lol thank you
I am trying to get used to babble again. It has been a long time for me--three years or so with only very sporatic attempts at the daily puzzle, but 2020 is a new year of note and I hope for grat thigs. I have freshened my profile as well for those who are interested and care to read it. Happy Babbling, my friends!
... welcome back
Good to see you crossy! Welcome back to Babble land
Nice to see you again as well, Luv. :)
thank you, Dose. ;)
thanks crossy
I enjoyed your profile Crossy and my husband tells similar stories of being the "old man" in the room at work.
:)
... and to welcome crossy back ... something in the game that I've never seen before ... ... "henge" ... it's in the dictionary that comes with the My word List ... it's even in "morewords" ... but the game won't accept it ... ... I had better find a third "h" from the bottom or I'll be right angry ....
do you have he 5/18 and he 6/30?
also he 5/14
yup
... the monkeys thank you
yw dose :-)
... well there's 103 done ... that'll do for a start ... luck to all who continue the struggle
good morning, babblers!

I keep finding pockets of words.

hi corssy.
How is your beloved and that son of yours
crossy...sorry
My beloved is and always will be my soulmate, and she is doing fine. She does not play babble much because of her eyes, but she misses you all. My son is a big young man now, and will be 26 years old next month!
hey cross...staying warm and dry up there?
Howdy Jan! :)
wow, he was just a wild teenager seems like yesterday
it is mild at the moment--barely minus 2C, but there is freezing rain today. :(

Hello babble friends! just here for a minute but wanted to say "hi"! and wish you all a good day :0
Howdy, Eva! :)
Howdy, car! :)
so good to see eva and crossy returning to the babble fold
like the flock coming together again,
having a little more down time at work allows me a little babble time. :)
It has been three years! Tempus fugit!
i hope bacon has been treating you well, Crossy. :)
Have a pound of applewood smoked goodness waiting in the winds as we speak :)

You will pry my bacon and eggs only from my cold, dead hands. :)
bacon is your rosebud.
I figure all those nitrites will keep my body well preserved over the eons. :)
mmmm, bacon
I figured you would still be in bed, Carla. Did you watch the match last night?
Hi all.
I love coming in and people are talking about bacon :)
Howdy, Sukee. ;)
Morning, sukee and others.
Hi Crossy, long time no chat.
HI cross!
About three years by my reckoning. :)
Howdy, MLFfan!
where you been??
I have bacon once in a while, would love it every day but...
I did watch Kvitova/Barty but turned it off after. I have a mild cold but at night I start coughing and it's killing my sleep.
I have some turkey bacon here right now. It's just sad.
Just life happening. Work, and life, hopes and dreams.
I have to go hubby is making pancakes!
My breakfast these days is usually oatmeal.
ah, a winged horse in the grid
I had oatmeal yesterday. still working on coffee today. not sure what's on the menu.
So he is.
I had oatmeal breakfast biscuits.
is that like a cookie, bea?
Yes.
I had Irish oatmeal with blueberries.
I'm getting hungry with all this breakfast talk.
Mmm...Speaking of blueberries...I need to get some from the freezer and use them up.
Breakfast today is scrambled eggs with shredded extra old white cheddar, hash bowns with sweet yellow and red pepper, and diced onions, a few rashers of locally smoked applewood bacon, crunchy toasted english muffins, and a glass of pulp-free ice-cold orange juice.
You win... that makes me feel hungry :)
I'm not a blueberry fan. as far as berries go, I like strawberries and blackberries.
do you write menus for a living crosshair?
Goodness me - I am sitting here wondering what to make for supper :) - hello crosshair - nice to see you
Lol, No, Hokie carla. ;)
Nice to see you as wek, Ursh.
hokie, that is so funny. Reading about Crossys breakfast menu makes me so hunger and so ashamed of my own breakfast.
Tsk hate coming back after 8 hours and keep putting in the same words
agreed, ursh
Just found the gerund...
I have always been a follower of the old maxim: "eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper."
I love a good breakfast but usually just have something light since I don't want to throw up at the gym. Breakfast for supper is different, though.
Enjoy that gerund, sukee...
as a golden retriever owner, I still say demat is a word!
We have a chocolate lab now. he is a beautiful animal, and is a short-haired fellow. No issues with his coat.
we had a chocolate many years ago, def. a different coat! but he had other problems.
woot! found an 8
Me too...11 more of them to go. Oy...

ooh, just got a 9 finally
wow, that is impressive. my goal is to get to 100 left before listing.
hokie what does that 9 start with?
es - you are not speaking to your family
hokie that is interesting as i was typing the st word from that one i was thinking the grid might have that 9

wow, managed to get that, thx bea
Can't believe there are so many 8 letter words
hokie can you help me with it pls?
hmm, hold on
it's a common word mlf
think catholic priests and altar boys
Start with the first three of the word I sued in the clue, mif
ending is most of (4/5) a word usually associated with bob marley and reggae. he is a *****farian.
I don't consider that a common word, LOL
Add the two letters that make the sufix one who and then add the ****afarian
de, es, ma,qu, those are four of my 8's
it doesn't end in opposite of woman right?
no.
I'm off for now, take care
I just told you the ending ;)
no.

