ah, moonlight sonata is playing. i performed that many times, as i type, i feel myself playing it in my mind. such a calming piece to play.

i don't have that reaction to orchestral music -- well most of it -- despite playing violin since 9, including 15 years in orchestras.

viola actually. I still play violin. But i spent 4 years on viola and loved it.
eventually, i'll live with a piano again and play again.
i'm way out of practice on piano.
but i have my violin.

i wanted to learn piano because i was entranced by the motion of the keys sitting behind the music teacher in lemenary school.
i was sad to discover that playing one could not see the motion of the keys.
Lindz used to go to sleep to classical music.. just not Rachmaninov (sp?); loved Beethoven, Mozart...
but came to grok that in playing piano, one BECOMES the motion of the keys was almost as good.
I love watching the motion of the keys on a piano, but never thot about the pianist's view
Shostakovich is also not good for sleeping.

my parents were shocked and confused when i asked to learn piano.

I was busy looking for the f7 and came back to chat...and found another viola player!!! I started on violin in 4th grade, and in 7th, discovered a viola in the instrument closet at school and took it to my next violin lesson

i switche to viola in 9th grade when i made only 3rd chair 1st violin. I found i liked the instrument and the people in the viola section better.
Turned out my teacher was primarily a violist. I played for years, then many years off, and picked it up again and played in a couple of local symphonies until I had foot surgery that required me to keep my foot elevated for 8 months...I need to pick it up again, it's only been a year.

I unfortunately had to do it cold turkey and alone with no rehab, counseling or anything, but at least it got done, though I would not recommend doing it that way. I just had no choice.

Scrab, you hit it on the head there...I think the real underlying cause of these things is a serious lack of self-esteem which is why there is so much recurrence. It's hard to develop that especially during or after this type of crisis.

Mine started due to back pain issues but was then amplified by emotional ones. I'm lucky that deep down I did have love for myself that got me through, thanks to my wonderful parents.

One of my son's friends lives with me (a grown up man in his 30's). I had a stump to get rid of in the back yard and he thought it would be a good idea to set it on fire. I was asleep. The fire department showed up with sirens blaring at 2 am. geesh
