it is totally painless indeed, Fran! I started out by reading a sentence and then translating it. After a while I read a sentence and let them translate with my help. And now I read, and they raise a hand when they don't know a word, and then the other translates, or me, if neither knows. They learn so fast.

My friends son had to ring her whilst IN CLASS as the teacher had left the room and he was being bullied. Turns out he was punched so hard he had a bruise. But this kid had to use his phone to call his mum to call the school. It is disgusting. He got suspended for 2 days for swearing at a teacher (proofed as here say) These kids get nothing for hitting him
yeap... I know... the teachers here anyway...refuse to do anything about bullying...their attitude is "don't do it" and instead of being adults and actually intervening they are completely putting the responsibility of stopping it upon the kids... they require "prep time" and so therefore cannot be on the school yard to supervise except 5 mins before the bell ( mind lunch time is from 11:30 to 12:15 and the kids who eat at school are outside unsupervised from 11:50 to 12:10

i have some friends that are teachers. from the amount of work they do outside school hours on prep and marking and the constant increase in class sizes, they get a bit of a raw deal. then there is the issue of lawsuits. they walk on eggshells all the time because all it takes is an accusation of touching a student to put them on administrative leave. i'd say a good bit of the trouble lies within families where parenting is left to the tv and the general tone of the culture. life is getting meaner and it isn't all the teacher's fault.

OH Dear! I can't stay quiet on this subject. The school system has removed the parental rights and involvements. They've taken over teaching our kids more than their academics. Then they remove the teachers capabilities for any sort of discipline and control in the classroom. What do they expect.

honestly I think alot of the problems going on in ontario schools anyway are the teachers that are teaching now..were raised with no mandatory curriculumn of the late 70's early 80's. My son had a teacher that honestly could not string together a sentence without using "um" and like" before every other word

My daughter can't teach. During the course of her day, they have lock downs, weapon checks, etc. Lovely atmosphere.
Parents are not parenting. We had a case here, where the bus broke down, and the Jr high students became unruly, started a fight, the driver put them off the bus, and he/she got suspended.

Last year when school was closed due to a snow storm, my daughter had to try and locate 30 parents to let them know that their child was being dismissed at 11 am and could not be ion school grounds after 11:30. What are you supposed to do w/that?

i ride public transit every day and i am stuck with a busload of high school kids. the youth culture has change drastically. court dates and arrests are signs of social achievement. violence is glorified, planned and routine among both genders. it isn't just the teachers, it is a cultural problem and mandated curicula hasn't done a damn thing to fix it. in fact the harris innovation of hamstringing the teachers to the three 'r's has left whole segments of the school population out to twist in the wind. it works fine for the bulk of average kids but abandons the under and over achievers. ain't no perfect system but the problems run deep and wide.

well i finished with school in 79 and there was no such thing as free form spelling. and from my experience in university and working with folks from two universities the literacy level is not improving. some of the biggest mandatory first year classes are remedial grammar and spelling.

In university I can't submit anything non-electronically. Most people don't even write out their notes...penmanship is unnecessary, apparently. The lack of reading bothers me much mroe though...reading is pretty basic. Even an attempt would be good.
now there's a point. kids shouldn't be allowed to use computers for most class work until they are well into high school. i work with people that need calculators to do rudimentary addition and subtraction.

I wasn't allowed a calculator by my father...I see no purpose for them. I understand the troubles that some people have with math, but I nearly always figure out basic math before the other person can type in the numbers!
so math became my subject along with cursive...they absolutely refused to teach my son math.... 2 days a week i HAD to go to school and take my son to resource for math

i was in 11th grade, the very first year that calculators were allowed in a math class. my folks bought me a texas instruments calculator the size of a brick that cost over $100. of course i promptly disassembled it. i completed the yeardoing the figures on paper and finished near the top of the class. i never did tell the folks about all the bits of calculator in my locker.

etouffee - it is a wonderful sauce served over rice. usually made with shrimp or crawfish. first, i start with a roux (that may be a new one too) and then add the celery, bell pepper, onion, then the other stuff. it is superb.

Well, thats kind of what I like :) I do all the training, caring, grooming, feeding etc of all the dogs we have ever owned. My lab goes to agility and obedience class twice a week with me too

I dunno Tyger. My husband just desperately misses our cockers (dont we all?) and my kids just love rough housing with the lab - hes such a softy
we had a border collie from a rescue centre and had to have her put down as she went mad and started attacking other dogs and our other dog wouldn't go anywhere near her!

I remember the last time I went trick or treating, I was 14 and I was Mickey Mouse and my friend was Minnie Mouse and we went to this house and the elderly lady said in order to get a treat we had to sing the MIckey Mouse Song, so we did and she emptied her bowl in our bags. It was a hoot
my mam and dad were quite strict and i suppose i am in a way but i like children to have good manners and be polite.it doesn't take mush!
I just had some teens say thank you and even smile. Woohoo!

there are 3 buildings in the complex and the children trick or treat in them
the other complex I lived in had two 45 story buildings....missed giving out the candy and seeing all the kids in costumes
so I went to my brother's, my building keeps everything locked up, not kid friendly at all
so of course the kids invite their friends to go trick or treating; but it's great, we decorate the hallways too
yeah, this was the first year we lived in a house, but i just put a bucket of candy outside because the puppy flips out every time the doorbell rings

what's nice is that the small businesses on the avenue are getting in on the act; they give out candy to all the kids that venture in
