I make "killer" baked beans. One little secret is to gently boil the beans with a little baking soda (after soaking all night of course ) it sweetens them and takes away the sharp taste of some beans.

DFM, much of the Virginia Government closes 24 Dec-1 january inclusive, with only a few svcs like police, fire, vital stats, and DMV open in that week.

i've been researching older recipes for it to see if Dutch-process cocoa might have been used back when
i hate to disagree, but that is why there is chocolate and vanilla. I love red velvet cake - if it is made right
I tasted the one Tom made from his Aunt Louetta's recipe, it was decent, but still did not taste good to me. It was not totally disgusting, but enough of the red food color taste was there that yuck.

Doctor said to cut back 10-15% of sugar, but I decided to cut out all sugar -- no candy, no deserts, and Splenda in my tea. But, after 15 months, it's not a problem, except when people insist you should try their baked goods.

It's good. We have a very very low key Christmas. Some people think we are sad creatures! We do put up a tree, and have a traditional lunch, but we don't give or receive presents and it takes all the pressure off. We make it a little bit special but not so I am up till 2am with preparations - been there, done that. We are just happy to be here in our lovely home with enough food and enough warmth and each other.

Sue, I watched the beginning of "Jesus Of Nazareth" last night. I am always struck by the simplicity of the Nativity story. And in awe of a woman who could not only ride around on a donkey nine months pregnant, but then give birth in a dirty stable. The symbolism abounds.

my parents sold a house there in 1980 for $85,000 - to buy that house today would cost about $400,000 or more

Hmmm. Christmas in hospital is tough. And I think the efforts made by staff to make it festive (tinsel on IV stands etc) can be counter productive. But everybody means well, and what can you do? Just go with the flow, and count your blessings!

NB have your friends come for you with a sled you can sit on and they can pull you home when you get tired. It would be such a great sight
that's nice and close. Have you been taking walks through the building then? You know a mile when you've been ill is a lot further than a mile when you are well

I know it would cheer me up to see big kids making the best of the snow in a city
and a mile is a lot farther when you have been laid up for a while....
even half a mile is exhausting in slushy snow NB, walking will be exhausting, i have thighs like a cross country skier now, walking 2 miles to my mums every day and walking back
I guess...and I haven't walked in about two months. Then again, how much does snow really stick in london?
it doesn't matter how deep NB, it will really weigh your feet down, maybe a cab would be better, even walking up a flight of stairs will wear you out
It's not the sticking (and apparently more this year than most), but the sliding, Nancy Boy... if you haven't actually been walking a LOT around the building, I wouldn't try it.
I would worry about slipping.
The worst would be if you got partway home and then needed a ride and couldn't find a cab.
if you do too much now when you are weak and vulnerable you may end up back in hospital

we had a half mile walk up to our friends and back and have had a reasonabley very large dinner and lots of wine - it was very cold walking back
