Good Night & Happy Babbling, Everyone. I need my sleep tonight.

What do you call a pig that does karate?

Yeah - that was sad.

1:20 am

1:20 am

oh i just worked it out. a pork chop??

a pork chop.

it was just a very corny joke.

1:21 am

lolll... good one.

1:21 am

well i'm still grinning..

I almost thought the whole babble crew was iced over.

1:22 am

nah. when a grid like this one appears one simply cannot stop. the words simply fly off the keyboard.

Not for me!

I am stuck :/

1:23 am

can i help? or would you rather potter?

I guess it an acquired talent?

I wouldn't know where to start to ask for help - but thanks anyway.

1:24 am

pretty much have played every day since March 2007

I meant seeing the words in the grid are an acquired talent - I want to be careful with my words.

1:25 am

sad isn't it? i might be addicted...

No, it's not sad.

1:28 am

kimmy, do you know how to access licket's list? or do you like to just work your way through?

If something feels challenging and rewarding that is a good thing.

So funny about the Lickety list. When I first started playing I had know idea about it.

1:30 am

Hi all. Hey Rose - just emailed you!

Everytime I try to use that list I feel like it makes it even more complicated.

1:30 am

ah thanx lizgirl. {{{{{lizgirl}}}}}

1:32 am

uh huh !!

1:42 am

Profile too :)

wow. It's walkout. I started to look over the archives to see why you all might be behaving out of the ordinary and I saw something where I was call a "sock puppet".

I had to look that one up. I am not that at all. Who would even care that much to try to infiltrate Babble of all places?

1:49 am

not sure what is going on, kimmy.

It seems like a walkout to me.

I don't want to dare make a joke that they up and died -

1:51 am

1:52 am

hard to choose just one when you have four

2:14 am

hey, Rob told Don he wasn't leaving until the 30th. has he got his dates mixed up?

2:16 am

okay, might have been a change in plans either way. I asked Rob and he said probably on tuesday. But Rob is as changeable as the weather, which is saying quite a bit in our climate here, so it may have moved up. If so, we can drive you to Schiphol, no doubt.

2:17 am

was just wondering is all.

2:18 am

if I can drive by then, I will take you, even if I have to borrow a car. If not, I will try and borrow a car with driver attached, lol. I have lovely old neighbours who will gladly help if they are free.

2:19 am

Rob is a darling. But doing some concrete planning with him is not easy. He changes his mind often and expects all around him change along with it, lol.

2:20 am

or know by osmosis that he has changed his mind??

2:22 am

yep, you got it. It took me a lot of years to learn to make my own plans and if they are important to me, to stick to them. Rob is fair, so when I tell him well too bad, love, but I planned based on your plans and I am not rescheduling, he will say that is reasonable. Most of the time.

Happy Pi Day everyone.(3/14) Pretend you can't spell and order a piece of pie.

6:51 am

And so it is. I am a day off.

6:51 am

Always trying to hurry Friday along. That's me.

Thanks, vicuna

8:11 am

got both!

8:12 am

got to 100 - off to work, thanks Vicuna and all cluers

8:12 am

My pleasure, dan2bit.

8:13 am

In principle it isn't hard to figure out which tile a word comes from, but it certainly can be confusing when there are lots of possibilities.

8:17 am

it is definitely harder to reverse engineer the origin tile from a full or partial list of R words than it is to figure out how that particular R (3rd of 4 in grid order) could make a ra5/10 or a ri6/24

8:26 am

I had trouble with that corner R too. One of them is a sewing word and I am so NOT a sewing person. : )

8:27 am

One of my passions, Molly.

8:30 am

hi all. I see stats for that corner r but cannot find the words

8:30 am

the ri5/10 is a plural, if that helps

8:31 am

sorry ra5/10

8:31 am

no but thanks

8:32 am

ri6/24 ... think of two words ... one is a white seed grain used as food ... the other is a competition involving running faster than the competition ... drop the final letter from each word and stick the remainders together

its not la 4?

no, it's another one. it's kinda wavy

9:10 am

I know some things about sewing I am just not seeing what it could be

9:10 am

i gtg will be back...

to deconstruct the other clue, it's 2 syllables - first one is the white or brown food very common in Asian meals, then drop the last letter. the 2nd syllable is, think about a track meet, the running events can be called an ra4, then drop the last letter. Put those 2 together.

12:48 pm

Glad Manafort can't be pardoned on the state charges

12:53 pm

He was hit with 16 new indictments today by the state of New York. Happened shortly after the second sentences were handed down.

1:02 pm

Yep

1:05 pm

Just not sure those indictments will stand up to double jeopardy protections as it's my understanding they're many of the same offenses for which he already stood trial in VA. Though perhaps the 10 counts on which the jury could not agree on a verdict are still up for grabs.

1:06 pm

... double jeopardy usually applies only in the same jurisdiction ... two states ... two sets of offenses

1:11 pm

tall

1:11 pm

als

1:11 pm

oooh sorry

1:12 pm

no, the charges in VA were federal...

1:14 pm

... but aren't the NY ones state? ...

1:15 pm

yes. So the question is - can he be double charged for the same offenses - once at federal level and once at state?

1:18 pm

Found the answer... The Fifth Amendment provides that no person shall be "twice put in jeopardy of life or limb" for the same offense. But for nearly two centuries, the Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled that being prosecuted for the same crime once by a state and again in federal court, or the other way around, doesn't violate the provision because the states and the federal government are "separate sovereigns."

1:18 pm

... they're not the same offense ... they only sound the same ... one is an offense against one act from one jurisdiction ... the other is an offense against another act from another jurisdiction ... they sound similar and may use the same evidence ... but their not the same thing twice ... .... at least that's my understanding ... but then I flunked out of law school so don't believe me

1:19 pm

... the ruling from one court is not supposed to be used in evidence in any way to support the the charge in the other

speaking of malfunctions, did anyone else have trouble with Babble Expert? When I try to use it, it won't load the word list or the chat and even though I completed the grid in Expert, I had to go back in through my browser and re-enter the words in order for them to be accepted.

I just got Babble Expert working again after monkeying around with some things, so hopefully it will work okay for me tomorrow.
