I am taking my children to my farm.... buying ammunition and teaching them how to handle guns... rifles, pistols and shotguns.... cause I know they will come across them somewhere along the way... Sydney is getting worse, at least we are in a 'safer?' suburb. I just want them to know how to handle a firearm if they come across one, without hurting anyone
things are so different where you live. here it would be out of the question. Shooting is only allowed in clubs, and not by minors.

We had a very strange experience last night, high winds, which are not unusual, but we heard a loud crash (as if the door had blown open) went to investigate and, apparently the wind picked up the umbrella in middle of patio table and it came crashing down and totally shattered the glass tabletop to tiny shards

he has a nibble on a job today -- walked in to a store I was shopping at and asked if they are hiring -- filled out the app on the spot!
not really, stid. a reality check sounds like it is in order. He may need to do the research as well as talk to people who do the things he'd like to do. make up a list of things he needs to find out. like minimal starting pay and education.

thanks, sue -- I believe that is where he is headed. WE cannot afford to pay for college when he is clearly not engaged and willing to put the work in -- he knows this, and doesn't have the funds to pursue an education. I told him we won't even sign off on student loans for a year!

actually, there are mitigating factors, he thinks he is working hard, and he spends hours with books in front of him, but I don't think he is studying effectively -- and until he has an actual purpose and goal in mind he won't be motivated to use the supports that are available
I think my son is finally starting to turn around - he just missed being on probation this spring but (at least according to him) is doing very well this summer. Having gf out of his life should help (a lot). But it is all very hard - he was complaining about being treated like a child, which he is not, but under the current circumstances it is hard for me not to be really overprotective
well, if he can't even stay at the community college I'm not sure what other educational paths are open to him; once he decides what he really wants to do he might benefit from some counseling and tutoring at whatever college he winds up at
yes, fewer distractions should help -- would help the younger stidkid, but his gf is such a nice young lady. Next year, however, he is on notice to improve his grades "or else"
I am trying to steer him toward a vocational path at the moment - I think he needs more hands-on, more one-on-one guidance and more clear "endpoints" for tasks.

every graduate student who is earning a PhD writes a dissertation, which they have to defend to a committee of faculty.

The faculty come from the student's academic department and are familiar with the subject.
However, we also have what is called a dean's designee, which is a faculty member from outside the department chosen by the graduate dean.
so - every dissertation is 'challenged' by peers? ?

The dean's designee attends the defense and reports back to the graduate dean, and is supposed to ensure that the questioning of the student was rigorous (so the dissertation represents significant new knowledge) and fair (so the demands on the student are not excessive)

hey stid when we were out in seattle we were surprised at how late it stayed light out
I am wandering off... something about only 2 hours of sleep since 1:30 this morning. Nef, do you ever have trouble staying asleep? I am not used to waking in the middle of the night and then being roused by every little thing. *sigh* Can't drink milk, which was the remedy for everything when I was a kid. And the sleeping pills I used stopped working a couple years ago.
