Hi there, rose!!!
I'm so glad to be back with my peeps. I just didn't feel right with the one I had.
How are you feeling, rose?
sorry, peach, was off in emails. going well. today a hydrotherapy day, so a little sorer than usual.
I'm really glad that you are doing well......sometimes we tend to over-do and the pain kicks up. But you are really sticking to your therapy....proud of you.
thanx peach. also had my first post-op review appointment today.
And the doctor was pleased with your progress?
surgeon was gob-smacked. as i walked into the room, he said" where's the rest of you? ". i have lost 32kgs, that's about 70.4lbs.
OMG! That's awesome, girl.
he also measured the degree of flexion i have...110 degrees...most patients don't achieve that for 3-4 months, and i am 7 weeks.
You have the "will" to hurry up, don't you?
iif i may say so...i'm chuffed with me! lol. it's been had yakka, have cried as i did my exercises at times, but to get results i knew i had to stick with the program.
* hard *
I'm sure it was.
so now, i'm looking at a return to work in 3 weeks. just a little more work to do. like squats. i can get down ok, but omg, getting up is .....very painful. and going up and down a flight of stairs, another area i need to work on.
please can someone clue the 8 and 10
I will "send you energy....it's like praying.
* smiling at you * thanx dear friend. need the energy.

Hello
tks GG
Yw
thanks gg
hi guys, can I have a quick rant, because I don't want to do it to hubby or son
feel free chrissie
I was due to go into hospital 10am today for op - waited a month and now they say don't come in till 12.30
they must have known all along that they didn't want me in at 10 so why did they put 10 on the letter
that prob means something more urgent has bumped you donw the list
no, this is bowel cancer op - have waited a month cos the surgeon had no earlier theatre slots
I know that my mum was due to go in but they fphoned to delay because there wasnt a bed in ICU
I'm in today for the prep and to meet the aneasthetist
there was no mention of a delay for the bed, just they do not need to start prepping me till lunch time.
phew, feel better now, thanks
I hope it all goes well - when is the actual op?
I love your photo of the ele
tomorrow for the op
Will be back later - must go and sort out my foot again - huge blisters yeuch
I love my ele too:)
Yes, good luck, Chrissie
ty both
Defo good luck for tomorrow - will think of you
going back to smile serenely at family now ;) bye
Bye Chrissie
hello
s anybody still here?
... morning ruby ... how goes it today? ...
hello dose our weather is gorgeous and there are many lovely, curly (coeur de boeuf?) tomatoes and more blackberries than I can pick
as for the rest, I'm still running a clinic here - medsa for everybody!
... sounds good ... must admit I can only grow weeds ... but that's because I just don't have the time or inclination to do the work of growing something else
... just don't mix 'em up ...
I do as little as I can, but once the tomatoes are in (the sometime gardener/handyman does that part), then all I have to do is water and pick. The blackberries take care of themselves.
and I take care of the flowers and herbs on the deck and the sunflowers that God planted to cheer me up
... I cut down some bushes in the back last year and meant to put in some blueberry bushes but didn't get around to it ... so much for anti-oxidants
happily, they have blueberries all year round at thre veg store
... but my mother was a gardener ... fifteen or sixteen hours a day ... and I learned to really dislike it .. have never been able to shake it ...
this is my first garden, very carefully designed and beautiful, but I can't do as much work as it needs, so the weeds tend to take over the flower beds
morning all,one of the joys of growing fruit is at least it is ripe when you pick it not like supermarket hard never ripen before going rotten.
the roses are easy, though, and I have fabulous globe thistles which reproduce and fill in the blank spots
hello ron. I don't eat tomatoes all year (husband doesn't know the diff) until they ripen in my garden and then I eat them warm
... yes ... that's my difficulty ... I lose interest after two days ... and never get it quite finished ...
and I can't see paying several dollars for a little plastic thingie of blackberries or raspberries when, once they're established, they are so easy to grow
and I make red currant jelly every year, a lot of work, but wonderful come January
i`ve stopped growing tomatoes as we have the largest greenhouses in europe just a few miles away so they are cheap.
... that was my sense ... ... I was just too busy this past spring ... ... maybe next year
the tomatoes in stores here must be picked when green, because they are watery and tasteless. The garden ones -- mmmm
i have peach,apricot,greengage,crabapple,mulb erry, bullace,and a walnut tree.
I would love to have a mulberry, but they don't seem to grow them here (too far north or what?)
but I have a gorgeous fig that tries to fruit twice a year but not always successfully
we had a sanguine peach which was tiny, had about 300 fruits one year and then gave up the ghost
the apricot died
this year, no plums at all (mirabelle and purple), but that depends on local weather in this valley
I am in kent 21 miles from France,so mulberry should grow in Annecy.
we have apples, but since we don't spray, they are wormy and I don't go near them
hmm, they use the same word, murier, for blackberry or mulberry.
and they certainly had a silk industry in Lyon....must look into that question further
and China isn't exactly warm....
i have an espelier petit muscat apricot against a south facing fence to help ripening, first crop should be ready soon whilst i am away in the Dordogne.
my mulberry is morus nigra pendullata
I planted the fig against a south-facing wall and it does very well. It was my size (short) when we planted it 15 years ago and now it is enormous
I wrote that down and will try to find somebody knowledgeable (fat chance) at the local plant store
i grubbed out my fig white marsailes as it got to big and would`nt fruit often enough.
I don't know my variety, but they are green with red centers and I often have to share them with the birds which is OK with me
sounds like rouge de bordeaux
grubbed out?
you know much more than I; I'm a novice city girl
dug up ? i`m a towny as well, google reads nursery for varieties of fruit.
gotta go the boss wants to use the p/c
bye ron
great hullaballoo! doorbell! dogs! delivery man!
... could have been kettle and telephone too! ... then what would you have done? ... ...
close the door!
husband had his ship's clock and barometer, from his old sailboat, repaired in the US. They are very beautiful, from Chelsea Clocks
but it cost more to restore them than to buy new ones
... careful ... many thousands of dollars can be spent restoring old and beautiful clocks
we did! several thousand plus freight and import duty, which I don't understand since they were old and used....
buty since I don't wear a watch, I had grown dependent on the half-hourly chimes to navigate my days
... you probably could have gotten documentation that you were shipping it out of the country with the intention of bringing it back in
I tried that, but French douane doesn't listen (nor did UPS)
... my father got an old marble mantelpiece clock from his father that my mother never could get anyone to fix ... ... it just went off at odd hours of the morning ... like 3:15 for no particular reason ... ...
that's funny
this one was perfect for many years but then I guess it got tired.
we sold the sailboat when we left Miami, but kept the clock and barometer
... that's how it goes ... ... did you try sending it to Switzerland? ... or do they just do watches?
I'm sure we could have, but husband stubbornly insisted on going back to Chelsea
it would have been cheaper to fly there and carry the clock
... or just sailed the boat ...
... but then I guess it's hard to sail the boat halfway up an Alp ...
he tried to do that once, go transatlantic, but they only got as far as Nantucket when the mast came off
... it's a dangerous and expensive habit too ...
for sure
... masts aren't cheap
... and waves can be large
he had had that whole Herreshoff boat built for him; she was a Neria, 36'
but lake Annecy is very small and we were used to ocean sailing
they sail "prams" here, but only on calm days lol
... I know ... I did all my youthful sailing on Lake Ontario ... never could get the hang of sailing on a cottage country lake ... ... there just isn't room
I loved sailing; we used to go to the Bahamas from Miami
<-- missed the ocean
es*
we've chartered a couple of times, but it's not the same
... I was a wharf rat at a very expensive yacht club ... ... got to be an alternate crew for anyone and everyone ... ...
that sounds like a young man's dream !
... oh it was ... but I was too dumb to take full advantage ...
... I keep seeing their names in the announcement section of the business pages of the Globe and Mail ...
I was great as crew, although not strong, I could prepare lunch below while underway and never felt queasy
whose names?
... Paul Henderson ... ran the bid for the Toronto Olympics and was Canadian Olympic sailor ... crewed with him several times ... the McLaughlins ran Coke in Canada ... the Phelans own half the restaurants in Canada
heady company. Those must have been some sailboats, not like our modest Neria!
... I sailed mostly dinghies ... International 14s and Flying Dutchmen ... ... always wanted a Star - they were all sail and very little boat ... ... but I got to sail on Innisfree once ... ... last of the wooden hulls at the club ... 70 feet and beautiful ... ... and it took a printing press in the basement just to buy the wax for the decks
oh boy! I've never sailed on anything bigger than about 50' and that was a charter
but all kinds of smaller boats
learned to sail with Womanship, a great experience
"nobody yells!"
... how does that work? ... never been on a boat where nobody yelled ...
... even I yelled
our Herreshoff had a wooden hull and the smaller one husband had before, also
it worked!
the last boat made the cover of Southern Boating as she was so beautiful: Narwhal
... fibre glass and composites were just taking over when I was a teenager ... ... wood was just too difficult and too expensive and too time consuming to maintain ... particularly if you raced ... ... but they were beautiful
amen!
and the interior was walnut and lovely
she was a ketch
... sounds like Innisfree ... she was honey brown all over and had more wax on the topsides than my mother's dining room floor
teak decks, but I don't remember wax....
and all custom bonze fittings
bronze even
... and you needed sunglasses on sunny days from all the reflected glare
lovely chatting with you (as always), dose, but it's naptime
didn't the wax make it too slippery?
we "did" all of the Bahamas
*poof*
... a bientot

