My sis tried calling her last year when Mom died, she pretty much told her she was sorry to hear it, but after that she more or less said she didn't see much reason to stay in touch any more. Of course she liked me better, maybe I'd have more luck.
Sis can drive folks batty on the phone at times, she tends to natter.
Ouch, maybe dro-p her quick line first... letting her know that it's okay if she has a new person in her life, but that you really miss her... letters and e-mails can be read and ignored..but gives her a head's up.. then 2-3 weeks later give her a call at what might be a quiet time..Sunday after dinner maybe? You can take your cue from that. It may be too paingul fror her to be reminded.. or she may wish to truly cut ties..but nothign ventured, nothing gained...
Well, we never did talk much, but got along so well when together... might try it. And you're so right about the connection breaking, though, I get some of that from my de4 departed hubby's family nowadays.
WERe they married a long time? Her not resonding to the funeral of your mom is kind of telling, but you don't know what she may have been dealing with...sometimes the death of a spouse can take years to get over and contact is painful... I don't know - just spit-balling???
I am glad to hear that some of Easy's family are in contact.. it may help that you have a houseful, so nieves and nephews... but it can be so very hard and tricky for some.
Pretty long, he married her in Scotland while in the Navy, and she and her son came here with him. They had some good years, but then he got very ill and she ended up nursing him along for years.
Takes a lot out of you, I know that personally.
Oh dear... do you know if she may be struggling otherwise in general life? Years of not owning your own life can take quite a toll.

First time I met her in person, he was in the hospital, and she'd not yet gotten her driver's license in America. She met us on the front stoop, handed me the keys to their van, and said, "hurry, let's go and get me hoosband" - loved her accent!

Not sure if she's in the country all the time any more, she goes home to visit a lot. Showed us a pic of her family home over there, was basically a small castle/ manse on a small mountainside, amazing.
So you were quite late into her life with your brother... makes it harder... drop her a nice card aying you miss her and liked that you always got on..see where it goes after a call.
But she comes back because of her son, he's all Americanized. He used to translate for me, haha, sometimes I simply could not make out some stuff she'd say, it would frustrate her, she'd go get him, lol.
So, she's not likely hurting for money - or at least a lacve to live if needed...that's something. so many struggle after a spouse passes... :(

I highly recommend taking a sunset tour if in the area, breathtaking scenery and the people who have cottages/houses on the route are so friendly.

Yes we got thunderstorms here and lots of rain. I loved the thunder, the louder the better. It's a bit cooler here, the breeze is refreshing.
We did hear thunder - from across the lake; it's likely Scrabs saw some action. I have a friend near NOrth Bay that posted.. I guess they got a wild ride for a while with the weather... I am glad that the temperature has dropped. Need a good night's sleep desperately. Just waiting for the apartment to cool down now :)
The rainfall was massive for a bit, it was coming down in sheets sideways. We got quite a few storm fronts back to back. We needed it though.
WE could use some of that here. I though maybe this evening, but nothing... hopefully tomorrow. At least it's cooler, so I can go out and water.

It's sad that there is a price tag on everything and they want to sell or destroy it.
As we "progress" more and more as humans, national and provincial parks become infinitely more important in our lives. These treasured places speak to us on a level that nothing else can. These parks are larger than ourselves, and humbling in their sheer majesty, reminding us that there are better places in this world for us to set our souls free to roam and to imagine.

Uranium mining regulations - Obama put a moratorium on mining in the area, now they're trying to lift that. He's after any and all regulations that slow down his chosen favorite energy producers.

I talk to kids and parents about preventing brain drain over the 10 weeks of summer vacation.
my advice to them over the summer is to keep reading to them or have them read to you as much as possible, and then to make any learning fun and a part of whatever play you're doing!

it's funny, i'm totally the opposite. i don't do anything at all formal with the boys, but we read read read, and talk a lot about stuff we see and do. we did just go on a huge book run yesterday, stopping at two different libraries and one bookstore to stock up!
they are going to a really cool thing in a few weeks called "College for Kids". It's run by our local university, and they take 4 different classes through the day. Day camp for a week.

Daniel is taking clay sculpting, soap making, DIY art, and sugar sugar, a cooking class. Nick is taking a Roblox coding class for the two morning sessions, then clay sculpting and some other type of craft class.

this is the first year they both are in the same week at the same time. it's split by age groups, and i used to have to shuttle one or the other of them for two weeks.
Momma gets a week of reading day camp
Folks 62 or older can take classes for free at SUNY @ Buffalo. I will have a tough time making choices.
doug accidentally took that week off from work. so we can't really go anywhere, and he'll now be underfoot. i told him he needs to find projects and stay out of my hair, because i have house plans!!!

he has to pick weeks in january. so he picked a random week in july. just happened to be the week college for kids happens. so no family trips.

