The biggest part of our entertaining should be over... a few small dinners out planned, but no more major cooking for me :). Yeah, a couple, ru.. passed pretty quickly - I took a few time outs. Ellie was great, even when the bratty boy got into her face... she didn't even nip at him, and our son-in-law was so great - monitored Ellie closely just to be sure there were no issues.

So true... I do get sick of people referring to kids as ADHD, when they just need a good crack on the hiney.

Couldn't agree more, Dee. Bad behaviour is not ADHD.
Hubby did really well corralling the kids; he even managed to find some of our daughter's old toys in the unpacked basement - Barbies, Leggos, Lincoln Logs. He also cajoled them into picking up by offering the opening of presents, so I didn't have to pick up one toy... I truly appreciated that!
Good for your hubby! Great that you got the support you needed.

I did have to chuckle though... several pre - menopausal ladies... opened a few windows and doors for "flash" moments... really laughed about that. One age 13; 4 under the age of 5.

We discovered our basement is perfect for kids... not much to hurt down there and several very large open spaces; one carpeted area where they played, but still could be monitored...
And you can lock them there until it's time to go home and it's soundproofed!!!

Worked out better than I imagined, but I did discover I have become more of an introvert ... they were here from about 10:45 AM until 9 PM, and I truly could not wait for everyone to leave... much too long of a day for me.

I totally agree, pug... from 8 to 12 seems to be more difficult.
speaking of dogs and brats - I recall once my sister was visiting with her then-about-5-yr-old son, (her only child). He cornered our little dog and tried to take a bone from her (she'd just gotten it). She nipped him (very minor), major tears, sis got all indignant demanding the "vicious animal" needed to be put down... I laughed at her.
Actually 8 - 12 were probably the ages I most enjoyed teaching!
I find they are more difficult at 80
Again, our son-in-law made huge brownie points and washed every single crock pot and serving dish...

Teaching, but entertaining for that long is tough... plus kids do not go outside to play like we always did.

rbud that is EXACTLY what I thought would happen... especially with the little boy who was tormenting Ellie. Jason was great about anticipating issues... he put Ellie in the bedroom for a bit, just to protect her.

I have come to the conclusion that a lot of kids' bad behavior is because parents are just plain lazy and don't want to be bothered with discipline. The little boy actually stomped a foot, screamed at his mum and got away with it. I had to find work to do in the kitchen, so I didn't say something stern to the mom... it is craziness.
He would have been smacked and put in a corner so fast his head would be spinning, if he were mine.

I agree, Dee, so many younger people I know have the kids and dote during the baby years, then reality hits and they lose interest in parenting.
I remember one day our daughter was mouthing off to me in my bathroom, and I threw water in her face... shocked her so much, she shut up. I only did that once, but she discovered I could get pretty creative with punishments. Exactly, rb.
I never liked spanking, so I found other ways to get her attention, but I never let her get away with being disrespectful.

our son has a friend whose sister often comes over with him, she has a little boy nearly 3 who she ignores, he does whatever he wants to our living room and runs off every chance he gets. Town cop brought him back once from down the block. She didn't even notice he was gone.

I am sure it did. Supposedly, one is predisposed genetically to the arthritises. RA is often triggered then by a virus, which they think I encountered in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1995. Once triggered the disease takes off. That is really too bad, ru. Is your brother older or younger?

We have space heaters but am trying to hold off using them as long as I can. Electricity is very expensive here. Around $250.00 US dollars per month.
we have gas heat but either one is costly

And the $250.00 was for October and November - it is even more in the summer months.

It is absolutely maddening, bichon. Like Scrabble but with hexagons and palindromic words are worth more, so it is very tough.
