I have greyed the left column - FEAR ME

9:06 am

left and bottom here

9:06 am

you're the GOAT trif

9:06 am

lololol - gretchen weiner will love today's grid!

9:06 am

wtg Trif! I bow to your greatness

9:07 am

hahahah harry - I MISS my goats so much! they have totally bonded with the DH since I have been in isolation.

9:07 am

I had no idea trif - did you test positive?

9:08 am

no, was exposed on june 4th. been shut in my room since...retested wednesday, anxiously hitting refresh every ten minutes today, hoping for second negative

9:09 am

what a hassle. sorry. and sorry you're stuck in a room with only a 90 word grid

9:10 am

Trif, how awful for you. Hoping for the best

9:11 am

cain

9:11 am

the first day was a nice break from people-ing. the first day. pretty sucky for the rest of the time. thank goodness for babble and jigsaws

9:15 am

oooh I did watch "the good liar" which really surprised me! has anyone else seen?

9:15 am

no - I need a new show to watch

9:15 am

its a movie.

9:16 am

nope.

9:16 am

our a/c is broken. was just out yesterday buying fans

9:16 am

bummer.

9:16 am

indeed

9:17 am

all needs to be replaced, since it's the old coolant.

9:17 am

i need to put our window fan back in - at night it is as good as ac

9:17 am

wish it would rain again first though - I feel at this point I would just be blowing more pollen in

9:17 am

yes we try to trap hte night air in the house....but when it stays in the 70s and muggy at night its tough

9:17 am

I use ceiling fans. . . only a/c a couple of days a year

just visiting this campground, Harry

9:18 am

ceiling fans are great - I installed them in all the rooms in our last house

9:18 am

fun carla!

9:18 am

I love them and they help with heating in the winter

9:19 am

we always lost the remote controls.

9:19 am

my dad did the most brilliant thing at his house - they have a huge deck, with a table on it where he and his wife would sit to eat dinner, lunch, coffee, whatever. he installed a ceiling fan over it, outside....never a bug did bother them

9:21 am

I am just so reluctant to cook and heat up the house. I'll run the exhaust fan, but it still is a huge heat generator

9:21 am

maybe porch is a better word? veranda? it has a roof, anyway, but no sides?

9:22 am

agree, harry. I have to be convinced to even turn the fan on, really

9:22 am

porch works

9:23 am

we new englanders have such a strange relationship to house temp, I find. in the summer we cool the house to the same temp we heat it away from in the winter.

9:24 am

we are doing training right now for our new data system. ditching MyBackpack and siginig on to Veracross

9:24 am

So mindnumbingly boring

9:25 am

all they would give us is a "letter of presumed opportunity"

9:25 am

some of my colleagues are a bit.....technologically challenged.

9:25 am

Hiya all...this is a very nippy wee grid!!

9:26 am

i signed up for an online training about google classroom, fine course, but the company has sent me four emails a day since.

9:26 am

hello flask!

9:27 am

we just got GC two years ago, and now we're moving to this new thing. very frustrating

9:27 am

i wish they would just pick one and sit down

9:27 am

no system does everything

9:27 am

yup

9:28 am

I'll go back to paper and pen if they'd let me :)

9:29 am

good god. this teacher is in the middle of asking very long winded questions and muted herself in the middle

9:31 am

lololol

9:31 am

are you sure the host didn't do it?

9:31 am

hah

9:32 am

I don't have a remote control for my ceiling fans. just a pull chain.

9:32 am

allllmost to nbt

9:32 am

you have to be careful about rolling your eyes with zoom meetings - everybody can see you do it.

9:33 am

go trif go!

9:33 am

I'm making no progress on my last 10 words.

9:33 am

i recommend getting a blow up photo of yourself, and propping it in front of the camera

9:33 am

53 left but I keep slipping over to my work computer

9:34 am

found my last 6!

9:34 am

or just have your name show. you don't have to join in video. I nevver do for work

9:34 am

4 4s and 5 5s left :)

9:35 am

in fact I keep electric tape over my camera unless I am specifically using it.

