As I recall from way back in The Psychology of Sport...it's a desire to push one's self further than others do.
It sort of confuses me that the women and men inweight lifting and also discus look like they are actually out of shape.
I think they may need to be big to do the things they do, but...they look flabby. I wonder if it is the TV.
If a mosque ever open in my town (which is pretty unlikely), I will organize a bunch of Christians and Jews and Buddhists to form a prayer wall around it, with the idea that if someone wants to go after the Moslems they'll have to take out a few folks of their own faith first! I think I might be a little bit addicted to the Olympics. I have always loved it and watched loads of it since I was 16, but as this is home I am watching even more of it. Honestly no one wants to go to work because it interrupts our viewing :)

Katie, he is devestated. He worked like a dog to come back (We had the same surgery). I see him all the time, he does not go out, he is not a showy guy, he just runs and works hard...
I feel bad for all those who did not get medals. they work so very hard
But...he was not the best on that day...and I feel he still represented the US well.
it's awful. We had a silver medal winner sobbing about letting people down, it was awful. luckily he feels better today and is proud of his silver

I don't know dose -- I don't follow that sport. But I think it's pretty good, because that is a school that is in the tops of many sports.
And that sounds reasonable, to me -- Kids need to know that they have actually earned their grades, and perhaps this will spur her to more responsible scholarship (not holding my breath though)

In this country, so often tribes were herded to locations that were inadequate to meet their needs, or not part of their homelands. And then they made the children leave their families and not speak their language -- not even their true names. It was shameful. I am glad that our local people at least are reclaiming their language and culture. We have enjoyed seeing the local people do better financially now that they have the casino, originally a number of different villages were crammed onto a single island that didn't even have fresh water on it. Shameful.
