yes mari?? ad what?
a mistake hit wrong button
typing with one hand
why one hand?
i fell on my right hand. it is swollen. not broken.
mari, if the pain doesn't improve within a week, please go back to your health care person
I will. they said it was a bad sprain
mari, i was told i had a sprain and 13 months later an ortho diagnosed a fractured ankle. i walked and worked on that ankle, in pain and in tears.
sometimes the fractured bone is obscured.
a bone scan would show it up.
ad
I broke two vertebrae in my neck in a car crash and my GP refused to send me for an x-ray as he said it was only a pulled muscle. I had to soldier on, holding my chin up with my hand for months. This was 30 years ago, when you couldn't just walk into A&E yourself.
Make sure you insist on further investigations, marigold.
geez Hydra !
this must have been in the days when that ddoctor wouldn't have been sued
marigold is not on I will talk with her. she is my sister
You're right, bichon. He actually twisted my head round and said nothing was broken. I could have ended up paralysed! I only had my neck xrayed this year and it showed up the breaks.
wow hydra
Hi peri. I'm sure you'll do your best for her. My sister is still suffering with the ankle she broke last year.
often when there is an accident the areas is so bruised that it is not possible to see any fractures.

I don't think the British have as much litigation as Americans
Is it? It looks small to me. I shall have to fix it.
No, bichon, they don't. I have spent upwards of £30,000 over the years, on chiro, physio, massage, trying to get my neck moving properly. I now have severe arthritis in it. But arnica cream helps with the pain, thank goodness!
In the US there would be tons of lawyer aggressively trying to get you case. But money can't buy you pain relief.
Unfortunately, it can't. But I was very lucky in that I didn't end up in a wheelchair so I must count my blessings.
Been trying to change my icon but every time I try to upload a new pic, the site crashes!

morning all
hi mool
how goes aloy?
hi mool
hey bich
pretty good for a Wednesday, mool. slow to wake up but getting there
finally "seeing" some words
yeah, I hear that...my 5 year old decided to wake up at 6:30 this morning, so have been entertaining her
does she go to preschool?
I woke up at 6:20. That woke up the dog. No going back to sleep
no
we're homeschooling
ah so
yup
Who does the schooling? You or your wife?
well we're doing this thing called unschooling
which is not curriculum driven
The idea is that she's learning all the time
Does she get lonely?
no, we have kids come over, and she does have activities
she actually is having some kids coming over later today for instance
Monday's they have this open gym thing for kids, and what they call discovery days down at the library
yesterday was a home day...tomorrow more activities...etc
sounds terrific
yeah, when you think about it, the way we learn isn't really subject driven
we learn because we're interested in something, or because it allows us to get something
whereas in school it's less about learning and more about teaching
I remmber my g'daughter's kindergarten in parocial school. They started learning 60 sight words. Yuck
am a fan of phonetics
depends on a lot of factors. i tend to think gifted kids do better with something like that, unless their school happens to be really prepared to work with them.
and it presupposes that you're a very good parent. if you let your kid manipulate you and stuff, they probably won't learn much!
you are correct hurshy, this is not something just anyone can execute
You need a lot of resource...time, opportunity...money helps
met a third grader this fall who said her mom told her that math isn't very important...
my wife doesn't work, if she did, this wouldn't be an option
well there are aspects of math that aren't very important
but it depends what you're doing
third grade math is pretty important
and this girl, when asked what 9 + 9 is, said, "ten?" now i could see getting it a little off, but how do you reach that age and not be able to easily see that it can't possibly be TEN?
I remember [way back when I was in HS in the 60's] a mother at Open House saying "What does she need Math for, she's only going to wash floors. That sounds bizarre today. What happens when hubby leaves her for a young womanand she needs to goto work to support herself?
hi all. any clues for the 8s? ty
gotta love those parents with high aspirations for their kids...
I have been speaking to 13 year old grandaughter about maths - which she hates - and how she needs it in life, so evefry time we do anything which needs maths, I tell her which maths we're usingg.
just read the chat. amazing stuff.
math is crucial.
can i co7 in you, tell you my troubles?
We've recently measured the area of the kitchen ceiling to see how much paint I needed to buy, weighed ingredients for a meal, worked out what my annual electricty bill is likely to bne...
