Hi, Helen in Calgary :-)

The thunderstorm has just about left here - probably moving north, I gather!
Did you get any of that hail yesterday? The pictures from 22X were incredible!

No, yesterday clouded up a couple of times, but it couldn't work up to do anything dramatic. I'm hoping to morrow that it leaves me be until after 4 pm - bus travel in a storm is no fun!

I hope you're headed somewhere exciting !

pretty okay, thanks
closing in on 200 words without the list, but it's pretty slow going at this point, haha
wow, good job!
well, lots of 7 help in the chog, that was nice
I keep getting distracted by various things, too, just watched an interesting segment on PBS news about how one-third of the Navajo Indian nation doesn't have "grid" electricity, wow. I had no idea.
some have managed to get solar, which would seem ideal, really, out in the desert as they are.
indeed. My husband and I are looking into that too, for the tiny house we want to build.
oooh, I love tiny houses!
so do we :) We so long for a simpler life. And we are gonna make it happen.
name that proper noun: departement in the south-east of france, named after a river.
{{sprite}} {{rbud}} hello my friends. how are you both this flip?
no takers? It is The Ardèche.
*hugs rose* Hi dear friend, great to see you. Just read your email, will write back after babble. You take care, ya hear? And will you finally get that cleaning lady???????
yeah, i hear you. i think this might be the straw on the camel's back sweetie. a little on the scary side too.
more than a little. And you owe it to yourself (and me, not unimportantly too :P ) and many other people to take better care of yourself. Which means, getting that cleaning lady to take all the heavy work off your hands. Vacuuming, mopping, making the bed, cleaning the bathroom and kitchen.
fireflies. Lovely grid. Tiny hint: that X is used a lot more than you'd think. Have a blessed day and a peaceful night, all. Rose, sweetie, will email you. *hugs* for Rose and rbud, and an extra one for my bestie ;)
WTG SPRITE !! and so lovely to 'see' you. xoxox
First run through and I have 96 words left to find. Will come back later to see if I can find any more. Happy babbling everyone!
Good day, Babblers.
Hello, Scrabbler.
Dear Haz, how are you? ((Haz))
I'm well. Just back from walking the dog and am settling down to babble. Good to see you!
Just the other day I was thinking of you and our brains with synesthesia. I wish we could talk/meet.
I know. I still get strange looks when I describe ticker-tape.
And I see timelines and calendars in my mind so have birthdays all arranged and memorized.
Yes, I see weeks and months going from right to left which is not the usual, apparently.
I found a synesthesia research team in Australia and did some surveys for them.
Did you? What sort of explanations or light did they shed?
Mine are left to right.
Interesting. Right to left for future, left to right for the past for me.
They are gathering data. The latest survey was about seeing certain colors with numbers. I don't do that.
I see shapes with music.
No, I'm glad my doesn't extend into tastes or colours.
Proper shapes or kind of cloudy?
And are you an empath too?
Geometric shapes, and curves.
I feel a pang if I see someone close to me with a sore. Is that what you mean by empath?
Read about an empath personality--intuitive, and feeling emotions of others very deeply, etc.
I will. It's all fascinating, different personalities and how we interact.
Did you ever have a concussion?
No, never.
Would having an empath personality be a drawback for someone like yourself who is dealing with people and their difficulties all the time?
Some people, after a concussion, develop special brain abilities.
I certainly don't remember having anything untoward happen.
I've read about people beginning to speak in different accents etc.
Absolutely, Haz. I feel emotions so deeply that my work is exhausting. Bad diagnoses and situations hit me hard. I want to adopt so many kids that are living in less than optimal conditions.
I can understand why you need to get away on holiday etc and being an introvert means that it's a struggle to be around lots of people as well.
Read about Derek Amato--began playing the piano like a classical pianist after a concussion.
Really? That's extraordinary. Hand me the mallet.
Introvert + empath + synesthete + Highly Sensitive Person (Google that)---> challenging
Hahaha.
You exhaust yourself, in other words.
Yes, which is why I require so much solitude.
