no cardinals in France; but we have verdiers (green finches), pinsons, and sparrows naturally. Husband feeds them all twice a day
and I get a big kick out of the big woodpeckers that assault my suet cages, they're hooked to the side of the window, and it sounds like someone knocking on the door.

I've only seen 3 wqoodpeckers since we've been here and when we tried to put up suet with seeds in nets, the crows carried them away
2 of the woodpeckers were big and green with red on their heads and the other was regular black, white and red

I love finches, so dainty. we have the gold ones. Wow, crows - we have some once in a while, but they don't seem interested in the stuff that's too near the house. They like the corn I put out for the deer.
no deer here either, except in the cliffs above us. One of my friends had all her roses eaten by roe deer during the summer, but I've never seen one
but - no deer so far this year, we have a dog out there now, they don't care for his company.

A long-legged border collie mix. He's a good boy, Emmett. Kind of large.
for a little while in the fall, we had 30 -odd sheep in the field above us, cutting the grass, and I got to see border collies at work. They are wonderful dogs
I had to bring him into the closed-in porch for part of last winter, (bitter cold for a few weeks) he does okay there, but has no house manners, really.
He should have a farm and some work to do, he likes to run. I hate having to keep him tied up.
we have non-working, lazy dogs, but they have massive barks, so are good watch dogs
and big!
He jumped out of the kennel easily when we tried him there, so needs the cable tie-out.
We have a little indoor dog who does all our door-answering barking for us.

That is probably better than reading an audio book or listening to an e-book.
I like ebooks, because I can make the font big enough to see; and I like audio books because they don't hurt my head/eyes at all.

lol,mab,i have worn the tape so badly on some cassettes,that you can hear the reverse ghost sound of the other side of the tape;(
we really have nothing in the u.s. like the bbc. like bbc 4, which has radio plays, etc.

i have a rather elderly boom box on which to play my CDs - maybe it's the machine that's delicate.
When my daughter worked in a video store, they had a machine to recoat them which fixed up minor scratches.

my personal experience is you find a job and then learn the skill but that may no longer be true in these difficult times
