8:10 am

3rd col o - 1st name of Anne Frank's father (Holocaust memorial day is Tuesday)

8:10 am

I got it ty natasha

8:11 am

I went to the Holocaust museum once. First and last time. What a sad place.

8:12 am

I used to live 3 blocks from Yad Vashem, the memorial in Jerusalem. And my neighbors were all survivors.

8:12 am

wow

8:12 am

incredibly sad place.

8:12 am

hi phan

8:12 am

hello!

8:12 am

I've been to Yad Vashem a few times. When I left I was unable to speak

8:13 am

It's overwhelming. I've been grappling with this horror since I first learned about it at age 12. I'm 66 now and no closer to grasping it.

8:14 am

I was in Amsterdam with Mr. B [gentile, born in Germany] and his step mother [[also German]. We went to the Anne Frank house. She had no idea why I was crying

8:14 am

ny 8 clue pls/

8:14 am

?

8:15 am

lasting

8:15 am

While living in Israel in the 1980s, I sang in the Israel National Choir and we were sent to Germany 2x, both times included visits to camps - Dachau, and Bergen-Belsen. They asked us to sing in front of the crematoria. I couldn't. I broke down. Still seared in my memory.

8:15 am

sorry, my bad

8:15 am

bichon I have seen pics and was a huge anne frank fan so sad

8:16 am

Natasha I don't think I would have bene able to do it

8:17 am

Singing to affirm life in the mouth of hell was beyond me

8:17 am

(((((natasha)))))

8:17 am

aw, thanks Trif. How are you today?

8:18 am

hi trif

8:18 am

Being able to do so is a triumph

8:18 am

ny 8 clue pls?

8:19 am

Natasha, have you watched the show Hunters [it's on Amazon Prime]?

8:19 am

its a gorgeous, if muddy, day here, which helps. online church at 10, then going outside to play with my goats

8:19 am

ny + what Lipitor is

8:19 am

I started to watch it, but it was so out of true, I dropped it. The truth is bad enough.

8:20 am

ooooh thanks, bichon!

8:20 am

ty bichon

8:20 am

Playing with goats sounds divine. I do find online worship comforting if imperfectly so. Singing together is... a challenge. I hope you have a lovely service.

8:21 am

Are you watching it bichon?

8:21 am

yeah, singing is subpar at my location, but i try my best

8:22 am

Singing online is impossible... the lag turns it all into a salad

8:22 am

we LOVED Hunters, bichon! i was okay with the hyperbole - it's not a documentary, after all

8:22 am

Those videos of choirs or orchestras singing/playing together are, of course, edited to synch them.

8:22 am

we have a new, young pastor, and he is so eager and tech savvy, and it's just charming. his enthusiasm touches me

8:23 am

that's lovely!

8:23 am

Trif do you watch operas at all?

8:23 am

Al Pacino was so good at his role

8:24 am

I couldn't get through the first episode... too upsetting to watch.

8:25 am

off for breakfast before our on line service at 10 too. 16 left for later. Have a good day all!

8:25 am

My idea of a good film is The Ghost and Mrs. Muir with Rex Harrison. I'm a throwback.

8:26 am

bye phan take care

8:26 am

that is a great movie Natasha

8:27 am

The score (by Bernard Herrmann) is his best

8:27 am

Running to the farmer's market for senior hour.. bbl

8:28 am

bye natasha

8:28 am

we watched a 90's movie last night that we had missed - out of sight, with george clooney. We liked it very much! An early Soderburgh (sp?) I love how stylized his movies are

8:31 am

does anyone else find themselves surprised when they find a word, and it ends up coming from a totally different location than expected? That just happened to me - found an en6, but it didn't go on the e I thought it would!

10:30 am

10:35 am

10:35 am

also have never seen the thai canals before

10:36 am

molly please, they're sex workers in this pc world

10:36 am

i like homie.. i will start using that.. mr and mrs homie

10:36 am

and I don't get how "sex worker" is better than prostitute

10:37 am

sex workers have jobs?