9:35 am

go harry go!

9:35 am

I always assume the ppl who don't show video aren't actually there

9:35 am

or maybe they are just not liking the idea of their boss looking in their private space

9:36 am

see, I think the same thing - no video, not really there, or in bed or something.

9:36 am

that's the reason we can't force students to show video.

9:36 am

but they use it so they can just disappear. when I call on them they're not there

9:37 am

i didn't have the video on once because I was at trader joes.

9:37 am

well that hurts their participation grade, no?

9:38 am

I suppose jmc - we're supposed to be very "flexible" with grading this quarter

9:39 am

well it has to be a difficult way for most people to learn. I do trainings and I find other's participation in a zoom training spotty at best--and they are there by choice

9:39 am

why Harry -- did covid fry their brains? Or is just that the school system doesn't want the fact that nobody did their homework to become evident?

9:40 am

one of the TEACHERS drove me round the bend with her stupid zoom class meetings. EVERY class had to feature comedy routines by her four year old, and her showing the class her latest art projects. I about spit out my teeth laughing one day, when I student blurted out "wow, you need a lot of validation, don't you?"

9:42 am

the motivated students who were doing well before covid did fine with zoom. The ones who were having trouble before basically sunk.

9:42 am

If they have trouble self-motivating and organizing, this distance learning was terrible for them.

9:42 am

agreed harry. So many kids have real challenges, and making learning happen online wasn't great

9:42 am

I for one feel very disconnected in a virtual meeting. It is incredibly hard for me to connect with my audience which is a large part of the process.

9:43 am

not to mention below-grade readers - those poor kiddos didn't have a chance

9:43 am

it's not easy for the teachers either. very hard to read the class

9:43 am

even in the classroom though it is tough to motivate someone who doesn't want to learn

9:43 am

tough all around.

9:43 am

I am sure that is true harry

9:43 am

I have ways to get kids excited in a room. I can't do it so much on a computer

9:44 am

it was absolutely impossible to get a real discussion going - the kind where everyone is in, and participating, and chewing through a text. boy I missed that

9:44 am

amen harry, AMEN

9:44 am

maybe I should bring my cat in to do comedy routines

9:44 am

you'd be surprised cyber. My mother oftened turned students around where others had failed. But she did that with one on one interaction.

9:44 am

not all of my kids liked school, but they also knew that they either got an education and worked or they would starve -- Mom and Dad had no intention of supporting them for the rest of their lives.

9:44 am

yeah, the kid wasnt that cute, harry. it got annoying FAST

9:45 am

she not only taught the advanced classes but the not so advance students would rush to sign up for her.

9:45 am

OK gotta g shopping before our NEXT faculty mtng.

9:45 am

bbs

9:45 am

sometimes all it takes is for them to realize that there is someone who cares whether or not they succeed.

9:45 am

good luck harry! mask up, glove up!

9:46 am

bye harry

9:46 am

cyber that is a very important element

9:47 am

in what world is "chai" not a word?

9:47 am

yes - masks and gloves all round -- can't believe how things are going south in the states --- there were 10x more new cases in Florida yesterday than in all of Canada

9:48 am

reverse the vowels

9:48 am

but at my 50th High School reunion I talked to one student that she helped. She figured out he had a learning disability (only this was right when they started thinking about such things) so she arranged for the whole class to get tested so he wouldn't be embarrassed.

9:49 am

people are quick to blame the protests, but I dont think that tells the whole story. I think places are opening up too fast. we have no cure, no vaccine.

9:50 am

The protests I go to are at safe distances and with masks. :)

9:50 am

most of the people getting sick now date from Memorial Day weekend.

9:51 am

I wonder how many will return from Trump's rally and spread the disease around their area -- hopefully they will self-isolate for 2 weeks, but doubtful.

