this has been a rough week here, my best friend's 86 yr old mom passed away suddenly on fri, no warning, she had been out tto lunch that day, and played bridge the day before. they are jewish, so we sat shiva until last night, i did all the organizing for meals etc, as they are not allowed to "work" while mourning. Then we got the call that DH's 89 yr old aunt passed in her sleep fri nite, she had had a stroke 2 mos. ago, and had bounced back with just a verrrrrry slight slur to her speech. The authorities were threatening the family with toxicology and autopsy. Son had to talk reason to them, so they just did tox, funeral will be on sat. in connecticut, hope we are not waiting for a third..

this is interesting...This is a fantastic chart, because it shows the speed at which our vocabulary really grows. Between the ages of 3 and roughly 16, our vocabulary explodes at an average rate of almost 4 new words a day (3.8, to be more exact). Then, between the ages of 16 and 50, our vocabulary growth is slower, but still fairly consistent: around 1 new word a day (0.85, to be precise). Finally, beyond 50, vocabulary size appears to remain fairly constant.

I find that a lot of the fiction I've read over the years hasn't been the usual or common fiction (which I do read ) but I've read a lot of 18th and 19th century fiction over time. That usually stretched my vocabulary a lot more than modern fiction does

that is what they tell you to do - don't check any word unless you really know the definition. I know they are trying to generate some stats, but their problem is that those who take the test score much higher than they know the average population to be, and this corresponds to a higher than average SAT score listed also. I suspect those with bad vocabularies do not take the test

You're right KJE. People who don't think they have a good vocabulary wouldn't bother with the test, thus the results are skewed.

I agree with crossy, though. It should be a test for readers. I once read the average book is written at a 6th grade reading level (ie: along the line of Readers' Digest); so unless you are reading something that is at a higher level that average; you won't come across a large number of these words. Try reading somethin by Thackeray or Wordsworth and Coleridge and that is at a whole'nother level of language than what we read today

I started at a small local college so only took their test... then when I went on, everyone just accepted the grades from the college as proof of ability so I never sat for either. I did take the PSAT in my sophmore year though
The Aunt that raised me used to tell us that we needed to talk in plain English so people understood us as not everyone had good vocabulary skills.
I am sure the words we actually use are much much less in number than those we can define once they are seen... no one talks like that for exactly the reason you stated, nef - the purpose is communication and no one would have a clue what you were saying
I went to a 3 year nursing school (diploma program); did the BSN later after I was an RN
But like crossy says; if you read David Copperfield or any of the book from the 19th century; the characters "sure used fancy words!"
Even Thoreau's Walden Pond (one of my favorites when I was young) was written above today's "common" vocabualry

I even learn new words from Stephen King. He uses the word "obdurate" a lot in "11/23/63". Referring to how the past is inflexible when it comes to change.

I have fun suggesting to our kids that they drag out the dictionary when they want to know what a word means - they always want to race to the computer, it's amazing how bad they are at searching with a real live dictionary in their hands.
I'll have to ask my kids to take this and have their friends do it too; it will be interesting to see how they do.
plus I have a shiny new (3-yr-old) set of encyclopedias at my library, and in the 2 years it's been there, not a soul (besides me) has shown any interest in it at all, sigh...
rbud, you aren't a dummy at all! AND, I don't know if my daughter can use a real dictionary! She will grab a thesaurys any day; even when she was in grade school! (I think she had trouble spelling and the thesaurus was easier for her to use)
it is a digital age... nothing wrong with using the computer. It is one of the things we discuss as educators... how education should change to better reflect the age we live in. Why memorize something you need rarely and can look up in 2 seconds... focus on different objectives
