7:23 am

Happy Friday, Molly.

7:24 am

Happy Friday Bea. It sure doesn't feel like Good Friday. Too cold and too weird.

7:25 am

le8/40 is the most suspicious

gracias Molly and I see it's your birthday - please make the most of it and have a happy one - under these unprecedented circumstances - prayers, health and happiness to you.

7:27 am

Who said it's my birthday?

LOL - I thought I saw that, now I'm rereading - they said "Happy Friday" - I just saw the Happy part -- LOL , well have a happy birthday whenever it is, so there LOL

7:31 am

Faith and begorrah...Enable does not recognize pratie. No potato soup for them.

7:34 am

And for a positive spin, these times are not unprecedented. We made it through SARS and The Spanish Flu, back when medicine was not so advanced. We will make it through this too. Have faith.

7:54 am

Happy birthday to you .. happy birthday toooo yooou..oh.. forget it then

8:23 am

hi Scrabbler, peri

8:25 am

Our premier declared the Easter Bunny as an essential service!

8:25 am

Yay for essential Easter Bunnies!!

8:25 am

NZ PM did the same last week :)

8:25 am

=)

8:26 am

not sure whether bunnies are susceptible to COVI19 tho

8:26 am

Mool, at least they are getting their priorities right

8:26 am

Oh, let's not go there again. Long, strange conversation yesterday about animals and the virus.

8:26 am

have a lot round where I live, and they all seem to be their usual hoppy selves

8:27 am

they are not mool.. they're already lapinated

8:27 am

I say any childhood hero has been granted special immunity to disease.

8:28 am

Let's not hop to conclusions, there's enough hare-brained ideas out there already

8:28 am

And off to the PB with you.

8:28 am

lucky mool

we normally see a lot of bunnies around this time of year but haven't seen any yet

maybe it's the hawks we see constantly

8:32 am

we've got 100s around here....that and prairie dogs

it's weird, mr. homie & I were just talking about the lack of rabbits the other day

8:33 am

that's because scrabs adopted all of them hokie

you think they would've multiplied already if that were the case

8:34 am

we also have foxes and coyotes, not unrelated to the rabbits and prairie dogs

same

Very profound statement this morning, Carla.

thanks, bea

8:42 am

what did you say, hokie?

eek, just noticed there are 57 p's so then I looked at grid total and saw 425.

well, I'm sure I said a lot of profound stuff but maybe she was talking about the spanish to be is not to be

I heard regis looked pretty old now and then I heard he's 88!

I predict there will be a lot of words with suffixes that I will miss today

8:50 am

does the eq 9 have something to do with horses?

8:50 am

no

8:50 am

bummer ty bzz

8:50 am

Yes. It's people who take care of horses.

8:51 am

In the palace.

so nothing to do with gear then

oops

8:52 am

Nope.

I think anything we say today might be in the grid

8:52 am

I was thinking of them as people who took care of the royals. But yes, they take care of the royals horses too.

8:52 am

I think I hae the first 6 letters...

8:52 am

Yeah, hard to avoid 425 words.

is this another roman thing

8:53 am

It ends with questions, except with a double consonant.

8:53 am

was it nagging at you bea?

8:53 am

Well, the word derives from Latin, but otherwise no.

8:53 am

you were sort of in the neigh-borhood with the definition :D

Everything is nagging at me these days, ru.

9:00 am

I used to have the Lickety Zip file on my computer, but have changed computers. Anyone know how to get it again?

how are you feeling today, phan?

9:02 am

The same really. Still coughing. Tired... Thank you for asking!

9:03 am

good morning everyone - did you catch the virus phand?

i so want to use squeegee

9:04 am

Yes, Nan. I work as a nurse in a nursing home.

9:04 am

Getting better, ph? What day are you on with the illness?

9:05 am

I think you have to write to lickety to get expert

9:06 am

Well, I first actually felt sick on Monday of this past week. Was tested on Tuesday, got the result yesterday...Seems to be a mild case so far. No fever since Wednesday

9:06 am

I hope you don’t have it

9:06 am

Excellent.

9:06 am

Sorry to hear that phand -- hope you are feeling better soon.

9:06 am

Scrabs, I know you keep up with all the medical stuff...Is it true that tonic water which contains quinine and zinc can help with the virus?

9:06 am

Oh you know already. I hope it stays mild

9:07 am

I don't know about tonic water but zinc is good for our immune system.

9:07 am

There is so much crap out there, who knows what to believe.

9:08 am

Note to self: increase the gin and tonic intake

9:08 am

Read reliable sources. Dr Andrew Weil.

9:08 am

Thanks, Scrabs.

9:08 am

I think, as with most things, drinking gallons of water helps.

9:08 am

Sorry to hear you're ill, phand. Praying it stays mild.

9:08 am

haha, was thinking the same thing ruru

9:08 am

Can't hurt Ru

9:08 am

Vitamin D is the superstar. vitamindcouncil.org

9:08 am

hope you feel better soon, Phan

9:09 am

Yes, been doing 4000IU instead of my usual 2000.

9:09 am

(that's a Vit D dosage, sorry)

9:10 am

I double my dose from Oct-Apr and take 10000 units daily.

