Our family is quite far away, but Thanksgiving has become a time to round up strays...all of us who don't have biological family around - our chosen " family" rather than given. Quite nice and much less family drama

Then every family has it's traditions, but the staples are often sweet potatoes, mashed white potatoes, stuffing, cranberries in some form, green beans ditto, and pies. I find it a great relief to be old enough to have given up some of the old obligatory family things, and do instead what really feels right an enjoyable.
my family always has pumpkin bread with the meal - a lightly sweet pumpkin and nut bread with raisins.
Since half of our guests are vegetarian we will have roast turkey, tofurkey, sweet potatoes, a fantastic stuffing with pecans, apricots and Grand Marnier, stuffed mushrooms, veggies as yet to be determined, and pear tart.
at the end of the day eva, you're the one thats eating it, so its up to you what you have.we don't always have the traditional xmas dinner either.

There is also a tradition lil, especially in the southern part of the country, to deep fry turkeys, burn the house and fill the emergency rooms. That sounds lovely dc-yes, please

Thanksgiving is one of the biggest travel days in the country. When I used to drive to family that day I was horribly aware that the road was filled with thousands of other people, most extremely anxious about the fact that they were going to be with family. Even those who don't come from pretty troubled families (and I think that's a pretty rarified group) know that bringing everyone together is hardly ever a beatific, peaceful occassion. Also, the tradition is to eat until completely stupified and then some more. But don't get me wrong, I love Thanksgiving!

About 7 years ago I gradually weaned everyone I know away from holiday gift giving. I let it be know that I wouldn't be giving gifts, except for spontaneous baked stuff or home made stuff - but that could come at any time, and that if they felt that it really would make them feel bad not to give gifts to me, that was fine, I wouldn't refuse them but that I wouldn't reciprocate because it was just too anxiety provoking and expensive for all of us. Since them I've begun to enjoy the holidays again. But I think it's different if one has small children.
My idea of a perfect christmas would be to rent a cabin up north... with one other family..no tv..maybe a radio so you can pick up one of those channels that plays christmas music 24/7 and everyone make the decoartion for a tree you cut down from the woods..and justhave a nice christmas dinner filled with board games... and books...and outdoors activities...

i come from a very religiously mixed family. end result i ended up a pan-theistic native american that obsevers sevoral, but not all jewish and xian things.
part of mine is also sephardic.. my grandmother was sephardi and my daughter married a sephardi, and my foster son who we took in is sephardi...........love the davening and tunes and love to dance with sephardi men israeli dancing! most of the dances and dancers are sephardi men in israel and they are so wonderful.
