I think that is true, hurshy. But you have to remeber other things come into it -- not just personal income tax. There is the higher sales taxes, our doctors have a cap on their annual income, we pay $6 per us gal. for gas, and about 50% tax on booze....
well our sales taxes are all state-based, the federal gov't doesn't collect anything from those, i think
and frankly, gas should cost more, so that people will demand affordable non-gas transportation options and we shift away from fossil fuels
we have provincial sales tax (ecept in Alberta) and federal goods and services tax (5%)

The U.S health system will remain a for-profit, insurance driven entity simply because of the mindset of those who rabidly endorse healthcare for only those who can afford it. The complaint I hear most is: "Why should I have to pay for his/her healthcare with MY taxes?" when it comes to universal healthcare, and it possible implementation.

there are always problems. sometimes people can't get very expensive cutting edge treatments. but then, for every one of those, hundreds get preventative care. it's always a trade off. in the US, rather than decide that some care can't be had, we decide that many just can't have care at all.

I used to live in Mexico where there is a huge industry of providing cosmetic surgery to Americans. It's cheaper to fly to Mexico and live there for a few weeks than it is to get the surgery in the U.S. Most of that is unnecessary (IMO) stuff, like face lifts, but some is stuff like dental implants that people genuinely need.

It mostly is Molly. When I travel I hear from Canadians that they appreciate their health system. But actually my husband traveled to Mexico for major dental work.
And there are lots of stories about long waits and sub standard doctors in the U.S. Those just aren't reported.
My late husband was Canadian so a lot of what I heard, I heard from him.
there are long waits for surgeries that are not life threatening. If you have the money and want immedieate surgery for other things, you can pay a premium and get them. Take my eye surgery for example. I paid to have mine done at a private clinic because I wanted the top of the line lens and a surgery date about 6 months in advance of what I would have had otherwise.
My landlord in Mexico was a dentist whose business is doing dental implants for about $1000 for Americans. He speaks perfect English. Just in case anyone has a need. Implants in the U.S. cost about $5000 or more.
I'm sure he was wrong and everything to do with Canada's health care system is just the best.
Molly, yes, there are indeed wait times for non-urgent or elective surgeries, but when things are dire, you wait for nothing. We operate on a triage system.
It's not only Canada but also Australia, The Netherlands and developed country except the USA. I think we rank 60.

You're setting up a false dichotomy, Molly. Neither system is perfect, and neither system is without problems. Each systems has some pros and some cons. What people are saying is that overall with universal health care the system is cheaper, and more able to treat everyone, than a for-profit system.

in the meantime, we had been testing our home for radon exposure with the result that we had to have mitigation done. That was completed on Tuesday and our one day reading has dropped from the 280-360 range to 21, so that is great