Good morning, all.
hello judi
morning judi
hi all. clue for the 8 and 10 plz.
FL 8/65 and fl 10 / 112 - 10 is pt of the 8
fl8/65 - f plus a word that means not as heavy or not as dark, but change the g for another consonant. The fl10 is the past tense.
And good morning/afternoon all.
can use the fl 4/8 to start the 8
hi haz!
hello Haz
ty for clues working on it.
Hello, TO, wv.
I'm still in Olympic euphoria, not concentrating terribly well on this grid.
they were a great games, though i missed the closing ceremony
dont get that fl. i dont see the word for not as heavy...................
fl 4 = fl** your Bic
I think I got more involved than usual because we were able to see so much happening in real time. The enthusiasm of the crowds was infectious.
yes, it was hard to get into it for me, spoilers everywhere
mkg, the word resembles the structure of a word (not in the grid) that means not as heavy 'My burden is l****** than yours'. Change one consonant.
enjoyed it very much but sleep deprived from staying up later than usual
We have the luxury of no adverts on BBC so the events were able to flow.
starts with fl** your bic? wow. i cant see how to go from there to get an 8.........
and here i felt the commentators talked too much - wanted to watch the events more
I watched so many different events, sports I had not really known much about but somehow with a bit of explanation they began to make sense and become very exciting.
hi all
did enjoy the variety
hello jmc
I think our commentators were good, they explained some of the technicalities but didn't insist on talking the whole time.
Hello, jmc.
i guess i dont get that fl 8 or 20. sorry. dont see l**** at all. and if it starts with the fl** your bic word i cant see how to get from that to anwhere else.
fl8 - fl plus German for I, I am ***ified that you won't get this clue.
German origin?
Sorry, ***rified.
No, of Scots origin, apparently.
ty haz. that did it. got both. ty haz.
That's good, mkg.
brb
brb
have dawlded enough today... happy babbling all
See you again, TO. Is MusicFest finished?
would love a clue for the e top row second from right side. only one word.
yes...and just saw on fb they are having half price sale. now i will never get the shirt i wanted, i am not even dressed yet.
and everyone i know is home resting.
But that's the fun of being retired, no need to get dressed too early!
what musicfest
fest.org
It's er7/36, er plus a word in the grid that often goes with 'work' - someone who believes in working hard has a good work ?
wow that was twisty!
44444444444444444444444444444444444444 44444444444+666666666666666666666..... ...................................... ...................................... ...................................... ...................................... ...................................... ...................................... ..................6+
argh damn cat sorry
I know. And jmc has awarded me lots of points for that clue.
ty haz. got two words from that clue.
I'm glad it worked, mkg.
had to run down and talk to contractor about fence. . . so the cat decided she should sit on my computer
with all those sixes i thought it was possessed
well it is a cat
the devil made her do it
haha no doubt
well time to get moving... the top o is a mystery to solve upon my return. happy babbling
good morning friends. nbt in 22 - not a bad start!
TOO FUNNY about the cat, I am rolling!
Bye, TO.