10:37 am

What? Not sex professionals?

10:39 am

seriously, there's a whole movement. if anyone says prostitute or hooker or anything on a podcast, they get a million complaints from people saying it's "sex worker", so now they all say that.

10:41 am

Is the ti7.40 a weirdo?

10:41 am

it must be a funny conversation when a sexworker gets an IRS audit

10:42 am

that's my last word. struggling to see. not a lot of options based on the list.

10:42 am

h'mm ..

10:42 am

it's a photography term aloy

10:42 am

Don't forget that a high percentage of sex workers were trafficked into the "profession" and have no choice. They also don't get to keep the money; their handlers do.

10:42 am

pretty odd. metal + ****writer

10:42 am

yay, ty ru and Ata !

10:43 am

of course, a compound word

10:43 am

my dad has an old ti7 picture of his grandfather I think. it's pretty cool.

10:43 am

fireworks! off to puzzle.

10:43 am

that is fw for me too.. ended in pig sound, lol

10:44 am

oh absolutely true pastor J.. i am against prostitution actually, especially with the sex trafficking that has been an issue in recent years...but the rich like Bob KRaft just get a slap on the wrist

10:44 am

IRS audit man: $500 for bondage materials? Sex worker: Yes, work related expense

10:45 am

not with an oi4 but a whimper.. see you all next time.. ciao

10:45 am

bye aloy

10:45 am

ti7/40 is an old kind of photograph. I'm pretty sure they had those in the UK too.

10:45 am

my whole point is how can one term be better than the others?

10:45 am

The IRS isn't likely to even know about such people. All I'm gonna say; I'm not here to lecture or start anything - just a reminder that some horrible things happen to some innocent, throw-away people for the benefit of creeps.

10:46 am

no arguments from me here pJ

10:46 am

this is very true

10:46 am

I understood your point Carla. I didn't think it was any comment on the profession.

10:47 am

I wasn't even commenting on people that willingly or unwillingly do sex work, I just don't understand how that term is better.

10:47 am

I was talking about Nevada in general when making the joke

10:48 am

old terms accrue negative connotation, so people create new terms to avoid that connotation

10:49 am

and to "increase self worth"

10:49 am

"colored" was acceptable when the NAACP was created, obviously, but now, that would be unacceptable to say

10:49 am

thanks for understanding me molly, obviously sex trafficking is horrible and I would never make light of that.

10:50 am

(I'm not judging anyone here; just trying to honor those who've been pulled into the situation by offering a reminder.)

10:51 am

important, PJ

10:52 am

Yeah, but Hursh, I don't see any less of a negative connotation in sex worker.

10:53 am

well, not everyone is going to see every term the same way, that's inevitable

10:53 am

I think that was the original point.

10:54 am

Good morning. I see we are talking about sex workers this morning. You just never know what you might stumble upon here.

10:54 am

like lately everyone hates the word "moist" for how it sounds or something, and i don't get it. i do not mind the word "moist". idiosyncrasies abound.

10:55 am

(betty crocker just turned over in her grave)

10:55 am

:D

10:56 am

i also knew a gal who really hated the word "smoothie", for reasons that could not be pinpointed.

10:56 am

I do really dislike the word moist

10:57 am

whereas i dislike the word "diva"

10:58 am

me too

10:59 am

why do you not like the word moist?

11:01 am

it just sounds icky

11:01 am

i was doing a crossword this morning and i had a thing i do not understand. the clue was "The dickens" and the answer was "hail columbia". how do those things relate, does anyone know?

11:02 am

I'm trying to think of a word I don't like. I have phrases I don't like, because they are over used (like reach out) but no specific word. Oh, also "love me some". Again, over used.

11:04 am

no idea!

11:04 am

i think I am more than a little bothered by the new terms IMMA and Hella

11:05 am

Help please? One word left st6 (the final one)

11:05 am

and JELLY

11:05 am

see i kind of enjoy imma

11:05 am

i only have half the S words but so far my last one of those describes something that smells bad

11:05 am

I would add "totes" to Ru's list.