2 8s come from that
My 'daughger, now in 4th grade in a public school, is starting the basics of algebra
ty for co words. got them. two 8s.
Bich, why did you ask after Annie? Is something wrong?
*granddaughter
I havenot seen her here or on QP for a week
measured fabric to see if I have enough to make a garment. I am inventing little tasks to help her see that she needs to understand numbers in everyday life, even if she doesn't need to know the more complex stuff. I am hoping that if she can get confident with basics, and stop hating maths, then the rest may come alonmg too
if kids dont get the basic concepts of math, something is wrong with their ability to reason. it should be intuitive that 9 + 9 is 18. i think in pre school they count things to show how to count and add.
I don't know what QP is. Maybe she is visiting her daughter.
It's a set of word games. Annie, Scrabs, Haz and Welki do it
Which Annie? One has been on at the same time as me a few times recently - Anniebrock?
I once knew a woman who, when her husband left her, didn't even know how to write a check. I find that sad.
yes Anniebrook. I think ruby has her email
yes Anniebrook. I think ruby has her email
she's definitely been on in the last 3 days
but not for long
Glant...those are the types of things we're doing, you could call it "applied" mathematics, in that it's not really math, but more part of trying to solve a problem
hope everything's okay with Bobby
versus teaching abstracts
yes, that's what I am trying to get across to my grandaughter

one thing which is kind of old fashioned but which has stood me in good stead throughout my life is that I learned my times tables 'parrot fashion' when I was aged 6-8. Now the answers are all just in my head without needing to work them out, when I need to multiply anything... and children here in the UK don't learn times tables that way any more - and they have to work out the calculations in theior heads each time...

sorry to hear that red shoes. she was younger than I.
Yeah. She was only 66. Just turned last November. Emphysema. She smoked for a very very very long time.
sorry for your loss, redshoes
my grandfather gave up his pipe at 90, when the doctor said he would probably breather better if he quit.
Thank you.

whoops. Not a word, any hooo.
I am always sorry to see young people smoke. It can just be so awful later in life.
hi shoes
Definitely. Even after my mom was diagnosed in 1997, she and my sister still smoked. My mom quit with a couple of relapses and we found out my sister also had emphysema when she passed away four years ago. And still, despite all of this and despite seeing the effects smoking had on his grandma his whole life, started smoking as a teen. So dumb.
redshoes, I am so sorry to read about the loss of your Mom.

Hi again. Good for you, Gwen. I still have 198 to go (I was here earlier, but almost as soon as I got in to chat; I had to leave. So now I'm back to try to finish.
hi Nef and everyone, I have 46 left
they are extending the concept of folding paper to other 3-D media. They are trying to develop an engineering algorithm. Very cool stuff for the geeks among us :-)
Hi Nef
Hi ori & sandyloo! I just got home from taking my grandson to tae kwon do (I pick him up after school, get him fed, then take him to tae kwon do every Wednesday evening)
Sounds fun, I am baby sitting at the moment, the baby is so good she lies on the floor and goos at me
My daughter has gone to the doctor , I think she has a breast abscess (she is still feeding the baby)
Ooh! that's the fun time; you get to be the center of her universe & she's the center of yours! :-)
I take the older one to swimming lessons on Tuesdays. That really keeps me fit (or exhausted)
how old is that one, sandyloo?
Two and a half and the baby is four months
I've found grandchildren are more fun that my own kids were.
I get to see my fairy goddaughter on Saturday. She is the closest I am ever going to get to a grandchild. She just turned a year old! Love that little munchkin.
They can be delightful , there is no doubt and I really love it when Annabelle is naughty as my daughter is a school teacher and used to boast of her excellent "child control skills"
'used to' being the operative words
ori, I "adopted" my neighbor when she went through post partum depression years ago. Her husband had emigrated here from Iran 20+ years ago; he'd gone back to see family when his brother was ill & met & fell in love with her there. They had a 3 year courtship (mainly because the US wouldn't let her enter the country) finally got married & she had lived here for about a year when she had a baby & the post part depression. She IS like a daughter to me & her 2 kids call me "Gramma." (Their real grandparents are all dead).
sandyloo, that's so funny!
that is a lovely story - is she recovered
Oh yes. We still are very close even though they moved about 20 miles away (they needed a bigger house closer to his work).