9:54 am

pulease they wont wear a mask they wont self isolate

9:58 am

the protests I attended were the same, jmc, but they were much smaller affairs, in towns, not cities

9:59 am

nbt!

9:59 am

whew!

9:59 am

mine were in washington dc but others here were not as careful

10:00 am

going to the weekly interfaith vigil tonight

10:00 am

id settle for leaving this room.

10:01 am

but I will be with you in prayer, jmc

10:01 am

Nan, you do realize that the population of Canada is 37.59 million and the population of the US is 328.2 million. Of course the US is going to have more cases than Canada.

10:02 am

Molly -- I was comapring Florida with all of Canada - not the entire USA

10:02 am

And statistics from Florida are skewed due to the high number of elderly who live there

10:03 am

well Floridians are being extremely stupid right now

10:04 am

here is an excellent site to use:

10:04 am

https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus

10:04 am

be sure to click on the "number of tests" data to compare

10:05 am

How are people in Florida being stupid Ru? I don't keep up with the news much.

10:06 am

literally thousands of people crowded on beaches next to each other at least in the photos I've seen in the news

10:06 am

if you look at the data, it shows that US cases spiked way up between Feb 1 - Mar 1, and have stayed sky high since then.

10:06 am

most without masks and distancing

10:07 am

Florida does not report all cases. They fire individuals who are keep stats because they won't skew the data.

10:07 am

That doesn't make a difference if people are being careful Molly. I live in the OKanagan VAlley which is also heavily populated with seniors (people come here to retire) and the only new case we have had in the last 3 weeks was someone who had been working in Alberta. Our entire health care zone covers the entire southern half of our province other than the southwest coastal region and we have only had that one new case in the entire region.

10:07 am

There are a lot of people who don't take this COVID thing seriously

10:07 am

here in California Masks are required for everywhere just about

10:07 am

sadly they are hurting other people with their attitude

10:08 am

the difference is 100% leadership - or, in our case, lack of it.

10:09 am

I've basically been home since March 13th.. i'm not out there much at all.. fortunately i like my house and view.

10:09 am

That is true, Trif -- we have been very fortunate here in BC in that regard.

10:09 am

Check out news on the small town of La Grand, Oregon. One small Pentacostal church is responsible for over 200 new cases.

10:09 am

so I started reading this book last night. It turned out to be about an american couple on their honeymoon and with a Jewish friend arriving in Vienna on Krystalnight. Well written but probably bad timing for me to read this book.

10:09 am

Oh that

10:10 am

Just to point out that AFAIK there are so far no risk factors that change how likely you are to catch the virus. Only how likely you are to be very ill from it. So a place having an elderly population doesn’t make it more likely to have more cases (though the way retirement homes are set up makes it easier for it to spread, but that’s a bit different)

10:10 am

That is too bad. I think Maryland's governor is doing a great job.

10:10 am

The only area in the states that is doing really well is the northeast -- the states that got together with NY to fight it.

10:12 am

I think he is too Molls. We will see how this summer plays out

10:13 am

But I spend a lot of time telling my aged friends in Texas that just because the governor says everything is hunky-dory doesn't mean you should go out.

10:14 am

I think this whole experience is going to condition people to stay cooped up and alone, even when there is a vaccine.

10:14 am

lol, jmc -- I'm trying to tell that to my 50 yr. old son -- but he doesn't listen either

10:14 am

Because you know how vaccines go. Half the people who get the vaccine end up getting what the vaccine is supposed to prevent.

10:15 am

At least in AZ, there is a very strong correlation between age and death rate from covid. 65+ has 75% of deaths, but only 14% of total cases.

10:15 am

ummm, that’s not how vaccines work

10:16 am

He wants to come and visit next week -- I just said he was welcome as long as he wasn't eating out in restaurants and was practicing self-distancing and wearing a mask in public, otherwise we would visit on the patio and I would put him up in a hotel.

10:18 am

i wish you much luck with that, cybernan, and hope your son respects your wishes

10:19 am

oh, he will, Trif

10:19 am

actually the polio vaccine worked very well. So did the mumps vaccine. The small pox vaccine. . . .

