brakkeflower, letter count is the amount of words that have this certain number of letters. 1st letter count is, for example "silt" 1st letter is s, and there are 4 letters. But there are (I'm making this up) 4 letters that start with the letter "s". I hope I made sense.

Yes. Most time it is a waste of nadwidth, but sometimes it can be quite tantalising to get the one word with a Z in it . Or the U, or the Q, etc.
If I log out do I lose my list? Or do I have to leave the screen up all day?

There are 278 words, you go as long as you want or until you run out of time. I hate to run out of time typing the last word in, it makes me crazy.
I just googled "having a club foot" and found it that way..but I still don't know how you get there to begin with ... maybe I should go get my scrabble dictionary

Kingfisher - in case you think that we know all the words, think again! Lots of us rely heavily on clues from each other, plus a useful websit or two.
kingfisher- lol! It seems a bit daunting at first but once you are hooked and start to play regularly you start to recognise the odd words as well as the ones that are used in normal conversation. There are also tools we use and we help each other on the log with clues (and moral support!). Try www.a2zwordfinder.com for the *nonsense* words ;)

Some folks have programs that generate the stats... the Babble Pro's have grids that tell you how many words generate from each letter, and they'll add up manually and post them.
Shorty: usually someone posts the letter count really early in the day. try scrolling back to around the start of the chatlog.

why can't people do their own work without stats and hints. It takes the fun out of it if everyone finds them all. I found 74 words, but i found them myself, and i know what they all mean.

jdog - If you don't want stats, hints or tips you can hide the chat log.
the stats and hints help you find the words youve never heard of before -- and in babble there are tons of them. the general rule of the chat log is if you want help read it, if you dont want to see the hints, dont read it.
if you dont care about the chat or the hints, you have the option to hide the log
this is why there is a hide log command

Not so much a code - just shorthand. a/7/40 is a word starting with a, 7 letters, 40 points. the list at the beginning with all the statistics shows how many words of each length (4 through 8 in this puzzle), how many start with each letter, and how many times each letter exists in the final word list. Anything else?
example : wa 5/34 wa=initial letters of the word 5= amount of letters in the word 34= total points

I think for most people who can't "show all" you should be OK clicking "prev 50". Also, then once you are in the previous 50, the log doesn't auto-update anymore, so the screen is completely stable. It's a really great way to read through the log.

I haven't dared to load Firefox, which Anj had suggested a while ago, because I'm at work, and afraid to mess up the computers there. This site was mentioned on msnbc this morning. I imagine lots of people are checking it out.
jrs - try hiding the icons. From time to time the grid will become really slow - usually because of the large amount of words you have found. Without the firefox software you're better off just having a really fast broadband connection. If thats not an option, try switching off the log for a whle - the computer will slow up because it is refreshing the log every 2 mins or so.
baggo - I've already hidden the icons, but to have to miss out on the log as well ... boo-hoo-hoo-hoo, too disappointing! well, when needs must - thanks.

DanSnu - Paid-up ProBabblers (those of us with flags, 'handbags' and avatars) get a stats list about 10 mins into the new grid. It tells us the total of words to be found, how many of each letter, which we then add up manually. It doesn't however give us the final points (you find that out when you finish) or the second letters and individual word lengths or points. This is something we build as we do the grid.

Well, TigerDud, I can't really go through all 278 words at random and give you clues for them. Try looking at the 3--part 2nd letter word list I posted a while ago and see where that takes you. After that, when you can be more specific about which words you need clues for, I'll be happy to help if I'm still around. I'm sure other Babblers will help you out if I'm not.

captainjim50 - because that word is not in the grid. Change the 's' o a 'd' and then add an 's' for the plural.

Hello Jacula, Being a newbie but learning fast, I still have a question or two. I signed up for the Pro Statis, which certainly helped. Does Babble publish the list of words that they compiled so we can compare and discover the obscure words they may have listed? I've been unable to find same. Thanks for your help.
Jamie doesn't actually create the puzzles, Jacula. They're randomly generated from the exact tile set that ships with a standard Scrabble game, with the exceptions that there are no blanks and the Q is replaced with a lower-point-value Qu.
That's interesting. I'm never sure if I see more on the yellow tiles on screen or more from my own, hand-written grid. Mostly, as a writer of 48-years' of age, I get things down better on paper rather than computer, but sometimes, like this grid, it's more immediate and obvious in yellow! Not sure why that is, which is why I should have become a 'Cracker' (criminal psychologist). No insults intended to anyone by that last comment.
Jacula... yellow actually stimulates your brain and is easier on your eyes than white... maybe that's why you can "see" more words on the yellow tiles sometimes
Doogle - I realise that Jamie doesn't actually create the puzzles, or even solve 'em half of the time! (LOL.) But he can choose which size puzzle appears, should he so wish.

i did really well, after the first day or two, it was lots harder than i ever imagined. i still don't think that i have caught up either emotionally or sleep wise...the devastation was awful, and to see these people that all they have fits in a rubbermaid container was really hard..kinda makes me feel bad to be playin here.