9:10 am

we up our dosage all winter anyway because it is too cold to be outside in the sunshine (when we get some)

9:10 am

WOW. And it isn't mostly pissed out Scrabs?

9:10 am

really Scrabbs 10000 that seems like a lot

9:11 am

I see there are over 400 words today... should stop chatting and GET TO WORK!!!!

9:12 am

that's all the hand sanitizer, Nataha ---- every time you go, you clean the toilet bowl :D

9:12 am

No, vitamin D is fat-soluble. And overweight people need higher doses.

9:12 am

Good to know! Thanks. I'm going to look up dosage for my BMI

9:12 am

For most people 800IU should be sufficient. You only need higher doses if a blood test shows you are very deficient.

9:13 am

I am taking 1000 Vit D and there is some in my multivitamin. I am thin tho.

9:13 am

Not using hand sanitizer here, Nan. Can't get any and don't need it as we stay home. Wash with soap and water.

9:13 am

Thanks for the well wishes all!

9:13 am

Jax I take 2000IU at advice of my endocrinologist. Hashimoto's and osteopenia.

9:13 am

800IU is the recommended daily dose in the UK

9:14 am

Better for you Natasha. I have been using sanitizer at work and it is destroying my hands. So dry.

9:14 am

I dont take any vitamins

9:14 am

Soap does the same. My hands look like Chinese paper.

9:14 am

I'm not a fan of vitamin supplementation in general, prefer to get nutrients from actual food. But can't get the needed amt of Vit D from food.

9:15 am

I take 2000IU on medical advice to, but most people don’t need that much. Sunlight on bare skin for 10 mins a day I s sufficient if you can get it for most

9:16 am

I was fine, Vitamin D level wise until menopause. Actually I was fine in a lot of respects until menopause. Apparently, my body really thrived on estrogen.

using jergens liquid soap. mild on hands.lovely retro hergens fragrance.

9:16 am

SO DID MINE

9:16 am

(Sorry, I'm yelling)

9:16 am

I have to use a lotion and a few drops of helicrysum on my had throughout the day and at night I slather it on and wear cotton gloves to bed.

9:17 am

My parathyroid is playing up which causes low vit D. Also starts to leech calcium from bones 😞

9:17 am

You think menopause is bad... try being put on an aromatase inhibitor to prevent breast cancer recurrence... I literally lost my mind. Couldn't remember my own phone number. Went off it and have been on Tamoxifen instead which permits postmenopausal estrogen production but blocks the receptor on the cell surface.

9:17 am

I use CeraVe

9:17 am

With all the washing and stress, my eczema has flared.

9:18 am

just using regular soap as well, but a lot more often. I am spraying the door knobs, handles, etc. with lysol disinfectant on a daily basis -- more often than I usually do. You just never know if something you touch outside the home is contaminated -- we still have to go to pick up our groceries and mail.

9:18 am

Sorry, Bea!

9:19 am

That's one I use, bichon. But I have to lotions every day as they do not continue to help long term.

9:19 am

it's from the worm poop bea :D

9:19 am

Worm poop is good for you. =)

9:19 am

Bea, I used to have eczema, ut still have very dry skin. Aquaphor helps

9:19 am

Yes, I use that too.

9:20 am

*Imagines Bea getting ready for bed with her white gloves and Minnie Mouse bow : D

9:20 am

My lower legs get very itchy. Aquaphor helps with that

9:21 am

Ooooh Mickey!!!!!

9:22 am

I have to take vitamin D also.

9:22 am

My gloves are actually white and covered with tiny little flowers.

9:22 am

good morning ori

9:23 am

good morning, ru

9:23 am

I see my jokes are falling flat this am, so will quit

9:23 am

My mother used to put vaseline on her hands at night and wear cotton gloves to bed. Her hands were very soft.

9:24 am

(not going to comment there)

9:25 am

Probably wise :D

9:26 am

too early for jokes like that :D

acrabs, are you still here?

9:27 am

nan, speaking for myself, it seems we are all way too serious these days and it's to be expected for sure. Don't go away!

9:28 am

now I am wondering just how many est words I may have missed...

9:28 am

i'm hardly ever serious

9:29 am

Yes, Owl.

9:29 am

I make a lot of jokes at work regarding Vaseline. None of them are repeatable here, due to...well, you know...

9:29 am

may I have an idiot clue for the eq 9 pls?

9:29 am

wasn't going away -- I just believe a little levity now and then helps. That, and being proactive.

9:33 am

nan, a lot of chat this morning; yours may have slipped by. That happens. And (informed) levity sure does help

9:34 am

yw nan

9:34 am

there was nothing informing about that joke - lol

9:34 am

Didn't the late Princess Di have a fling with one of her equ9s?

9:35 am

!!!!

9:35 am

it was flush with humor nan

9:36 am

I swear I entered all the simian words last night, but they have disappeared this am

9:36 am

finally got it

9:38 am

simian words?