Even my 7 year old calls their kids "cousins" & we get together frequently for family visits.
it is true saying 'it takes a village to raise a child'
(My point to ori was that even though they aren't "blood" relatives, we're relatives by love).
Families are made up of so many people and not all of them related by blood
yes, that's so true.
eder
I have to finish this puzzle 30 left
oops. (Not a word)
GO, sandyloo! You can do it!
I can't get that so6- any clues please?
I don't have it but will help you look
so 6/27 so + another name for a kennel
looking and thinking
or SO + where people keep birds; in an bird ****
Yes, people come into our lives who are not genetically family. But we love them every bit as much. If we're lucky.
very true origami, I have quite a few friends like that - I am very lucky
got those words thanks nef
Indeed, ori. (I consider myself very lucky!) :-)
I have two very good friends both of them I met in Grade one at school when I was 5
And my best friend from the age of 13 lives just 2 miles from me; she's a retired nurse midwife; & I'm a retired RN.
Our kids are spaced a year apart for her 3 & my 2; we shared maternity clothes (even though she was 6 or 7 inches taller than me! -I wore several of her tops as dresses back then!)
Friends are so important. I have large circle of friends, but am only really, really close to 3 people. And I cherish them. I have known my best friend for 30 years and don't know what I would do without her!
I also have a very close circle of nurses who are internet friends; we've been together on a small private bulletin board for 15 years now & there's nothing we wouldn't do for each other. Some us have met & some others we may never meet; but we share a very close common bond.
I was a little concerned when we moved to the farm that I would miss my friends , but amazingly I have met some really special people down here and have become fast friends . People here have helped us and been there for us when we needed help - they have been amazing
my friends visit frequently so all is good with the world
:-D
*jealous of the people with all the friends*
There are people I know online that I consider friends too, Nef. Lots of Babble folks included. Including Nef.
babblers are never without friends
Aww, hurshy, as long as we've known each other through Babble; I think of you (& so many others here) as friends too!)
Ah hurshy, I don't have that many friends. A few good ones.
my sisters are my best friends. started to lose touch with my college best friend when she started having kids, was always afraid to call and wake up the baby...
and yes, ori, I consider you a friend too
well thank you Nef :)
I am sort of an introvert. A social introvert, but an introvert nonetheless.
hursh, my cousin & I were very close (her mom raised my siblings & me when my mom died); & we lived together when we moved to the Twin Cities. When I got married I didn't understand why I didn't hear from her much; then when I had my 1st kid about the only time I heard from her was when I went Up North to my home town (she was a veterinarian & had her own business; so I never wanted to "interrupt" her when she was working). Later we talked about that & realized that our "not wanting to interrupt" the other was what kept us apart.
yeah - unfortunately in my case, after the part where it was just that, then other things came in which made it even harder...
Well, time for me to give up this grid and listen to a Van Morrison album and crochet for a while. See ya'll.
(BTW, *I* am the "Quiet" one in my family! I'm not kidding; I know I seem like a real talkative person here, but if you guys thing *I* talk a lot; you should meet my family! :-D
an album!
Bye ori! Take care of yourself!
I come from a large extended family, my mother from a family of 8 and her mother from a family of 21 (father married twice 10 then 11 children) and we are not catholic but staunch anglicans LOL- I have 36 first cousins and keep in contact with them all
8 left
LOL, sandyloo! My mom had 8 siblings & they all had 5 & 6 kids (except the 1 that raised me); so I think that we had 56 first cousins just on my mom's side
Go, GO sandyloo!
Nef, you don't seem like a quiet one that is for sure.
LOL! That's why I say you should see my family if you think I'm talkative!
(A big Irish Catholic family; I had 5 Aunts & they would all talk at once & after being together they'd all be talking the whole time & would all know what everyone else said once they left!)
Our family is the same Nef, I am not quiet but struggle to get a word in'
I do love having a large family like that. As children we always had somewhere to go for a holiday with our cousins and very lucky for us a lot of them had sheep stations where I loved to go
(The Uncles that married into the family used to have a saying that I'd never heard until my husband was told it when we got married: "You can telegraph or telephone, but to get the news out, tell a Whelan!"
