9:04 pm

:D

9:05 pm

m9f9l - I just saw on your profile that you tutor math. That is something I would like to do when I "retire."

9:06 pm

Why wait?

9:06 pm

Well, I'm working about 60 hrs a week and have dogs, a house to keep up, etc.

9:07 pm

Yikes! What do you do?

9:08 pm

Don't get me started :D I am a business/program manager for a part of Univ of Ca.

9:09 pm

Ah. (backing slowly away)

9:09 pm

One of my retirement plans is to finish my master's degree in math. May seem pointless to some to do so at my "advanced age," but I really want to.

9:09 pm

Cool! And you probably get a discount on tuition?

9:10 pm

Why is this grid being so difficult?!?!?!?

9:11 pm

I can actually go to the other university system in the state for FREE tuition (free tuition at the CSU system in CA for those over 60) - class space not guaranteed, but still!

9:11 pm

Cool! Can you do much of it online?

9:12 pm

I haven't checked that out. I will.

9:14 pm

finally got the 8! I'm so proud of myself because I didn't search out the stats for it :-)

9:15 pm

I've been considering go back to school

9:15 pm

It's amazing how much you can do online now

9:16 pm

It is. I recently took a couple of classes online at Stanford. No credits issued though ... just for fun.

9:17 pm

Cool! What did you take?

9:20 pm

a couple of creative writing classes. I have never been good at that.

9:20 pm

Ah. Did you enjoy the classes though?

9:21 pm

Did they have you do freewriting?

9:22 pm

I did, but the classes reinforced my belief that I suck at creative writing. Just not my ball of wax.

9:22 pm

Yeah, not for everyone.

9:22 pm

i am down to 10 left. Really don't want to list, but this is like pulling teeth now.

9:23 pm

9

9:24 pm

8. I'm monkeying so much I don't even know what I just got!

9:25 pm

HA ha ha.. it was probably the he4. I just read the definition. Hilarious.

9:36 pm

origami, my part time job is tutoring! There are SO many kids who need one-to-one explanations in order to understand Math. You are off to the races.

9:37 pm

What ages Bugs?

9:38 pm

my specialty turned out to be middle school Grade 7 - 9. Most people hate them but I loved it most of the time. Just hated the depressing school system.

9:38 pm

fw. I had to list for 3

9:38 pm

Hey bugs, we're on the same page :D Thanks for your advice BTW

9:39 pm

I am glad I was able to offer the other side.

9:39 pm

Ugh! middle school :D

9:40 pm

My thing is older women returning to school after a long time away. People who are anxious about math. Have never felt they "got" it.

9:40 pm

Ah, m9f9l, so you tutor adults. Nice.

9:41 pm

Yeah right origami!?! Talk about depressing!LOL I bet Bugs you make a HUGE difference for those kids!

9:42 pm

I was definately one who didn't get Math. It is what makes me a good tutor because I know what steps they are missing and I can create alternative methods that work for them. I love catching them at an age when they have the maturity to alter their view of themselves as "stupid" before high school

9:43 pm

I am so glad to hear we are all three on the same page abaout helping others make their dreams come true.

9:45 pm

I would like to help younger people before they get lost, but usually they don't seek tutoring until middle school or so, and that's just SO hard, because most kids in school system have bought into the idea that learning something new is something that has to be driven by the teacher, not the student. It's very hard to approach problem solving that way. And I'm not interested in just getting someone to know how to do the algorithm. It's only valuable if they understand the concept.

9:45 pm

Indeed. I wonder about the messages or experiences kids get about math being hard and how that sticks with them.

9:47 pm

Come to think of it, I'm thinking more of high schoolers than middle schoolers.LOL

9:47 pm

It is like any other problem. Just break it down in little bits and they discover that each little bit is not difficult. Rather like a pre-schooler learning to put on their own coat.

9:47 pm

I was lucky to always be labeled as "good at math and science." I am really interested in STEM education for girls, in particular.

9:49 pm

A motivated high schooler would be fun to work with. I am imagining someone who didn't like Math so they didn't work at it but now realize they want a profession that requires it so they have to go back and fill in gaps.

