Penquis - may I recommend a Piksi hat to you for a small project. I have knitted several of these as everyone loves them. Knitted in double DK yarn so therefore very warm. Fast and Easy. Just google Piksi or go to Ravelry and search on that.

The rib is simply folded back - the advatage being that you could pull the rib part down way over the ears if really cold
ah....ok.....reason i was confused is that i once bought a hat that had the bottom folded over and stitched in with the top part....so the bottom band was doubled....