9:38 am

she monkeyed the monkey words

9:40 am

nan lately words have disappeared within an hour. So I automatically refresh frequently

9:40 am

also have found with the bigger boards, that the game seems to struggle some times, and doesn't register the words correctly

9:41 am

so much net traffic

9:41 am

I strongly recommend refreshing regularly no matter what size the grid is. I have words disappear daily.

9:41 am

phantom: aarrgh

9:41 am

could be that the server just has too much to do...can only speculate

9:42 am

doesn't an overloaded server just crash?

9:42 am

nope

9:43 am

depending on how the code is written, you can get handoffs dropped/missed, or data lost

9:43 am

it can certainly crash, but it's not the only possible result

9:43 am

wont allow gerries. We use to call potties, po's, chamber pots gerries. possibly goes back to last war

9:43 am

Good to hear that it is happening to other folks. I thought it was just me thinking I had already entered a word.

9:44 am

happens to me every day almost

9:44 am

I switch between two machines, then have to refresh to get everything, but haven't had any other problems except red boxes and fat fingers.

9:45 am

learn something new every day, mool --- I'm not that conversant with hardware problems.

9:45 am

more of a software problem to be honest

9:45 am

but the hardware may be the limiting fact, it's then up to how the software handles it

9:46 am

If I'm losing words, there are so many I'm unaware of it. And often I imagine I've typed something when I didn't - typed something close (like more instead of bore).

9:46 am

I'm the one that gets frustrated when I put the semi-colon or comma in the wrong place in the code and then have to find it

9:47 am

I'm somewhat removed from the coding/scripting perspective now...never really had the patience to do the rote work

9:47 am

I don't do code anymore.

9:47 am

I do talk to developers pretty regularly thoguh

9:48 am

me neither -- got out of writing web pages about 5 years ago -- couldn't keep up with the new scripts any more.

9:48 am

Have 132 left...Need to go do the shopping...May be back later...

9:48 am

I had probs yesterday and had to reenter words I know I had put in already

9:48 am

good luck bzz, stay safe

9:48 am

Bye, Bea

9:48 am

See ya' Bea

9:48 am

wear a mask bea

9:49 am

never did web pages or scripts. quit COBOL in 2007 when I retired.

9:49 am

stay safe bea -- wear gloves and a mask

9:49 am

forget the gloves. Wash hands/sanitize.

9:49 am

found out yesterday one of my trivia buddies had COVID, just got over the fever yesterday

9:49 am

Haven't been in a shop since March 22. If I can't get it delivered, I just do without...

9:50 am

mixi, nj needs cobol programmers!

9:50 am

agree phand! Gloves don't help if you touch your face!!

9:50 am

yeah, I'm fortunately enough to be able to get delivered groceries too.

9:50 am

It takes a ton of persistence to snag a delivery window as well as fast synapses, but so far so good

9:50 am

even got alcohol delivered...and a fridge for that matter, my garage fridge died around the 22nd

9:51 am

yeah, know that tash

9:51 am

This morning I lost out twice to people whose internet ran faster, but 3rd time was a charm. Just kept refreshing that browser every 10 secs!

9:51 am

Fortunately we already had milk delivery, and they also deliver eggs , bread and cheese

9:51 am

mixi - https://tinyurl.com/vcyuu2k

9:51 am

That's great Moo

9:52 am

phand - we are being advised to wear gloves and masks when we go into a grocery store or pharmacy. It is to protect everyone else -- so many people are asymptomatic, that if everyone wears those items the spread of infections is slowed way down.

9:52 am

2ndup 6/24 2nd one clue pls?

9:52 am

195 left. That is more than enough. See you tomorrow. Wear a mask and wash your hands.

9:52 am

yeah, had the service for about 3 years now, it's gotten slammed since the lockdown began, but they've kept up our orders

9:53 am

It doesn't feel great asking others to take the risk on my behalf... so we tip like mad to assuage our guilt. If I were 40 I'd do my own shopping but sadly I'm quite a bit north of that

9:53 am

ML - up 6/24 perhaps if you tipped your coffee upside down you'd have to up6/24 the sugar and cream in

9:53 am

thank you mool

9:53 am

Yeah, we have the ability to tip generously, I'm fortunate enough to still be working, so want to recognize what they're doing

9:54 am

same Moo. Still gainfully employed. grateful.

9:55 am

ahem -- good clue, mool, but clearing throat

9:55 am

:)

9:57 am

Phand, forget the gloves is interesting coming from a health professional. I'm wondering why you say that.

9:57 am

welki. I looked at your link. It's been 13 years since I looked at code.

9:57 am

gloves out in public give a false sense of protection.

9:57 am

no one is current in COBOL anymore, mixi - i'm sure it'd come back to you

9:58 am

What about masks?

9:58 am

I agree phand but then I think about folks touching produce in the store and wonder whether that might not merit gloves

9:58 am

People touch everything in the store. Everything in the store has been touched by the stock clerk who put it on the shelf.

9:59 am

You drove your car to the store and enter without gloves... you've already touched surfaces that might not be so sterile. Wouldn't gloving as you enter the store help protect you and others from virus?

9:59 am

Yes, but aren't the stock clerks wearing gloves?

9:59 am

I don't know, are they?

9:59 am

I wouldn't know... haven't been in over 2 weeks...