I have an re8 that isn't silly, bea
Colds are miserable things. But thankfully time limited
yep.
bea, my re8 is something stayed (the same, behind). what is yours that is silly?
Mine is not allow again
I have two re's: one meaning stayed and the other kept
ty hokie
thx, swmbo. that one isn't silly either so there must be another
oh, just saw bea's clue
are the stats different?
I just got one that means got something back
by the clues/def i would have thought it was the same word
looking for the silly one
re8 x3?
I think we are talking about 4 at this point. still looking for got something back and not allow again
the two i have are pt
ditto
yeah not allowed again has me baffled at the moment

thanks, 'twas a real slog today
Like a gas bottle but with a G instead of a C
as usual it starts out well and then takes a nose dive
rhymes with what you keep your flour, sugar, coffee and te in on your kitchen counter
yep. going to the sewing machine now! but my laptop is right here so I will check in occasionally
dang! whoda thunk? tyvm
what are you working on hokie?
ty for that ga word
still working on these "dinner scarves" (which are really like adult bibs) for my dad
never heard of them? why don't you use a towel?
these will look better than a towel and wrap around with velcro :D
that makes sense
Bibs!
hi champ adult bibs kind of i guess
It would seem. Bibs make a lot of sense, especially during crawfish season, which is upon us, here in the South.
my dad has parkinson's and can't really eat neatly
we should all where a big towel form our neck to our laps so we don't have to worry about bad stains coming out
i am in nc and i don't do crawfish
hokie how is he doing?
Some people start to shake too. Bibs make sense! And now that you say that, I should put some together for when my Father-in-law comes over. He shakes a lot.
MLFAN, I don't do them either. Too much work for too little payoff. Gimme a shrimp any day!
My dad does and it is a nightmare for him to eat or drink.
i will take fish n chips thank you champ
he is not doing well. can barely walk, get up and sit down. very shaky. can't even shower. he had a home health aide helping with that but they quit coming
I bought him some weighted silverware for Xmas and my mom said he likes them
why would they quit coming?
aww that is so nice hokie
they reevaluate every so often and if there's no progress they don't come. I don't know. that's what my mom says but I don't know that she knows what's going on with the insurance and stuff. she needs to make it so my brothers & I can get info from the dr, ins, etc.
I would insist, Carla. How old is your mom?
isn't that an executor?
Agreed. That would be easier. We really don't know how much they understand, and can be making wrong decisions.
if she doesn't know whats going with the insurance that isn't good at all
No, an executor is the one that takes care of the will and estate.
mom just turned 76 in Oct. dad will be 80 in a couple of weeks.
I am my mother's medical advocate.
My mom is 85 and is still in control of herself, but I do have her medical power of attorney if needed. Everyone ages differently.
how does a sibling make the legal decisions regarding parents physical care?
You need medical and financial powers of attorney executed, but getting your mom to agree can be dicey. No one likes to surrender control even to a loved one.
that's good bzz
true natasha
My mom refused to let me help her manage her bills etc and after she died I discovered giant garbage bags of unpaid bills mixed in with junk mail hidden behind various pieces of furniture.
THAT was a fun evening!
yep, I guess we need to talk to her about it. she has also has really reached the limit of being able to care for him.
wow, that is crazy.
natasha OH MY GOD
But I understood... she feared I'd perceive her as no longer competent to live independently, so she hid her low function from me
Would they condsider moving to an assisted living facility together, Carla?
pride i suppose natasha
she did say one day she needs to show us where stuff is in the filing cabinet but she hasn't yet
hokie they both need help
I would never have forced her out of her apartment, I wanted to give her the assistance she needed to remain there, but I guess that she wasn't 100% sure
my mom took care of her mom until the insurance ran out
So if you broach this subject with a sensitive parent, tread carefully
I mentioned that bea, and she said she didn't want to go to a place without windows. I said I'm sure assisted living places have windows and she replied "that look out into parking lots". I'm not even sure they have them there, but there are nursing homes.
I guess I did force my mom out of her house.
They have been in that house since before I was born
Ooh, that is really tough to change.
hokie into a parking lot rotfl
Make sure they're at least filing their taxes... My mom didn't pay for 3 years prior to her death and kept it from me. That was also fun.
they all have windows
But, she could no longer take proper care of herself properly and staye din bed 24/7.
and my brother that lives a couple of miles away has allowed them to take care of his kids their whole lives so I think she's afraid if she can't take care of them no one will.
