hope so too. It is the 25+ years long concierge of her school, it is probably overloaded with people from school too.
what does a concierge do at a school? (sorry to ask at this delicate time)
not so delicate for me, darling, it is very sad, but I didn't know him very well. This man did everything to keep the building running, all papers ready, all supplies going, all logistics, etc etc etc. He spent most of his time at school and he is missed sorely by kids and personel.
you know the type, kind of central figure in the whole practical running of the school.

he died of lung cancer, has been really ill for about a year now, but still did odd jobs on his sickbed for the school.
the other name is a janitor, but it isn't used anymore.
started as helping parent, stayed on as volunteer and soon became the school engineer. I think it is wonderful, if you have to go, to be so universally loved and appreciated and missed as this man is.
wow that the kids went to his funeral!
janitor I know, the word I mean, but I thought it only applied to someone in a building with rentals or something.
tim is on school camp, he doesn't even know yet, didn't think it necessary to spoil his week there. But I think a lot of kids and parents are there now. He was that kind of person.
and concierge only applies to hotel doormen here! But we digress... is amazing that the kids were invited to his funeral, very sweet
he asked to be driven past the school on his last ride. Yes, the words are a digression, but an appreciated one :) Concierge for hotels, janitors out of use, school (or, I guess, building) engineer for what I meant.
children are very much discouraged from attending funerals here... it is considered 'uncouth' there have been people from the school who have passed, but the children don't get told till after the funeral

His being ill and his dieing, and the whole issue of organ donorship etc (related to his illness) has been talked about in all classes, each on their own level of understanding. There has been room for mourning and questions and they all made lovely things for him while he was ill. And last week they made a very special book that is given to his wife now.

no, not young. Too young to die like this, of course, but he was in his early 60s.

illness and dying are almost taboo here... it isn't discussed unless you are family or very close friends. weird, but it is how it is

there are good reasons to be found for both approaches, I think, mrP. Personally I am glad it is not a taboo he4 anymore. The school has been very careful and thoughtful about the whole painful affair and all kids have had the chance to mourn and be comforted and be a comfort to others.

my father believed that women and children were taboo at funerals but my mother in law insisted i went to her fathers and i was glad i went at the age of about 30 for the first time

I was 10, going on 11 when my beloved grandmother died. I knew she was very sick, but my parents didn't think I should go to the funeral. Mom told me afterwards that she had died. I really think I was mature enough and was always sorry I hadn't been able to go
mr pres is right about attitudes here to children at funerals but it is getting more tolerated - moving with the times