10:00 am

And what about when you get in your car after shopping? Take off the gloves? Or wear them and get the germs on the gloves on your steering wheel and surfaces. It's endless.

10:00 am

I think homemade masks wouldn't hurt. As far as the gloves. You touch something the germs are on the gloves. then you touch your face. or your phone or whatever. you are just better off washing your hands and not touching your face.

10:00 am

I agree natasha -- I'm going with our federal and provincial health officers -- wear a mask, wear gloves, social distance but stay home except when absolutely necessary. That means only residents enter your home - not even other family members. Until we have a vaccine, it is the only way we will hold this virus off.

10:01 am

carry hand sanitizer...

10:01 am

It's not the only way, sadly, but our societies have failed to implement the other way we might tamp down this fire: widespread testing, contact tracing, and isolation of infections.

10:02 am

The beauty of wearing gloves in the store is that you can peel them off and deposit them in the garbage bin on your way out.

10:03 am

We totally blew the early testing opportunity that could have kept this fire banked.

10:03 am

That is certainly being done here, Natasha, to the extent that supplies will allow -- more test kits arriving every day and the tracing and isolation is certainly being done.

10:03 am

CDC needs a complete overhaul. Don't take my word for it - check out the This Week in Virology podcast.

10:04 am

We've known for decades that a pandemic was a when, not an if. But we relaxed our vigilance because we're cheapskates. Weren't willing, as a society, to invest in preparedness. Now we're paying with people's lives.

10:05 am

Sorry, my soapbox came out again... back to the puzzle!!

10:06 am

I thought you had invested in a preparedness plan -- Trump trashed it in his determination to erase everything the Obama administration had done.

10:07 am

going to the list now -- will never finish otherwise

10:08 am

Yes, he trashed a lot of it, but there were problems with sustaining federal investment in this over the years since SARS. We humans are short-term thinkers, which is why climate change presents such a huge challenge. Congress doesn't like taxing constituents, they're scared they'll be booted out of office. So why not instead cut budgets for HHS and NIH...

10:09 am

Yes, back to work. 197 to go!

10:10 am

11:51 am

Another 3 weeks of lockdown just announced here. Until May 5th. I stood in line for an hour and 45 minutes yesterday to do my grocery shopping, and when I eventually got in, there was no fresh fruit, veg, eggs or milk.

11:51 am

don't have either of those yet...

11:52 am

oh wow thank you bubba

11:53 am

No limits imposed, Nan, but I was working till 7.00pm, and by the time I got there, everything was sold out. Shelves restocked each night. I think next time I will go before I start work. But another three weeks of this???

11:54 am

just what we have to do, soodle -- they are saying the middle of May here as well

11:54 am

Soodle, only 3 more weeks. I think it's going to be a lot more here

11:54 am

our schools are closed for the rest of the school year, so I figure it will be like this for another 6 weeks at least....

11:55 am

three weeks, still waiting for the uk to give a time scale. !!

11:56 am

The singer/actress Pink.. her son has the virus

11:56 am

I know, I know. But to hear it officially announced was disheartening. Our Minister for Health made a very good point. He said that our frontline workers are saving hundreds of lives daily, but the general public are saving thousands of lives by staying home. Hard to argue with that.

11:57 am

nicely put...

11:57 am

I think you are correct pen -- just hope it doesn't spill over the border, but our returning snowbirds just don't "get it" so I think we will see another spike in cases.

11:59 am

I understand some European counties are relaxing their restrictions. It seems selfish to say, but at least we will have the benefit of their experience regarding recurrence of this bloody plague.

11:59 am

The curve may/may not be flattening, but it is still going up. My conference inJuly is now cancelled. They are feeding it to us a little at a time to stay home. I think it will be much longer.

12:00 pm

we expect second home owners from out of state to increasingly come....it's already started....

12:00 pm

here it is a stay at home order from the governor....also can't go to the grocery store or pharmacy without a mask on....

12:02 pm

just starting to get into the nursing homes.

12:02 pm

Last night, I was particularly down. I opened a bottle of wine, and poured a glass into one of my Waterford Crystal glasses, which usually stay on a shelf gathering dust. Then I lit my Jo Malone candle that I was hoarding for 'a special occasion'. I am Carpe-ing the Diem!

12:02 pm

yes, next county over from me has an outbreak with staff and patients at a nursing home...

12:03 pm

But I thought it was a Democratic hoax?!?! ;)

12:04 pm

in my county we have only 6 diagnosed active cases as of this morning....hoping it stays low, but the influx of out of staters expected will probably bring that up...

12:04 pm

sounds lovely Soodle

12:45 pm

I haven't been to Outer Banks in years. There are just a lot of other beaches closer. Where were you going?

12:46 pm

Kitty Hawk....not too many tourists there at that ime....off season rates....and the weather is usually in the 70s....

12:46 pm

1:12 pm

yes, trif! welcome :)

1:12 pm

thank you, hurshy! how lovely to read

1:14 pm

is the center lone E an eq word by chance?

1:14 pm

DH is watching the latest trump rally, er, press conference - had to escape.

