marilyn - WGN is saying -27 tonight with wind chills of -40. Wind chill is -40 right now, a great improvement from the -50 to -60 of this morning, right? But, hey, this is us! And that -12 you speak of is today's high, the low today, they are saying, is -26. So, yeah cold.

It really hasn't seemed that bad today, with the sun out. But last night we lost power for 2 hours, that was scary.
Yes, the worst winter storms in Canada have been ice storms out east that knocked out the power grid.

yeah, many homes in the east (and norrtheast u.s.) need to have a household generator, to provide heat in case the power goes out... '98 ice storm left some communities in east ontario and west quebec without power for as long as 9 days
Yes dfm, it's those ice storms that are the worst. We have not had many over the years, certainly nothing like yours!
was fortunate to live in an area where the power went out three times for less than six hours total that storm though :) but the neighbourhood just across the main road lost power for two full days
Two hours without power wasn't bad. The temp in the house dropped only 3 degrees. Thank you Com Ed guys. If it had lasted longer it would have been a lot worse.

personally think things are easier for the Canadian areas since it's pretty much a yearly thing and everybody is ready; in the northern states it seems that fewer are ready for these storms and houses aren't as insulated (haven't really lived in the northern u.s. much though)

Yeah marilyn, I'm glad you were able to retain heat. I know what it's like to walk into a house without heat (ages ago), that's when my neighbor introduced me to the thermocoupler :) I spent the night at their place. And yes, we just have to get through tonight.
dfm - So true. My house was built by a general contractor for his own use - so everything top notch, also pain in the butt as everything is custom. But the walls are 1 1/2 plaster - great insulation. You're so right about people not being prepared here. There's always a run on something and there's not enough for everyone.