11:05 am

jumping into to pigpens gramma you'd be st6

11:06 am

lol that is funny ruru cause that would apply to the one i clued as well :D

11:06 am

I'm not familiar with imma and hella. What do they mean?

11:07 am

imma means "i'm going to"

11:07 am

hella is "hell of a"

11:07 am

hella means good i think

11:07 am

Fireworks! Thanks for that clue.

11:08 am

Are those really words or just a slang form ?

11:08 am

define "really"

11:08 am

new slang from younger people .. .even more offensive when older people use them and try to pretend they're young

11:09 am

shakespeare made up a lot of words. if you make up words and people use them, in some sense they are real words, even if not in the dictionary.

11:11 am

They just sound lazy to me. How hard is it to say hell of a instead of hella?

11:11 am

they're just fun things. some famous person says something or puts it in a song and it seems cute and catches on.

11:12 am

To each their own

11:12 am

<agrees with gramma and it's not cute to me

11:12 am

i object to language changes that sacrifice clarity, but am usually more ok with other changes.

11:13 am

i had a big grammar fight with people on reddit the other day about the use of "they" as a singular pronoun. because that sacrifices clarity. it's bad enough we have "you" for both singular and plural, now we've got another one!

11:13 am

Anybody want a clue before I take off?

11:13 am

Hursh, are YOU the grammar police on reddit???

11:13 am

sometimes, lol

11:14 am

that's the point hursh.. these kids who didn't pay much attention in school are working for newspapers and on-line news and they can't spell, they don't use proper english or they can't seem to edit a proper sentence.

11:14 am

i mean, it was on a post where someone said that we ought to have a third person singular other than it, one that can be used for people

11:14 am

Imma, hella and jelly grate on my nerves. So does def.

11:14 am

Ooo, I betcha the fights are epic. Reddit is no holds barred!

11:14 am

so it was appropriately topical

11:14 am

The thing that annoys me is when people say I've got. You already said I have so why say I have got?

11:15 am

Those kids that Ru mentioned, can't put together a decent resume either.

11:15 am

omg.. that too molly you wouldn't believe the resumes we've gotten in our business. it's unbelievable

11:16 am

Lately, any resume I review from someone under thirty is pathetic.

11:17 am

Because of all the social media connections and the technology used to access them, the language is changing right before our eyes. Faster than any other period in history. (From reddit - “fight me”)

11:17 am

i refuse to believe that teaching has declined, but that education is lacking nowadays due to huge class size, and lack of materials etc

11:18 am

i was called a hypocrite in that discussion for saying i was in favor of adopting "y'all" for second person plural, but objecting to "they" as a singular. "picking and choosing". but when you have a principle, such as clarity, that guides what you pick and choose, that is not hypocritical!

11:18 am

I like seeing the usages change and the mashed up words, BUT I also appreciate correct grammar, structured sentences, and appropriate words. I’ve seen resumes that fried my eyeballs...

11:18 am

See you all tomorrow.

11:18 am

(wonders how Hurshy feels about Ain't)

11:19 am

Greetings, all. Ah, I have stumbled into a grammer debate. Juicy!

11:19 am

bye gramma

11:19 am

i'm ok with ain't. more so in some contexts than others. :)

11:19 am

Good morning, Judi

11:19 am

Aw, hursh, stick to your principles!!!

11:20 am

Well, when it has become common usage to type U instead of you, the whole word has gone to collective hell in terms of proper language usage.

11:20 am

LOL, hursh ain’t playin’..

11:20 am

I have come to really appreciate "y'all" as a very useful contraction. I use it all the time now (even though I am a yankee).

11:21 am

i'm often torn between liking things to be "correct" and recognizing that until dictionaries came along, which is quite recent, there was no standardized spelling. people even spelled their names different ways on different days, nobody seemed to care. Jane Austen would write "chuse" not "choose", and now that doesn't pass spell check.

11:22 am

A lot of these shortcuts (U for you, Y for why, WYA for where you at) started with texting on T9 phones, ones that you had to hit the numbers several times to get the letters you wanted.

