advice to Mel
*grin* been playing this game too long...lol
It's great that you are able to help.
Hi, Nannette and Lzlin!. I'm heading back to bed. I do like to read the Sunday NY Times on Sunday morning, so I'd best get some shuteye. nbt, nbs, and most of the biggies. Thanks for advice and good company, grannyrose!
yeah....even when i'm not at work...lolol
[poof!]
Enjoy your day Mel
later, melon. hope you have a great day, hun
Hope you've had a good day, Rose.
quietish, liz. went to church this morning...did you see my post about braking hard in the car??
No, I didn't see that.
and has yours been great, liz??
No - also quietish. Sunday's a domestic day here - house clean and food shop! Exciting, eh?!!!
So what happened?
liz, don was driving, he had to brake hard and fast. my right foot hit the firewall, and i ended up with so many muscle spasms we had to head for home.
lol, your sunday...my saturday...ugh!!
Ouch! So, pain killers galore, I guess. But I'm happy you're both OK.
it just proves, i am not ready to drive a car.
Yes, well, I guess these things have to be done and for me, with passover in 2 weeks, there's a lot of serious cleaning that needs to happen.
Well, as we keep saying, don't rush it! And don't rush back to work - if you have to go back!!!
oh, passover....i loved passover with the old lady i used to take care of...and our church also incorporates it into our lent....
Not my favourite time of year. My mum died during passover :(
there are so many parallels between our faiths...
That's very true - and then I guess they link with the seasons too.
awww. liz, zillions of hugs...it is not an easy time of year for you, darling.
Aw, thanks. It is a bit shitty. Just had the anniversary of my dad's death this week, too. All comes at once!
lol, and greek orthodox easter is in li4 with ours this year...i looove greek easter.
I was very lucky to have a great relationship with both my parents.
oh, my dearest friend....hugs and gentle kisses, dear.
And of course Easter is the final weekend of Passover this year, so it really does all tie together.
there you go....
Thanks again. I have a lot to be thankful for here and should try to focus on that!
liz, there is nothing wrong with remembering your parents in such a loving way.
That's true, I know - I love our tradition of lighting a candle to remember people - the candle burns for 24 + hours.
liz, not a lot different ot ours...we light a candle every sunday...when it is an anniversary..
So, even more similarities. Our candle is lit at home, though.
So many similarities but still so much divides some people!
ga 7 pls - any of them. I know where they fit, as I just listed but can't find them!!! Word blindness!
*shaking head* why is that?? okay. okay. it's the males who 'rule' the world...
Some people can't see past the differences to find what's similar.
yes, my dear...and that is the sad tragedy...
Having said that I can't find a ga 7, I just found the one which means lots.
ga7, ga4, bile + 1 vowel + h**, not cold
Thanks. That was the missing one and that was a combination I hadn't tried!
keep going right
whoot, you liz...well done
Still quite a way from finishing!
how far, liz?
72!
It flowed really easily at first but I've slowed down now - a lot!
ugh,,, but still not too bad, dear. do you have al5/14, 6/24?
Yes - good guess on my part!
yeah, me too, lol
do you have all the 8's and 7's ?
Missing 2 x 8 - ox 7/8 and ma 8 and still missing 8 x 7
Just found the ox 7/8
ox7, what happens to metal when exposed to the air.
Yes, don't know how I didn't see that one. Thanks.
*giggle* doing a periwinkle....
Definitely :) Thanks Peri!
Just found the il 4! Always miss that but it's the name of the first education authority I worked for!
8's...el, ma, ma, ox, ta,
Missing ma 8 now, then I've got them all.
2nd ma 8 that is.
ma8, plural, ma8, abbreviation for market, + ***a fitzgerald + circular vowel
Thanks - a new word for me but a lovely clue to follow.
forget the plural...*sigh*
go 7 pls?
more of go 5
moreof the moor plant, go5
Thanks for both of those!
Thanks also, Diz
7's are..di, di, el, ga, ga, go, li, ma, ma, ma, me, ol, ox, ra, ra, re, re, se, se, ta, ta, te.
OK - looking to see what I'm missing!
*hands liz magnifier*...lolol
li 7; ol 7 (and I don't have the ol 6 before it); ra 7 x 2; re 7 (the first); se 7 (the last); and I think that's it!
And the magnifying glass helped! lol
eek, dinner here , brb...
Thanks for your help - bon appetite!
Time for dinner here too :)
good morning all... jeezzz couldn't get into babble for ages!
hellooo, my darling sprite...
okay...sprite has gone AWOL...
I normally lurk but hate to see you on your own Rose
lol, maisie, nice to see you. knowing sprite, she is deep within the grid. not really worried.
That's OK then
yes, my dear. enjoy your game.
and now it is insanely slow and full of red boxes :(
hey all
I love following your conversations. It's amazing the friendship you've built up through this game
and hellooo omni...
no I haven't... I am here... but babble is acting so weird!
awww, sprite, xoxox
Ah sprite is back, I can return to lurking
hey gran, sprite, mais
ah, there we are! And hi rose and Maisie! :)
hi to you all
and Omni too
watching one of the tales of narnia...voyage of the dawn treader.
you are very much invited to join in, Maisie :)
hello and goodie, it's a big grid for later
Thank you sprite but for now I'm off. It's Mother's day here so must get ready to be taken out for lunch
Now we're off to{{sprite}}'s resto for unch
or even lunch
xoxox, maisie, enjoy...hello ruby. {{hugs}} and lots of xxxxx
sprite, ruby?? hope you both have an amazing day. xoxox. catch you tomorrow...
am giving up on babble for now, it is acting too weird
no no, prite, babble loves you!! as do we al
back... looks like I had somehow gotten malware aboard!
woot, everything is working as it should again. Sorry to have missed your company, rose and ruby and maisie and Omni.
spritey...you still here, dear??
yes I am!
lovely...hello my dearest
*hugs rose* Don't know how, with all the protection I have running, but I had malware aboard. All fixed now, thank God.
and is ruby here??
how are you today, rose?
okay, dear. have hadn't had to take oxycodone. just rested and ice-packed.
and dear? how has your day been?
oh wowowowowwwwww! Rose, you are such a hero. And so determined. I love you and I admire you.
*smiling at you * thanx darling. it's so nice to have your support.
my day started shitty, with the computer acting up. But now all is fine. Babble, my darling rose, email sent, and only having to the the taxes to worry about today.
wish I could do more, rose.
sprite...your support is amazingly the best, my dear. and pugs, of course. to know i have it, is the best.
we are the wind beneath eachother's wings, rose (and pugs too).
did you see what happened yesterday?
no I didn't... something bad?
don had to brake hard and quickly. my foot and leg went to the firewall. i went into spasms, both thigh and knee. i whimpered until we got home. just shows i am not ready to drive a car.
i documented it in my diary...info for workcover's doctor...
omg rose... omg. Am so so sorry! You need to tell your back-to-work people and your doctors about that... no way you are ready to go back to work next month. Is everything ok?
lol, snap...
it is now, dear...am resisting the urge to take the oxycodone...so far, so good.
that is really good. *holds rose close and safe* Jeezzz, just what you didn't need, something like that.
did Don feel very bad?
went to church, but only lasted half the service time on my feet...yeah...pooor don...he couldn't stop apologising. it wasn't his fault. someone coming from the opposite direction was speeding. *sigh*
sprite, at least it let me know i wasn't ready to be driving...and that is a good thing, right?
no, he couldn't help it, it is part of driving a car. But he must have hated the idea his braking made you feel so much pain. Poor man. And poor you. Glad you made it to church. Can't you sit during the service?
yes, that is a good thing for now, my impatient rose :D Take your time, don't let anything or anyone rush the process, not even you.
* smiling at you* we do have the option to sit or stand....and you know me...
lol... go sit next time. I know for sure that God prefers you taking care of yourself and sitting down, and giving your full attention to Him, over you hurting yourself and being distracted by too much pain.
i try to have my hand on the door hold...and brace myself through my arm...but this was so totally unexpected...
it is impossible to prevent such things from happening when in a car. Too much depends on the other people on the road.
squirrel?
yeah...so it happens...i accept that...but will workcover insurance?? remains to be seen.
nah...just meds time....give me a break!!!!
they will have to. Use the oxycodone as your secret weapon, rose. As long as you are on that, whether you take it or not, you can't work with patients. Period.
i am laughing with you dearest..
lol well ok then... ;)
you know, hun. when we get together...we are gonna have such head-aches from laughing so much.
omg we will. Don might flee to his friends, lol
not to mention poor ruby...we will probably have to resus her...
oh ruby is a strong one. She will lead us in laughs.
hey, lets unleash don and your hubby on the town....probably won't see them for days....
they should go camping out and canoeing together. Do the male bonding thing.
and i am gonna buy plane tickets to send both of your kids to oz land for a few weeks...
oh niceeeeee :D
if only, rose :) We should rob fort knox. We have so much better use for all that gold.
hey, so long as don's head doesn't go under water. he was bullied in a major way when he was younger. he hates his head going under water.
oh, no, no heads under water at all. High and dry in the canoe. Worst to get wet is hands and feet.
i have major plans to spend ALL my kids inheritance...
goooooood! Go spend it and have fun with it. It is not as if you own them something.
darn it. Owe* them something.
new acronym...SKIN...Spend Kid's Inheritance Now.
oh I am all for SKIN! Let's see how much they want to see you if there is no money attached, lol.
i would like to help my kid's out, financially...but while i am alive...so i can see them benefit from it..
I think you should think of yourself and Don first.
oooh, sprite....has anyone told you, you have a decidedly not-so-nice streak in you??
several someones, and frequently. Yeah. I don't believe them, though. I think I am evil with a streak of good ;)
LOLOLOL...sprite, i love you soooo much
the feeling is fully mutual :D
HELLO LOVES
well that's good, then...lolol
and there is our darling pug! *hugs*
wow!!! it's the pugs...hello pugs my darling..
darn server went down on me
watch out world...the three musketeers are alive and well..
and yahoo I got here just in time--lol
it is a computer issue day, it seems. I couldn't send emails, or access babble. Had to remove malware. Got it fixed though :)
in case you feel left out...looove you pugs.
All for one and one for all, and the whole enchilada for babble!
<---- loves pugs to pieces too
poor babble!!! do you think it will survive??
Love you guys too---lots and lots and lots
on man I hope so
it has so far, rose. We can hopel.
*very happy grin*
I meant oh man I hope so
yeah, on man is pretty daring, pug, lol. I'd say go for it, but pick a nice man.
Sprite I got a notice on my computer that windows is not going to extend anything so I hope I get no bugs--they were warning about that
nasty windows...gonna ask don about that
nasty windows...gonna ask don about that
they are wanting everyone to go to 8 and 7 windows
yeah, support is gonna end in a few weeks. Make sure your firewall is on and a good antivirus protection too.
pugs, are you running xp???
yeah I am probably gonna upgrade to windows 7. Ran a check and my computer can handle it. Not looking forward to it though.
If I get bugs and it shuts me down I will just be down until I can buy another one
yes Rose
yes, just like I am, rose
okay, according to don, it will keep running. let me know if other problems arise.
you just have to be extra careful, pug. Windows will continue running. It is just that the support and safety issues are no longer to be addressed.
my computer will not carry 7 so I will hae to buy awhole new computer
yes it will run Rose but we will be open to hackers and such
yeah. Make sure you tell everybody you know that you need one, pug. Someone may buy a new one and let you have the old one for a bargain.
it did say Sprite that 7 is much better then the 8
pug, that is what the firewall and antivirus are for. Just scan more often.
this imfo was from Windows
what sprite said, pugs
yes indeed, pug. Windows 8 is too new. Buggy and not at all usersfriendly, they told me. Not compatible with many old games either. So I will go to 7.
okay
so how are you guys today
am fine :) Feeling upbeat and not even too stressed out about having to do the taxes today.
Rose, was don sore from the digging
oklay, it's after 10pm here...my eyelids are slamming shut. as much as i love you gals...i really have to go...xoxox
wonderful Sprite! so glad for you
yes, pugs...but it was so worth it...
bye rose, sleep well, my darling *hugs*
ahhh poor Rose, good night, hugs and love
*snore*
and how are you today, pug? Feeling a little better?
yeah Iam okay and spirits much lifted from the message
its to get to almost 70 tomorrow!
yeah, am so happy for you. And better weather too... will do you good to get out and walk down the river :D
I know! I got alot of claening to do there too--that will make me feel better
we entered DST today. Not nice. I so hate this, every year. Rise when I ain't awake yet, eat when I am not yet hungry, go to sleep when I am not sleepy yet.
oh yes, I know that feeling, lol. Makes you feel so useful and good :)
I wish too that they didnt change our time
and a nice break from cleaning the same things over and over
yes, working outdoors is better anyway. Am so glad you are feeling better, darling. Thought of you so much.
thanks Sprite---if I can get that you-know-what to open today(and I think it will) I will be even better
yeah, I can imagine. Here's to hoping! :D
ok, am so sorry, but I have to go. Have to file taxes today. *hugs* to you and lots of love, pug. I hope you (and all sweet lurkers) have a blessed day and a peaceful night.
Ruby, sent me a beautiful pic or her and her dogs