hi carlee
hi jmc
not here in fun loving massachusetts! Primo bought an Ipad on Saturday, and had to walk in line for 45 minutes just to enter the store! mind you, it was an apple store, so it was completely well staffed, organized, and pleasant

toodles all
you will never, ever regret it carlee
didn't read the article, crossy, but heard a snippet on the radio - sounds like people are cleaning out the shelves, leaving nothing for others, so I can see why the locals would be distraught - maybe put a limit on how many of something you can buy?
crossy loves his nook! get the nook with the glow feature
so what suze??? wasaga beach in no toursist season has a population of 1500 douls,in the summer it is over 200,000 i have been in gridlock for 4 hours to go from one side of the little burg to the other, yet we smile and put up with it every single year

hahaha crossy, I read that as "duds"
the garbage, the murders, the drugs they bring all of it..it is the price you pay to be any sort or tourist destinatiomn
if these small american towns to not want the custom do a large advertizing program and tell us to keep our meny at home, and we will
sorry,i have worked and lived in tourist industry for 30 years and that article blew my mind
I must admit, as an American I am surprised to hear this. Our economy is so bad, you would think any retailer would be thrilled to have such a problem!
like I say, I didn't read it, just heard a sentence or two on the radio.
we almost have to rebuild collingwood every summer and wasaga beach every year.the tourists destroy the places
nevernind a little cross border shopping lol
well, that is in itself unfortunate crossy
make them shop at night or specific hours.we would be a ghost town
they are still pissed they cannot buy gas in gallons!
and that is since 1978!
ok, read the article, sounds like some locals are pissed but the store and city management realize where their dollars - US or Canadian - come from
rebuilding is good for the economy and gives people something to complain about
its just because it makes them do math, crossy
what math? the pump shows dollars,cents,litres..do not need to convert it to cubits and put it in a ledger.we even give you a recipt lol
anyway I will be spending some money in Canada shortly, and I am a very polite tourist - if everyone were like me there would be no problems :-)
we love nice tourists:)
<--- wondering how to convert cubic cubits to gallons :-)
ha ha ha crossy! what I meant was, they have to think how many liters it will take to fill the car, when they are used to gallons
hiow far into canada you coming suze?
well OF COURSE sue! THAT goes without saying!
when the nozzle stops..it is full lol
as far as Bugsaw's, half way up Victoria Island
150-200 km, just eyeballing the map
never usderstood that, you want the car full and it takes 20 gallons? just say "fill it" and we will lol
<--- bilingual in metric and English
what town/city suze?
Comox
mm do not know it
about an hour north of Nanaimo
LOL crossy. What can you expect from a system where we pride ourselves on "Learning the three r's" in school yet only ONEN of them actually starts with an r?
ahh way over out west
three hours north of Victoria
lol trif
ONE that is
right, much further west and I'd be swimming (have to take a ferry to the island - been checking ferry schedules)
for reference: american gallon has 3.78 litres and the old canadian/british galln had 4.11 litres
hello everybody
I am not feeling at all friendly towards that c in the bottom right today. Must be C for Canadian! lol
((ruby))
hello ruby!
still missing the central e and the i southeast of it
Hello, Nancy
easy trif:) get the canadian barking again
hi ruby!!!
hahaha
hello babble rabble!
hi, BR!
et 5/14, il 4/4
sleeeeeepy
what a lovely group!
ha, got them, thanks amelu!
{{crossy}}
time to get on the road!!
Hello, phantom expatriate
imagine having to cook in metrics; it's no wonder I don't follow recipes
also el4/5.
BR: am I the phantom or is expat?
but what is the E from the top row, second E?
I am okay with cooking in metric, it's the "gas mark 1" or "gas mark 2" from old recipes that does my head in
no, not you, Nancy
let's see - have clothes, nightwear, maps, computer, smart phone, passport, meds - surely I am forgetting something
money!
something to read? camera?
er + et 5/14.
right, have some cash and my debit card, should suffice
well that's a weird one!
bottle of water
er + 2nd vowel + what are you, ****k if you can't get that word?
Good morning!
books on tape - but I should pack book 2 of Game of Thrones - also have many hours of books on CD thanks to the library
morning car! I am playing hooky today - shhhhhh
snacks!
I'm telling, trif
Your secret is safe with me!
please don't! I woke up with a murderous headache, so I called in. Went back to sleep and woke up two hours later much better, but I am staying put
then it's "recovery time"
for those canadians here who wish to add their imput on shopping restrictions for visitors in belling ham here is the info....
what's wrong with that? it's your sick time, you're free to use it. you're not a slave.
phone has a good camera, will get water and snacks on the road
(non-sticky snacks)
Hey trif...we will need to borrow your truck again.
http://www.bellingham.com/content/abou t/chamber_staff.asp and the phone number is 360.734.1330
oh, hurshy, you have NO idea how completely untrue that is! I am indeed a slave
okay car
when?
ok but you're not SUPPOSED to be a slave, so you gotta draw some lines.
when I was a teacher, I'd use sick days to go skiing because I had accumulated so many and was never sick. Would make lessons plans, etc. But I got caught
yes, you are right. But I will pay dearly for this folly. it just gets to the point, you know?
why will you pay dearly? i guess maybe i don't understand cause at my job if i miss a day, it doesn't hurt anyone, nobody else really has to work more, it just isn't a problem.
never used all my sick days, just got my retirement payout - was enough to buy myself a new car
Today or tomorrow. Have to go pick up new washer.
they didn't do that where I worked -- wasted was wasted
here they have a evil trick ruby,up till recently they would "bank" their sick days over the years and at retirement it was not unusual for a teacher to clear 40 thousand or better as all banked hours we now payable at current pay scales not at the scale year in which they were garnered
they do not pay us for sick time not used. if I were to depart the company, I would have to just hand the earned sick time back. how gross is THAT?
heck the working class do not even get sick days, never mind banking them
that's how it was in Binghamton, hence the ski days
ultimately, I quite over their trivial junk
quit* hahah some teacher
sick time?? what is this sick time you speak of?
glad you are getting the new washer, car! happy to loan vehicle
unions?? be-n-i-fits? i do not know these words
we don't have sick leave... I haven't actually had sick "pay" since 1996 and then it was 40 hrs a year and you got "written up" if you went over 32. Sweet, right?
brb
writing the chamber of commerce now, crossy - I note from the article that they have asked people to be patient, and are aware of the contributions that Canadians make to their economy, so I plan to thank them for that and urge them not to cave in to the nasty crazies
i indeed saw that suze
it just rubbed my fur the wrong way
our annual company party is this week, and we will once again crown the "clinician of the year" - I won last year, and I must admit, I hope I get it this year too, just to see my boss have to give it to me. She will choke saying my name
hmmm, the d's are a little hard
good morning all and how many words today and thanks
203
Don't forget dr + two of the same vowels.
Hi Steve!
morning steve. a healthy 203 word grid today
yeah, i have that
i remeber when the exchange on the dollar was 60/40 to the american good, they would pile over in the summer at the beach and hold that greenback out like it was a doggie treat just to watch us jump,so everyone in these border towns better retihnk this
just looked at the map - I will be driving through Bellingham on Friday. If I see mobs of vicious Canadians I will be sure to let you know :-)
oh, that reminds me car - party has been rescheduled for Wednesday, so Iwill need to shift mom to another day. washer night, maybe?
lol,ok suze
No worries. We are here all week.
"vicious canadians" made me larf - reminded me of "vermicious Knids"
try the veal, car
we are docile, but do not get us het up
:0
i met a canadian yesterday
I fell asleep during the closing ceremonies - any opinions as to how they went?
or birmingham will be able to roll up the sidewalks at 6 pm
bellingham*
speaking of the olympics, we almost have athlete. athleet.
george michael terrified me. how have the mighty fallen!
I loved him!
I thought the closing ceremonies were incongruent. Interesting for about the first hour. They redeemed themselves at the end.
car!
HOWEVER...If you want to see how the mighty have fallen...seen any of the recent pics of Axel Rose!?!?!? GAK!
Hi Crossy!
i heard that the spice girls were in it so made sure NOT to watch.
hard living will do that to you. A cautionary tale
somehow posh got almost NO air time - it was as if she requested to not be shown.....
the closing ceremonies were awful
OK...need help with the blasted E's!!! 2nd, 3rd and 4th columns....
and now it is time for crossys tidbit of the day!!!!!
ooph, husband just came into the studio and he NEVER does that!
there was, however, a lovely tribute to my boyfriend that made meVERY happy
Mozart's "Ah! Vous Dirai-je, Maman" might well be his most popular melody — it's the tune used in both "The Alphabet Song" and "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star."
Did they have George Michael singing out of a bathroom stall?
Yes, but he should have been there.
yay for tidbit!
seems like maybe she's got a different image going as victoria beckham, so maybe that IS the case, trif
he has retired, car
It from Ein Klein Nactmusik, yes?
oooh, harsh ruru!
So have most of the people that were on stage last night! No excuse!
oooh, harsh, car!
perhaps he was not invited. I just don't know. at least they didn't make a sculpture of his face - out of children! that was just entirely creepy
actually i don't believe Mozart wrote that song....
I loved that too.
Really harp?!?!? I thought so!
he wrote "Variations on ah...."
ok, I am ON THE ROAD!!! see you all later!!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twelve_Va riations_on_%22Ah_vous_dirai-je,_Maman %22
there u go harp
Be safe uusue! Keep us posted!
drive carefully sue!
harp, I have jilly's phone number and will call when I get to Missoula
have any of you seen pix of Iggy Pop lately? He's even scarier than Keith Richards and he is constantly in Fr magazines
BON VOYAGE!!!!
snif snif.....there she goes, our own little jack kerouac
ok, uusue, should be fun!
when has iggy pop NOT been scary?
tc suze and watch for those evil canadians!

car: 2nd is er 7/36, 3rd is et 5/14 or el 4/5, 4th is ea 5/12.
TY Amelu! Someone is paying attention to my cries for help!
they even had an obnoxious interview with him, in French! When was he famous?
~:o)
Got the third!
what was the deal with the saxophone player flying through the air?
Whoops...make that the 4th.
when he was a consort with David Bowie ruby
pink floyd messing with our heads as per usual, harp
or even WHY was he famous?
I guess I missed that :(
he had one hit or two I think
in the movie, Love Actually, was Bill Nighy spoofing him?
3rd columns done!
I feel like I've lived in a cave for the past 20 yrs
yay car.
It seemed like the cameras should have either followed him or ignored him. (the sax guy)
Now the er 7...is that the one clued earlier that is er + et 5?