Haz, please email me. My address is in my profile.
I completely understand, I enjoy being on my own - it's so much less demanding.
Will do.
Right, I've taken a note of it and will drop you a line later today.
I am in the office all day and on call too....waaaa.
Waiting for all those needy folk to ring so that you can sort out their lives.
And then tomorrow my flooring removal and installation begins for 1 week. I want that to be over.
It's never fun getting house renovations done, but oh, how great to have it finished!
We did quite a bit of house stuff last year and it felt like the house was upside down for quite a time. It was worth it in the end.
Are you getting the whole house refloored?
About 3/4 of the flooring is being removed and replaced. It has been needed for 15 years but I delayed it with other expenditures. The new flooring will transform the house. I have bags and boxes filled and stuffed into rooms that are not being refloored. Remy Rabbit is confused.
Poor Remy! You've had a lot of work to do but, you're right, the house will be transformed.
The problem with any sort of decorating or refurbishment is the way it throws up other things needing done.
I will need to isolate Remy in one room during this project. He has run of the house, except for Gulliver Rabbit's room.
Painting is the next project and I enjoy doing that. This project has prompted me to declutter--donating or tossing so many items. I have collected a lot over 29 years here.
Lots of people struggle with decluttering but I think it's liberating.
My house already looks so much larger after clearing these rooms out. I need to have less in here.
Scrabbler -you're a synesthete?
Yes, me and Haz are. Are you?
Oh, yea, I just read down the list. Very cool!
No, not at all.
Audiovisual and visual-spatial.
Wow!
And there I was about to organise a Babbler register of synaesthetes.
Ticker-tape synesthesia, calendars, timelines, etc. I cannot not do it.
What is that?
I see words, conversations, as a ticker-tape scrolling across in my mind.
Every word someone says, or that I think, is visualised as a word. It's like reading continually.
So, in a setting with many people having conversations, e.g. a party, my mind gets all messed up seeing words and conversations. And I dislike movies or TV unless I can use that caption control, is that what it is called?
Yes, exactly, Haz.
And yes, lots of people talking together is impossible. I switch off.
Yes, I just cannot attend parties or be in restaurants---so overwhelming.
I have never heard of that! So do you dream in pictures? Pictures only? Pictures with words?
I dream very vividly with conversations/scenarios.
I see every word that I hear.
I have VERY vivid, detailed dreams.
And it's frustrating if there's a word you don't know how to spell because you can't really 'understand' it.
Yes!
Fascinating! So what do you see when you read?
I see those words and my brain is happy.
Words. Just words and it's great.
I imagine doctors love you.
And I am happy without TV or going to the cinema. If I watch a movie here at home I use the caption option so I can see the conversations.
I like instrumental music because you don't have to process words.
I would love for my brain to be studied so that I could understand the wiring.
Do either of you have perfect pitch?
No, certainly not the ability to know exactly where a note is pitched. That would be lovely.
Synesthesia is in such a small percentage of the population though.
INteresting, Haz. I struggled with learning to play instruments--I couldn't translate a symbol into an action with my fingers. My sisters tried to teach me piano, violin, etc. I cannot do it.
Yes, godthaab, we are a tiny minority.
Relative pitch? (I am a musician, by the way)
I translate music into shapes--curves and geometric shapes. So songs have their distinct patterns to me.
Haz, translating a symbol into action is pretty complicated. I have "normal" students who find that difficult. I often wonder if it is a maturity thing. The older the wiser sort of thing.
I have to get ready for work. I would much rather continue this conversation.
I have a synesthete friend who translates notes into colours.
I have always wanted to be a drummer...maybe I should try that.
Bye, my friends. Enjoy the day.
Scabbler - have a good day!
Drummers still have to read.
I can understand music okay. I did lots of languages and realise now that it was made easier because of the synaesthesia.
Bye, Scrabbler, will write later.
Bye, all.
Bye, godthaab.

So it can. Ty vicuna.