Good day, kids. We got a few inches of fresh snow here overnight.
howdy, scrabby
eeek- good morning scrabs- we have rain rain rain :-)
we got an inch or so last night , scrabby, but that all day rain on Friday did a lot of damage to the trails
It rained Friday and yesterday.
we must face the fact that the skis and snowshoes must soon be put away
but I cannot wait! my hiking gear is ready to go now:))
i am ready this year lol
I did a short hike on Friday--some on mud, some on snow.
day packs are ready. have my Leatherman multi-tool, my Firesteel my Lifestraw and my camping tarp and my bankie. I am ready for anything:))
wow- sounds like it lol
The survival gear is key.
for those who do overnight and weekend or longer hikes, please google Lifestraw and order a few. They are amazing!!
I bought a Sawyer filter last year but might buy a Lifestraw too.
they rock, scrabby
good for 1000 litres of water
i am a day hiker only- havent done the overnite
The Sawyer filters are great too.

And I have an emergency 2-person blanket/bivvy.
some of the new bivvys are amazing!

Hi Read-Knit-Bake
This is Zach
Hi Zach. I have not seen RKB here today.
I can't seem to get past Al Gore. Maybe I should start in a different area!
: D Many people have trouble getting past Al Gore
Sorry, Dobie. Al Go4 is a frightening image and thought.
yes - sorry about the go4.
No worry--it is staring right at us from the grid.
I passed halfway and need a break. Maybe I will return la5. Enjoy the day, Babblers.
Hi Scrabble, Are there two RKB"s...I am pounding the keys in hope of getting somewhere. :)
Morning GFgal....you need to change your profile since you are now the mother of three (not two) beautiful boys!
Mornign Zach...sorry I didn't look at the chat closely. How are you doing?
and now it is time for Crossy's tidbit of the day!! today I give you bookshelf porn!! that right ,pure bibliophile smut right from the dark bowels of the interwebs!. lol, actually it is fine. check it out and make sure you click on the blue tabs on top of the home page for home library inspirational ideas as well as to see some of the most interesting personal, and public libraries around the globe! http://tinyurl.com/pg8xbr5
use the random photo tab to see hundreds of book shelf ideas:)
TY Crosshair...very interesting. Which one is your library?
I will let you guess which one. it is more fun that way.:)
I worked in a bookstore for four years and we tried to be creative in the floor displays of best sellers when we received dozens and dozens of one title. The big round display reminded me of bookselling days!
if you also just type into your browser www.bookshelfporn.com you will get a larger selection of pictures
I like the old country book store look. cozy, haphazard, old comfly chairs all mismatched and placed at random
that wonderful old books smell :)
When venturing out on any excursion, I am automatically drawn to EVERY bookstore large or small that I come across. I LOVE old stores for their warmth, history and sheer intrique.
agreed, RKB. it is a sad thing that big box store are killing ogg many of those amazing "mom&pop" stores that offer the service and ambiance that seems to be vanishing
off*
WHERE IS EVERYONE? I love to read the "chat", but don't chat much and feel as though I have dominated the last half hour. So sorry.....thanks for the conversation Crosshair.
im here, but only sort of....good morning!
hello all
totally distracted by the book shelf porn....could spend all day on that site!
do not feel bad about chatting. it is what this space is for RKB. If someone else jumps in, that is fine, if not, well have fun! howdy trif
Good morning to all!
gm all
lol, indeed, trif. their home site boasts hundreds of pictures
and going though them, you cannot help but think "I could do that!!"
its so great....I want to make some changes in my home this year, and you can BET bookshelves will be heavily involved
make sure you look at the closet book shelf/ reading cubby designs
especially if you have a older home with those deep closets
stats for first column i please?

okay - word nerd that I am, this was the cause of debate at dinner recently.....we were at a restaurant that had a menu item listed as "hot bag of donuts." I maintain that this is incorrect. It should really be called "bag of hot donuts" but an argument follwed....the con being that "bag of donuts" is a collective noun....
well, what is hot? the bag or the doughnuts?
EXACTLY crossy! my point exactly!
so, it is a bag of hot doughnuts

