that would only make it harder on him, I guess, dizgrannie. Sounds like his father left in divorce, and now the live-in b/f left, leaving Kods all over again. Not at all an easy thing to handle for a kid his age.
not sure how your relationship is with them, dizgrannie, or how close to you they are living... it might work to go do something with him. An outing, something active, and he might open up during the activities.
perhaps diz.....you could say something along the lines....b/f's departure must have hurt you. try and get him to open up.

something to bear in mind... when things are rough for kids and they have no control over what happens, psychologically they tend to blame themselves and they feel guilty. It is a mechanism that makes it more bearable for them... because being powerless is much worse than being guilty.

yep, an outing with granddad, doing manly stuff. Working side by side on something. Kids (and men in general) talk more easily when they are not facing you but are beside you doing something with their hands.
my sons adored their Pop. i will never forget the knot of grief at dad's funeral. the three of them, arms around each other.