Sorry, wrong box

Lol. I preferred Mools' cryptic clued!
was going to say, some prefer the more direct clue method
... clue...
my pop was a big cryptic crossword consumer...I never really understood them myself
though, I've grown into it now of course...it's more fun
14 to go here...
Ooh. The satisfaction of figuring out a cryptic crossword clue is wonderful. My favourite is 'GESG'. (9 4). Answer.... Scrambled eggs.
It took me many weeks of looking at the cryptic crossword in the Irish Times, being completely baffled, then looking at the answers the following day & having that cerebral light-bulb ping.
oh, I get it...col
er cool
yeah, I find it fun now to clue that way...after all the literal clues for many of these words are meaningless for most
aslo am reluctant to give away more letters like re + pe4 for instance
and I try as hard as I can to also avoid the "spelling" out ones, but sometimes I gpt nothing
not that there's anything wrong with those methods, just personal choice for me
Meanie!!! Share & share alike, I say. (As a dedicated trawler for clues in the chat).
:)
woohoo, two words in under a minute!
What are the odds
Thinking about cryptic crosswords - mydad left school at about 8!1 He bpught the Daily Telegraph every day which has a HARD crossword and he would get home, put te kettle on and finish the puzzle before the kettle boiled!1 And he didnt write the clues in because it made it too easy with some of the letters in!1
very cool

Ruby & the electrician are probably canoodling as I struggle along with this wretched grid. Way To Go Rubrs
45 left and this grid is not fun anymore...
... I recommend the list ... it's not so hard with the list ... even frustrating with the sense that I should have seen those ones I missed
Have you listed, Bea?
Yes, I've got the list. And it is infuriating when you see the ones you missed.
I may have to play on a bit...Hubs in running the vacuum. Don't want to interrupt him...
... hey, when he's done your place ... he can come and do mine too
Poor guy! Now he has me AND my Momma to do for...He's a good man.
Down to 20...break is over...
Whoa Boy!!! A man using a vacuum cleaner!!! A rare sight indeed.
Bravo, bravo! Give that man a medal.

question of the hour: why does my dictionary (the question mark to the left of my word entry) give me "edger" as an answer to all queries?
no idea, maybe you need to clear you browser cache
hmm. I'll try that later moolingwa - (cache-clearing always leaves me with having to replace stuff, lazy me). My printer stopped working for no apparent reason as well . . . . and there are funny whirling things that look like little plates hovering in the air outside my window . . . .
but thanks for the idea, m
don't clear cookies or saved passwords
just clear temporary internet files
Ahhh!
nope - this is definitely not my day. I didn't really need a definition anyway, just curious. Thanks for the information for future solutions though.
Well, I tried getting a definition and got a definition for "magniloquent" instead. There was a period previously when it kept giving me definitions for the wrong words (various different ones), but I thought it had been fixed.
I just checked, I am not getting the right definitions either.
thank goodness, it's not just my computer. I do like "magniloquent" much better than "edger" though -- I never would have looked for such a mundane word as "edger" *superior snark*
Enable has a disability.
we are each being assigned our special word-for-the-day
Gillie, did you do anything special to fix it?
No, I kept checking it periodically. I think you can enter the word you actually want at the top.
true, Gillie. Or I just google and get the full definition.
"Magniloquent" seems a bit rude to me. Curiously, it also gave me "comprehension" once, then went back to "magniloquent".
it may be a problem with dictionary.com
I think I see the problem
looks like dictionary.com changed the formatting of their URL, so the way this site parses the variable (the word in this case) is no longer correct
So we'd need an update on this site to fix the formatting of the link to correctly submit the request to dictionary.com
Yes, I assumed it was something like that last time.
hello 137 to go

then give your monkeys a banana for me silly!
I had narrow down the third letter and then got stuck. . .
I have been packing tonight. We are leaving for Yearly Meeting tomorrow.
Well I no longer make the rounds I am happy to say. . . although I do a great program called "Conversations with the Other" that I would be happy to take around. . .
I can understand that. How much of your summer do you want to spend in dorm rooms?
I live in the fantasy that I can make a living doing what I am passionate about. . .
I like dorm rooms better than someones sofa in the office. At least in a dorm I can decide when I want to go talk to people. . .
altough even with sofas I required a door I could shut.
Well I have given up on making a living.
good for you. . . but you probably have some retirement money. . ;)
I am not sure I would give up even then. . . maybe just not worry about getting paid. . .
