Hi sandy. (I'm slow in answering because I just got a load of clothes out of the dryer. last load for today; 2 more loads for tomorrow though.
We are having solar panels put on today, very exciting , now no more power bills
I'd really love to do that; but we'd have to replace our shingles too (they are over 15 years old) and doing that plus the solar panels would be ridiculous if we only plan to live here for less than 5 more years)
And, up here in Minnesota, even though our roof would be suitable (the south-facing roof has direst sun exposure for 6 1/2 hours/day) but we'd still have power bills
power costs here , I think are high , our bills for eight weeks are between 600 and 800 - they range
OUCH! (not sure how your money compares to ours, though)
Our dollar is worth less than your dollar i think
its really worth it for us with solar and we have lots of sunshine of course
And we have long cold winters here too! :-)
Then again, do you have insulation your walls & roof?
I live in a perfect climate for solar panels. Would probably generate more electricity than I could use during the spring, summer and fall. But the initial outlay would be too expensive for me.

Sacramento is in California's Central Valley. I live about 75 miles northeast of San Francisco. but we have a very different climate. much hotter and dryer.

origami, there are indeed programs for here in the US. We were quoted between $20 & 30 thousand for the solar panels & installation; but then the whole older shingles bit would put us well over $40,000
drier rather than dryer :-)
Our summers can be very hot but it is milder here in Margaret River than in Perth -that is one of the reasons we moved here -I hate the heat

When my daughter builds her house in the other paddock over the hill they are not going on the grid they are just putting solar batteries in from the start
I've often though that maybe it would be fun to do ourselves; since I've seen smaller solar panels at Menards (which is sort of a hardware/lumber/handymans store)that a person could hook up for their RV's & such; but it would take more work than I could do myself these days.