10:20 am

The kids do understand that at our age we have to be really careful until we can get a vaccine.

10:20 am

my boy is terrified for me! I keep telling him to chill.

10:20 am

quick babble etiquette question - is it always the done thing to announce when one is departing? what if I need to step away for about 30 minutes? it is okay to just disappear and reappear, yes?

10:21 am

I hope it is okay to go in and out trif since I am working and don't always know when I am leaving for a while

10:21 am

yeah Trif - not to worry -- I usually just say hi again when I've been away, unless I am going to leave in the middle of a conversation -- don't know what others do

10:21 am

but if I know I will be gone for a while I usually mention it with a bbl

10:22 am

1:45 pm

Just for you :)

1:46 pm

Nicky, there is also na 5/14 that I just found.

1:46 pm

Ot it

1:46 pm

Well we’ve had sea fog for the last week. Ugh. But the moray firth coast today was much nicer and sunny

1:47 pm

That sounds familiar... the county I teach in often has that low, cold fold in the morning even when it's lovely here at home.

1:48 pm

And it’s a babblet - called haar here at least

1:48 pm

Not sure what it's called in the states, or in the local language -- most of us just call it fog and wipe our windshields a lot. ;-)

1:49 pm

2:28 pm

Afternoon everyone. Love a small grid.

2:31 pm

Hello, Christa. I prefer the large grids myself.

2:31 pm

hello zoozzoom

2:39 pm

Hi stiddy!!! hi all

2:39 pm

back to finish 18 left

3:23 pm

back for my last 3

3:24 pm

1 to go

3:25 pm

fw

just clicked on the ze6 def and am shocked by the first one

3:45 pm

Because a familiar word can be spelled so differently?

yes

like not even close. maybe I've been pronouncing the more common spelling wrong my whole life

3:57 pm

I think it's usually the way it looks - but it wasn't originally.

3:58 pm

usually *pronounced*

3:58 pm

and *maybe* it wasn't originally

3:59 pm

But I admit, the other spelling is surprising.

4:00 pm

Anyway, I've finished my last few, so I'd best be off. Have a good day!

well done, you too

seem to be stuck here with 21 left

4:07 pm

Can I help Carla? I’ve just finished. What’s seldom is wonderful.

oh thank you, but I just went to the list.positive at least one I had already entered

4:10 pm

Ah yes!!! The old ‘I’m sure I entered that before’ syndrome. Happens me all the time. 🙃

:D

can't believe I miss the flatbread

missed

4:17 pm

fireworks!

well done!

2 S6 left

4:21 pm

There are 2 odd sa 6,

one was st, just looked it up, new to me

4:22 pm

There are two odd sa sixes. Get your monkeys working Carla

one sa6 is not odd at all, but the other one I just looked up. also new to me and not even sure I understand the definition. LOL

4:23 pm

My mistake. One odd sa 6 & one odd st 6

4:24 pm

Still got 1sa6 and the st6 to get. Could I have a clue. I’ve got the sa6 that builds from sa4

sa6 is the sa4 ahead of it + informal hello

4:25 pm

Thanks

st6 is an incense spice used by ancient hebrews. not sure why we would have trouble with that ;)

4:25 pm

St 6/24. St, perform on a stage & common vowel

whew, thanks, soodle. was trying to figure out how on earth to clue that

4:26 pm

Oops. That was st 6/21

4:28 pm

Thanks Soodle. I struggle with Jewish words as they’re really not common in England

4:30 pm

Sometimes I get so carried away on the euphoria of fireworks, I gallantly volunteer to clue, then struggle to give a clue that makes ant sense whatsoever. I’m always relieved shen

4:30 pm

When Babblers actually understand my clumsy clues.

I know what you mean.

4:39 pm

I need the odd sa6 please!

