There are a lot of not real words in Babble...

Clues are up

12:23 am

ca7

12:23 am

None of the words in the Babble dictionary are not real words,. They once were, even in the mispellings, because language changes over time. However, the dictionary hasn't caught up with more modern times and so doesn't accept things like email, spam etc.

12:25 am

The Enable dictionary was created specifically as a list of words for words games, and was not well checked. I'm certain that some of the words are proper nouns, and some seem likely to be typos of some sort.

12:26 am

I stand corrected :)

12:26 am

Even printed dictionaries have been known to contain non-words (at least one - "dord").

12:26 am

Actually I'm sitting.

12:29 am

makes me wonder how long the slang short term for tr**onometry has been around - doesn't seem like a "real" word to me.

12:30 am

About as long as there have been classes in it, I would guess. Students love abbreviations.

12:30 am

da7

12:32 am

and also, I've noticed "'evite" is acceptable - how so, if email isn't?

12:33 am

It's a verb, meaning to avoid or shun.

cu7

12:34 am

must be, I've never seen it in all my years of reading.

12:34 am

must be archaic, I mean.

12:40 am

They're telling me that 'cringy' isn't a word, like they're just expecting me to forget all of my teenage years.

Fireworks! *~*~*~* Can't believe tha my last word found was co4.5 - metal money. Must be due to that 2020 fact of not having been allowed to use or touch that for so long now.

12:46 am

well, congrats and g'nite to you both! :)

1:04 am

oh, really? now that bit of slang is also a word? I give up, haha... (and here I was still looking for co + behaved to make an 8. finally figured out it's really a 7)

1:07 am

haha me too rbud - finally found the co8 which is also slang i think

1:08 am

oh haha I see you just said it

1:16 am

yep - but that was before I knew what it was, at least. :D

1:21 am

as9 is definitely not one likely to be monkeyed - I had to cheat and check lickety, couldn't stand it any longer, haha. Never heard of it.

1:22 am

me too - then had to find it on more words - took me a good while :)

1:43 am

FW - not an easy grid for me

1:49 am

co8! ;p

1:49 am

I've stalled and become distracted at 100 for now.

3:07 am

Good morning everyone. May I please have stats for the O in the fourth row, fourth column?

4:44 am

6:45 am

Name our Babble Pirate Queen in todays grid

7:18 am

Oh dear. *Prepares for complaints about the c word*

7:46 am

I think they would be complaining about how hard the C words are today.

I'd sooner complain about that. When it comes to 'dirty words' in the grid, I really don't care. When the word is out of context, just part of a word list of words that (mostly) exist, it is, to me, stripped of its offensive meaning. Words are only offensive because society says they are (and so they're used that way) - if the cu4 were expunged from dictionaries and from our memories, some other word would arise (or change its meaning) to take its place.

Me, I'm still looking for the co8

7:50 am

Wehn you get that co8, matty, we will tell you co8.

7:50 am

apparently co8 can not be singular

7:50 am

morning all!

8:03 am

Very good points Matty.

8:04 am

There is some very misleading chat earlier which looks like the co8 is co + behaved. It is not.

8:04 am

Anita must be exercising : D

8:05 am

lol molly sorry wrong box!

And thanks for the co8 - got it now!

8:16 am

This grid has some twisty ass words in it. My eyeballs are sore. : D

My other word that should not be deleted from all language, but from the daily grid. Imagine that there is a women who plays who was a victim of domestic violence and was called a ***. So far, I am for taking out the n word and the j word, and a few others, out of respect for game players.

8:30 am

Here is how much COVID sucks. The Rockettes have cancelled their Christmas Spectacular for the first time in 87 years. : (

what happened 87 years ago. Ah, yes- 1933.

8:33 am

Nothing happened. They have never cancelled in 87 years. The first show was in 1933.

8:36 am

The Rose Parade is also cancelled. Happy New Year from COVID.

Ah. Your statement was ambiguous. For the first time in its 87 year history. The Ziegfeld girls and the Flora Dora girls predated the Rockets? I have to brush up.

8:37 am

And no traditional Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. It will "be replaced by a virtual event". Happy Thanksgiving from COVID.

10:25 am

10:39 am

I can ou6 everyone. stayed up almost all night reading and crying last night.