are you serious hokie??
Assisted living scenters are just like apartments.
we do usually talk about taxes in April, so I think she is paying those
Those assisted living places are so expensive, sometimes it's better both emotionally and financially to bring in someone to the home they love
i hope she is!
A dear friend has just retained 24/7 care for her 90 year old mom, in mom's home. She says it will cost $60K a year but that's nothing compared to what the assisted living place wanted, and her mom HATED that place.
yeah, she & her sister paid someone to come in with my grandmother before she went to a nursing home.
sometimes when you don't know anybody it makes things harder
I'm sincerely hoping to die in my sleep. Pneumonia, heart failure... stroke... PUH-LEEZ
when I was there in Oct. a PT from the home health agency came to evaluate him and she talked mom through finding someone to come in, interviewing them, etc. but mom says she never has time to do anything, but that's not exactly true, she wastes a lot on FB and picking my nephew up from school, etc
I suspect that's an excuse. Maybe she doesn't want a "stranger" in her home?
she has osteoporosis and arthritis in her back, so she is in a lot of pain most of the day and slow moving
I'm glad mom is here with us. She is happier and healthier now. And she is away from the family members who were using her and her money up.
my mom kind of acted like that too towards my dad
It can be a hard adjustment and sometimes spouses are in denial about the other's needs, or they're trying to avoid having to shell out $$$ they fear they may need for their own final years...
I doubt my mom would ever come here and stay
at our house or in the area hokie?
at my house, def not in the area. I mean the only reason she would come to this area is in my house.
My heart goes out to all of you dealing with aging parents and all the stress that goes with it. Both my folks exited this world fairly easily - I hope to follow in their footsteps!
hokie do you have any bedrooms on main floor of your home?
my husband has requested to just be shot if he gets parkinson's or something but I told him that's not really an option
hokie uh yeah you don't want to go to jail
it is hard being hundreds of miles away from them so I can't really help
Yeah, my mom kept asking me to come to visit and put a pillow over her face. I said she could stop eating but I wasn't going to murder her.
This was a marathon...
Congrats, Bea!
Stopping eating works BTW and even many continuum of care facilities allow residents to exit via that route.
My last three were the tu6's
how awful natasha
good job, bea
natasha they allow that??
yeah, my husband's mom just died of parkinson's in Oct and she stopped eating
congrats bzz
Some places do. Carol Woods in Chapel Hill NC does.
Was that hard for your husband Carla?
my dad stopped eating and he was in a care facility i think? they said their wasn't anything else they could do for him so they "took care of it"
my mother lives in a nursing home. she is 93 and has Alzheimers. I am a retired nurse and prior to my retirement was the director of the nursing department of the home she is in. We have been very lucky. My mother pays about $500 CAD month less than her monthly income and the province picks up the rest. The system we have here is that the province pays for homecare up until the costs are the same as nursing home care, then the person goes to the nursing home. The down side of this system is that we don't have nearly enough nursing home beds in the province so many families become extremely stressed in trying to care for a parent or two with a high degree of need. My heart bleeds for people who are in this untenable situation. We have gotten to the point where we can keep people alive for a very long time but we have not made provision for care for those senior years.
i wouldn't allow that to happen to anybody
We are far kinder to our pets than we are to ourselves. Read "Being Mortal" by Atul Gawande.
WHAT do you mean @"they took care of it"???
Yes, was wondering the same thing...
Natasha I read that book, so good.
interesting to read a viewpoint from another country
natasha isn't that nuts?
they fed him by iv? or they just quit giving him food?
with permission i guess they let him go quietly
no he stopped eating
natasha, a lot of people in this country put animals (not just pets) high above people. remember when the zoo shot the gorilla because the 5 yo boy was in the habitat with him? people were going nuts that zookeepers valued a little boy over a gorilla.
if i stop eating it means i'm tired of life so i would hope they'd let me go. unless i decide to do a hunger protest re: climate change or something.
hokie i remember that so unfair
We were looking into having Mom declared mentally incompetent, then she broke a hip and dies 10 days laters. We thought Dad was Ok until then when he asked a dozen times a day when the memorial service would be. He ended up in the Alzheimer unit a couple years later. My brother had the headache of dealing with them. He earned every penny of his slightly bigger share of the inheritance.
true hurshy
swmbo doesn't Canada have legal assisted suicide for medical reasons?