My niece fostered a mom beagle and her puppy while attending school. He was the only one in the litter and the mom wasn't very good at taking care of him. Anyway, my niece adopted the puppy, Bert, and have just heard she is putting him in 5 day school to break his biting habit. He is a little cutie.

Yes I saw them on the TV. They were rather spectacular even if I am not a big fan of fireworks. i find they scare too many animals but that is just me being a grumpy old git lol
I am fine zooz, I try to stay stocked up on things in case I can't or won't go out. I did eat a lot of cheese, crackers pepperoni sticks and store-bought potato salad though. It was too hot to cook! Then I mad a huge supplu of basmatti rice in the microwave and did a big stir fry... then just heated that up for days... thank goodness I like leftovers ;)
Have always known that some critters don't do well with the loud noises, but it has really only become a more public issue lately. I did read somewhere that soundless displays are now available, not sure where they are made. I think that would be the way to go. I'm not a fan of the idiots that shoot them off at 3 AM...grrr

Trouble with beer traps is that you have to find somewhere to dispose of all the bodies. Not much fun when you collect over 300 slugs a night!

We all can't like the same things - what a dreafully boring world it would be!
helen -- I enjoyed the third doctor (John Pertwee) immensely. He had companions that were believable and a real panache. Tom Baker is well-known and was I think the longest of the old doctors, he was excellent, but I did find some of his companions tedious. Of the new doctors, David Tennant was excellent, but I actually preferred the energy of Matt Smith.
The first doctor, William Hartnell, always seemed so very very old (he was younger than I am now!), but I loved the stories...
SJ - When I say original, I mean I'm really old enough & it's the first one - didn't he have a 'white man's loose afro'?

Honestly I find when you go that far back, a lot of the "classic" sci fi are classics because they're all we had. The modern ones are better storytelling imo
I think the special effects in the new ones are FABULOUS. But I rather liked the short installments over many weeks instead of the one-hour full stories. I guess it's a sign of the times and our shorter attention spans.

Please don't anyone mention Sylvester McCoy (Doc no 7) as I went to see a play about a waiting room in a vasectomy clinic (can't remember the title now) and was sitting in the front row. SMcC was the lead actor and spend entire play stark naked with shaved 'parts' just abut 5 feet from my face. Never forgotten and never to be repeated, one hopes!

This is all I'm going to say about the modern Doctors - Stephen Moffat was great when he was writing for Russel Davies (who was a brilliant writer/director/show runner) but as soon as he took over the whole thing went downhill. (my humble opinion)

SJ - nope, impossible to pick one favorite, don't watch that much TV. Was actually accosted by an interviewer in a mall once, who asked that very question. I couldn't think of anything, so I asked him what everyone else was saying. He started to show me his sheet (I saw a whole lot of 'Friends'), then he wised up & said, no, I had to think for myself. So I said, Jeopardy. Then I said, no Star Trek Voyager, then I changed it to something else, then he said, ok lady, we're going with Jeopardy.

Sometimes, when I walk into a waiting room, and all the seats are taken, I point to the best seat & say 'You're in my spot." (This is true, I swear, I am this ballsy.) Lotsa times people will make like they're going to move for me, but it floors me that the majority of the time they don't get the reference. Then I have to explain it to them, then we get to talking, and eventually people scooch over so I can sit down. I highly recommend doing it, worth it those few times that people actually do get it - "Who do you think you are, Sheldon?" "You don't even look like Sheldon." and my favorite, "Sorry Sheldon, here you go!" hahahaha
all day long, I am now deeply into the old westerns, which I had NO appreciation for until now.. wow, they are all morality plays teaching lessons htat we would all do well to pay attention to now... I adore The Rifleman especially <3

'Bones' was another series I loved. Except when Brennan got buried alive! I'm sure the writers used to giggle over ways they could gross viewers out. Not to mention the number of people running for various reasons who ended up falling face first into a rotting corpse. lol
Where are the aussies? Toni Collette is an aussie, you guys have a lot to be proud of in this one woman, what a great talent. Playing 5-6 very different characters in the same show. Hard to pick a fav, but I loved when 'Gimmie' came out.

I missed that completely, that's horrible! I totally relate to the part where something 'bad' happens to a man & all of a sudden you're the main root cause of ALL his problems. The abusive part, I went through that too. The physical damage part though & the rehab - that does sound like hell.

Our dear departed Renny went through similar after her hubby was seriously injured by an SuV. It came right in the end but, and I'm sorry to say this, if he hadn't been injured and so unable to help himself when the fire broke out, she (and he) might still be here. But there's no point in pondering on the what ifs. Sadly, things happened as they did.

An unbelievable number of (relatively small, seemingly benign) nations spending double digits billions. But, of course, the USA leads the pack with $682 BILLION spent yearly.
