neil, I have to have plastic surgery on the bridge of my nose to remove a basal cell carcinoma. It will involve a skin graft about the size of a 50 cent piece. I'm told it will take about an hour. I'm being taken there (ferry to Vancouver Island needed) by two friends and will be back in the evening. I have to go back four days later for the first dressing removal by the surgeon. After that, daily changes probably by the nurses here on Salt Spring -- the same gang who healed my leg (took 4 months) after the ankle break surgery.

12:55 am

Oh no, jilli. :( I hope it goes well for you!

God bless Jilli and I wish you a speedy recovery.

I'm sure they'll take excellent care of you. They'd better!

12:57 am

...and, hi everyone!

12:57 am

hello mar

12:57 am

hello marmar -- thinks! Haven't seen you in ages!

Hi Marmar!

LTNS.

12:57 am

good night :) -- don't know if you saw my 12:50 post, jill -- good luck!

12:58 am

Hi Neil! I know. I see you all every day, just keep quiet unless I "have to" talk.

Haha, not me you don't. I'm not on here that much these days... haven't been for several weeks. Got busy... started a new full-time job.

12:59 am

Hi West!

12:59 am

I am such a recluse here but otherwise I spend the entire morning and don't get a bit of my work done in the house. I do keep up with everyone and keep you all in my prayers!

1:00 am

I pray that all goes well for you Jillibus.

1:00 am

thanks, nan -- just saw it -- pleasant dreams.

1:01 am

thank you mar..this babble can certainly use some

1:01 am

thaks to you too, peach! Gosh, you guys are great!

1:01 am

I have a new name for you..rejilliant

1:02 am

West, can't we all?! Did I miss something?

1:02 am

no you didn't mar just need help being a better person

1:03 am

you are always a ray of sunshine

I know, Marmar... Babble is highly addictive and it's easy to spend more time here than you intended to.

[and get nothing else done as a result]

1:07 am

haha, west, and I don't even like re words!

1:07 am

jigidi is highly addictive too...

1:07 am

thanks y'all. My ray of sunshine just woke up and appeared in the living room asking me about Jilli's flag icon (very pretty) and now we are looking up interesting flags like Nepal and Lybia...google is also highly addictive!

1:08 am

(I was referring to son Marcus there)

1:09 am

and now I have an iPhone -- talk about addicition...!

1:09 am

love that name..my daughter is currently touring Scotland with her friend Marcus and yes his middle name is Aurelius

1:10 am

iPhones are so convenient aren't they?

1:10 am

Well, I'd better be good and go to bed -- goodnight all and thanks for the boosts...*poof

1:11 am

good night jilli..sleep well and don't worry

1:12 am

West, Marcus is the only boys name we could agree on and we looked for weeks at name books and bibles and family records. Marcus was just right somehow!

1:12 am

it is such a strong beautiful name

Oh wow, jilli... technology! My bro has an iPhone too. I'm still using my Motorolla DroidX, for now.

1:13 am

Oh my, I just saw the middle name West! How cool is that?! We say that to our Marcus sometimes. When he was little and the Deutsche Mark was still our money here in Gemrany, we used to call him D-Mark!

1:14 am

that's cute.

1:15 am

Marcus' middle name is Austin, my dad's middle name and the capital of Texas, my homestate.

1:15 am

I like that

1:16 am

have you been back with the kids?

1:16 am

you have a daughter too, yes?

1:17 am

I have two girls West, Marcus is the baby of the fam. They are all in double digits now, 14, 13 and Marcus is 11.

1:18 am

nice family

1:18 am

and older than I thought

1:18 am

never boring!

1:18 am

I pictured your children as pre-schoolers

1:19 am

just think..you'll soon have 3 teen-agers

1:20 am

that's funny, I treat them as pre-schoolers! just kidding. I am trying to allow them to become who they are supposed to be without hanging on to the children that they were...it's hard.

1:20 am

it always is

1:21 am

you sound like a good mom

1:21 am

You've been there!

1:21 am

they will always be your children no matter how old they get

1:24 am

“The greatest gifts you can give your children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence.” Denis Waitley

1:24 am

When Natalie (middle child) was about three I asked her (jokingly) to promise to never leave me and always stay and take care of me till I'm old....blah blah and she of course being a sweet 3 yr. old said "oh yes mommy, I'll never leave you". I've teased her a couple times since then about her promise and she just cringes!

