if anyone here from the UK is interested - the govt has a website where people can help choose new (and graphic) pics to add to cigarette packets to aim to reduce smoking. its interesting - http://www.packwarnings.nhs.uk/
Are there any statistics available to show that putting graphics on the packets does reduce smoking?
I'm not sure. I know the govt says it "helps", but I haven't seen any numbers. Some of the pics they are showing in that link *must* have an effect - if only to maybe stop people starting smoking. At least, I would hope so. Apparently the survey is based on one that's been used "successfully" in other countries
I just think its very good that they are canvassing normal people to help decide what would be effective, if anything
Haz, can you believe the backlash from that?? This week they reported that people are now buying covers for their packets so they don't see the graphics, and even stickers!!
I saw a bit on the news re that this morning Atalante, When I smoked and they put all the warnings on the packets it didn't stop me and I don't think pics would - prob cover them up. But it might put off youngsters from starting.
I think part of it is expected to be an "embarrassment factor" of having packets with those pics on. But making stickers of the exact shape adn size would be a good new business for someone!

The smokers are requesting the packs with the least graphic stuff on them and the kids just don't seem to care! I smoked (until my illness prevented me) and I honestly don't think the graphics would have stopped me either way... it is really a personal decision

Atalante - I've looked at the website and voted. Never having smoked I find it hard to understand why anyone would start. If some of those pictures could be of influence, then use them, but people do have selective vision!
I've never smoked either ... I really find the concept quite ick! But I do think some of those pics would make me think again if they were on the first pack of cigs I ever bought!
I think for many young people, dying is such a far-off concept that they put it out of their minds. But if their appearance was to be affected.....
And if anyone had to watch someone die from smoking, as I am right now, that would surely deter them, I would hope. I too smoke, but since watching my Mom slowly deteriorate, I have begun the process of stopping. Its a horrid disease, totally preventable.

my husband used to smoke and I refused to marry him until he gave up. that worked fairly quickly *grins*
My kids are being educated at school about the dangers of smoking and they tell me about their friend's parents who smoke... those kids are so little chance of change... and my kids ask me! "Why are they allowed to make something that hurts people... because it doesn't do anything else??? and I tell them, "you are our future, you need to educate your generation, cause they don't listen to us!"...
Thats wonderful mrp! Education is the best thing to stop kids from never starting. Keep the word out there, and hopefully we can save them. I too wonder why it's allowed to go on.
what's good though is that I think govts / health agencies are realising more now that smoking is an addiction, and have better programmes to help people stop, rather than just expected them to do so without aid. we wouldn't expect an alcoholic to stop on their own, or a heroin user etc etc
I think the problem comes in the teenage years. Children can be easily persuaded that smoking is a bad thing, but when they see their friends starting it takes courage to be different. And you're right, it is a huge addiction, Atalante and for many will power is not enough.

Exactly Atalante! Nicotine is sooo addictive, even in my Moms state, all she talks about is smoking, wanting us to allow her to have one. Its borders on pathetic, that even in her dying state, her addiction is still ruling her.

I have tried to encourage my kids not to follow the 'cool crowd' of smoking... they understand the danger, but will it really stop them from 'impressing' or 'becoming part of the crowd'... that is what I remember of my experience... what do we do???
I began smoking when I was 17-before the surgeon generals report. I felt, like most teenagers, very uncool, and smoking made me feel a bit more acceptable. By 20 I was smoking 2 and 1/2 packs a day. At the age of 30 I stopped. It was among the hardest things I have ever done in my life. And it was hard for years, not just the few weeks they say so blithely. But in a way I'm glad it was so hard, because it made it clear to me the level of addiction, and that I could never, ever smoke again. I don't know if anything would have stopped me at the age of 17, except for a peer culture in which it wasn't considered cool.
I think I was very lucky in a way when I was young - I had terribly bad bronchitis most of the time, and to smoke would have probably killed me. Good motive not to start!
I know mrp. I grew up hating my parents smoking, I detested it. I didn't start till I ran with a older, "cooler" crowd who smoked. All that I knew or thought, went out the window, I wanted to be a part of the cool crowd.
So basically we need to place all teenagers under house arrest.
so it needs to be unacceptable by any social standard (which is happening with most places being smoke free!) and also helps if health concerns are addressed early! otherwise, ground the bastards!
I too started at 17 Eva, and even now, watching my Mom, it is still so very hard to stop. But I am trying, and I WILL succeed. I pray I do.

Cat-just read back a bit. I am so sorry that you and your mom are suffering as you are. This is a beautiful and hard life, and we all struggle to go about it in the least destructive way....it's hard not to get involved with things (cigs, overeating, whatever)that offer some immediate relief. I think that for me anyway, accepting how hard it was to give the cigarettes up-not expecting it to be anything but hellish for a while, made it "easier", in that I knew what I was fighting, and could also feel appreciative of and compassionate towards myself in the struggle. If I can be of any support (26 years later and not one cigarette!) please let me know.
and take all and any help you can get :) I cant imagine how difficult it must be ... but from experiences of people I know, I know you'll be glad you did it!

My dad was my biggest influence in helping me... he had a heart condition and scared us to death! He stopped smoking They dad reminded me that the kids wouls smell it on me and would associate that with me.... well! I freaked out!! Cause I remember some of the best times with my dad and a cigarette hanging out of his mouth!! How is that for dangerous memories! I actually 'crave' those days and smile when I smell the fresh lit cigarette!! SO SAD!! We are humans with emotions and they are connected to our senses.... Save your family from those with a healthier memory.... Please!

don't be discouraged by friends who tell you it was easy for them to quit. Pretty much everyone I know who said that went back to smoking. Because they really hadn't faced the hold it had on them. So much of what we are taught in the US is that anything hard or uncomfortable is bad and undoable. I can still remember what it felt like to be out of cigarettes and craving,, and go into the store and buy a pack and light up. So hard to find other things in life that are so easily satisfied. That's why they call it an addiction(-: If it didn't feel good there wouldn't be a problem. There were many times in the first few years when I would think "well, x is going on and I just need a cig to get through it". But then I knew that if I could justify 1 I could justify 1,000.