It is a very dicey problem ethically. Our approach was to continue to offer food and fluids but when it came to the point that the person was either not able or resisting we would back off. But at no time if the person wanted the food or fluids was it withheld. That being said, stoopping eating and drinking is the body's natural way of easing itself toward death
So the only legal method of "assistance" is not to push food and drink?
harem
oops sorry!!!!
ty natasha
whoa, massive topic shirt
:-)
shift
You're funny hurshy
Yes we do have assisted suicide but it would not apply to anyone with cognitive difficulties or even drugged with narcotics as many people are when dying of cancer. The person has top be completely compis mentis. Very few take this route as it means they have to do it before they ar3e actually ready to die.
Hospice is much like that in the US.
why thanks you natasha :D
man, i can't type today
i appreciated it too hurshy
Yes, that is the problem isn't it... by the time you are ready to go, they won't believe you are capable of making an informed decision
We need a system where you get to elect, ahead of time, what assistance you will want when/if you reach a certain stage. But I do see the reams of potential legal obstacles, family objections, etc
My mother in law was in hospice and she just recieved morphine and atavan...No fluids and nor food.
we do have a system, you can have a DNR and a medical proxy and a living will and all that
My mom fortunately had signed a very specific medical directive, so that I was able to fend off well-meant but misguided efforts by the hospital to insert a feeding tube and "bring her back"
Yes, same here, hurshy.
But of course there's always someone in the family who thinks you're not doing enough to keep them alive
a living will works as long as your family members are ok with what it says. if they don't want to honor it then you could have troubles.
exactly
I have a very hard time deciding wheter I agree with assisted suicide. But I will say this: in my nursing career I have been at the bedside of hundreds of people as they died. And I once witnessed a dog being put down. No question which one was gentler. BUT I still believe we need to be very careful about assisted suicide. It could very easily trun into a kind of Final Solution
I'm glad that my dad worked as a doctor so that my mom and I are very much on the same page regarding his care
completely agree swmbo
the countries and US States that have assisted suicide do have lots of precautions. whole teams of doctors have to agree and stuff.
we have had a few serious scares in the past couple years where we were reasonably sure he was going to die, and it comforting that we all know that none of us want any extreme measures taken, we were able to argue against a PEG for dad this last time, and then he ended up being able to eat after all
well said swmbo. But I agree w/hurshy that there are fences around the needle in the arm.
a living will works despite family objections. Its an advance directive and as long as you were assessed as having capacity at the time of writing it should be upheld even in a legal challenge
Yes, it works, but it won't always prevent family dissension, sadly
bzz that's what they did to my dad
The safeguards are necessary. I think that instead of going this route we should have better end of life care so people do not have to even consider suicide.
but even if we have "better" end of life care i think there are always going to be people suffering so much pain that the amount of morphine that would effectively relieve that pain is enough to kill them.
Better care for things like Alzheimer's... what would that look like? I have a friend whose mom got Alz at age 80. She's now 95 and no sign of exiting.
also, DNR and living will are more complicated than they sound. DNR frequently says I will permit this except under x y and z circumstances, and in my dad's case where he has dementia that is on and off, it's not always easy (especially for the provider) to see when he is lucid vs when he is confused but just trying to please whoever is there with him
apparently a pretty tough person
Thank goodness they had purchased a long term care policy back when the insurers didn't impose limits and caps.
Im a midwife but I work 2 days a week in end of life neurology care. Not all end of life is painful, it can just have some pretty horrendous challenges. A lot of it is trying to prepare for a good death.
that's lucky natasha
And for sure the living wills are helpful. They need to be made well in advance and family members need to be clear about the person's wishes. But we all know that families differ as to their ability to deal with the impending death
yeah painless one i guess
i don't have kids so i bet it'll be easier for me
god i wish my folks had gotten long term care, it's far too late now. so painful watching my dad live with extreme chronic pain and incontinence and increasing dementia, but his body is otherwise very strong, and we know this could go on for years and years. hard watching him disappear little by little
here we go again - another food word that enable won't accept! seitan