1:24 am

lovely quote West!

1:25 am

it is one of my favorites

1:25 am

that was so sweet mar

1:26 am

I still have 'coupons' Erin made for me in 1st grade that I could redeem..like I will make a bath for you etc

1:26 am

I still have them and keep saying I'm going to cash them in someday

1:29 am

Mine did stuff like that too. Love it! Marcus gave me a coupons for a movie date for my b-day this year, we just redeemed it last weekend!

1:29 am

cool. what did you see?

1:30 am

Diary of a Wimpy Kid 3. Very cute. We love this series!

1:31 am

our 9 yr old granddaughter loves it too

1:32 am

There are some decent and good things out there for kids, this is one! So much junk to sift through though.

1:32 am

we can't afford to go to the movies..just wait until we can see them on TV

1:33 am

well we can but I hate to spend the money..and I can watch at home in my pajamas

1:35 am

We usually do that, but he saved his allowance for my ticket and he used a gift certif. he received on his birthday and we brought our own M&Ms!

1:36 am

what a sweet boy !

1:37 am

our son is our youngest too ..has 3 older sisters and I always said he'd make someone a good husband..and he has

1:37 am

We are big movie buffs, the whole family.

1:39 am

I used to love going to movies on the base..same movie and way cheaper

1:43 am

I agree about the advantage for a boy that has big sisters. I hope it holds true for Marcus. We used to have access to the Giessen military theater but those days are gone now. So sad, the whole place is overgrown and falling apart.

1:45 am

so many bases here are closed now..some have commercial uses now but no commissaries for us retirees

1:52 am

I was away making tea. Yes, the German bases are closing one after the other. They did renovate the living quarters into apartments and it is totally gorgeous, tons of playgrounds and grassy areas, surrounded by forests.

1:53 am

are they renting them out to civilians?

1:54 am

Yes, Giessen has a big university and they need lots of student housing and of course, lots of young families that can't afford a house right away.

1:54 am

then that is a good use

1:55 am

I love reading about the German economy

1:56 am

somebody is doing something right

1:57 am

I love Germany, and I love Angelika Merkel!

1:58 am

If anyone can turn Europe around she can

1:59 am

certain countries that shall remain nameless that is

2:03 am

I know. I hate when people disrespect her. She is a miracle worker and they should be thanking her!

2:03 am

3:52 am

good morning Babble friends

3:56 am

Morning :)

3:56 am

hey Katie :D

3:59 am

Hello. Another puny, innocuous grid.

4:00 am

we seem to have an epidemic of those. Hello BabbleRabble, glad to see you :)

4:07 am

halfway. And slowing down.

4:09 am

There real is nothing really unfamiliar about the grid

4:09 am

hmmm ok that is good to know.

4:12 am

Someone mentioned malarkey the other day: Balderdash, blather, bunkum, claptrap, codswallop, crap, drivel, fiddle-faddle, flapdoodle, garbage, hogwash, hooey, hokum, horse feathers, horse pucky, humbug, nonsense, piffle, poppycock, rubbish, tommy-rot, or common, everyday whang-doodle.

4:12 am

:D :D Some real oldfashioned beauties there!

4:13 am

I am missing 'fiddle sticks'

4:14 am

twaddle

4:14 am

back in a few minutes, toilet break

4:21 am

back. Piffle and poppycock have such a good ring

4:26 am

2/3 and only one 6, no 7s. I am back in my old fomr :D

I am struggling with the A in the lst column and the E in the 2nd, can anyone help please

4:27 am

Hi sprite, i am stuck half way again but do have 3 six's and i seven

4:29 am

ar5/10 x 2

4:30 am

er5/10 and ea4/4, I think

4:31 am

The we 6/30 is the Scottish variant of weasand: throat, gullet; also : trachea and windpipe

4:31 am

oh nice. Thank you.

got the ar with the latin plural but can't find the other one

4:32 am

thank you :)

4:35 am

4:43 am

4:44 am

:) good one. I am up to 7 x 6 now. One to go.

4:46 am

4:46 am

4:47 am

there is also a synonym for wampum

4:48 am

:D :D Oohhhhh of course! *sneaks away to google to find out what wampum is*

4:49 am

ah of course. Peag. I knew (not). Thanks again!