LOL Our family is the same, if anything happens to anyone we all know within a couple of hours
YES! There weren't any farms in our families, but we often were lucky enough to have a cousin stay with us or stay at a cousin's home for a week or so. And at Christmas; I remember sleeping 4 -5 girls sideways across a bed when we were small! :-D
the baby on my icon picture is not really that large , I will try to change it
LOL! When DH & I decided to get married, I called my aunts & uncle, then my sister, then WE got a call from another sister congratulating us before we could place the 3rd phone call ourselves!! That
One of my cousins just died; she was just a year older than me (lung cancer) & the funeral is this Saturday. Now a days the sad news travels just as fast. :-(
Just had to go down to the back paddock. My uncle died last week. It was very sad. There are three left now - one aunty 99, another aunt 87 who has just been put into a home and my amazing mother (89) who has the most spotless house and still gives dinner parties .
How lucky you are, sandyloo! I have 2 aunts left; the youngest 2; and the 86 yr old is getting very forgetful this year. :-(
I loved my aunts and uncles and always remember the great times as a child when I would go and stay with them. I have one brother and one sister who I am very close to . We all want to be like mum tho,
how many words do you have left Nef? I have 5
also how did you get started playing babble? I used to play Tangleword and still talk to some friends I used to play with all those years ago
I have 135 left, sandyloo. Do you need help?
lol do you need help?
I just got a tr6 which reminded me of your job as an RN
and the tr7 & 7 come from that word
fws
YAY, sandyloo!! WTG!!!
I had all those tr words already. But you don't have to help me; I haven't listed yet (But will be doing soon since I just saw the time)
I came over from a role-playing game that ended;I think I'm the only one still playing from that group though.
I list as soon as it comes up otherwise I would never finish - not that that is important
I try not to list until I'm at least half way; I like to challenge myself.
in fact that reminded me of a game "Serpentine" which I played after Tangleword and I just logged into it again. LOL I was sooo bad! Lucky Im not proud
LOL! :-D
Even now I can see a lot of old Tanglers still there. It's amazing how long we go on playing these games.
Were these word games?
years and years of babbling and i still cannot stop myself from entering 'fest' even though i know as i am doing it that it will not go
This was a role playing game called Pyroto and we made up characters & would sort of be "scored" by our language skills (I think; I can't remember anymore)
Tangleword and Serpentine are both word games like this but with a time limit .the game i just played was 2 mins . the winner got 162 points I got 40. LOL
i don't do that well under time pressure either sandy
Same with me hurshy! And it doesn't help that local churches use "Fest" as part of their fund raisers every fall ("Fall Fest", "October Fest", etc)
tangleword is no longer but serpentine is still going. A lot of babblers used to play Tangleword
and other word games DO take fest, also
Hurshy, it is all a matter of practice but I was never very good at it, but enjoyed it immensley
well we just watched 2 of 3 episodes of a BBC/Netflix show that has come out called "Our World War", put together from documents and survivors' stories. i know people generally think more about WWII bc of the holocaust and everything but something about WWI just really gets to me, and no matter how much i read and watch about it, it never ceases to boggle my mind and turn my stomach.
Hurshy , I find those war documentaries extremely interesting and watch them all the time, my husband loves them too
this one is interesting because it's like sort of a combo or compromise between a documentary and a drama
hurshy, I think my DH was watching that too yesterday. I caught part of it where a young man was accused of desertion, & he was shot by a firing squad -- is that it?
it's acted, but it seems to be based as closely as possible on reality, even down to very detailed aspects of the events
(I can't watch things like that; it gives me nightmares)
yes, that was episode 2 - but one of the guys on the firing squad, around whom the episode centers, did not think that the guy had deserted at all, that he had just gotten lost in the fog (as he himself had done).
yes! That was it!
i used to not be able to watch things like that, but, idk if it's being on psych meds or what, but now i can. idk i guess it depends on the thing. i can't watch some things.
i think some people are like, if they watch fiction that is full of scary stuff, able to think "well it's all just pretend, none of this really happened" and that helps, but for me it is the opposite
I just got sick thinking about it; I wasn't watching it but had walked into the room just as the chaplin spoke with him & then the firing squad; I saw that & had to leave the room
i think, if it really happened, i feel some sort of responsibility to know history, to pay homage to these people in my mind, to learn from it, etc etc. and then with fiction, i'm like, geez, the world is dark enough in reality, give me PG Wodehouse and Jane Austen...