not a reader. just does not read for pleasure
i read a lot as a preteen teenager but not much afte my 20s
but, on the bright side, my library is safe :)
just got to 100 words found
funny thing is i love books
I started reading heavily around 13 or so and had a 5 year gap in my 20,s and it has been full bore ever since:) I have every single book I ever bought or was given as a gift since 1985;) the shelves are groaning:)
twas in the genes at my house, crossy -- my daughter was an avid reader, got her master's in library science, and is a reference librarian (among other things!) :-)
very nice une:)
cross i hate t gie up some of my books but i did. i can't part with them comptely lol
good thing is that she also loves outdoor sports -- unlike her mom who had to be pushed out the door to "enjoy the pretty day" LOL
une what a wonderful job your daughter has:)
giving up books??!! gasp!! I will sell the furniture to make space, first!
well, my e-readers help;)
it IS wonderful -- it's so diverse -- in addition to helping folks do research, she gives presentations and gets to travel a bit :-)
ROTFL cross i know i hate giving up things not that i am a hoarder..or maybe i am lol. I tink its more ofving up the past then the actual objects
Hi All
une that sounds so wonderful:)
before she moved to Maine last year, UMich sent her to intl book fair in Germany and to meet with distribution partners in Paris :-)
brb
Maine budget's a bit more modest LOL
yesterday i was cleaning all the pots by boiling water in them and them in boiling water, so i turned off the heat in the house. I was sitting here and freezing thinking i am getting old, my skin is getting thin i guess....duh. it is 65 degrees in this house an i am in a t'shirt
hey sue :-)
poor Sue.
there is no such thing as a hoarder of books, you are either a collector and have a collection, or you just happen to be head librarian of your own personal library:)
ah!
lol Crossy. Agreed!
crossy, as you know I love books. I found my escape in them when my dad was at hisworst.
signing off for the day..have enjoyed the "book lovers" discussions.... all recommendations for outstanding current reads or new authors are welcomed.
tc and have a good day RKB

canadian bacon only exists in the US and is actually not bacon at all.
i have the 9
Canadian bacon is ham
Here, in the US Canadian bacon is a lean, smoked piece of ham. I don't know what they call it in Canada
please clue the 9 for me. ty

