well, it worked when farmers and ranchers were our backbone of economic trade, and they needed to use as much daylight as possible. obviously no longer true or needed.

Lack of daylight affects peoples moods. For some people, it's a serious problem and can lead to, or increase already present depression.
From what I've read it's not clear that DST has any clear effect on SAD - it is a shorter period of light in the winter no matter what you do.
Okay, I'll leave this conversation to the experts then.
I do know that Hawaii touts their non-usage of DST as one of the benefits of living there.
Arizona also doesn't change.
and they have more need for touting reasons to live there...

I still have a mild migraine which started yesterday afternoon, but it is snowing and I will XC-ski today and tomorrow!
We snowshoed yesterday because of the crunchy snow caused by Tuesday's freezing rain.
It is minus 5c and good for everything outdoors:)
We got a pass on the freezing rain and instead got a few more inches of fresh powder
Starting tomorrow we will be above freezing for many days. That put me into a panic when I looked at the forecast a few days ago.
Our ski resorts pre-purchases electricity in "blocks of KW usage" at a set fee. Now they will run the snow guns until the end of March break to make the base as deep as they possibly can and go into snow storage/management mode and just let people use it till it runs out (usually the end of April depending on weather)
There is, however, tons of natural stuff in the bush, and that is where crossy goes to play:)
The ski resort across the valley here usually closes around mid-March, but, with a base of at least 2 feet, they may stay open longer. The other resort 30 miles south typically stays open into early April if they can.
Yes, snowshoeing in the woods sure is fun.
I just went to our ski site and Blue has a 5 foot base today

My outer shell is a nice one from North Face. It was given to me after I volunteered at the 1997 special Olympic winter games here on Blue Mountain. It is a lovely commemorative shell, and as well put together today as when it was new. I did not have any glorious position, but instead kept people in bounds and moved hay bales and ropes around:)

When immigrants to Canada officially become citizens, they are given a free one-year pass to thousands of museums and cultural centers across Canada. The ticket helps Canada's newest citizens to discover the vast cultural history, artworks and parks of the country.

I was lucky. I came is under the old Landed immigrant set-up which gives me a status as a permanent resident. This way i have the best of both worlds and I keep my U.K Passport.
our local science centre charges $15/adult and $11/child admission - that cultural pass would help out a lot, but what about the taxpayers who paid for the centre? no break for them - and if a couple has two kids, that's more than $50 to walk through the door - much more than an average family can afford (same for museums and the zoo here - cost prohibitive to working class families)

Well, as a tax payer. it does not bother me in the slightest to do my bit to help new citizens enjoy all this country has to offer.
Many who come here have never been able to enjoy museums and cultural centres, while I have had them at my fingetips for decades.
not saying otherwise, just that it'd be nice if citizens were offered some incentives to participate in the cultural scene, too

There are many free ones though, if you dig a bit. We have county museums and archives hidden off the beaten path as well as open donation township museums run out of old schoolhouses.
Not to mention our own town museum filled with local relics of our past
sure, i get that - but the 'pay for admission' venues are what people would like to see - a major art exhibit, the dinosaur fossils, etc.

i was really caught off guard the first time i went to the glenbow museum and there was an admission fee. i was used to the museums in nyc that are admission by donation - everyone gets to visit (and yes, it's by honor system - and i'm sure that for the most part, people are honorable and donate what they can afford)
at the time, i was new to canada and had very little money - and a passel of kids in tow
oh well, it is what it is. time for laundry duty - later, crossy
We were poor growing up as well , so we went to places like The Robert McLaughlin Gallery and the Ontario Science centre

Lots of free things to visit in DC, including The National Zoo and many of the art galleries and museums. Which makes it nice for the people who have spent money traveling there to visit.

we have a nice art museum in my town....supported by the Wyeths, whose summer houses are in this area....what's nice is that residents of my town can go for free anytime....not bad for a town of 7600...

Good Morning Everyone. I'd like to chime in on the museum fees for visits. I've found that if you check around on the museums' online sites, you may find that there may be a day once a month or once a week that has a free entry day.
Well I guess it's good to get excited over 4 letter words
Or reduced fees; for the public. And if you join 1 museum, you can get discounted tickets to numerous museums across the country.

