We've booked 6 nights in Amsterdam from Wednesday - I am looking forward to that
oh wow matty! I really really hope the weather will improve then. Wish we could meet... am having my surgery on thursday though, so that is not an option alas
Oh, what a shame! We'll be there from Wednesday through to Tuesday
if all goes well, I'll be home on friday. But the first days will be painful, no outings to amsterdam :(
Well, if it goes fabulously, let us know ;)
will do :D
And I've discovered it's the SAIL festival. Have you any suggestions
On what to do, where to eat etc?
We're staying here http://www.hoteldehallen.com/en
stats for any 9 or 10 please
the Sail is always impressive to watch... crowded though. Walking through amsterdam along the waters and all the little shops is fun. If you are into science, visit the Nemo.
he9/60 (compound)
tr10/77
thans sprite will take a look
oh that is in or near the Jordaan. Lovely area to walk through and see all the little shops and houses.
you might want to visit the Anne Frank house... interesting and somehow a message of hope. Lots of art in the Rijksmuseum...
So plenty to do!
This restaurant was recommended - http://www.balthazarskeuken.nl/en/
oh yes, amsterdam is great. The flower market is nice too. And the Albert Cuyp market, very impressive fish and flower stalls
(still looking for the 9 and 10
see you later, kids, 124 !! to go
Balthazar's is very good, and nice people
he9: what beats in your chest + painful
tr8/10 combo: christian(s) betraying other christians in the time of the roman persecution. First 6 letters of a long-standing way of thinking/acting handed down through generations... + either/**... long plural
let me see if I can find the restaurant where Liz and I lunched, that was very good too
hm cannot seem to find it... will ask Liz if she remembers the name
Phantom: trajectory.
ok, sent Liz an email :) There is a good chance the name is in their photo albums.
nice one, zooz
Did you see that about the crane in Holland, Sprite?
yeah, I did, zooz. Quite a bad accident
Sorry for the peoples homes.
yes. Could have been a lot worse though.
fireflies. Cannot believe Ro4's name was my last word.
I thought it was a bit silly trying to move a very heavy bit of bridge into place on a barge.
*hugs* all and have a lovely day
Congrats, Sprite!
And you.Bye :-)

Matty check out the D;Vijff Vlieghen restaurant in Amsterdam (The Five Flies). When I was there ages ago it was fantastic.
Dee's list is in my profile if anyone needs it.
Thanks Sprite (got distracted - sorry_
Clues are up
Lickety to the rescue. What would we do without him?
Please - a clue for the en 9/10
en9...to go in, put spell it different, end it like the Brits end some words + what is in this box, then plural
Apparently it's a ballet term
Not that I would know that from any graceful ballet experience of my own : D
Got it, Molly. Thanks
Oh good, glad you found it.
I'm sorry, I'm not seeing the en9...
Found it
Thanks
Good morning,everybody:)
Hi Crossy. I have been lurking.
((scrabby))
good morning dear friends
Hi Trif. What are your plans this weekend?
Howdy, trif
And you, Crossy?
helping Tristan move some more stuff into his new apartment today, and yard work, I guess....what's on your docket?
I have been on call since 5pm yesterday and continue til MOnday 8am. I work in the office from 8:30 until at least 12, longer if there are lots of sick kids.
DId he start his job?
ugh! how many docs are in your coverage service?
no, and he is VEXED - they pushed his start date back AGAIN. Thank goodness he has such a vibrant freelance career going!
5 docs. I do 8 weekends a year. It is a 63 hour marathon.
My mom used to have to cover for seven docs, plus herself, and it was too much! she switched into a service with only three people, and it was much better
Good for him, doing work on his own. Very resourceful!
Been lurking as well. Wow, That is quite the long on-call schedule! I hope you have some time for yourself once it is done, scrabby!
thanks scrabbler. its hand to mouth, but it seems to be working for him, so I tip my hat
We are searching for a new doc as the oldest (71) wants to retire in the next year or two.