1:14 pm

yes, rbud, eq9 as it happens

1:15 pm

oh, well then, must raise my sights a bit! thanks. :)

1:15 pm

I certainly hope it is a virtual rally

1:16 pm

simple, when one knows what to look for, haha

1:16 pm

it's just a press conference, same as usual, except they have become little more than rallies these days. more lies, rah rah "I'm doing such a good job!" ugh - the worst! DH is NOT a trump fan at all - he is a former reporter and can't turn away

1:17 pm

se 6/27 following the membranes please?

1:18 pm

the second book or movie in a series

1:18 pm

I agree, Trif. He is leveraging the crisis to add to his re-election chances.

1:18 pm

we put the TV on mute whenever his face appears - can't stand to listen any more

1:18 pm

right there with you

1:18 pm

ty hurshy

1:19 pm

common word - I'm going blind

1:19 pm

if you're kingly and you know it, go purr purr

1:20 pm

some of us here feel otherwise. Maybe it would be better not to discuss politics. We all have good and bad opinions. Happy Easter.

1:20 pm

i can't find the eq9 - is it horsey?

still haven't found the eq9 even though I've seen various forms of clues through the morning

1:20 pm

no, it's not horsey, it's royal servanty

1:20 pm

maybe it would be better to not have a president who divides us.

1:20 pm

It sounds horsey though

1:20 pm

yes, horsey. the queen has them

trif, it is the people that take care of royals and their horses (from earlier)

1:20 pm

feel free to express your opinion whenever you want Betsy -- this chat is not censored

1:20 pm

thank you cyber

1:21 pm

I do listen daily to my governor who is doing a very good job.

1:21 pm

you take the Q word for questions and then you double the middle cons and put the E on the front

1:21 pm

thank you

1:21 pm

he hasn't.

1:21 pm

there is is!

thanks, hurshy! got it

1:22 pm

*preens*

1:22 pm

if you really think that Besty, I am sorry

1:23 pm

well, i mean, i think Betsy is sort of right. we were already very divided, Trump just took advantage of that. what he does add is that he stokes violence against minorities.

1:23 pm

I feel sorry for people everywhere this disease is peing politicized --- it spells disaster.

1:23 pm

it's more Newt Gingrich's fault if you trace it back

1:24 pm

I think it is disgusting that people will profit off of it, with the administration's help. People are going to DIE because he didn't listen.

1:25 pm

The polarization that has occurred in this country is appalling. I'm old enough to remember when our leaders worked across the aisle to get things done. Now everything has become an issue to fight over.

1:25 pm

... I'm probably going to regret this but ... they aren't people who were going to vote for him so he doesn't care

1:25 pm

if you are going to lay blame for people dying and ignoring correct procedure to slow the disease -- blame FOX news.

1:25 pm

Newt Gingrich, yep

1:25 pm

yes origami - including who gets to live

1:26 pm

well, cyber, that's where he goes for information, ignoring the experts who are there to advise him, so.....

1:26 pm

Newt was the one who initiated the strategy of just block anything the other party does, and the other party is like, evil, and we won't work together at all

1:26 pm

I'm sorry that political discussions here offend people. We lost our Dee due to stuff like this, so it might be better to save the really spicy political stuff.

1:27 pm

this is not an american issue - this is a global pandemic.

1:29 pm

hm, enable doesn't know ra5 word for a major party

1:29 pm

Molly - I clicked on your profile to see your new icon. I like the message you posted there.

1:30 pm

raves?

1:30 pm

no, anger + r

1:30 pm

:)

1:30 pm

Thanks Origami. I have a few friends that are passing around some positive things because we are tired of all the doom and gloom.

if anyone is interested, here's a podcast interview with Bill Gates about the pandemic. https://tinyurl.com/sxy6kdq If you don't know, his org has been working to eradicate things such as polio for years.

1:30 pm

Ss done :D

hurshy, I try that ra5 every time it's in the grid

1:31 pm

nice going Ata

1:31 pm

I'm only 20 behind you on the 5s ;)

1:32 pm

I do too ... every single time. Like it's just going to magically appear some day.

1:32 pm

hope springs eternal

1:33 pm

ratpie doesn't work....guess you can only make pie with mice

1:33 pm

lol i didn't know you'd make mousepie either

that sounds horrible. are you saying micepie is on the enable list?

1:34 pm

no, but there is mousepie in the Beatrix Potter books

1:34 pm

lol

1:34 pm

The Pie and the Patty Pan specifically

1:35 pm

I need to get outside for a while. See ya'll.

1:35 pm

bbl

1:36 pm

enjoy

1:36 pm

was out there around 5am, but calls most of the day

nice to see the hairpiece here :D

1:37 pm

you'll have hell to pay for bringing that up

oh yeah? someone here wear one?

1:37 pm

especially if you're referring to one Donald J Trump

oh

1:38 pm

I was thinking of shaving all my hair off to be honest....it's a bit unruly right now

1:38 pm

haha, mool - I recall that pun from pre-election days

I cut some bangs last night and did some purple highlights last week

1:39 pm

I'm just wondering whether both of the candidates will be healthy by the time we get to election day. Seems really stressful campaigning, and neither of them are spring chickens

1:40 pm

that's one reason I'm more concerned about who the Dem VP choice will be.