bbl

hello
hi mlf
hi ruru
just found the last 8 I needed , ma 8/45;)
i'm missing one 8
a second m8 8/45 that is
ma8, plural, ma8, abbreviation for market, + ***a fitzgerald + circular vowel
not a word that I have seen often in babble
morning folks
I haven't ever seen that one
howdy jes
oh jes..glad you are here
can I ask you a vet question?
ty cross never saw it before but i like the word
morning jes
sure
go 5/14 is a plant, go 7/36 is more of it:)
yesterday UU sue's dog got up on the counter and ate most of a tray of brownies.. I recommended she go to emergency or call emergency and get the dog to throw them up.. which they did.. it was a larger breed.. so she didn't seem too concerned..but I've always been told if dogs ingest chocolate.. to get them to get it out asap.
did I do the right thing?
eh. as with most toxins, it's dose dependent. the toxic principle is theobromine, and the darker the chocolate the higher the concentration of theobromine. so the smaller the dog and the darker the chocolate, the more potential for issue.
can a mixture of dry mustard and water be given to a dog or cat to safely induce vomiting, jes?
the vast majority of chocolate toxicity just causes diarrhea. sometimes vomiting. Unless you get a tiny dog eating baker's chocolate, it's actually really difficult to get sufficient chocolate to cause neurologic effects.
i have no idea if mustard causes vomiting. the easiest way I know to induce vomiting at home is to give them hydrogen peroxide.
oh.. ok.. not sure what kind of chocolate.. but it sounds like they got the dog to throw it up.. better safe than sorry.. I guess
ahh ok, ty and what is the dosage?
And Sue's vet did suggest they induce vomiting.
yeah.. it sounds like the dog ate a ton of brownies
bad puppy:(
well, if it was in brownies, probably the fat content would be more likely to cause issues - there's not a lot of actual chocolate compared to flour and sugar and butter... and that could certainly cause some screaming diarrhea and/or pancreatitis later, so inducing vomiting at the time prevents that.
I think 12 brownies is a lot, yeah
hopefully she doesn't have diarrhea to deal with today
hydrogen peroxide dose is about 1-3 mL/pound, given rapidly.
ty, jes. good information
di6 clue please?
ty, jes. good information
depends on how large the dog is ... my 30 pound dog several years ago got up on a shelf and ate an entire bag of chocolate truffles; had diarrhea, nothing else.
mm, my computer has the hiccups
that is something too.. the pancreatitis.. forgot about that.. I think sue said it is an older dog.. so that would have been a complication too
now, "magic" brownies or chocolate covered espresso beans can cause whole other issues...
ross my connection sucks because of so much crap in it due fb and getting hacked
cross oooops
yeah, pancreatitis is no fun. and eating high fat foods is strongly associated with developing that
sorry to make you work on a sunday.. how did it go with your brother yesterday.. sad time huh?
no worries, ruru. it's a really common questions, so I've kind of got a pre-canned answer for it :)
first six letters of doctoral thesis=di6
went okay. we all went out together and the kids helped bury her.
d boxes uggh not let me put word in
i did see a poodle several years back that ate something like 3 dozen chocolate espresso beans... he was BUZZING
grant um?
thanks, grant
and the 4th column L gave me nbt :)
l'd be buzzing too. lol
yw jes
a wired poodle.. that'd be something
how would you be able to tell >? :D
luckily he swallowed them whole instead of chewing, he'd probably have been dead instead of shaking because of the increased absorption.
well he was shaking so hard it was nearly a seizure, ru
grant?
wow.. it is so scary.. my dog is always into everything .. I have to watch him like a hawk
had read that giving chocolate to cats or dogs was deadly
another word for thesis...
Yeah, I guess all the information I read about dogs and chocolate on the internet last night is false
I could see the smaller the breed the more the issue
not all of it, I'm sure, Molly, but a lot of places rather exaggerate the actual danger.
well.. hopefully I saved UU from a lot of Diarrhea today
isnt that a 7?
sorta rhymes with after-dinner sweet..
i have di 7/32
and pancreatitis
I am like finding one word every five minutes now
so roughly, you've gotta give about a pound of milk chocolate to a 20 pound dog to start having cardiac or neuro effects.... and most brownies have nowhere near that, even in the whole pan.
does the actual full word end in tation?
no, MLF, just chop the word off at 6 letters
ah.. that's great information jes
so here's a fun little gadget to play with: http://www.petmd.com/dog/chocolate-tox\nicity
I tend to take the information from an actual vet over the internet. tyvm for clarifying all the issues for dogs and chocolate, jes. it is very informative
and dark chocolate is worse than milk chocolate right?
dissey
oops
yes, and baker's chocolate worse than that... but dogs are less likely to eat large amounts of darker chocolate because it's bitter.
and dogs REALLY like sweet :)
hi folks.. lots of red bars earlier, hope they stay away
hi aloy
I don't keep chocolate around the house
Apologies MLF, the di 6/21 is passes away+ present tense of are
aloy i just had some a few minutes ago but refreshed page and they are gone now
np grant
thanks got it grant was not even thinking that word
ty grant
hi jes.. yes, MLF, refreshing did it for me too.. and tyvm grant, needed that one
there are only a few toxins that are not dose-dependent... now the dose to toxicity may vary by species, the only thing that comes to mind right off for dogs that isn't dose dependent is grapes
raisins and grapes I've heard
same thing I guess
but nobody even knows (yet) what the toxic principle IS there, so maybe it is dose-dependent and we just don't know it yet.
Yes indeed, advice from a professional is much better than internet advice
especially one who sees this stuff all the time.. I was praying you'd show up yesterday jes.. and I don't pray :D
so, just a few grapes can kill a dog? I did not know that.
sorry... finished the grid early and then was in town late.
sometimes, crossy. and some dogs eat raisins daily and never have trouble... but you don't know until your dog goes into kidney failure if he's gonna be one of the affected ones, so best to avoid it.
some of the information from the internt is professional
so far, there hasn't been a dose or type of grape or breed association to the cases.
I am going out to brunch soon.. I better get my sh...together..
shtuff?
some is,MLF, but it is hard to weed it from the rest sometimes
yes shtuff :D
njoy ruru
enjoy
I need to find five more words to list
you aren't finished already ru? my world is shaken.
what is your cut off for listing ruru?
20% left
I'm struggling with this one jes :D
cross sometimes i do both
aww ruru i have 137left
135 left here :)
I list when I Have found 75% of the words
<---80% here
same here cos
hi cos
heh. i list when i get stuck; hopefully having more than half by then. I am slacker.
I list when I find myself banging my head on the desk and wailing my anguish to he heavens.:)
jes same here:)
to the*
I don't bang my head on the desk unless I'm getting something out of it :D
i hate when i have one word left for a letter and that letter is repeated in the grid a few times other places
well, you do ruru. I am told that banging your head on a standard wooden desk burns 96 calories per hour:))
HAHA
and it feels really, really good when you stop.
At last! Exercise for the sedentary!
ruru and your head doesnt explode?hehe
half way :)
man.this is impossible
well, at 96 calories per hour, it makes you really think about that second helping of fried chicken
what is ruru?
should we start throwing random clues at you, ruru?
just made it to my cut-off
whew
brutal
jes you can do that for me:)
thank you so much jes for explaining that to me .. I learned a lot..
al5/14 ends like dr. frankenstein's helper
I got that one
no problem, ruru :) i also have pre-canned (and typed) rants about pyometra and d-con readily available :)
missing a bunch of the L's in the top row
