the city on the italian riviera is Genoa, which always weirds me out as a spelling because why did English decide it didn't need a V?

Never seen the Italian city spelled with a V. English changes a lot of foreign words. Italian words are not unique.

I mean, I know English changes the spelling of everything. All languages change the spelling of most place names. But GenoVa to Genoa is an odd elision, it's not like English took away the V in Geneva.
but then again, in Italian London is Londra so we have no leg to stand on
Sometimes it is as simple as the misspelling of a map maker that stuck. There is no sense to be made of it. Talk to all the Johannsens who became Johnsons at Ellis Island.

for genoa it's more likely that it came from the latin than a misspelling, where the English still used the "older" spelling that the Italians themselves had abandoned. It's just fascinating though.

because a lot of the time is doesn't follow the "rules" for transliterating between languages the way non-place names do
In Latin, it's Genua, and according to Wikipedia, that's what it was historically in English.
(Oops - been a while since that conversation)
So many examples of beautiful Gaelic place names bastardised by English in this part of the world. For example, there is a county in the extreme north west of this island called Donegal. (Pronounced Dunnygaul). The actual Irish name is Dún na nGall - Fort of the French. Irishplace names & how they came about is a hobby of mine.
Also - many Irish place names start with ‘Bally’ or ‘Ball’ The Irish word for town is ‘baile’,pronounced bollya. When this country was occupied, the British couldn’t get their heads/tongues around the Irish pronunciation of placenames, so they got distorted.
So ends todays history lesson.

Pronouncing Irish names can definitely be a problem for us non-Irish. Even some British names seem to be pretty strange.
I was touring in Germany years ago with a choir, and our hosts were telling us about their vacation in Hungary, but we were having trouble understanding. I don't remember how Hungary is said in German, but it was similar enough to the French that I suggested it.
It wasn't the only time that knowing French turned out to be helpful in Germany.
And more recently, the chorus I sing with now was working on a setting of a number of poems from World War I, including one in German that included a lot of French place names (including one that no longer exists). We had quite a lively discussion about pronunciation.
I am from Texas we mispronounce a lot of things, I took four years of french dont remember much but do know it was hard for me to pronouce somethings with a Texas accent lol