if i don't remember them and learn from their sacrifice then they really did die for nothing
I never used to be able to watch but now for some reason I can. and it is very educational
Same here, hurshy. I have terrible nightmares, especially if there is scary music, suspense, or people killed; so I leave the room when stuff happened. I don't know yet if I've ever watched the first trilogy of star Wars all the way through because of that
nef how do you do with the women's side of things? there's another good one I watched called Anzac Girls, so that's less battle and more nursing - but of course that is still all awful stuff
bbl
hurshy, I've seen enough stuff in real life; and my family learned years ago that I shouldn't watch medical shows on TV because I yell at them doing the wrong things. (like talking with"breathing tubes" in, or waiting for the doctor to do CPR or run codes.)
but i got so fond of some of those women - and it was like this one - real people - i read as much as i could about them and what they did after the war back home in Australia and NZ.
My daughter used to get so mad at me when she was watching ER because they showed the doctors doing everything when it's actually nurses who do that!
yeah
i asked one of my doctor friends once about ER and she said that the cases that come in are fairly realistic in terms of what a city ER like that would get, only in reality, like 10% of people with those injuries would live, and on the show, only 10% of them die.
I can READ those things & it doesn't bother me; but I don't care to see a TV show diminish what nurses do or portray fake stuff.
and another doctor friend refused to watch House, MD because MOST of what THEY showed WAS correct, but not EVERYTHING - some details would be wrong (even on purpose for dramatic effect, when the consulting docs for the show TOLD them it was wrong), and she was afraid that at some point she would do the wrong thing herself for a patient because she'd mixed up something from the show with the truth
House! I would yell at him for using his cane on the wrong side of his body! Geez!
well, there is at least one occasion where a health professional does chastise him for that very thing
(I SO wanted to teach him how to use a cane right!)
he knew how to use it right, he just didn't want to
the character, i mean, not the actor
LOL! I know, I'm sounding nuts now, aren't I?)
no wonder he used drugs then! If the character was so dumb stubborn; then he shouldn't have had pain meds!
i LOVED dr park, the asian doc in the last season. she was a riot. i wish they could've kept the show going just so i could see more with her. but they couldn't - i mean, it was an 8 year run so there were many reasons factoring in to it, but one of them was that Hugh Laurie's leg was getting like actually messed up from all the fake limping.
Yep; I bet that would mess up a good leg.
i love hugh laurie SO MUCH. he is married to his original wife, their kids are grown, she isn't even like, a glamorous middle aged woman like an actress would be - she looks like a totally ordinary middle aged woman. you gotta respect that.
That's true. I think that there are more "normal" actors & spouses than we know because we never hear about the normal ones.
my dream in life is to get the message through to him and implemented that he needs to play Ebenezer Scrooge in a new movie version of Christmas Carol. because every christmas i ask myself, "which version do i feel like watching?" and the answer is always, "the Hugh Laurie version", only it doesn't exist yet.
LOL! That would be a great character for him to play!
Maybe you should write a screen play for him!
well, i mean, i have no experience writing screenplays... but i did send a message to his agent about it.
i wonder what the Make a Wish foundation would do if someone came in with a wish like that. but i suppose they only do kids, and no kid would have that wish.
Somehow someone needs to write a screenplay for Laurie as Scrooge.
but not Moffat. he'd kill Tiny Tim or something.
Oh, Yeah, I guess one would have to pick out the other actors you'd want in that screen play also.
BRB, I need a sweater since I'm chilly right now
i'm not picky about the other actors. just the people in charge. Moffat is showrunner for Doctor Who for the last several years, and for Sherlock he also plays a big role, and to fans, he's famous for killing off all the people you love.
and i need to go and NOT brb, but, nice chatting Nef, ttfn!

shucks . . I was gonna go to Wilt Chamberlain next
For you basketball fans, saw a funny post this morning. Someone had taken the famous photo of Wilt after he scored 100 points in an NBA game (holding up a sheet of paper with the number 100 written on it) and pasted a photo of Geno Auriemma over Wilt's face
Unfortunately, I don't know who Geno Auriemma is, so I Googled him'
(I know he's a coach & sort of the wrong color....
His team just won their 100th consecutive game
Thanks!
"Wrong color?"