I think calling the vet, ala better safe than sorry, is always a good idea.
ty jes
all normal, ru
li4 = straight
oh ... thanks doc
ruru i need 6 more l words total for the top row
yup, that is why they get paid the big bucks; they have da info:)
li7/28 = related to an li4. for some reason, li5 isn't an accepted word because Enable hates me.
lo5/20 is bagel spreads.
all the other l's i have are 4 letters
howdy kje
that gave me one
hah! big bucks.... ahahahahahahahahahahhaha
ahoy aloy!
lol, thought you would like that, jes
jes which li4?
I was waiting for that Jes
to the li4/4 = straight, mlf
just found a goody.. ma8, add the end of the gelatin dessert to a shopping place
how much do you think i make a year, given that I own a 3 doctor mixed-animal rural practice? :D
li7
thaks got that one
ty aloy
Hi Again
yw, and howdy hego!
I'm guessing $120K jes
I will politely guess not as much as a vet who does not own their own practice.
are you back from Sanibel?
about half that, ruru.
Veternarians are grossly underpaid
however doctors for the elderly ARE grossly overpaid :D
you deserve a lot more, jes
Vets who work for others do not make much money.
ah thanks for that ma8.. took me forever til i realized there were two shopping places in the grid that started with ma
how many ea words in the grid?
lol, I see that now, cos!
*waits for Kje to say something snarky*
I was wondering if you had lost your touch Ru
my first try was mallflan lmao
now, there's variation of course - urban and small animal means more money. specialists make more money. but in general, a graduating veterinary student has over $110,000 in student debt, and takes a job that pays less than $60,000 a year.
contrast that to an average MD, who graduates with about twice the debt, but takes a job with 4 times the pay.
Yes, I've heard there is an over supply of Vets, especially women
she tends to ignore me mostly these days molly :D
Poor baby
what did youdo to her ruru?lol
you should get in the wine biz jes.. the rewards are greater
in fairness, right now my income is down because I'm paying off the loans associated with buying the clinic, and my take-home will increase when I get those taken care of, but not to where a lot of people think I would make. Very few veterinarians are "rich doctors".
no, bichon, there isn't really an oversupply - and in some areas there is such and undersupply that the government will waive your student loans if you move there.
Actually, I know one.
maybe not then again. you get to save lives
2 really, they're partners.
currently, about half of the practicing veterinarians are women. I don't really consider that an oversupply either.
They bought a nice animal hospital 25byears ago and have done well.
I think it must depend on where you practice as well. Practicing in an affluent area means you can charge more.
the classes currently in uni are heavily women (3/4 or so) and there is a lot of speculation about why, primary reasons given are that men tend to go toward better-paying careers.
The Vet schools in the Carribbean are churning out v=Vets
Yes Molly, that's why urban veterinarians make more than rural.
Molly, they charge a lot!
our vets are great.. they charge a lot.. but I don't mind.. they are great to me
there are only 2 veterinary colleges in the Carribbean that send veterinarians to the US, bichon. there are only 28 veterinary colleges IN the states.
did you go to Davis Jes?
that's not exactly "churning them out".
no, washington state university, ruru
oh
that's a great school too
I get a senior discount [me the senior, not the fluffs]
vets in France earn more than MD's
I'm having dinner with Phil Bergman tomorrow jes.. do you know him?
it has it's moments, ruru :) I have many things to say about the way students are treated there, actually, but that's a whole different rant! :D
and our vet makes housecalls and I love her
Shrek's love is in the grid, og6.24
hi ruby
It seems lopsided that urban vets make more. I have to think treating large rural animals is more time consuming.
hello aloy
don't think so, ruru... but then I barely remember the names of some of my own classmates. Not really a social butterfly!
thanks aloy
ty Aloy
he created the melanoma vaccine for dogs
jes, I spent a summer in Pullman when 1st husband taught summer school there
it is, molly, but farmers can't afford to spend thousands on a cow they're going to try and ship to market in the fall - they'll never make it back.
What a beautiful place and a great contrast to NYC
(-: at first I just stared at the word
ah, in that case, I have heard of him, just misplaced the name in my memory banks :)
:)
we used to go on picnics along the Snake
tadone!! finito!! tricky grid, several unusual words today.
he's a buddy of mine.. got to know him through getting the vaccine for two of our dogs
Ru dines with the rich and famous : P
congrats, dawger, wtg!!!
i don't really like Pullman, ruby. not enough trees for my taste. but that IS my opinion, and there are many people who think rolling wheat fields are the epitome of pretty :)
My husband's cousin in Germany went to Vet school and when she found out how little she'd earn, she went to med school
yay dawg!
no.. .it's just people who like wine molly :D
I'll drink to that!
cimared to Queens it was Paradise
ci=ompared*
that's the joke.. you go into debt for hundreds of thousands to become a vet and then you have to pay student loans for the rest of your life
that's fairly common, bichon... there are more admissions to medical school than to veterinary school, so it's easier to get in, and the pay is better when you get out...
Most places are beautiful compared to Queens
Really Ru? In that case, I have a couple of bums I'd like you to meet. : P
ya think, Bichon? lol
HA
I already know plenty of bums
you do NOT go into veterinary medicine to get rich. You do it for the warm fuzzies.
Nursing too, Jes.
I was told that by multiple veterinarians before I got accepted, and a couple of the most successful that I knew (on the state board, owned 3 clinics...) tried to convince me to swtich to computer science.
<--into the warm fuzzies
That's why we moved to CT ruby, trees, grass, uiet
I know three nurses and their careers are a little short on warm and fuzzy lately.
No comment :{
*quiet
<--loves my warm fuzzies and they make great pilows
true Molly.
*Puts a flea and tick collar on Ruby*
LOL
tick season has started early this year, probably because there wa no hard frost all winter
basically, i charge just enough not to go out of business... i drive a 15 year old car, and live in a double-wide trailer with a hole in the floor. and I still have people complaining on a regular basis about how I "overcharge" and "gouge". you can't win.
I've found one on each dog in the past 3 days
Don't laugh, she is on some kind of anti-flea medicine from sleeping on her dogs.
I could make a lot more if I moved to city and/or tried for board cert in a specialty, but I'd be miserable living in a city no matter how much money I made.
That gives me even greater respect for you jes
I thought you were building a house Jes.
Hoping to, Molly. Not going to get anything done on it this year, because I got hit with a t$10,000 tax bill.
re: student loans. Took my brother and his mrs a full 15 years to pay of their student loans;(
I just applied some Pet Armor on mine
I'll trade you tax bills jes :D
We're doing it all out of pocket because we can't get a loan. And on top of that, just spent $3000 on Bruce's dental work, and need to go back next month for another $2000....
hahahah laughing at tax bills
only if you trade paychecks too, ruru :P
Ah, I must have misread something Jes. I thought it was in the works.
I'll trade too.
o paychecks here, just insane taqx bills
we were working on it last year, Molly, but it's on hold this year.
re,re: tax bills. They can fight like vultures over my corpse for their damn tax money!
we will probably have a new house to move into somewhere around 2-3 years from now.
that's how I feel, Crossy, and I don't think they'd extradite an old lady like me
if things go well.
okay.. off to the shower.. bye everyone..thanks again jes