4:52 pm

sa6/33 is the opposite of danger. I don't know if there is another sa6

4:53 pm

there is, it's the stuff at the beach + casual greeting

4:57 pm

Thanks Hursh!

5:01 pm

Hey Hursh. Hey Champ. Hey Dan. Nice to 'see ' old friends here. 🤗

5:04 pm

Hi Grandma Soodle! How's the wee one? I know...probably not so wee...

5:05 pm

hiya Soodle and thanks hurshy

5:09 pm

He turned one at the end of May, Champ, & because of this wretched virus, I missed his first birthday. Damn you Corona Virus! But, please God, there will be many more birthdays. Hope all the Champ/2Bits/Hurshys are all safe & well?

5:10 pm

we are. miss2bit is TEN, and had to have a distanced birthday, though she did get to see some cousins from a safe distance in the yard

5:11 pm

I have many grandparent friends who've also been screwed out of special moments. Totally get it.

5:13 pm

cantus

5:14 pm

GAHHHH! *clearly can't chat and babble*

5:14 pm

oops

i'm sure someone will be glad for that clue

5:21 pm

Thanks champ.

5:26 pm

YW.

5:27 pm

I'm glad. Only 90 words and it could be Mt. Everest! Thanks Champ.

5:27 pm

I'm just annoyed with myself for the na5/12. I was all around that babblet and couldn't bring it to mind. GAH!!!

5:28 pm

Anyone need my feeble attempt at a clue for anything?

5:33 pm

You give great clues Champ. Your clue for ca6 was stellar. *That was a joke*

6:16 pm

finito! ch5, everyone. thanks hurshy and all cluers

6:30 pm

Congrats!

6:42 pm

Enjoying a G&T with a splash of cranberry juice. So refreshing :D

6:44 pm

Sounds tasty!!

6:47 pm

A cosmotonic????

6:48 pm

No triple sec - and just a splash of cranberry juice

6:49 pm

My mother went through a cosmopolitan phase. Blech.

6:50 pm

Never liked vodka drinks

6:51 pm

I'm not the biggest vodka fan (except grayhounds, I do like those)

6:52 pm

*greyhound rather

6:53 pm

I prefer brown liquor

6:54 pm

Big scotch fan I am :D I just have gin right now.

6:55 pm

Hi me too. I love scotch

6:58 pm

I went to the store for the first time in 3 months today. There were quite a few customers not wearing masks despite the gov's orders. I would have picked up some scotch, but the booze aisle was packed with maskless shoppers.

6:59 pm

Unbelievable

6:59 pm

Ru, Cynthia came over Wednesday and we had a distanced back yard visit. First friend I have seen since the end of February.

7:00 pm

Oh great

7:01 pm

I am too soon. In July. Meeting up with my cousins

7:01 pm

Nice!

7:03 pm

The hotel ai am staying at is giving me a big upgrade for free

7:04 pm

I'm sure they're trying to get as many customers as they can.

7:04 pm

Big upgrades are great.

7:05 pm

I would so love to get the heck out of Dodge. Being stuck at home by myself is really starting to get to me.

7:06 pm

We were talking about old comic strips at work today. Does anyone remember Prince Valiant?

7:07 pm

I do

7:07 pm

I remember Prince Valiant.

7:07 pm

Do you remember playing with Silly Putty and the comics?

7:08 pm

Ooo, I loved to copy the comics with Silly Putty.

7:08 pm

I get reminded of Prince Valiant here sometimes

7:10 pm

It was so fun stretching the copies out.

7:10 pm

He was definitely valiant, with that special hair cut.

7:10 pm

For sure

7:11 pm

Ru, I love the new icon. We will, we will, infect you!

7:12 pm

:D

7:13 pm

I have a neighbor who is a county police officer. They have a new radio joke. DWM...driving with mask. : D

7:14 pm

Still hot here. I am sitting outside

7:15 pm

Going to swim And make dinner soon

7:15 pm

I wonder with everyone wearing masks these days if ne'er-do-wells have things easier.