We pay for an overnight triage RN service from 9pm-8am. The RN calls us if a kid needs to go to the hospital. Usually we can sleep all night, which is essential for functioning the next day.
my mum had the SWEETEST doc in her practice - still going at 81! he only did simple stuff like strep throats, colds, etc. Wanted to keep a hand in, worked three days a week - everyone loved him
section of the county we live in are so under-serviced by G.P's that one town actually went ahead and built a fully loaded medical centre on spec and their own time to have all the amenities ready should they be lucky enough to entice a doctor to move up here from the city.
Bill is a kind, patient, conscientious doc. I cannot imagine him not being in the office. And he manages the business.
that's a good idea, scrabbler! my mum got some amazing calls back in the day - "is it too hot for the baby to wear an undershirt?" or, drug seeking patients of the other docs, or, my all time favorite - Sunday at 2pm, needed stuff for her migraines, and then threw in "now that I have you on the phone, can I book my mammogram?"
Good morning all.
morning sukee
Oh, we get MANY inappropriate phone calls. People are not resourceful at all. And common sense is rather uncommon.
Speaking of doctors, it took me 2 years to find a family doctor when I moved here.
Hi sukee
Good morning, better get going here
Hi Scrabs, sukee, Trif
wow, I did not realize that Canada had such a shortage.
Arf, bichon.
Looks like a good grid for a Saturday.
just in sporatic spots. Doctors like to cluster down south.
bonjour bichon
Yes, I am sure I would have had no problem in Toronto
No, no issues at all in T.O
in other news - tertiare's boyfriend left for college today - much sadness radiating from one corner of my house...poor little mite. I remember that feeling!
We have been looking for a new doc for a year and are struggling. We are in a rural area, 30+ miles away from BUffalo.
Oh but what an adventure, off to college:))
yes, but not so fun for those left behind....
Tough at that age, but they will cope and move on with their lives.
Is Tertiare going to be a junior?
Scrabs, do you have a PA?
yes maam.
We have 2 PAs and 2 NPs.
secret - I'm actually fine with it! he is a lovely boy, but she needs to focus on school this year, and they spent every waking moment together....
About 3 years ago, we got wind of a G.P coming availabe in a town 20 minutes from where I am. Once the put out her shingle, it was posted in all the local pharmacies that she was taking new patients--she maxed out in a week:(
To change subject, I think my cats have grown in 3 weeks.
When does field hockey season begin?
Yaa for new kitties!
MAN scrabbler, you remember everything! In about a week.
They have probably doubled in size, right, Sukee?
I found my doctor by networking, a woman at work told me the clinic was accepting new patients. My new doctor was just out of school and residency.
Not quite.
Which one is slpha-cat?
I am blessed with quite a memory and storage system in my brain.
alpha
The black one it seems, he starts all the trouble.
Even though he is smaller.
I figured as much:)
I love field hockey. It starts, and an hour later it ends. Unlike track meets which are ENDLESS.
The other one makes up for it by trying to eat all the food.
One of my sisters played field hockey in the fall but my other sister played tennis in the fall, and the 2 of us played college tennis too. Great memories.
she does better with the structure, that is for sure
Playing a sport makes one budget time, particularly with studying.
I can't believe it is almost time for school to start again. I had SUCH a long to-do list, and not so much of it got "to-done" but all in all I had a good summer.
I notice some kids in the states are already back at school.
Summer always flies by so quickly. I am almost done painting my deck, but I have many others chores to do.
Local kids return to school Sept 8.
Same here.
we go back august 31st, the kids come back the next day.
My greatnephew Jax will start full-time 3-year old preschool. He will love it.
this summer, I was VERY glad we started so early, since we ended up with so many snow days.
There is a teacher's strike looming over the schools this year. They started in spring.
Oh, no, sukee.
im going into my first whole year without the dragon lady. huzzah!!!
My California grands started school on Wed. They have an all year calendar. Two weeks off in Oct. Fortunately their parents can afford it
What liberation, Trif!
Time to make breakfast, I will be back shortly.
im saying!
All year school is best for learning. Too many kids go brain-dead in the summer.
Classes start on Sept 8th here as well:)
I am so jealous, bichon! that is the best way to go
Only 6 weeks off for the summer
I still occasionally have nightmares of my former employer Richard Head.
I remember you speaking of him
oh god, Richard head!!!!!