have fun, ruru!
My MIL has been dead for 2 years almost and we are still working on her taxes so we can get a clearance certificate from revenue Canada and we can stop giving blood to our lawyer

well the clue was sufficient :)
yep, but could be a sensitive topic - best to clarify
who's in the pic?
that would be a bunch of babblers who got together on the 15th at the somerset doubletree (where you said you got married) :)

hi jes. I guess it is just me
hi jes and bugsaw :)
and Annie!
welcome to a quiet place
quiet is alright... relaxing for after lunch :)
i am putting my foot up. I was ironing and I hate ironing so I give myself goals. After 5 things are done I can Babble again for a bit
hehe. do you also set time limits or word limits on the babble time? I might otherwise never go back to the ironing...
good for you, bugs...I hate ironing too and I have the same goals...after 4 or 5 ironed things I do something I like
sometimes I don't but don't tell! that is why i lurk
Mom ( a babbler that hasnt been here in a while) loves to iron
most people dont iron anymore and they ask me why i don't just take it out of the dryer as soon as it is done...
that is like asking why i don't solve my money troubles by winning the lottery
not very realistic
:)
I just opt for clothes that don't need to be ironed..
holy crap!?! FIFTY TWO words from that T? aaaaa
OMG jes, i didn't see that before i started
me either.... just now noticed it because it seemed like I'd found a ton of T's already... and I'm only half way done with that tile!
I have 29 T's. 52!
I have 33.
I can't find any more
hi harry :)
hola jes
Ironing is the bane of my life. When the kids were small, I used to iron collars n cuffs & warn them NOT to remove their sweaters!
Hi HH,
hi annie
oops just found another :)
phantom: tamale
and hi to Soodle
hi monkey
hi lil
Hi (((Annie))))
we iron nothing. absolutely notthing. the most work we got out of our iron was when the kids were into fusebeads, and I always needed to use it to make their creations
phantom martyr
I learned the collars and cuffs trick as a teenager Soodle!
off to the board for a bit. happy Babbling
I suffer from psoriasis, so I only wear natural fibres close to my skin. Unless linens & cottons are ironed, they look a mess. 😔
I only wear cotton, and I look a mess :)
bye, bugs
I can't abide wrinkled clothing, so I iron. Not my favorite task, but such is life.
Bugs, I attended a PTA meeting at my kids' school a gazillion years ago. It was an unusually hot day. I met my son on the corridor& suggested he take his sweatshirt off. He replied that he was unable to, as he still had his pyjama top on, underneath his uniform....
well, he dressed quickly