10:41 am

Only have 3 7's here, but not finished first run yet

11:04 am

btw, the book I stayed up reading way too late was set in NZ

11:05 am

oh cool

11:05 am

makes me want to visit now

11:05 am

me too

11:05 am

but you'd have to stay in quarantine there in a hotel for 14 days

11:05 am

still far away though and then there's that

11:08 am

mr. homie watches this couple on YT that travel the world in their sailboat, and they had been visiting CO when everything went down. They were stuck in Fiji while their sailboat was on another island. Or maybe it was on Fiji. Anyhoo, they just got back to it and had to do a 3 week quarantine. 2wks in one place and 1 in another.

11:08 am

Tx for as9!!

11:08 am

yeah, that sounds like lots of fun

11:09 am

everyone keeps saying that - I must've missed that clue

11:09 am

me too, though that's the first time I've seen it mentioned :)

11:09 am

50 to go

11:10 am

is it related to stuff you wipe on your face for ac4?

11:10 am

YT = You Tube. That one took me a while.

11:10 am

sorry. I knew moo would know it. :D

11:10 am

yeah, courtesy of my 9 year old

11:11 am

I read some reviews of the book you mentioned Carla. I'm not sure I would like it. It sounds a little soap opera-ish to me.

11:12 am

I still think cringy is a word

11:12 am

funny, was just typing that

11:13 am

interesting, Molly. I didn't really think that. but I did watch 4 soap operas when I was a kid, so... I actually usually read mysteries so it was a departure, but I loved it.

11:13 am

Molly, also check out Sorry I Missed You. I think I mentioned that the other day.

11:15 am

I just destroyed those i's! :D

11:15 am

oh yeah, had those ones :) 36 to go

11:15 am

45 left here

11:19 am

are all the upper o ou?

11:27 am

No

11:28 am

ah, just saw the last one, thx

11:28 am

not the way I'd spell that word so I usually miss it

11:28 am

now just need 1 A to finish off the 5th col

11:31 am

bouncing between calls here

11:31 am

It's so thrilling. We get every little nuance of Carla's journey through the grid.

11:31 am

well, I was hoping someone would offer my missing A, but bea isn't here

11:32 am

which a?

11:32 am

last col

11:32 am

still missing one there...but assume you have the solvent, how about adjective for long long time?

11:33 am

yep

11:33 am

How about ac7/36 - incorporate an island.

11:34 am

that must be it, looking now

11:38 am

well, I'm sure it'll come to me eventually, thx

11:39 am

n's (k)nocked out! (I'm not on it today)

11:42 am

well my missing k is not karen...

11:50 am

fairly stuck at 34 left. still 5 4's and all the big ones. guess I will take a break.

12:47 pm

rehi

12:47 pm

just did something I've never done before - gave myself a haircut. really just a trim.

12:50 pm

I've considered it, but chickened out

12:50 pm

my wife is better at the detail things :)

12:51 pm

I gave mr. homie one last week but just used clippers so that was easy. I used to cut the boys' hair with scissors with they were younger after they both got horrible cuts at a kid's salon.

12:53 pm

still not seeing any new words after my break.

12:55 pm

well there's a poorly spelled 4

12:56 pm

33 left!

1:01 pm

25 left

this may be all I've got today.

that middle c is my biggest problem

1:02 pm

i have 92 left, and only 3 from that C so far.

I have only found 6 there

1:03 pm

i'm up to 5. this grid is challenging. :)

yep

phantom coconut

think I'm going to have to go to the list

1:18 pm

i have that same phantom, and yeah, today will likely be a list day, agreed.

so far not helping much. still need 3 + 2 C's and 2 + 1 A

and a D

and an e ;)

and several others. 14 left after the list! going to do other things...TTFN

1:26 pm

be well :)

1:30 pm

1:31 pm

2:58 pm

Oh my. It’s Zooz. How delightful to see you. 🤗. And hello other Babble friends. 😀

2:58 pm

Hello, Soodle! How are you keeping?

hello, soodle, zooz, bichon

2:59 pm

hi Soodle, hi all

peri

3:00 pm

Hi.

3:00 pm

I’m good, Zooz. Hope you and the olds are too? Hi Peri, Carla, Bich. Nice to see ‘old friends’ on board. 😀

3:01 pm

We are all plodding along, Soodle 😎

3:04 pm

Good to hear that Zooz. Having elderly parents in the midst of a pandemic must be very difficult. My best wishes going your way, old friend!