1:41 pm

I keep hoping that one of these elections, where we are given the choice of two bad candidates people just won't vote. I know it will never happen, but it would be pretty cool if it did.

1:41 pm

that and the possibility of whomever it is making this "choice" a bit more palatable.

1:41 pm

Kind of a "Network" thing. I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to vote for them anymore : D

1:42 pm

too many idealogues for that to happen I fear

1:42 pm

The closest would have been when Ross Perot ran

1:42 pm

at least in modern times

1:43 pm

shoot, I've spent most of my life choosing not to vote for that exact reason. Up until 2008, I voted then, and in 2012.

1:43 pm

I'm nationally challenged, so can't vote

1:43 pm

Well, I think we should dispense with the title "President" and use "Grandpa" instead. : D

1:43 pm

then in 2016 we ended up in the hospital 60 miles away for three months during the elections, and it wasn't on our minds, really.

1:43 pm

Or just old man

1:44 pm

I haven't voted in years. And I will not until there is a decent candidate put forward.

my youngest son will be able to vote this year. I told him it stinks there's no one to vote for

1:44 pm

And I definitely did NOT vote in 2008 or 2016

1:45 pm

I really am interested in politics, less interested in voting

1:45 pm

voting doesn't seem to work, anyway, after the highway robbery that happened with the last Pres. election. Sigh.

1:46 pm

Well, the US was the first modern democracy, and as such the system didn't have many analogues to build off of

1:47 pm

Therefore it has some built in flaws that seem antiquated today, but it's hard to change systems, and the way it's built was meant to make it hard to change in order to really need a large portion of the population to be behind it

1:47 pm

as a brit, I find it horrifying that people over there seem proud not to vote

1:48 pm

In fact, allowing voters to cast ballots for the president was added sometime after the founding of the republic

1:49 pm

If you look at the turn out rates, the UK looks like it's trended from the low 60s to around 68% turnout for elections

1:49 pm

The US is about 7-10% lower than that, so not a huge difference, although notable

1:50 pm

not up here, its about 80% turnout usually

1:51 pm

I think I would classify it a little different too...there's not many people I'm aware of that are proud not to vote, so much as there are people either frustrated with the system, or don't value it

1:51 pm

I was getting the turnout rates from here for the UK: http://www.ukpolitical.info/Turnout45.\nhtm

1:51 pm

that's it, exactly, mool. Disgust and/or frustration.

1:52 pm

Or apathy, as you said.

1:52 pm

of course, same here .... I was just surprised at some earlier commets

1:52 pm

yeah, scotland is a bit different to UK averages

1:52 pm

I think that's more an expression of frustration more than anything from people who are politically active, but there's also a decent amount that are less politically motivated, particularly younger people

1:53 pm

Age tends to play a significant factor in whether someone votes or not, at least on average

1:53 pm

I've been entirely apathetic through most of my voting life, but I've still been determined to vote rather than not have a say, but over here there seems to be a bigger connection between voting and results

1:54 pm

I wonder if there's more protest voting over here

1:56 pm

The US age democratic is a little younger than the UK, maybe enough to explain a good part of the difference in turn out over the last 2 decades

1:57 pm

The other thing I'd point out is that in the UK system, there are many more affiliations that you can vote for...for instance in scotland there's the SNP whereas in the US, is large just two party system

1:57 pm

Much easier to find a party that represents your values in the UK than there is with the US

1:58 pm

yes the us either / or

1:59 pm

yes, absolutely, its a huge huge difference

1:59 pm

I would love to see a strong third party emerge in the US. But the money is all in the other two parties and that is hard to overcome.

1:59 pm

thats another thing, our elections don't seem so focused around how much money people have!

1:59 pm

yes, money and structure...and the states are rewarded for supporting the system

well, I have 50%+ on each tile. back to work now. BBL for 137. maybe

2:01 pm

I always vote when the time comes to vote. I have no expert knowledge on the subject either. What I do feel is that if you do not vote and then a person/party gets in and you are not happy about it then you shouldn't really be moaning about it as you never bothered to vote. The one thing I do not like here is that it is not a one vote means a single vote as such. A party only need to get a certain percentage to take that area so some areas will win a seat over another party that would need to get double the amount of votes to obtain the same seat.

2:02 pm

It shoud be all votes for one party added altogether and one vote for the other party whom ever gets the most votes should be the one declared the winner.

2:02 pm

Now I will shut up lol

2:03 pm

I alway vote. I try to investigate a bit prior to the election. The whole process is much too long. six weeks is more than enough.

2:03 pm

Oh but Zoom, people love to moan. People who didn't vote for the person, or the opponent. People who don't even live in the country where the person was elected. Moaning is the name of the game. : D

2:06 pm

I kind of agree with you on that note, Molly. Apart from when someone who gets in and seems hell bent on upsetting the reest of the world and impacting on their lives in other countries then I feel you have a right to moan about them. But Hey I am one of the biggest moaners on the planet. At least it does not impact on peoples lives in other countries haha!

