Spotted Dick ------------------------------------- -------------------------------------- ----- 2 oz plain flour 1 tsp baking powder 1/2 teaspoon mixed spice pinch of salt 2 oz shredded suet 1 oz white or brown sugar 4 oz currants 2 oz fresh breadcrumbs 1 egg, beaten 4-5 tbsp milk Butter a 1.5 pint pudding basin. Sift the flour, baking powder, spice and salt into a mixing bowl and mix in the suet, sugar, fruit and bread- crumbs. Stir in the egg and sufficient milk to produce a soft consistency that drops off the spoon in 5 seconds. Turn the mixture into the pudding basin, which should be two-thirds full. Cover with greased foil or a snap-on lid (the plastic container from a 2 lb Christmas pudding is worth saving for this purpose.) Steam for 2 to 2.5 hours. When cooked, remove the cover and allow the pudding to shrink slightly, then cover the basin with a hot serving plate, hold it firmly and invert. Lift off the basin to leave the pudding on the plate. Serve hot with custard.

Yes, West. We managed to jag two race meetings back to back at Phillip Island so only one trip to do both. The first meeting is an Historic outing so Adam will be riding bikes from the 1970's. He has already won a few historic championships.

Just hubby and I will be driving there but son and daughter will come back with us. They try to miss as little work as possible so fly in. The drive takes about 40 - 44 hours.

I work in the Coroners Service here. Every working day, I receive phone calls from people bereaved by suicide. If only the deceased could have seen the total and utter devastation caused by their actions, I think they would rethink.

many times, i think, people simply are so caught up in their own pain that they don't realize they are likely to hurt others by suicide. sometimes they even believe their loved ones will genuinely be better off if they are gone.
That is the problem, they dont have that reaoning power when they are so down

Absolutely. A young doctor here took her own life, convinced that her work was useless, that she had no friends. The church was full to overflowing with her friends and family, devastated that they hadn't been able to help. Her work wasn't useless, she had many friends, she just couldn't see it.

You're right, it was a tragedy. Her life hadn't been without pain or hardship etc, but she hadn't cried out for help until it was too late.
it makes ME angry how friends will show up to a funeral but not make the effort to keep up with a person who's living, and who they perhaps even know has depression.
As someone who has lost people I love to suicide, I understand the anger and sense of betrayal the living have toward people who decide to end lives that have become little more than synonyms for pain. It's natural. But what is left when that anger dies but empathy? What other response can there be to imagine pain so profound that the sufferer finds only death an escape from it?
oooh, that reminds me - if you see anyone who asks you if I am a surgeon, say "yes!" I wore one of my dad's scrub shirts out yesterday, and primo and i ended up at a yard sale, unexpectedly. I had no cash on me, but the guy let me write a check "since I was a doctor, and surely good for the money"....tee hee!
In this case, these were friends who were closely involved with her life, but she had masked her problems very cleverly.
I dread my phone ringing in work. I know that at the other end of it is going to be somebody so bewildered, so hurt, so utterly grief-stricken, that often they are beyond words. I understand what you are saying Melissamay, but, when you have to deal with the immediate consequences of a suicide, its hard to make sense of it.
Haz, that is one thing about Babble, at least it is a forum where people like Zooz for instance can vent and maybe it saved his life
I often wonder how many suicides never meant to go thru with it, only to signal they needed help, only to succeed a bit too well

i use the nook and the wife uses sony
the nook and the sony are both "better sharers" in terms of file types they use. when you download ebooks from amazon they're generally in a special kindle-y format. as opposed to the e-pub ones.

Thanks ... but while I can really make it sound miserable and challenging and brave ... there were some many people in the oncology ward who were so much more challenged than me that I can't take too much credit ... you don't know how good you've got it until you watch a woman in the chair next to you taking chemotherapy while her eight and nine year old kids are playing on the floor around you and you know that she's not going to make it ...

I ca4/5 believe I finished the grid today.Even though it was not a gi 5/14 grid, it was tough.I was going to pa 4/5 on doing a story today, but couldn't resist. So here is a story for you to sc 4/5 for clues. My sister ra 4/6 me on the phone & asked if I could babysit. So now I am at the ca4/5 of my sister's. She's paying me ca 4/6 to babysit tomorrow. (however, if you want to know a few of the not-so-good things, I could share; but not now)
most of the parents i know share the good things about their children. they also share their trials, and are relived to know they aren't alone.
My friends nephew is a brat and that is due to bad parenting. Sorry but that is the way I feel.

m9 - I don't know where you've been listening but that is not true! And apparently, unlike you, most parents don't want to spend 100% of their time with children. They like talking to grown-ups, and going to the store alone and taking a bath without worrying about a kid playing with matches.
that's how it is with my friends too. but there's a social thing going on... for example.. When I was managing retail.. i had SO many people I didn't know well tell me how HORRIBLE it was going to be when I had two teenagers.

M9---I see that a lot in the parents of the teens I work with in youth ministry. They have just hit those years and the natural separation problems are really overwhelming them. I take the time to talk up their teen; I mostly only see the good parts anyway!