I've heard that about US museums Nef. Not sure about the Canadian ones that were being discussed. Having grown up around DC, I can't imagine paying to get into a museum. I am fortunate in that respect.
It's been so long since I've been to Canada that my kids have grown up since back then! But I remember we went to a couple of museums near Kenora and Thunder Bay (Manitoba) and it didn't seem very expensive back then (& we always watched our pennies back then)

Chicago's Museum of Science& Industry charges $18. adults & $11. for children but also $36 for special displays. So for a family of 4 quite expensive. Few years ago I went to the Aquarium and for (4) it cost me around $75.00

I just checked, and there are some Canadian museums with museum passports that are good for limited time lenghts; plus also if you join some museums you can get discounts to other ones. It sounds similar to ours.

I think admission vs. no admission has to do with Federally funded museums vs. privately funded.
... I'd check out the Royal Ontario Museum website ... it's the largest around ... it might be expensive but I'll bet a membership there would get you into just about everything

I belong to the Science Museum of MN and they have a special exhibit there right now on Space. I took DH and our grandson there last weekend, and we also saw the movie in the Omni theater (also on Space). With our senior discounts and membership we paid about half of what a non-member would pay.

my membership allows free admission to general exhibits at 300 different museums around the world (it states). I've used it in the past when traveling and it's definitely worth the price
The most amazing museum I have been to is the Air And Space Museum at Dulles. The Space Shuttle, the Mars Rover, the Concorde, Enola Gay and many other impressive things are stored there.

You could spend a week or two visiting Art Museums and History Museums in DC. It's pretty cool to go to The National Archives and see the original copy of The Constitution.

One of our favorite museums in DC was the Goddard Space Flight Center, but it could have been because it wasn't jammed packed with people (like the Smithsonian was that week).
i will have to go to the Natural History Museum one more time before I leave NYC
and would liike to go to MOMA too, it's just always so bloody crowded on free days
I always jump at the chance to go to DC. We were there for a wedding last Sept., but we only got the the American History Museum. The one in Dulles is number one on the list

We've had some very interesting museum vivts in odd places in our travels in the US. theres' a museum in Rock Springs, WY. that has a Foucaut pendulum, but they also have a huge display of dinosaurs, etc. And we crawled under an inflatable planetarium in Peirre, SD. Years ago. (The planetary guide was a 10 or 12 year old kid: it was really quite good if a bit strange. I suppose it's gone now…)

Everyone has their own likes and dislikes. Personally, I don't like New York. I find it kind of gross and way too crowded. I'm sure there are plenty of people who love it, as evidenced by how many people live there.

winter has been so messed up... it's like the weather from here just skipped over and piled on top of the weather out east. we've have nothing for snow.
We've had just a bit under our average snowfall this winter. The weatherman just this AM said that 2012 is the last time we had less than this,
and both of these winters were abnormal
I think we ended up with a total of 4", that only stayed a week or 2. big swing from a few years ago when we got 5 feet in 24 hours.

That is what I usually have. I use a spare fold-up kitchen table and just leave it out for the duration. Nothing finer after a hard day that getting home, puring a beverage of an adult nature, putting on some good music, and working on a puzzle for a bit.

I've not got much - just two pots of daffs. But I've just planted some more pots for the summer and I've got some seedlings growing for my hanging baskets so hopefully my little pad will look a little more cheery as the year progresses

that's true. The parks up here have that problem. The council spend a lot of money making them look nice only for the little gits to pull the plants out and throw them around the park. If it's not that then they go round smashing empty bottles everywhere. Still, musn't grumble - like you say, spring's on it's way! Along with my birthday (grooooaaaan!!!!)
I Love nature, and green and growing things, but sadly I have a "black thumb" I can kill the hardiest plant in mere days:(

Funnily it's one thing I'm good at is keeping plants alive. I worked in a warehouse once and they had a dead ficus plant - about 6ft tall. I took it home and within 2 weeks it was pickled in leaves!

I once bought my beloved this gorgeous baby fig tree for our 7th anniversary. I should have known better. it was done in a month:(
The one thing I do suffer from though is mildew
i mean not me, of course, the compost in the pots gets covered in mildew
grass I CAN grow! My lawns used to be a verdant , lush green. I used to always use the Kentucky blue grass seeds:)