4:49 am

Peag is a word that has stuck with me.

4:50 am

will try to remember. Good words, all of them.

4:51 am

flibbertigibbet to add to the malarkey

4:52 am

I thought that was a word for a airheaded person, lol. I know it from The Sound of Music musical.

4:53 am

It is .... I was thinking an airhead might have some malarkey

4:54 am

oh yes, definitely. Empty gossip from an airhead. No surprise there.

4:55 am

4:58 am

And the same for you ... good to see you again

4:59 am

:) I think your wish worked, I see a bit of sun appearing here. Will take Terra for a walk while it lasts. Have a peaceful day/night, BabbleRabble. Bye all!

br have you spotted ka4 yet? if so can you explain why this dutch word is in the list? (couldnt find a better explanation than dutch))

too bad spirit isnt here, but would she know why the english/americans would use a dutch term when theyve got a perfect one on their own?

6:32 am

hey, shallow -- FYI there are LOTS of non-English words that show up in the grid -- quite a selection of yiddish ones as well :-)

6:33 am

Babble uses the Enable dictionary . . . and a very old version to boot . . . sigh

6:34 am

ok, must take pups out to pee -- back in a bit *poof*

down to 23 taking a break

well granted that, theres a large jewish/polish immigrant group, also a few german terms are there, where english isnt precise or fashionable, but sometimes i stumble over terms that make me wonder

6:38 am

I have no answer, Shallow. The ka 4 is said to be a cognate of the English word.

thats exactly what i was wondering about

6:41 am

have found the word so not sure what you are refering too

6:41 am

was actually only tipping off this discussion for the ka4 to find out wether i missed a meaning - for example if you woulnt know the english meaning for term hell and only the german (where it means bright) you get confused. Of course i had checked some dicts, but sometimes someone knows a usage thats not necesseraily in there. thanks for all your contributions

6:48 am

english word for hell means bright in german - eek

same spelling, yes

6:49 am

There are other meanings. I think I should simply ignore queries after that.

Crohn's treatment is a lot of trial and err .... is Frank keeping a diary of what he is eating?

7:39 am

Yes, call the doctor you have been seeing!!!!!

7:40 am

Yes, he is, BR, although he'd started feeling better and had gotten lax about it - he's filled it in, though, and added this incident. He's still getting his head around all this.

7:41 am

It will take awhile before he recognizes the potential cause and effect

He's also ramping down the prednisone (as prescribed by the non-GI doctor in the hospital) and hasn't started the new medicine yet. there are some interesting ones to be sure and i am also sure i count among them at times

9:36 am

... Daughter1 went to McGill for four years and we always filled up at the last gas station in Ontario because it was 6 - 13 cents a litre less expensive than on the other side of the border ... ... but then we got the HST ... and that put sales tax on gasoline in Ontario ... and I'm wondering if there was already sales tax on gas in Quebec so that the difference would disappear ... ... must drive east next summer to find out ...

9:37 am

yes, when i was running my last station it added 8 cents a litre to the tank cost in my underground tanks

9:38 am

before that we only paid gst on fuel, nat gas and propane

9:39 am

actually in the long run,it is what made me give up the fuel business.it ate up my fuel margins

9:40 am

that and the big box stores coming in and putting up 100,000 sq foot stores and tossing 16 gas pumps out there and selling at cost just to get you in the store

9:49 am

bacon and crossy are synonymous

9:49 am

reminds me,i best look up the word bacon in french just in case hehe

9:50 am

lol! it is "lard" should of known

9:51 am

lol

9:51 am

<----sending BR a chamomile tea and a hug

9:52 am

that is too funny french for bacon is lard - really? :)

9:52 am

yup

9:52 am

The true French word for bacon is lard (masc., "lahr"), but the type of bacon that Americans and English commonly eat for breakfast isn't very common at all in France. So you will also often find the English word in French contexts, which they give a sort of hybrid pronunciation: "beh-ee-koh[n]" (with the typical French "on" nasal vowel at the end).