Hi everyone ..
Thanks car - I didnt know.

fl8 - fl plus German for I, (three letters), then three quarters of the seabird
No worries! We have all done it!
haz!
The fl10 is the past tense, and it's Scots rather than German.
Hello!
where have you been? were you competing in the olympics? :)
lag!!!!! ahh the humanity!
good morning haz
I wasn't competing in the Olympics but I watched a great deal. I'm still revelling in the memories.

I've never enjoyed an Olympics quite so much - real time viewing and lots of excitement over a vast range of sports.
it's been a great olypmics..well done england
Got 'em! TY!
ah scots
so were you excited to see andy murray win?
but whomever dished up the spice girls deserves a spanking
Ruby...it sounds like a noise you make when you see something gross.
ruby - think of what you would scratch and take out the t (begins with i)
The Spice Girls aren't my cup of tea either but they were very popular. They probably tried to appeal to lots of people.
car, tertiare has arrived, and bids you good morning
Hello my dear!
phew, got the 8
she loves her auntie!
Tell her that her cousins are missing her terribly!
and just pt it for the ten ruby
It was eccentric in parts (the closing ceremony, I mean) and lots of stuff that only Brits would get but that's okay.
Honestly...my favorite part was Pele!
Go Ruby!
she has cheerleading camp all this week, so she will be a bit ofa ghost Iam afraid
:(
ty crossy, I think that's the highest value word I ever had

okay, I am off to add value. my love to you all!
bye car.

And hurshy, re Murray, I wasn't actually around to see him win, but yes, I was pleased. I'm normally a Federer fan but on this occasion I was glad Murray won.
Well, i should go and get ready. We are having fruit issues here, so I must be ready to go to the store as soon as Mom gets back from the gym.
Bye Trif! {{hugs}}
"fruit issues?"
yay for Murray!
i wish you all a wonderful day! {{hugs}} to all.
The 'petals' of the cauldron are going to be sent to each country that took part so it kind of finishes the symbolism off nicely.
do you have to pear down car.ee?
Her women's church group was asked to do the coalation after a funeral today. My mom was asked to bring fruit. For the last three days, she has been focused on fruit. I will be glad when the funeral is over.

Wonderful today, thank you :)
And thanks, Annie, you too! I've not been around in a while, I think.