I do remember that
One thing I always ask my patients is about hobbies and favorite activities. #1 = videogames/iPad. #2 = TV. *sigh*
and Mine Craft
I occasionally think about life in that office and I feel badly for the remaining employees, yet they can also depart, and some have.
I feel a bit sorry for people like the dragon lady, and old mr Richard - they are leaving a trail of alienated, sad people in their wake....to be so clueless about how you are regarded seems sad to me
What were the issues with him, I forget?
They live lives of denial, rationalization, and insecurity. They must suffer internally because their subconsciouses KNOW the truth.
He is a narcissistic, demeaning, degrading, overcritical, micromanager.
And he pleased the parents at all times so rxd antibiotics and other meds (stimulants!) when not indicated.
I know the type
I remember the joy and elation on the day you were able to leave him behind, scrabby:)
A dangerous MD.
everyone now and then I come across one of the ha4 notes the dragon lady left in my desk. I used to hang on to them, sort of as evidence of how ridiculous she was....but now when I find one I chuck it right away, lest her funk leak out and ruin my day. bad qi!
Yes, I was proud of myself for choosing to depart.
every*
So often now, in my current practice, something happens and I think, "Richard would NEVER have done something so _________ (rational, kind, generous, thoughtful...).
It is terrible when any practitioner in any field, starts to think of his patients as nothing but breathing pieces of meat. This fellow seems like the type.
At 140/157 I must get ready to go to the office. Enjoy the day, friends.
tc, scrabby
Crossy, he wanted business (so please the customer) and admiration (please the customer), but he made bad decisions and overmedicated kids.
:(
I'm back.
wb, sykee
sukee*
Have to share this cute picture. Nathan Fillion with otters :) http://goo.gl/V2fEO9
Everything is better with otters;)
That is what I say :)
and panda bears
Have a pool? that is great. Have a pool with otters? that is amazing:)
Not pandas though, they leave tons of hair in the pool filters:)
That is true.
dore
sorry...
everything is better with Nathan Fillion!
:)
For sure.
Good Canadian boy :)
Y's out of the way
Hi all :)
hi Liz
Very happy to see Lickety for my last 70 words - though I won't get them all tonight.
Howdy, Liz:)
okay- need chog consensus here, and no need to read much into this - just asking really....where do we all stand on the silent treatment? Is it ever effective? Is it a good idea? A bad one? please weigh in....
I think it is childish myself.
Depends on the situation and what you mean by it - which I realise is totally unhelpful!
lurker's observation -- seems to be pretty effective . . . no?
I am so on the fence - I think it can be good if everyone needs to gather their thoughts and calm down....but at a certain point it seems talking is the only way through something, yes?
Silence can sometimes just be a matter of being basically polite where necessary and no more.
I believe that if used online, it can be an effective way to defuse a situation.
good point, crossy
defusing . . . yes
to means it seems to convey a sense of punishment as well, though - the person refuses to engage with you to punish you?
me*
It depends I guess, if it just means you are not going to continue arguing. But to give someone the silent treatment for days I don't agree with.
je 5/24, pls
If it's just withdrawing from a chat online, which is upsetting to you, then I don't see a problem - after all, we're mostly just names to each other; some giving more than others.
Sorry bichon, don't have it.
im just asking theoretically
Well not punishment exactly, but the quiet person does not with the problem at hand to affect others around him/her.
wish*
oooh, again, good point, crossy!
Wise man :)
je5 alt. spelling of holy war
ty, Une
Ty une.
Thanks, Une
I think for me, silence is a discipline that I desperately need to develop. I tend to dive right in and say whatever I am feeling at that moment. NOT engaging in an argument, or even a discussion, might be a good thing for me to try, until I can discern how I am really feeling about the topic at hand
ty Une
yw :-)
And me, Trif.
You are not alone, trif. My beloved often says that she believe my tongue is hinged in the middle to better enable it to flap on both ends. As I age I have learned the merits of silence in many tense situations.
Im thinking a lot about school starting up again....thinking about how I want to be this year as a staff member, as a professional....
Hoochey, koochey lady in the grid today.
I think it is critical to set intentions....
hmmmm....sukee.....?
oh! I see her!
Anyone have a clue for either i in the top left. All I need for nbt.
I pulled that one out of thin air, sukee! io6.21