9:53 am

hilarious

9:53 am

now i can have breakfast if i am tossed off the bus at least:))))

9:53 am

i know eggs "ouef"

9:54 am

and can say "smirnoff" in about 30 languages,so i am fine

9:55 am

... checked babblefish ... ... they give "lard" "bacon" and "bacon on tranches" ... ... the last looks like "sliced bacon" to me ... but I don't remember what it says on the package in the refrigerator ...

9:56 am

let me peek.i have a pound of pork heaven in the fridge

9:56 am

actually, the french pronounce bacon the english way, I haven't heard anyone use the nasal "on" ending in years. And although "lard" does technically include bacon, most french will argue that "lard" only refers to the fat, not the meat.

9:57 am

it is also the english way on the package

9:57 am

my! bacon is such fun eh? lol

9:58 am

... that was my impression of the babblefish translation ... ... and you've likely got to watch out if you're in Quebec or in France ...

9:58 am

feeling better now.here BR have a nice crossy style B.L.T and smile

9:58 am

like i say as for quebec,i drive through 9 times out of ten

9:59 am

and france,ah that is not likely

9:59 am

and the french say the quebecers speak a bastardized form of french anyways, they tend to snub it..i am told

10:00 am

Have your fun

10:00 am

ill have to ask ruby bout it.she will know

10:00 am

canadian french can be a little odd at times, they bring in new words, and also use incredibly archaic terms

10:01 am

... I believe the situation is that the french in Quebec got stuck in the seventeenth century when they became isolated from France ...

10:01 am

indeed buggie

10:01 am

interesting

10:01 am

i Do know they have real nasty signage by-law in quebec and they are militant about it

10:03 am

besides, the french often have trouble understanding the quebecois, the accents are so different

10:04 am

not to worry smorse.most people can just point at a number on the menu anyways and like i say as long as i can say smirnoff,i am good to go

10:04 am

... just go to Chez Cora's and point to the picture in the menu and you won't starve ... even off Montreal Island

10:04 am

11:05 am

and yes, the double a word

11:05 am

that is scary..hope he's not allergic to his meds

11:05 am

apparently it is also a scots word meaning a thick wet fog along the seacoast (a word I use every day here in the Illinois prairie...)

11:06 am

no, I think it was the ice cream, west, he needs to stay away from fat for a while

11:06 am

11:36 am

:)

11:38 am

back in my druggie days....I went to work high every day for a year...thanks to a drought, I was forced to go in straight one day...boss called me in his office and asked if I was on something

11:39 am

now I'm just naturally weird, no drugs needed :)

11:40 am

reminds of of a very famous twilight zone show.camera is over a operating table, surgeons are frantically working on a girl who was born horribly disfigured,no faces are shown the entire time.then comes the day the bandages come off.a nurse shrieks in terror and drops a tray and runs from the room, the doctors look shocked and agast.the surgery was a failure.camera pans to the patient and we see this beautiful woman..then pans over to the dr,s who all have toad faces..normal? what is normal it asks you

11:41 am

haha.. I remember that one...hilarious

11:41 am

dear crossy... i think they might have been pigs?

6:10 pm

hi all!

6:11 pm

Hi uusue!

6:11 pm

How is Frank?

Yipes..*shudders at thought of no ice cream*

6:14 pm

yeah, not only does he have all the gluten free restrictions, but now he has to be low fat and low fiber too

6:14 pm

Do they have a colonoscopy date yet?

6:15 pm

Oct. 30

6:15 pm

Edy's has a fat free brand of ice cream.

6:15 pm

have to wait until the inflammation subsides

6:15 pm

Good!

6:15 pm

Could be related to the lactose as well...

6:16 pm

he's been eating yogurt with no problem, as well as milk-based soups, so I don't think that's it

6:16 pm

That's good....

6:17 pm

and I'll check out the ice cream, molly, but he's sensitive to so many ingredients that it gets very tricky very quickly (he was ok with plain sherbet so I am going to try to get some more of that)

6:17 pm

Well thank God. Because I cry foul on one person dealing with celiac, Crohn's and lactose intolerance.

6:17 pm

indeed :-)

6:18 pm

and we suspect that some of the things he thought he was sensitive to might have been related to Crohn's flares; maybe if his disease is under control he can handle them (things like grapes)

6:18 pm

That is true uusue....

6:19 pm

but for the nonce we want to be very conservative

6:21 pm

<-------!!FW!!