9:49 pm

And that's what I mostly deal with. Older people who are motivated. And scared.

9:50 pm

we are all scared when we try schooling again. It opens us up to be judged. I think adult learners are powerful.

9:50 pm

Maybe that is the tutor realm I should focus on. It would really make me feel good to help someone in that situation.

9:50 pm

I work with a motivated high schooler. Well, I guess I should say I DID work with one... a couple months ago. She doesn't need me any more :-)

9:51 pm

If she doesn't need you, that is a success :D

9:51 pm

(((hugs all))) hello...

9:51 pm

Isn't it great when you work yourself out of a job? There are always more students but to know that they are off and running on their own is very gratifying.

9:52 pm

hey stid, I was just thinking you should be here for this conversation.

9:52 pm

Exactly bugs. I have that experience t work when I train up someone and they go on to bigger and better things.

9:52 pm

Yup! That was um. .. what WERE we doing?LOL Oh yeah, we started with some Algebra and then Geometry.

9:52 pm

Hi Stid.

9:52 pm

Hi Stid!

9:53 pm

just read back. :-) Up to date now.

9:53 pm

I homeschooled all of my children, so it was never really an issue.

9:53 pm

Hey m9 -- have been loving the baby pics!

9:55 pm

Thanks stid! Aren't they just the cutest little stinkers?!?

9:55 pm

indeed -- particularly... was it green marker? ;-)

9:55 pm

I am currently working with a very bright girl whose older sister got straight A's without trying. This kid has ADD so she just decided she was dumb and stopped trying. Now that we are going back to fill in the gaps and I can reassure her that she is smart she is so encouraged that she wants me to tutor her all summer! I certainly was not expecting that.

9:56 pm

I have banned "smart" in my classroom. (Also nice). It is not specific enough. I told the kiddos that if I cannot come up with a better word, I am being lazy... LOL their eyes bugged out!

9:57 pm

WTG bugs.

9:58 pm

I think all kids are smart. They need to think that too.

9:58 pm

I visited with my best friend from 5th and 6th grade yesterday because she's moving away, and she showed me a video of her daughter. Makes me excited that there are teachers out there like her daughter. I just found the video on youtube! http://tinyurl.com/gno7lnr

9:59 pm

It was BLACK marker! Of course.

9:59 pm

I agree -- I try to say capable, hard-working, determined, ready to learn... I will use intelligent in limited situations, but too many people think smart and intelligent mean "straight As" and that is never what I intend!

10:00 pm

Ha HA.. Specific. That's what the S in S.M.A.R.T. stands for!

10:00 pm

Good job Bugs! You have totally changed that girl's life!

10:01 pm

Awesome m9f9l

10:02 pm

I wish I had more energy to pull together lessons like that one, m9! I really enjoy the times that the kids get to learn a little more about real life.

10:02 pm

Good evening, everyb ody. ;)

10:02 pm

hey cross

10:03 pm

I am always reminding my tutees that of course they can understand math because they understand the world around them. The math they are having problems with is just a symbolic language that is describing the world they already understand. They just don't know the notation yet. Because believe it or not, where most adults have issues with mathematics is pretty basic stuff. Fractions, addition and subtraction... for real!

10:03 pm

On tablet so please excuse excessive typos

10:03 pm

Hi crossy!

10:04 pm

OK, dorky math folks. Does it make me a complete nerd that I drag out diffy Q and advanced calculus books and work the problems for fun?

10:05 pm

LOL, yes.

10:05 pm

English is my thing. I save math for the other T.A at our learning centre.

10:05 pm

I'm working through the "world of math" at khan academy for fun.

10:05 pm

not really, origami... LOL math is fun! I never went that far with math -- ran out of money and by the time I went back to college had decided to go into humanities instead. :-)

10:06 pm

Nerds unite!

