they are being used along the road edges, to keep our roads clear of danger of fire.

i understand about preserving the habitat for our native fauna but surely any sort of habitat is better than no habitat which is what we would have if a fire went through. plus after a fire there is very little fauna left to enjoy the native forests.

I must add that I live on the edge of an NWR (sandhill cranes, which have - I just learned - finally been taken off the critically endangered list because of our reserve here) and WMA (which conserves resources for wildlife) on the basic border of the swamps here, lol. Every year we have periodic management burn offs in the Fed areas to assure wildfires won't have a foothold...

I finally saw a couple of pairs of sandhill cranes this past summer while driving through some wetlands just about 2 miles north of our home here. The more mature pair were looking me eye-to-eye while I was driving; I didn't realize they were that tall! The younger pair weren't quite as tall as the other pair.
For edification: The Pascagoula River System is the last unregulated major river system in the lower 48 states... National Wildlife Reserve and Wildlife Management Area

Nef, my eldest brother is still in MI and told me that he'd seen a sandhill crane couple a few summers ago at a Lake Huron retreat. Our kids do get around, lol.

amelia, my one sister is a vet and birder. She said that they are often just seen passing through MN; but I found out that there is a small group of them that hang around our area all 3 milder seasons here.
They find their 'comfort zone' and usually adhere to that. I'm glad their numbers are increasing such that they're are broadening their horizon. Thank you for sharing that. I pass the entrance to the NWR daily so it's good to know that what they have done/are doing is not in vain.

They are much more migratory than I'd thought (back in the day). I think they're 'snow birds' and just come for the cool seasons.