how was bruch, ru?
hi jes
delicious.. wonderful
now back to wrap this sucker up
Whadja have, Ru?
I had artichoke soup and Buccelini (sp?) and fresh peas
my friends had more traditional breakfast stuff
Whadja? You guys are killing me with these kid words : D
and lots of bubbly :D
Ah, the best part of Sunday brunch.
hi have no idea what that is, ru
pasta.. big thick noodles
sounded interesting.. it was really good
Back for the last 79
Oh! Mrs Gauche Soodle never tasted artichoke soup, nor ever had Buccelini.... Whichever way it's spelt. However, I had a delightful King Prawn & Cashew Nut Chinese earlier.
Hey Bich. :-)
i like pasta. Had juke for lunch here.
juke?
juke?
Soodle, we commoners read about such things, on our ironing breaks : )
only if you're barefoot molly :D
No clue about juke. Only been to juke joints.
chicken and ginger in rice
<familiar with juke boxes....
oh.. that sounds good
did you have to nuke the juke to get it hot
http://www.chow.com/recipes/29184-ging\ner-chicken-jook-rice-porridge
we don't actually have a nukerwave, ruru, so did not nuke the juke :D
Pshaww. No nukes needed to hotten Soodle!
Sh*t! Did I type that?
yes.
*says three hail maries*
On my knees as I type..
well .. if you are going to be hot.. starting on your knees is a good place to start
heh. so close to the penalty box, ruru...
I'm going to ignore Ru's post @ 3.25, as I know I'll be led down a road I'll regret.
*blinks*.. whatever do you mean soodle?
she's calling you a bad influence, ruru :D
Not going there, Ru. Try your hardest(!), I won't engage. 😇
interesting choice of words soodle :D
If I may steer this conversation elsewhere.. I'm just back from my uncle's wake... He died on Friday. They brought him home this afternoon & he is lying in his coffin in his sitting room, with his wife (living) sitting at the head of the coffin receiving guests. It's traditional here, but pretty macabre. Do you guys across the pond do stuff like that?
we had a wake for my hedgehog... but no, it's not really a common tradition here.
Not usually, wakes are held in funeral homes
that sounds a little weird to me soodle
Lol Jes!
sorry to hear about your uncle
Thats what happens hereabouts, Ru. I've told my kids that I will haunt them for eternity if they do that to me.
we had lots of alcohol, and round spiky food too (swedish meatballs and such)
People videotape wakes now. That I find grusome
that sounds creepy bichon
I have a friend who posts pictures of her and her family next to dead bodies in coffin. she says its tradition. its weird because she posts them on fb lol
she says its a mexican thing?
the worm! i love the worm, cos! :D
allo! come in and meet the missus
The wake I attended today was weird. The deceased was reposing in the sitting room, and there was a rare old sing-song going on in the kitchen. Molly, there were about 20 bottles of Tullamore Dew on the kitchen table. Mad!
I've had clients request pictures of their dogs after euthanasia, one last thing to remember them by, I guess.
that's the way though, right, Soodle? party loud enough to wake the dead, and if he doesn't get up, you bury 'im.
wow you just described an irish wake that sophia attended on the golden girls
hello everyone :)
Your right, Jess. I think thats how the term 'wake' originated.
hi nan
Lol Cos. Art imitating life!

Hello Nan.😊

Hi nan
Yay. Thanks Jes :-)
ty jess
welcome
a's axed! (64 words left... it just keeps going... )
I'm sorry if I'm hogging the chog, but in the US, whats the procedure when a person passes away!
depends on the family, and whether you're cremating or burying.
I am getting cremated personally
when it's my time.. I've urned it
But the timeline? Hoe long does it take? Here, if a
some have 2 day wakes and 1 day funeral. some 1 day/1day some same day for both
There i a big range of what people do. We're getting vremated and that is a growing way to go
many families do grave-side service with reading of words. sometimes taht's a small group of near-kin, then they have a larger memorial service later for friends and extended family
and yeah im gonna be cremated i cant stand the thought of my body rotting away with no one to visit and getting my headstone covered with weed
whoch would be ironic
with cremation, usually kind of the other way - larger memorial, then small group may go spread the ashes somewhere.
lol cosx
Jewish people bury the dead as soon as possible and then they sit "shiva" for 7 days and the deceased family's home. Everyone brings food
everybody brings food to a catholic wake. then we also have a big lunch afterwards to socialize
when my friend died, her family threw a party (no body viewing) and invited everybody she knew as a 'celebration of her life'.
Every time I go visit the cemetary where my father's family is buried I end up sobbing uncontrollably
I'm sorry if I'm introducing a morbid note, but I'm genuinely interested. Thanks for your input, guys.
I'm going to be buried in the babble masoleum
Here lies ruru .. we're finally done with his puns
Jess, that is what I would love.
first ga 7, please?
hah. shouldn't there be a pun in the epitaph though?
add 2 vowells to the word before it and then a consonant
yes... there should be
ga7 = ga** bladder + T.S. ell***
Stiff at last
thanks bich
ahaha. that's better!
LOL
ty jes
damn.. still missing some r's
yw cos
since the funeral and/or memorial is really for the family, there are lots of different options, depending on the type of family you have, soodle.
Well, I've succeeded lowering general mood of Babblonia. And now I'm just going to tootle off to bed. What an insensitive babbler I am.
so there are two ga7? clue for the other would be welcomed? :)
and the family's beliefs, religion, traditions... we have so many different cultural lineages in the states, that there are tons of different funereal options available.
ga 7/36 is pl of the word before it
I'll be back later in the week in further depress ye all. :-)
you're fine, soodle. and i don't think that discussing it in the abstract is necessarily a depressing topic :)
ah thank ytou!
((((Thanks Jess))))
howdy again everyone. I love the idea of a rip roaring, booze fuelled Irish wake. What a better way to go than having a bunch of people who cared about you having a celebration of life because of you