7:16 pm

Enjoy your swim, ru.

7:16 pm

Starting to rain again.

7:17 pm

See u tomorrow

7:18 pm

Night ruru

7:20 pm

If I still went to banks, I would feel weird walking into a bank with a mask on.

7:21 pm

That's what I was thinking. I have to go to the bank sometime soon to deposit a check that is too big to deposit online. It's not that big :D

7:22 pm

Ooo, I want a check that is too big to deposit digitally.

7:25 pm

It's only $1200. My mortgage was sold recently and the new lender messed up the excrow account. I knew they would figure it out at some point.

7:25 pm

Luddite here. Haven’t figured out how to deposit check not in person.

7:30 pm

One of the joys of my life was when I figured out how to deposit a check with my cell phohe.

7:30 pm

*Phone

7:30 pm

My bank has an app that you can load onto a tablet (maybe even a desktop or laptop) and make deposits from the app. I can't do it on my cell phone. That's where my Luddite tendencies are at their finest.

7:33 pm

My bank, upload the application, take a picture of the check, fill out the deposit information, done.

7:41 pm

Got ‘em all, first time ever! Almost hurt my shoulder patting myself on the back. 🥳

7:41 pm

Congratulations, Joy.

7:54 pm

I just checked and my bank has upped the limit on what you can deposit via mobile banking (I haven't actually deposited a check in ages) and I was able to do it on my i-pad. Yay!

8:41 pm

Hello to my fellow babblers! How's everyone doing today?

8:41 pm

By the way, congratulations to all the finishers!Way to go

8:51 pm

Hi Min! I am stuck at 9 and popping in now and then to try to find them. How are you doing, today?

8:53 pm

Hello origami. I am stuck at 1, but no rush to find. I can help clue if you need any clues. Was a tough grid today.

8:54 pm

I have listed and mostly what I need are 4's that I can't find, even with the list. Sigh.

8:55 pm

I like your icon, by the way. Living alone during this pandemic, there is nobody I can kiss. So I send you a virtual kiss :D

9:02 pm

I live alone too, so right back at cha!

9:03 pm

I can kiss my doggy though, which I do everyday anyway.

9:06 pm

Oh, yes. My dogs are definitely getting all the attention they want these days (and probably more :D ).

9:08 pm

I think my dog is sick of me. Just me and him every day.

9:14 pm

Both of my dogs have started to cram themselves down at the foot of the bed at night (175 lb of dog total) to escape my attention in the night. I guess there is only so much they can take :D

9:24 pm

What kind of dogs do U have? Have Cavalier King Charles

9:27 pm

I have a black-and-tan coonhound and a mutt that is mostly Brittany. I am going to downsize when they go (and they are both very elderly). I hope that doesn't sound heartless, but I always need a dog.

9:27 pm

I have a friend who bread Cavalier's. They are wonderful dogs.

9:28 pm

*bred rather, blushing about that one

9:31 pm

U should downsize to a Cavalier King Charles then. I like to have a dog that is portable. Cavaliers are great dogs!

9:33 pm

Yes, I need a dog I can pick up and put in the SUV. I can't pick up either of them and they are so old they won't jump up into it. Makes taking them to the vet (which these days happens frequently) quite a challenge. I was actually thinking about a beagle. But, then, they are snooty. Schultz nailed the breed with Snoopy :D

9:39 pm

I will probably wind up getting a mutt from the pound or a pet rescue. I just don't want to get a dog that has a lot of behavioral baggage.

9:48 pm

My Cavalier is my first dog as an adult. I would not even consider getting another breed. I have seen websites for rescue Cavaliers. That is probably what I will do next.

9:48 pm

hi all. need clues for the other Z words. have the greek leter.

9:49 pm

How old are your dogs? My dog is twelve years old which is old for a Cavalier. Many do not live for 10 or 12 years.

9:49 pm

9:55 pm

Well, I am going to go water my meager garden. It's still 95 here at almost 8:00. Ugh. Happy babbling.