I am glad you had a good time
sorry to pop in and out, must start thinking about dinner
andrew, glad you had a grand time and now, bye
Thank you :) a very talented friend of mine won a trip there - that's how we got to go. I never do stuff like that normally, so it was a huge deal for me!
aw, thanks and bye, Annie!
i now offer a very special tidbit of the day now some of you may know carl sagan some of you know of the picture that inspired this video and the book but i offer it as i often think of this picture when things seem too hard, too vast, where the world seems to have to many sharp edges and i need to reset myself, anyways here it is
The Pale Blue Dot is a photograph of planet Earth taken in 1990 by the Voyager 1 spacecraft from a record distance of about 6 billion kilometers (3.7 billion miles) from Earth, as part of the solar system Family Portrait series of images. In the photograph, Earth is shown as a tiny dot (0.12 pixel in size) against the vastness of space.[2] The Voyager 1 spacecraft, which had completed its primary mission and was leaving the Solar System, was commanded by NASA to turn its camera around and to take a photograph of Earth across a great expanse of space, at the request of Carl Sagan. Subsequently, the title of the photograph was used by Sagan as the main title of his 1994 book, Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space.[3] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p86BPM1 GV8M
Gosh, Crosshair, that is almost a little frightening. That makes me feel really strange!
it has a way of putting things in perspective
You can say that again! But I'm feeling very good today, so it makes me feel like I could hold that little blue dot on my fingertip!
indeed:)
we are a mote of dust in a sunbeam:)
make you feeling pissy bout burning dinner seem small:)
You don't seem the type to internalise bad feelings much anyway :) you seem like a very positive person to me.
why ty andrew:) i have been taught some lessons in life and it also hap put things into prospective for me.to not sewat the small stuff and that worrying about tomorrow is like trying to empty an ocean with a teaspoon and to live for now as a million things can happen between now and tomorrow
sweat
no need to thank me; I'm sure your cheerful attitude brightens up the lives of many people on here! it certainly makes me feel happy.
hello babble friends! *chokes on cross' cheerful attitude* gee whiz, can't a person just be an old grump sometimes? *grump*
oh oh... I killed chog. *decidedly uncheerful attitude*
haha, hello Stid!
Don't worry. I have enough good mood for everyone today ;)
hey andrew *perks up* I am sulking because it's a sunny day but I hurt my hip so I can't actually get any work done. On the plus side, I don't technically HAVE to get anything done, just I am eager to reclaim my office space so I can "do" art again.
and I am glad you are in a good mood, andrew -- did I see you were away on vacation for a while? Someplace nice?
Oh, that's unfortunate, Stid. I Hope your hip feels better soon - there is nothing seriously damaged, I hope?
and yes, a (very!) good friend whisked me away to Florence :)
I have a bad hip, and I did "something" and it sort of went bonkers on me. So... waiting for Tom to get home and set it for me (usually he can put it back in the socket). If that doesn't work... I don't know. ortho docs don't seem to be able to figure it out.
ooooh. I would ADORE going to Florence! It's totally on my list of places I dream about.
nice friend...
oh, that does sound like a pain :( my fingers are crossed that he can fix you up!
mine too! I have only a couple days before I leave for the babble meet on Vancouver Island!
and yeah, my friend won tickets, so that was really lovely :)
oh, that sounds exciting! well I hope you get there in one piece...!
were you playing tourist and going to the "must-see" places, or being more laid back? I would think it would be nice to pretend to be a local person, and go to some of the out of the way sites
stidmama! you must take care of yourself and not over do it!!,,,frowning crossy look
I will, andrew-- it's just a question of whether I go on the crutches, or just have them in the back of the van. I have them with me whenever I go more than an hour from home.
ha! cross, you're silly -- I DO take care of myself, and I am NOT overdoing it (if I were, I would have had Grant help me set up in the office so I could do a little bit of sorting without moving much.
we did a mixture, really...I think, because I'm German, I'm always really obviously a tourist, haha! There's just something about us...and we went to a lot of art galleries.
Which actually reminds me, one task on my list is to test all these pens to see if they work. I think I can discard about 50 dried-out writing utensils
???? you're german? and you live in "feed the birds" territory? sehr interessant!
I enjoy art galleries, too - the various perspectives of people never ceases to amaze me. Including what some people consider "art"
I prefer gardens, of course. :-)
oh yeah, haha! yeah, I was born in Berlin and came over to England about five years ago.
stidmama, that is my one pet peeve, pens that do not work!! i would rather pay 100 dollars for a pen that works every time than forever grabbing a pen that does not work when you have the phone to your ear trying to jot down a critical number or message
about a hundred and fifty years ago one of my ancestral families was in Berlin -- my grandmother's grandmother.
Others were in vorpommern and silesia.
hi all! I keep pencils around -- they do't dry up.
I sometimes feel as if I like the art gallery ambience more than anything else. We went to the Uffizi, which was cool. Saw a looot of pictures of Jesus.
tips break on me jilli
JILLERY-DILLERY-DOO!!!!!! (((((hugs))))) about time you showed up when I was awake!
:)
jillery-doo? lol
my Australian grandparents and their kids were in Berlin pre WW1. Hello Andrew.
I like the architecture of the Uffizi (if it's the one I am thinking of) -- when I took a course in Italian culture we talked a lot about florence -- and sienna. The rest of the class went to Italy, I couldn't afford to go.
ohhh, really? gosh, look at all you secret part-Germans coming out of the woodwork :)
books have been sent to you paula if your in here
I get the pencils which are the kind you just need to push the eraser on the end to get more lead.
grandfather had a language school there.
We are born with genetics and into an environment that we may never think about as influencing our behavior ... Rene Descartes: “If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things.â€
He taugt diplomats and such German (and other languages) by total immersion and phonetics.
but mostly I am not of german heritage -- Irish is the biggest chunk of this mutt's heritage
Hi babrab!
BR -- I think we all do, as adolescents.... *sigh*
That's Tilley, right, Jill?