hi all. I am learning how to play poker. my nephew is teaching me. so far I like Omaha the best. I won several times this evening.
nice.... is that a version of Texas Hold 'Em?
it is a different game
i have played a lot of traditional poker, but never heard of Omaha....a five card game?
yes I think
I played several different types so I am a bit confused.
I got a full house the last round
I wish we had been playing for money.

Anybody cross-stitch? I'm going to attempt a project, and have a question.
ha I thought you were going for "alien"
oops
alien
oops x 2....lol
Cross stitch? Not me. This is just the craftiest little place. Knitting, cross stitch...
no cross stitch here
I cross stitch a little bit
The instructions say to wash the yarn-floss and let it dry before beginning. Is that really necessary?
Depends on the floss and matrrial, but not usually done.
I think the concern is that the floss may not be color-fast.
But I haven't bought that yet. All I have is the kit with the pattern and the instructions.
I'd suggest a Google search on it, but I have been told that information on the internet is unreliable.
What kind of floss are you using? If it's yarn then that's needlepoint. Dmc floss doesn't need to be washed
I have done cross stitch and have never washed the floss first
what is 'dmc'? The instructions reference that, with specific color numbers.
dmc is the standardized number system for the colors
i alway use dmc floss
Damn my cross stitch?
logs
whoops sorry
That's funny, Molly!
Dmc is cotton floss nice to use and the colors dont run.
It said to get the six-strand floss, then separate into individual pieces. Then some will need two-ply, some three-ply, etc. This will be the first project of this kind for me. Thanks for the information!
Sounds like fun. You'll need to keep us updated on it
Well, gotta buy the floss next. Really wanted to study the instructions first.
Walmart carries dmc as well as craft stores
Is it important to buy it all at once, or can I buy it as I need it? (Do the dmc numbers insure the colors are the same in different batches?)
Can't say about the color batches. Are there a lot of colors in the pattern?
There are 9 different colors.
Each skein is 8.7 yards, so depending on how large the patyern is , i would probably buy one lot of whatever is the mosy dominant color
Most not mosy
Thanks for the info
Have fun!
I've done as much of this puzzle as I care to today. Thanks again for the advice! **out**
Good evening babblers. Back for the last 54.
In other words, you had five minutes to kill : D
I think it might take a bit more than that, Molly.
15 anyway.
Okay, seven : )
Gwenski, I do cross-stitch. I have found that most commercial floss brands are colourfast. the ones you have to be careful with are the hand dyed ones. i would recommend washing those before starting, otherwise take a small sample and wash that. If the dye colours the water then wash it before use with a gentle liquid detergent.
I think Gwenski bid a fond farewell.
Advice wasted then!
Advice not of use to you then Molly?
Oh, you never know. There could be some avid cross stitcher lurking.
But not you?
Good morning all. Clue for re 6/18 - the one after shredding again, please.
Uh, no, I'm not a cross stitch person. To relay a story again Liz.
Do you knit or crochet?
Thanks, Molly. All those l's!
In general, I am not a "stitchy" person. I'm not even very adept with a needle and thread.
Don't have it Lix.
That lets you out of cross-stitch as well
Never knew there were so many compound words ending in li4!

*Raises glass* Here's looking at you, kid.

I have 45 working days left til summer ;)
never mind!
fireworks
yay cos!
good evening all!
hmph - my 12 yo daughter gives me "eyeroll" all the time - and yet it's not a word?
e
evening phand :)
sorry, harry... but Enable also won't take linea, which is a word I use daily, so *shrug*
I knew a couple once whose names were Linea and Elena
linea is Latin for li4 - and while I guess Latin shouldn't get automatically included, it's also an anatomic structure and Enable takes plenty of medical Latin.
how are you Jess?
doing well, phand, and yourself?
not bad. Greatfull that the 2 inches of rain we have rec'd over last 2 days was not snow!
a welcome change for a lot of areas, i think :) it was briefly sunny and quite warm here this afternoon, but is raining again now
our sump pump kicked in today for the first time since we moved in
we did actually have some snow happen today, but it didn't last long.
That's odd. We had a couple of hours of snow.
I would say we did as well. Our ground got white, and there was some slush on the road when I went to the movies at 4pm
hi everyone
we had snow late last night and this morning - started as rain all yesterday - so some ice on the cars
snow was still on the ground this afternoon when the sun finally came out
finished the Ts!!!

hi all!

el, i think but let me look
ok, I got it and am happy. Long day today!
yay sue!
oh hi, jes, I was having a dog issue last night (she ate a bunch of brownies) but she is fine now.
ru asked me about it earlier today. glad she's feeling well.
I think she probably would have been ok anyway but we did give her milk and peroxide (which she lapped up like it was dessert) and got her to regurgitate quite a few of them.
She was a bit subdued for the rest of the night and most of today, but is perking up again.
yeah; from what ru described I'd have been more worried about high fat causing diarrhea nd/or pancreatitis than chocolate toxicity, but either way hydrogen peroxide gets it back.
*sigh* we will have to watch her carefully if we bake again. I didn't think she would eat things right off the counter top!
at least they weren't magic brownies :)
indeed :-)
anyway I am off for the night; see you later!
have a goodnight!
That is great news sue..