2:08 pm

are you complaining about me having opinions on US politicians MOlly? ---- I don't what else I can say to have you understand that whatever happens in the state affects Canada too.

2:08 pm

*don't know

2:09 pm

do you not have a first past the post electoral system in the UK, zoom?

2:09 pm

oh moaning about other nations is fine as you can't actually affect the voting. what would we do if we couldn't moan about Trump

2:11 pm

we like to moan about Trudeau :)

2:11 pm

trump is an embarrasment to tjhis country

2:12 pm

sammy he is an embarrasment to my generation

2:13 pm

We have local elections so you can choose what party represents your area, Nan. Then we have a general election for the whole of the Uk every four years.

2:14 pm

sort of like our provincial and federal governments?

2:14 pm

yep

2:15 pm

do they have separate areas of jurisdiction?

2:16 pm

no not at all like you guys have

2:21 pm

I'm always entirely bewildered in the US how many types of police there are and what boundaries they have. over here its just police, with the odd one or two specialities

2:24 pm

so does everyone elect your local candidates who then run in the general election? Our candidates are selected by party members only. I understand that Scotland has it's own parliament now, but I don't understand what the regional eletions zoom is talking about are for.

2:25 pm

2:47 pm

much better to see her. Holyrood will always be there!

2:47 pm

Spent 2 days in Iona/Tobermory. Unforgettable. Also saw Highland Games in Newtonmore. Young people speaking Gaelic. Blew me away. They also tossed the haggis!

2:48 pm

we did tour it on another trip - I doubt we will be going back to Europe again -- travel is out for this year with the coronavirus and we aren't getting any younger.

2:48 pm

tobermory is amazing :)

2:52 pm

Oh at flipping long last. Fireworks for me. Happy babbling everyone!

2:52 pm

dont think I am complaining - we are fortunate to have been able to travel for 5 - 6 weeks at a time on 7 different occasions, which is a lot more than most people can do. Every trip was wonderful.

6:35 pm

lol, would be happy to do so

6:35 pm

no, you were fine....they just sound good!

6:37 pm

ooh, they are. Have been making them for years. Reading the history, they were made on Good Friday, taken to market on Saturday and enjoyed for Easter breakfast. Hubby has already snitched one before I cross them with piping!

6:37 pm

i am envious...

6:38 pm

Pen, snow for you tonight?

6:40 pm

had snow last night and this morning....not a lot on the coast, but it was the really heavy snow....i did some shoveling...hoping the warm temps in the next few days melt the rest....

6:41 pm

my brother lives inland near the western mountains...he had crazy weather....snow, high wind, lightning.....said it sounded like a war zone with the trees and branches breaking...

6:42 pm

lots of people across the state are without power....but i am fine...

6:42 pm

ooch, ice is the worst

6:42 pm

yes, bro said it reminded him of the ice storm of '98....he lost power for two weeks with that storm....

6:43 pm

am too familiar with that from the snow belt of NE Ohio

6:44 pm

It is going to be cold here tonight. Freeze warnings. I had to bring my hanging baskets of flowers in. Crazy crap/crazy times.

6:44 pm

i am lucky on the coast....a lot of storms are milder, though occasionally they are worse....

6:49 pm

cooee and greetings to my fellow babblers. are you all safe?

6:49 pm

hi rose....fine here....

6:49 pm

hi granny, ok here and hope the same for you

6:50 pm

all good with me. cross with my sons though.

6:51 pm

why so?

6:51 pm

it would appear that they know better than the authorities and have taken their families away on a camping holiday.

6:51 pm

away from others?

6:52 pm

where they go is probably very sae though. they camp on the Dargo High Plains. still....

6:52 pm

*safe*

6:52 pm

understand your worry

6:53 pm

i am gonna knock their collective heads together....when i am allowed out again...loll

6:53 pm

granny, didn't you just get back from a trip?

We're getting ready to have happy hour via Zoom with our camping group. I miss camping.

6:54 pm

police over here tried to fine a bloke for washing his car at a carwash place at 1am. he told them..he works a 14 hour day delivering food and groceries. 1am is the only time he has to wash his car.

6:55 pm

Sounds like fun, Carla.

Also glad I read that about Molly's freeze warning. We have a frost warning here so I reckon I gotta move or cover my fruits and veggies.

6:55 pm

yes bea. but i was already away before all the restrictions came in.

6:55 pm

i am doing a happy hour of sorts on Sunday with my Connecticut cousin....

6:56 pm

i'll do happy hour any time anyone wants one...loll

6:56 pm

lol...

6:57 pm

the sun is over the yard arm some where in the world at any point in time. that's where i'm gonna be...

6:57 pm

I know that it os supposed to get cold here, Carla. Not sure of a freeze, but we decided to wait until Monday to put all the ginormous plants outside.

6:59 pm

Wow, traveling during these times is scary to think about. I wouldn't want to be in a plane, hotel or any other sort of travel situation.

7:00 pm

come on over here. we are having the most glorious autumn (fall ) weather. sunshine all day, nights just enough chill to make you glad to crawl under the blankets.

7:02 pm

I'm with you, Molly. Otherwise, I would be in the car on the way to see my grandbabies. I miss them so much. We make do with Face Time.