my family line is a bit complicated, but I think it's mostly based in Berlin. My family lived in East Berlin, so it was a very austere place.
right, stid. And sorry to hear your hip is acting up.
that's insightful, BR! How very true.
ah, that was a rough area to wind up in, I think.
Me too, Jill! My first thought (I was in a parking lot walking toward Grant who was in the car) was whether I could limp that far... and the second was to hope I had put the cane back in the car. I hadn't needed it for a long time.
So am I the only one who always attempts "dreft" (laundry soap) when it's there?
ah yes, a lot of difficulty in East Berlin, but I was born on the day the wall came down, so I experienced none of it!
I've tried it, and other old trade names like "prell" shampoo.
ah, you're YOUNG! I remember the day the wall started coming down -- everyone in the office I worked in was ecstatic.
lucky you, andrew!
You experienced what your parents taught and they lived through that time
Hi stidmama - I also try Dreft - so kind to hands and your woollies !
indeed, yes -- used it for baby clothes when my boys were little.
hi scouser
I was lucky! Ironically, I was raised by my older sister, and she was pro-communism, so because of that I didn't stray far outside the old boundaries. When I ran away to England, it was really eye-opening! Now, I'm an explorer by nature.
Hi jillibus.
I am thankful I am curious
It's a wonderful thing, BR :)
stidmama I must have used Dreft in Canada?
maybe, don't they have it in England?
Imagination is more important than knowledge. ~Albert Einstein
Could be, sclouser -- we had it here.
*scouser
I think that is a great quote too, BR -- hope you are well, btw?
Einstein stopped reading physics journals because he thought they stifled his imagination.
I will always be a nutter .... some days less so
greetings from alberta, babblers!
ah, normal then. *grin*
hi welki and drwed
Hey jillibus I think sclouser is a good a5/10native. ta
greetings.
Hi welki
Interesting, professor
and drwed
speaking of nuts, when I walked out in the back yard this morning, there was a HUGE racket emanating from the wellhouse - the doors were open to air it out while it's nice, so it makes a lovely drum. SOMETHING was dropping stuff on the roof! As soon as I started down the path, the noise stopped.
hey drwed
As an academic, I see how conventional research holds back free thinking.
Hey Stid.
what do you profess at, drwed?
well stidmama - what was it?
So later, the noise started up again. I had figured it was birds or something -- it was squirrels, disconnecting the fir cones and dropping them down to eat the little green seeds.
Political Science. I teach courses on terorism.
how-to courses? *innocent mama look*
wow -- very pertinent subject, drwed!
Stid! You're baaaad ;)
lovely surre4/4 chog here - terrorism and squirrels and soap. where else can one get this level of entertainment?
I make that joke a lot, but not so much after 9/11
Anyway, the second time I started down the path, the critters came TOWARD me dropping cones!
LOL scouser, true. It's very diverting.
Were the critters sharing, stid?
The first month of course is history of terrorism starting with 1st century AD, followed by psychology of terrorism, followed by sociology of terrorism, and finally counter-terrorism policy.
I lit out for the house... I don't think so, BR -- they are not very thoughtful neighbors (they eat ALL my hazelnuts just before they are actually ripe)
Well I'm completely in awe, Drwed. I dream of having a Ph.D
Sounds very interesting, drwed. 1st cent would be the jewish uprising?
there is a squirrel in a nearby park that looks as if it has a stripey jersey in two-tone greys, when it sits upright. and the ones in the trees here are getting more and more reddish fur on them.
One step at a time and you eventually get there Andrew.
terrorism has induced our representatives to make a shambles of the Constitution
I know the romans were not well liked in some of the territories
Especially because my last name is Freud...
Parts of the 4th amendment no longer exist
True Babble...but the thing is, it came a little at a time. One right sacrificed at a time.
id is?
how peculiar, scouser -- around here, we still have a few of the native red squirrels (which I love), but every year the invasive Eastern Gray move a little further out our peninsula
hahaha! quick, BR, very quick ;)
The first form of terrorism was a dagger attack by Zealots (Jewish sect) against Roman soldiers in broad daylight.
What's that quote about people who focus so much on security instead of freedom end up having not much of either?
I ask people who say they have nothing to hide whether they close their doors and shades at night
there is a closely guarded colony of red squirrels at Formby north of Liverpool, but as far as I know they do not cross-breed. Maybe the colour is diet-related
That is pretty much the quote...came from Benjamin Franklin.
I didn't know about the dagger attack -- pretty brave
I've only seen a squirrel here once -- about 15 years ago. It was a small one, in the woods.
Red squirrels, huh? Must have migrated from Ireland :-)
The one who did the attack was usually the one who screamed afterward about the attack.
The de4 probably scared them away. You grow big specimens, Jill!
hm. so pretending it was someone else?
Well, numerous dear, yes, but there are bigger ones.
Exactly...to throw off suspicion.
Zealots came to an end at Masada.
Hi Sis!, stiddy, drwed...
oops -- PB with double time for misspelling the animal.
did other times/cultures have similar events at around that time? Wondering if there is a progression from one point or if there were independent "inventions"
As bad as terrorism is, climatic change is a more serious threat to freedom
Hey Jill.
Hi sis!
no, there are red squirrels in Scotland too. re: 1ST century I have just re4/5 a nasty book based around so-called Mithraic worship and extreme violence.
Right. the Romans were just too big -- but didn't their efforts make it clear that the Romans were still only human?
Jilly! :-) nice to see you!
Started at that time. Later on, others came to attack Roman occupiers. The Goths were the most successful, but they too were wiped out...but not before marching to Rome and sacking it.
So, after 23 years in our house, we have a deer problem for the first time....liked my beets last night... :(
I must go as the midnight hour is approaching. no pumpkins here though.
Grant has a friend over, playing video games. It is fun to sit here on the sofa and listen to them talking about the games, interspersed with little nuggets of "life"
Niters scouser...sweet dreams!
oh oh jilly -- *stern mama look at de4* *places brownies in PB for jilly*
sweet dreams scouser
gnight scouser
ta jilly goodnight all.
Yes, it showed the Romans were not invincible. Too bad the Israelis did not learn this lesson centuries later...and neither did the Palestinians.