11:23 am

chuse for jane Austen are what she walked in hursh

11:23 am

But, I'm with y'all on the horrible decline of grammar in general. In addition to large class size, lack of materials, I would throw in incidental / absentee parenting. Many of us here are of a common age where our parents read to us and helped us with our homework. Now, teachers and schools are expected to practically raise children.

11:23 am

that and probably too much screen time, lack of healthy air, their brains are messed up

11:23 am

LOL, ruru, chuse...

11:24 am

I would say it's important to chuse your food thoroughly.

11:25 am

well, anyway, i try to save my rage for things that sacrifice communicative clarity

11:26 am

if you make up a new word and it is clear to people, great. i do it myself. :)

11:27 am

does anyone have the N in the second column?

11:27 am

ny8

11:28 am

welllllll that would explain why i couldn't find it

11:28 am

thanks ru

11:30 am

11:32 am

11:56 am

Hubby wants to drag me out to the forest today, so I better throw some laudry in now. See y'all tomorrow! *POOF*

11:59 am

Weird news in my state. School closings have been extended until May 15. Why they didn't just bag the whole year, I don't know. On the other side of things, people are protesting the continuation of social distancing. As in, public protests with people side by side, carrying signs and complaining. People can only go without income for so long.

12:00 pm

matty: a metal + what you do on a computer keyboard

12:07 pm

Thank you!

12:35 pm

*Wondering why Judi is getting dragged out to the forest

12:36 pm

to enjoy nature, would be my surmise

12:48 pm

help with the lone N please?

12:50 pm

gotta run - will get it later.

1:51 pm

Oh, to enjoy nature? I was hoping it was something a little more fun than that.

1:59 pm

I gotta object. Enable won't take oaty, which describes the bread I am making right now, or oaky, which describes chardonnay my husband won't drink.

2:03 pm

hello

2:04 pm

2:15 pm

I know I"m late to the grammar party. But, I gotta say, "y'all" is redundant. If I say YOU, why do I need to say "ALL?"

2:53 pm

You would have to have grown up in Southern States to know the importance of y'all

2:53 pm

And you all is a common phrase for those who don't say y'all

2:55 pm

Along with “How Ya Mom And Dem?”

2:55 pm

I am from the north of England and I knew what it meant.

2:56 pm

And "where y'all at" which is a Louisiana phrase.

2:57 pm

And youse...Jersey lingo

2:57 pm

I supposed you could argue that it is second person plural, while "you" is second person singular?

2:59 pm

Or you could just recognize that it is a regional saying like Rocky Mountain Oysters is in Montana

3:00 pm

Or stroopwafel

3:01 pm

I have never heard "stroopwafel."

3:01 pm

it's a cookie sort of a thing

3:02 pm

from sweden i believe

3:03 pm

I looked them up. They sound yummy.

3:03 pm

does the ta7 build off the 6?

3:04 pm

no

3:04 pm

origami would like to be ta7 stroopwafels right now

3:04 pm

:D

3:06 pm

hi all!

3:06 pm

Hi jmc

3:07 pm

hi jmc

3:07 pm

I have a ta5 stroopwafel, hm

3:07 pm

stroopwafel? I will have to look that up

3:07 pm

it is the ending of several of today's long words

3:08 pm

gotit

3:08 pm

ah! IC!

3:09 pm

Well it's 2:00, time to get out of my jammies. Said no one on Quarantine. Ever.

3:09 pm

haha I get dressed first thing or I will forget!

3:10 pm

I've started putting on daytime clothes again. Otherwise, I just want to go back to beed and sleep.

3:10 pm

*bed

3:10 pm

found an ermine

3:11 pm

How long have y'all been in lockdown?

3:12 pm

My state issued the order on March 17.

3:14 pm

Officially March 30 but gathering of more than a few people since March 13. So restaurants were closed then.

3:14 pm

You people who can stay in pajamas all day are very fortunate. I would love to have weeks like that.