7:02 pm

Molly, where i was there had been only one case of covid-19. it was safe for me to wait until all the panic traveling was over and then make my way home. i sat in Sydney airport for three hours. probably saw 30 people maximum. on the plane we were all sat with a seat between us.

7:04 pm

at least you can do Face Time bea. my grandies are all away camping. *sigh* it's going to be a weird Easter for me. no church, no family get-together, no easter egg hunt, and no family except his dear self.

7:05 pm

I'm glad you get to see your grandkids via Face Time. It is a responsible way to deal with what is going on.

7:06 pm

Oh sorry, that was a "to Bea" comment.

7:06 pm

evening all! can I have the center E stats?

7:07 pm

well i made it through the list and now i have 4 to find...

7:08 pm

sorry Dan. eq 9 as pen and bea said

7:09 pm

Hi Granny, just wanted to pop in to let you know my test came back negative I have a nasty case of bronchitis instead

7:09 pm

Hi Rose! Glad to hear you are safe. But the kids...if they went camping here, they'd get kicked out at best, or fined and issued an order to appear in court - once the courts reopen. We're a destination county, so our sheriff is being really strict, and all of the parks and lakes are closed.

7:09 pm

thank heavens cheryl. that was too close for comfort. take care honey.

7:10 pm

that's great, cherlyq....

7:10 pm

I will so glad I can get antibiotics and get better

7:10 pm

7:10 pm

Good to hear, cheryl.

7:10 pm

thanks pen / bea / rose, finally got it

7:10 pm

i too will be glad cheryl.

7:11 pm

thank you all

7:12 pm

kam, molly, where my kids have gone there are no camping grounds. it's just a natural forested area in the high plains. no power, no loos, nothing but fresh air and mother nature.

7:13 pm

Wow, they're really roughing it! I hope they stay safe.

7:14 pm

oh, and the news on sprite. she has recovered from the pneumonia, is now outside, walking around her home, in the sunshine. slowly regaining her strength. still coughing but no pain.

7:15 pm

back.. so good to hear, granny, ty

7:15 pm

That's great! Did she have Covid too?

7:15 pm

good to hear rose

7:15 pm

Ah, good to hear Sprite is recovering nicely. She was pretty darned sick the last time I heard from her.

7:16 pm

7:18 pm

Last time I heard from Sprite, she said the doctor didn't know if it was covid, but strongly suspected it.

7:18 pm

I has been a long while. I got a M-F job that requires too much Over Time...

7:20 pm

ah....hope it pays well!...

7:21 pm

not well enough! So I put my notice in, but then the virus hit and I delayed my last day, and then I ended up sick, so, we will see what will happen now.

7:21 pm

do you have the virus?....

7:22 pm

Yes, I do, but it seems to be mild at least at this point. Been sick since Monday, got Tested on Tuesday, got the result on Thursday. There were positive cases in my facility so I was able to get approval to get tested.

7:23 pm

well i am sending positive thoughts your way....

7:24 pm

Glad you are feeling better Phand. You seem like a person who believes in "better case" instead of "worst case". That helps.

7:24 pm

Do you work in health care, phan?

7:25 pm

Yes, I am a nurse.

7:26 pm

Thanks Molly, I do try to be positive, but I actually have to work at that, my first inclination is to be negative...

7:26 pm

Bless you for delaying your departure.

7:27 pm

It was necessary. But now I am not there, and it is getting tough in my center.

7:27 pm

I'm so glad to hear of Covid positives getting well and overcoming this. Gives me hope for so many.

7:27 pm

It was necessary. But now I am not there, and it is getting tough in my center.

7:28 pm

I bet...some nursing homes here are getting hard hit...

7:28 pm

It is looking like ours will be one of those...

7:28 pm

Phandmd, prayers for healing, and for Sprite and Cherlyq, prayers of thanks!

7:28 pm

Oh, that's awful.

7:29 pm

thanks so much its sad this is effecting so many different country's and people

7:37 pm

and back. over here they are discussing pulling us retired nurses out of retirement, retraining if necessary to bolster the health care workers.

7:38 pm

how do you feel about that, granny?

7:39 pm

have wheelchair, will travel..... i'm very close to 70 years old. not sure if they will ask me.

7:39 pm

Texas has done the same thing or at least our governor has cleared the way for that and graduating some early too

7:40 pm

but the younger retirees may respond. and there are those who have been forced to retire prematurely by the chinese companies which have bought into our hospitals.

7:43 pm

yeah i know. no comment is necessary. trying not to be racist. to tell the truth i do not have any issues with the everyday chinese people. it's heirarchy and politicians i have a problem with.

7:52 pm

heading out....goodnight all....

7:53 pm

sweet dreams, penquis

7:53 pm

sweet dreams pen. sorry to have thrown such a bomb into chat.

7:54 pm

you didn't granny - am not informed enough to reply

7:54 pm

I don't think that was a bomb, Granny...

7:56 pm

thanx peeps. i have never been racist in all my life. i have worked with just about every race of nurse there is. but this time i am angry, so very angry. granted what i have been told is second hand and if it proves to be untrue i will back off.