your son must not use as many curse words as i do playing video games
OUch...too upset about de4/4...heading to PB....*waking up cabana boys!*
Jilly and jilli will be having all kinds of fun in the PB
BR, I am inclined to agree with you -- but for some reason people don't take it as seriously
Hi LA! This place is getting crowded!
Haha, Leslie!
LOL LA! well... he has a few he uses, but I have encouraged him to be a little more moderate. As when I am driving I have my own "phraseology" to describe other drivers...
What really bothers me, since we live in the information age, is that people seem unable to connect what happened in the past (the psychology and sociology of those struggles for equality and freedom) with what is happening now. Over and over and over...
Indeed.
When I teach history, I always try to ask students to look at what they are studying and find something happening right now (there's always something current) that reflects similar situations, thinking or solutions.
We live in an information age with stone age minds.
is that on the final? :)
A little different from when I was a kid and we had to find a "current event" in the paper every day, but no connection to anything we were studying.
It will be on the test. Everyone log onto tonight at 10 PM for the questions.
Malthusian theory never has been taken seriously ... but when Stephen Hawking says: “I believe that the long-term future of the human race must be in space.
uh oh better start cramming
The problem with Malthus is that his predictions were for early 1800s, as I recall, and then folks made similar predictions afterward that never came true.
LA, for your final, you are being asked to find a person who lived in England between 1800 and 1830, from approximately your socio-economic background, and write a biography that reflects how that person felt about the events surrounding the Regency and early Victorian eras.
rofl
hm. Lucky thinks someone is here.
oh, and it's due tomorrow.
oh dear
The answers will be available on eBay in a few minutes.
good grief
drwed! that's one way to get paid what you're worth
Yeah, what Stidmama said, but see if you can give it a neo-Marxist construction (everyone else does).
how much better is good grief from bad grief?
and perhaps the phallocentricity of the Victorian age can be deconstru.,... never mind
here is a very short introduction to that period... http://www.usq.edu.au/artsworx/schoolr esources/emma/theregencyperiod
roflmao jbp!!!!
The universe does not recognize good or bad, it knows only balance.
or imbalance
and your paper is only good if it has a semicolon in the title
oof that reminds me of a particularly embarrassing moment in high school psychology class
in which i asked what phallic meant
colon, you mean
who wants to clue me the top not corner E...?
colon? that's my field...LOL
yes. silly semi me
I would, but after thinking I had NBT I find I don't have that one...
good one jilly!
The problem is with the people who are part of the universe ...
Regency: The Deconstruction of the English Monarchy
er7 -- er + sense of right and wrong
the center E could also be welcome
Leslie, what did the teach say in response?
the girl in front of me intervened. turned around and spat out, "IT'S A PENIS, LESLIE!"
the centre E is the last part of the er7
Some people say they like "humanity" but can't stand people... I am the other way around. I really enjoy being around individuals, but as a whole, humanity is pretty stupid.
rofl LA!!!
ROFL...how funny..no wait, I mean horrendous Leslieann!
Was it a Freudian slip?
there is very little more embarrassing to a high school girl
Center E=el+common greeting
ah! thanks jilly and jill
un less it's Fonzy saying "eeeee" (or "ayyyy)...
Yay!! Good behavior warrants out of the PB for Jilly!!
Does Victoria's Secret carry freudian slips?
And Jilli!
yw stid -- I wondered if anyone had seen the clues or if they were blinded by phallic thoughts
Where's ruru now? He'd love this turn of chat!! *shudders*
'Freud' is German for 'joy', BR, so I guess it's all about how the underwear makes you feel...
well, i'm off to scrounge din. hope to be back later and find that greeting.
But sadly, must toddle off to put salmon in marinade and devise horrific plans for a certain de4/4...bbl
Okay, what is everyone wearing right now?
Be well, jbp
mmmm. salmon.
later jbp and jilly
clothes, drwed... *rolls eyes* as usual!
I thought better of it after I hit enter.
haha...the original Freud would have had a field day with me.
yep. too bad there isn't a "screening" subroutine that can ask you "are you SURE about this" before it posts...
N. Susanne Martin
Indeed.
but one that would only ask if you are posting something potentially inflammatory or rude...
stid, did you see any of the perseid shower? I saw ONE shooting star last night at about 1 am.
no jill, have been too tired to stay up until their appearance. Nothing visible at 10 pm the last three nights here.
did anyone?
I didn't.
That name seems familiar, BR but I am not certain why. I might have read a paper by her at some point.
That post was meant for another site.
well, sorry to leave this conversation, but it's duplicate bridge night and I have to get an early supper. Besides, I'm finding this grid too full of useless words. Toodles, all!...*poof
I didn't Jilli because I was too tired to go back inside for my glasses
have fun at bridge, jill.
hi and bye, bugs!
hey bugs!
hello, just arrived and sorry to have missed Jilli
Will Jilly be a replacement for Jilli?
u certainly will but I am supposed to be invisible because I not really here. I am bunging out my closet. ;)
hey again jilly! marinating the salmon in what?
oh bugs... good for you! that is also on my list, but I think it will have to wait for next summer now.
I am having company come this week stid. It always helps me to have a deadline. lol
Trying new recipe with soy, garlic,. basil, thyme, olive oil, brown sugar..
*does not see bugsaw and removes all references of same*
:-) But I wasn't going to look in your closets... *rolls eyes* coming to see you, my friend!
ty Jilli. you are a gem
that sounds divine, jilly!
I'll let you all know...serving with fresh broccoli, cauliflower and brown rice...
okay, I have to kick the kids off the video game and get the friend back to his house. Not sure if my offspring is going to taekwondo or if we're coming back home.
Have fun with that stid! Our oldest is home and put gutter covers on roof today...now gaming
(((Bugs))) don't wear yourself out. Really. We just want to sit, visit, TALK (a lot) and eat yummy things, most of which we can make once we get there.
I'll be back later -- kiddo says he'll find the tall stool that belongs in my office so I can work in there this evening! Back once I have accomplished something. *poof*
Does anyone need clues? I'll be on for a few more minutes....
crossy is back;)