I am 70 and have had my health care directive in place for over 20 years. My sons are fully aware of my wishes and will, I believe, abide by them.
We have shared our directives with our son and hope and believe he will honor them also.
but not all people are comfortable even talking about such things, let alone acting on them.
It's never "comfortable" but it's necessary!
That's awful pippingeek. My heart really does go out to you.
less serious topi, my upper thread keeps breaking and I can't see why!
True but some people cannot even go there. Then when they are faced with it, they can't cope. Part of our society's attitudes toward death :(
in a sewing machine or what hokie?
hokie it hates you lol
and obviously my c isn't working great because I also had "an't" before I noticed it and then I saw topi
it does hate me. yes, a sewing machine. just a few months old, way too expensive Bernina.
hokie I assume you have checked tension etc.? hate it when my sewing machine misbehaves, I don't have much patience with it I'm afraid
I have rethreaded and made sure it's not catching on something. just found the thread tension adjustment. should I try less tension then?
I don't often engage in the chat although I Babble daily. It was nice to be among you all!
I enjoyed reading your input! glad you engaged
glad you chatted today swmbo :)
your input was really thought provoking swmbo. thanks
I should really do it more often. But what I find is that I can't chat and do the puzzle LOL and I am usually driven to complete it
hokie I am no expert on sewing machines, but I always do test runs on the particular fabric and thread I am using to make sure the tension is good. Check you manual
goot go. byeee
if there is anything better than having a cat lay on you and purr and nap, i don't know what it is
bye swmbo
swmbo same here
i agree hurshy
well, I'm partial to my snuggly dog putting his head on my lap
Till you lose all sensation in your thighs :-)
what kind of dog hokie?
lol natasha
yeah, the manual is huge but I finally found troubleshooting and there are like 5 different things. hopefully this lower tension will work.
golden retriever, mlfan
there is a reason many of them are therapy dogs
ohh how lucky you are i love those dogs. they used to be the most popular dog of all time
smart and very sensitive if i am not mistaken
?
Du7/40 please?
the guy who uses a du7/44 to do the other du7/44 is the du7/40
the guy who does the cleaning
du 4/6 opposite of woman
they're the best! last night I slept in the guest room since I have a bad nighttime cough with this cold and he knows he's not allowed on the bed with my husband but is allowed when it's just me, so he laid next to me and therapy dog-ged :D
Alfred P. Doolittle in My Fair Lady is a "common du7"
but don't try hitman because that would just be ridiculous
hokie that is so wonderful
Tx.....thought I tried that
There's a long list of actual common words that aren't in Enable
that was a great triple clue Hurshy
:D
i am going to go now my eyes are hurting too many left for me to find anyway.. bye
bye, til tomorrow
i am very impressed with myself for getting qu7/52
but you're in a society that actually uses that verb hurshy, no? Here in the US no one ever uses that
we just 'get in line'
I didn't get it until the list
hurshy is american
i'm in the US, my flag is just wishful thinking
Ah OK! The flag is misleading
(pats hurshy on back for getting that qu7)
do the irish say qu5 too? i mean, they aren't exactly the biggest fans of the english, but, i guess i don't even really know which words they use or don't use.
I think qu5 is europe, australia, probably canada. I think everywhere but here.
well it isn't france or germany lol
australia and canada are "commonwealth" but ireland isn't
9s: es, su... what else?
it's worked its way here to Disneyworld with all the international guests
pe, de
ooh do you work at disney world?
no, just love to go.
i've never been
we love the campground there
are the pe or the de related to any shorter words?
pe is a pl, de is a gerund, undoing a 7
mk
funny i had the pe8 but didn't pl it
Irish people use a lot of what I think of as British phrases. I guess when you get taken over by another country, sooner or later you fold and adopt their way of speaking.
can give more if you want
i got them hokie, thanks!
I’ve not got the pe8. Could I have a clue please?
it's not a nice word...
sodomite is another term for it
help with ga8 pls

thanks for jumping in, Molly....
and thanks, Champ, for the encouragement....almost gave up on this one...was falling asleep at the keyboard....
I usually figure that when people ask for clues they are not using a2z or morewords. Otherwise, why ask for clues?
well i did not actually ask for a clue...i also thought only Champ and I were here....
Monster grid...glad you did it!
Pen didn't ask...I asked what the last one was in case I had it.
ty, Champ....
need anything before I go?....
Sorry, missed all that. I just thought Pen needed a clue.
well i appreciate your offering one....glad to be done with this one...
Yes, in fact i need 92 clues.... :) Have a good one, and congrats!
hah, ty....heading out then....bye all....
With that, I'm OUT. Not feeling the urge to finish this. Have a lovely, all!