I can vouch for that. very stressful.

3:05 pm

ar5/10 pls

we have it often peri, it was in yesterday's too

3:06 pm

really? ok

3:06 pm

thought I had typed that one, ty

a + a 4 letter babblet

3:07 pm

not liking this grid but will plod along.

3:07 pm

C words are the bane of my existence

it's not a good one

same

3:11 pm

Carla - I feel your pain. My Mam died June last year. I don’t think she would have coped well with Covid. Meanwhile - Puppy Max had chewed my TV remote, multiple shoes/sandals & was having a good old gnaw on my handbag till I stopped him.

yeah, my MIL died last fall and my SIL keeps saying how glad she wasn't here for the pandemic. My dad died at end of Aug this year and it was a pain trying to get care and then no funeral.

and then just trying to keep them from catching it

3:16 pm

still 25 to go

not making much progress, moo :D

3:16 pm

been on call after call

3:16 pm

me is a busy little camper

I have 5 left but have looked up 3 or 4

do you have the 8 moo? don't want to spoil the stats for you but if you already have I was wondering if it is an everyday word.

or the 9

3:18 pm

I do not yet

3:18 pm

six 7s, the 8 and 9 all still to go

3:18 pm

and 9 sixes for good measure

ok

3:19 pm

ar 7/44, pls

3:20 pm

don't have yet either, bichon

3:20 pm

one of my 7 missing 7s :)

3:20 pm

my lucky day!

wow, looked up the 8. turns out it is regular but was unexpected for me at least.

3:21 pm

is it a gerun?

3:21 pm

d?

nope

3:22 pm

too bad

it is an abbreviation

3:23 pm

well, found a 6

3:23 pm

isn't a darcy some unit of velocity for ground water?

3:23 pm

ooh, another 6

3:24 pm

found a composite 7 yay

3:25 pm

woot

well, the ar7, bichon is a noun form of an adj. in the grid. I had tried that several times with another last letter

3:25 pm

looked up at the wrong time...thx

sorry :D. and bichon probably left and will ask again in a little while.

3:26 pm

not your fault, I could turn off chat :)

3:26 pm

the risks I take :)

3:27 pm

21 to go

3:28 pm

if you won the gold in olympic sculls, wouldn't you outca*** your opposition?

well, out words are like re words

3:28 pm

my last two words have been 4s :/

3:30 pm

well, that's the 4s done...19 to go

looked up the 9. I can safely say it is a word I have never seen before.

3:30 pm

For the record..... I was awake ridiculously early this morning. I logged into Babble, and was the first poster after the flip, with co 8/55. Just saying.....

3:31 pm

nice soods

3:31 pm

ty for the 8. got it

3:31 pm

3:32 pm

indeed, I didn't find it unassisted

3:32 pm

To be filed under ‘What’s seldom is wonderful’ .... Thank you Hokie. 😊😊😊

3:33 pm

raygon - like the actor president

3:33 pm

did you know Ronald Wilson Raegan rearranged spells Insane Anglo Warlord ?

3:34 pm

or an alien with an accent might use

lol, nope

3:34 pm

Spiro Agnew = Grow A Penis

3:34 pm

generic

bye, HH

3:45 pm

yeah

3:45 pm

Although I just got a bunch of foreign currency for my daughter on her birthday, and actually discovered the meanings of a few words as a result :)

3:46 pm

Nothing like trying to type cyrillic into google to understand which former soviet republic's currency you have

3:46 pm

btw, it's relatively easy to do it on an iphone

I have some foreign currency, but just from my travels so nothing exotic that I've never heard of

3:47 pm

yeah we had the usual canadian, australian, nz, euro currency, as well as a bunch of trinidadian dollars

3:47 pm

my dad lived in Trinidad for a few years, so went to visit

I just have canadian, mexican, and a few caribbean countries

3:48 pm

I've been just over the border in Mexico, but think I just used US currency

yeah, I went to Cozumel once and Cancun from a cruise and I don't think we had to exchange money, but that's been a while. I think I just ended up with some somehow.

and canadian quarters and pennies always end up in circulation here somehow.

mr. homie brought me some from Costa Rica.

3:53 pm

I've been to Canada a few times...Nova Scotia, Montreal and southern Ontario as well, kept some of the money on the last trip

3:54 pm