10:07 pm

I tutor english also if someone needs it. And recently I tutored Office 13. I don't know office 13 (or I didn't), but I still was able to get her through with an A :-)

10:08 pm

I teach the to grind out acceptable reference pages in APA using Office ;)

10:08 pm

Pretty much if someone has their textbook I can help them with their schoolwork, LOL.

10:09 pm

Hello to my fellow babblers! How is everyone doing today

10:09 pm

By the way congratulations to all the finishers! Way to go

10:09 pm

Hello Min -- tired!

10:09 pm

OK. This conversation has really helped me. I think I really want to tutor math when I retire.

10:09 pm

The Community College here has them all do MLA

10:09 pm

Do it origami!

10:10 pm

hello friends.

10:10 pm

All APA in these parts. Most colleges retired MLA

10:10 pm

Hey Trif

10:10 pm

hey trifioso!

10:11 pm

Me too stidmama. So glad I have spring break next week.

10:11 pm

Figures. This town is small, and backwards.LOL

10:11 pm

Figures. This town is small, and backwards.LOL

10:11 pm

origami, there is a woman in the town that I live in that can tutor the highest levels they teach at high school, even the AP stuff, and she worked the SAT practice books until she knew them cold. She currently has 25 students, and a wait list. She charges $125 an hour, so you do THAT math!

10:11 pm

middle- and high schools in the U.S. seem to use MLA; colleges are hit-or-miss.... hard to adapt between styles

10:11 pm

our spring break is in April this year. I'll make it, but wouldn't have minded a break a little sooner!

10:11 pm

It is tough to alter styles

10:12 pm

origami - cash only, tax free....

10:12 pm

spend a lot of time wading through Owl purdue

10:13 pm

Trust me, I read the forum posts that all of these classes require....and most of the students in these classes it doesn't matter what research format they ask for, because they can hardly put one coherent sentence together anyway.

10:13 pm

I am finished! I have fireworks!pe 6/24 word was my last.

10:13 pm

wtg min!

10:13 pm

Yaa for min!!

10:13 pm

In third grade, of course, "style" consists of capitals and punctuation... perhaps remembering transition words or indenting at the start of paragraphs. On my lucky days, they remember the spelling words we have studied!

10:13 pm

YAY minveryork!

10:14 pm

I usually have spring break in April, but we always have it the week the before Easter, hence it is in March this year

10:14 pm

m9, that is truer than you think. a colleague of mine has a husband that was just hired at a college. due to the high schools focusing so hard on math and sciences the past few years, colleges now have an influx of freshman that can BARELY read and write

10:14 pm

huzzah for min!

10:14 pm

And with all that focusing they can still hardly do any math either probably!

10:14 pm

I'll be here for a few more minutes if anyone needs clues.

10:14 pm

I see that all the time,trif :(

10:15 pm

I was watching a little girl about 10 years ago after school and so I was helping her with her homework. And her "reading" homework was enough to turn ANYone off of reading!

10:16 pm

Push too hard too soon and the kids don't remember anything they have been taught.....

10:16 pm

Bottom line is that almost NO person ever remembered anything they were taught unless they were actually interested in the lesson.

10:16 pm

sorry I wandered off everyone. I watched the Iditerod Math and got distracted. . .

10:17 pm

Wasn't that cool bugs?

10:17 pm

I had one young lady, 19 or so, and she was missing her english credits for her diploma. Well, the bok that I helped her with was the first one she had ever read. I was shocked !!

10:18 pm

Book*

10:18 pm

Hey Trif, thanks. Maybe I won't be so poor in my retirement years :-)

10:19 pm

I am so happy that more schooling is done this way, with kids collaborating to solve problems that relate to real life. If I have to hear another person say "I will never use algebra in real life...."

10:20 pm

I have to go take my canine beasties out. Thanks for the chat folks.

10:22 pm

well, I am supremely disinterested in the grid for some reason. Maybe just bad mood... have a lovely weekend, all. Enjoy the beginning of spring! :-D

10:23 pm

dithering away too. Happy Babbling

10:24 pm

Tc all who are heading off. Have a great night.

10:25 pm

Heading off myself. I also lost interest in this one. Goodnight , my friends.
