since hubby is in palliative care we get little sleep... either walter or myself or one of the kids is with him all night... at about 2 am a few nights ago, walter saw a car pull up in front of our house and a man got out and was looking at the fire hydrant

it was quite dark. he could not determine the type or color of car but said the man seemed to have a tuber or hose or something and he touched the top of the fire hydrant with it and then got back in his car and drove up the street slowly.

when he told me, i figured that this was od, i called the police. they were here in 3 minutes... checked out the huydrand and could see nothing wrong and were stumped also.. but a few minutes later,, there was another police car cheching from the othe4r diretion... then 4 of them... after 20 minutes or so they concluded that there was nothing apparently amiss so they all left, assuring us thet they would be checking the area closely for a few days

Unfortunately driving east and back is not fun - we hit a kangaroo, an emu and a huge tree branch on Fraser Island so car going in for repairs when we get back from Sydney.

It has been very dry in the middle this year and all the animals come to the road for water - bit like running the gauntlet. In northern NSW we also have wild goats and on the way to Darwin we have unfenced cattle stations.

Hi ruby and rose. Popping in and out today. Have a day off work and trying to catch up on housework, but as we're in the middle of a heatwave I need frequent breaks!
ruby, we have had to put in a watering system. believe it or not, the boxes under mother's windows do not get enough rain, even in winter.
it's hot here in the afternoon,but beautiful in the AM and at night, couldn't be nicer. I am so happy
What I liked about window boxes was that they were in the kitchen/breakfast room, so were easy to water

word to the wise - don't ever, ever mess up on the USPS website and need a refund from them. they claim you can get one, but it can take up to three months to receive it. i have yet to get mine, am hoping that eventually i will in fact get it, but wonder if the long time is a trick, they figure most people will forget by then and never follow up?
ugh,i never have much call to use our postal service anymore,with direct deposits,online billing and the like and if i need to send a package,it always goes courrier

That sounds delicicious Buggie. i love beef Bourginon, and in the winter especially i love to ccok stews nd casseroles that take a few hours to cook, the meat is always tender and very tasty

we've had really humid weather for 2 weeks which we're definitely not use to getting up north and they told us last week that we were in for storms and thunder, but we never got any
yeah, I do casseroles but usually cook them for about an hour as my meat is usually tender anyway. I keep back any left over casserole juice and freeze it to use as stock, which is what I used for the beef tonight (duck casserole juice spiced with a little cinnamon, cloves and ginger)

well, I used a "4 spices" blend (cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and ginger). I put it in the duck casserole, was suprised how strong it was, but gave the duck a honey taste, and then reusing it for the beef meant it wasn't too strong
it is not sx in a canoe that is he problem,it is trying to figure out where to store the paddles that is the problem

I like ginger with hoisin sauce,and garlic with pork loins.leave to marinate as long as possible.24 is best but even a couple of hours will give it a great flavour.one of my next door neighbours hates pork but he had that and he loved it and now his mam has to make iot.But i must admit, with cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon i would use them more for puddings, not that i make many anymore
Ginger is a very strong root vegetable to use, i like to juice it with apples ,but i only use a tiny bit as it is overpowering

hmmm, never tried marinating with hoisin sauce... and yes, I usually use ginger in curries, cloves I rarely use apart from bread sauce, and nutmeg I mainly use for white sauce (for moussaka and things) or soups. the casserole was a case of wanting to try something different...

oh pineau is great, especially a good white pineau chilled on a hot summer day

i think i tried pineau de charantes years ago - is it a little sweet and "thicker" than wine?
i would try it again now.i drank it, because at the time i wasn't a big wine drinker, and i was told that pineau, was similar to martini, which i s what i drank.but i only liked the martini rosso, so i had a few of these which are normally in little glasses but our family friend who was from cornwall was giving me wine glasses full of it, so 4 later, i was plastered :)

well, that's like not pastis, i can't think of the name, it's white and very alcoholic and can't get bought in shops. it is made by farmers and the recipe goes from son to son and i can't think of the blooming name.it's really strong...something eau i think
