gosh yeah that is essential when you live with others. When me and my partner lived with housemates it was the worst experience of my life.

Just read a news report on that campus shooting, and it said that it was the worst campus shooting since Charles Whitman went to top of the tower in the middle of the University of Texas campus in Austin, Texas, on Aug 1, 1966, and opened fire on people 27 stories below. He killed 15 people, including his mother and wife the night before, and wounded 31 others.

It's not simply the garbage on television... it's music, "art", live spiels of race-hatred, and Fiber's idea of community isolation... fearing those who are "different"... hating others for being rich or poor... this is a socialogical and emotional dichotomy that I cannot solve...

I would agree that our youth have become numb to voilence, but it's not just from tv, movies or video games... it's everywhere. I would like to point out that some 90% (I don't have the article in front of me, but the statistic was really high) of the kids that have commited these atrocities were on some form of medication, side effects included depression.
Niamh... and the meds contribute to the exacerbation of symptoms too!
There is just so much hurt in this world! Without being on my religious soapbox, I wish we could all find peace in a higher power (which ever God we worship - Judeo-Chistian, Muslim, Buddhist, etc.). Most faiths are love-filling and peace seeking. Perhaps that's what we all need.

I think that accountablity has been lost. The US courts let people get away with too much and everyone has an escape goat. That in itself creates anger. If it's not your fault that you are so miserable, then you get mad at whoever you perceive to be at fault.
movieman, my daughter and her husband have made that decision, mostly based on the climate change projections --- whether or not it's human caused, there's no question that serious stuff is happening. And also the nuclear fears. They say they don't want a child to be raised in what they see as 'end times'.
There are plenty of folks out there who are not religions yet are thoughtful, considerate, etc. Unfortunately, there are also many who use their religion as justification for things they do, including irrational acts of hate, etc. And so many people who refuse to take responsibility for their actions. And parents who refuse to take responsibility for their children--raising them, teaching them, etc., expecting schools to do their work for them. I could go on, as I'm sure you all could as well.
I have seen enough love and support in this little chatline to not abandon hope for the world... but we can't be in the minority, can we? Can we?
No scarlet, my belief is the vast majority of human hearts are like us... I wish my daughter felt more hope.

If we allow our children to grow up surrounded by violence on TV, in movie theatres and in reading material without appropriate discussion and supervision, what can we expect? Even what they see on the news happens so often that to them it is commonplace. I think the movie industry needs to be censored if they won't do it themselves and that the media should spend as much time reporting the consequences as they do the violence. yes - it can go up - we are on a company group health plan for regular health and dental - private dental and auto, homeowners, life, and flood insurance
