she feels a lot of pressure, but that is all her. Neither we nor school is pressuring her. I think she is learning a very important lesson now... to listen to her body and to let go of perfectionism. She is so smart, she always has super grades. Now she must learn that average grades are ok if you are not feeling well.
very true, sprite -- and people know the difference between someone who can't ever and someone who is temporarily out of their normal patterns. Learning to listen to our bodies is hard (as with me today not using the crutches...) but important.
she got ill in November. So the Xmas break was part of the sick time... she should be ok with catching up without too much effort. And for now, no catching up allowed. Just building up to a full roster is enough.

oh I know! I am not very good at it either. But as long as she is getting better, I am content. I have been a very worried mum.
the school is awesome. They told her very clear that her job was to get better. That she will go to the next class (3rd) for VWO (highest level) even if her grades don't show that at the end of the year. As long as she is reasonably current with all the information.

the motto of the school is: "because you want more". They really live by it. They set the goals high, but they also take into consideration that they work with adolescents and that their growing up is a lot more than just schoolwork.

indeed it is, sprite. Was reading in the last October National Geographic about some of the latest neurology done on teen brains. They are nearly a different species. *sigh* A less put-together species.
my husband and I took a course about teenager brains and behaviour. And we are still glad we did. It is so good to know how things work for them (or not!). They simply cannot consider any longterm consequences. And sometimes they just DO something, without any thought.

It's actually oldish news, but it was a well-written article. Comes down to trying to scaffold their environment so they can test boundaries and their abilities without being placed too much in danger. But it's hard to judge what is enough and what is too much sometimes, especially since what is right for some (or even most) is not right for all.

yes, he did. Got here late because he rescued stidkid #1. I have to have another talk with Tom about letting the kid learn to arrange his own transportation. People are being so understanding about how hard it is to get around without an automobile. The kid has a bicycle, there are buses that take him with a half mile of most things, and if he can walk 16 miles through snow more than a foot deep in the middle of the night he can bloody well ride a bicycle in the rain when it is well above 40 F. *folds mama arms in a huff*

sprite, I have terrible insomnia most nights. I keep my ipad with earplugs near the bed and listen to old time radio plays when I can't sleep. There is just enough to jolt my brain out of the bad waves and distract them into making pictures... so I sleep again.
