when we found "boo" i checked out kijiji, and the humane society..i called all local vets to see if anyone was missing a black oriental polydactyl kitten...no one replied....no one was looking so she stayed with us....

we had a sanguine peach tree for 3 years when we first came. It hasd about 100 peaches the 3rd year and then died. Gave its all, I guess

They don't have to say what the appointment was for, mrp -- just that she was seen (at least that is how it is in the U.S.) -- they are trying to discourage parents being negligent and just not getting the kids up in time to get to school. Our children have some "unexcused" absences in their school records -- once because the buses couldn't get to our house because of ice on the roads and we couldn't get out -- but the school in town didn't accept that as a valid reason
if you didn't have one, mab, they counted every day out as a separate absence; 10 or more and the kid failed for the semester.

The inflexibility is a very real issue -- but the larger the population the more difficult it seems to be to be flexible. People tend to view "fair" as meaning identical rather than equitable.

well people want schools to have the ability to be flexible and provide for all kinds of students and life situations but they don't want to pay the taxes to pay for it

in our K-8 district I had few complaints (some were big enough that I homeschooled for a while...) but I HATED the high school that I and my children had to attend that was in the town.

If it's legal one place to just write a note, then I would think it is legal another place, but again I know the laws where I live and teach, not yours. I just know how frustrating it is when those attendance rules are too inflexible.

Gifted programs were suggested for my oldest, but I opted out of that. He is (and was) very smart, but needed the social skills of mainstream.
Well, he was a kid that had a lot handed to him in life, and the easy way out was very appealing. (blame his grandfather).

That's the reason I kept my oldest in mainstream JMC. I didn't want him surrounded by a social network of other gifted kids that didn't represent the world he needed to learn to live in.

the girl I refer to is keen to social justice, etc., but I think that's mostly her mom's influence

My gifted kid really benefited. She's 2 years ahead in math and science and rocked her PSAT's. If I can keep her from thinking it's "uncool" to be smart, we might just make it through!