3:14 pm

It gets old after a while, Molly.

3:15 pm

I just wish people would quit making so much bread and hoarding all the yeast.

3:16 pm

it is a choice to an extent. I have been mostly self employed for 40 years so to an extent this is not new. But the lack of being able to interact directly is

3:16 pm

And whatever else they are baking because flour is hard to come by too.

3:17 pm

Indeed, Molly. I can't get flour here. I have only whole wheat left, which I do like. But since there is no yeast, I sourdough starter and whole wheat sourdough is pretty dense.

3:17 pm

*I made sourdough ...

3:20 pm

Really, how much bread can one make while they are staying home in their pajamas, while being paid for that?

3:21 pm

I can't imagine what people are doing with it all.

3:21 pm

No disrespect to all the people who are not getting paid during all this and are running our of ways to support themselves and their families.

3:22 pm

I imagine eating it. Since the only bread I can find at the store has 3 grams of sugar in every serving I can't eat that. On the other hand I am a terrible baker.

3:22 pm

I really feel for those folks without income.

3:23 pm

Weird, I have had no trouble finding bread. My grocery store is pretty well stocked on that.

3:23 pm

to avoid shopping I have been using up my larder and freezer.

3:24 pm

I feel for the people who are give no choice but to work for minimum wage and risk their lives and their familes so people can buy beer

3:24 pm

I really wish I had a chest freezer. I could really use one right now.

3:24 pm

It is going to get ugly pretty soon if this keeps up. People can't just stay home and not have income for too much longer. Hence, the protests in several states.

3:24 pm

I don't have a chest, just part of my fridge

3:25 pm

apparently one of the biggest complaints at Michigan was that they couldn't get their hair done

3:25 pm

I just got some yeast. I've been making sourdough bread. It saves a trip to the store. Also because I'm bored. I'm not worried about money since I'm pretty much living on Social Security anyway. Two of my three jobs are still continuing albeit more difficult since I have to work from home. My music jobs are all gone.

3:26 pm

I am glad you have some income and jobs, harpjane. Both those things make it easier

3:27 pm

I hope they let hairdressers and barbers go back to work, with strict guidance and provisions. I also would like to see small "non-essential" stores, like local clothing boutiques, open up. So people don't have to go to the big box stores like WalMart for clothing.

3:27 pm

I was without paying work until last Monday but there is always something for me to do. I organized spme people to send notes to Florida Babbler Nurse's (sorry blanking on her babble name) medical center

3:28 pm

Yes, I'm basically retired but I think I would feel it in a few months if I don't have my church and other music jobs.

3:29 pm

small stores in dc can sell on line or by phone. I am buying primarily local things. Had a local store send "cookie dough" to my great niece and nephew in Brookiyn.

3:31 pm

We are going to be a scraggly, unkempt bunch with bad roots and grey hair if the salons stay closed much longer.

3:32 pm

Not to mention all the bad nails, toe and finger.

3:32 pm

I have never appreciated being low maintenance as much as I do now. Although, I really needed a haircut before this all started.

3:32 pm

Julia Louis-Dreyfus said we should all a grey drab greying hair was chic!

3:33 pm

I had just gotten into the habit of getting my hair cut and died two years ago. . . it wasnt too hard to go back to the getting it cut every two years whether it needs it or not.

3:34 pm

*all agree that grey"

3:34 pm

I cut my own hair, and luckily, I just got color before this mess started. I am not a fan of grey hair for me.

3:35 pm

That's pretty brave, Molly. I shudder to think what I would look like if I cut my own hair.

3:35 pm

meh mine won't be completely grey for another ten years. I have a decade of dishwater blond lurking before me.

3:35 pm

Some women I know are using this as an ideal time to find out what color their actual hair is!

3:36 pm

My hair is neither light brown or gray. It has just lost all color.

3:36 pm

haha that would be my s-i-l

3:39 pm

okay it was fun. I am off to stand on my front porch and sing happy birthday to my across the street neighbor. bye all

3:39 pm

61 left. poof