Despite its 6.5 million square feet of floor space, the Pentagon in Washington was constructed in such a way that no point in the building is more than a seven minute walk from any other point in the building

Hi there, tor.

hi Minver..... i am much better thank you.
aebmusica, did U celebrate your right to be a le4/7y?
Heyas kids ..
i always celebrate that.. teachers tried to change me to the other hand, but did not succeed.
I grew up wanting to be a le 4/7y. I tried for several years to force myself to become a le4/7y to no avail.
Nuns were brutal to kids who tried to write with their left hands.
I was taught by nuns through high school and never once saw that
because of arthritis in his elbow and shoulder of his right arm ny DH has switched over to being a LE4
Guess I went to "bad" Catholic schools.
Did y'all hear that Helen Gurley Brown has died at age 90?

hi stiddy
hello Min I am okay today, hope you are well?
That er 7/36 word is er plus that et 5/14 word kje.
how did orientation go today kje?
Ty!
Long. Interesting. I watched a video on the constitution. And another on the history of veterans rights. Had to swear an oath
Dawg...how smoky is it up there?
But mostly boring - lol
??? you working for the VA?
Yes. Partly.
Yep. orientations are often all about things you already know. Oh well, that's over with, now you can settle in to your actual job.
Nope. 8 more hours tomorrow!
Tomorrow we open with a video about fort Miley
really???? gah. I hope they are paying you a BUNDLE.
(that may not be right)
I cant complain stid
Stid
LOL don't worry about capital letters. just happy to be noticed...
Yesterday you were stud, today you are arid. Autocorrect can't figure you out!
Stidkid #2 (Grant) is upset because we won't drive him back into town to visit with his gf this evening. He can spend time with her tomorrow, but for some reason that's not good enough.
well, it hasn't rained in a few weeks now, so arid isn't far off!
Ah, it showed corrected to arid, guess I caught it in time. I never worry about capitals!
Oh, I remember those days stiddy....
If he can't drive himself, he's too young for a gf!
Dawg....are you still on??? Need to tell you something about Thursday and Uusue coming through!!!!
ordinarily it wouldn't be a big deal, but it's tom's first day back to work after vacation and I hurt my hip this morning so instead of me fixing him a nice meal after getting several things accomplished today I am sitting in my chair on the heating pad and he is cooking. *sigh* I hate feeling useless
he's well old enough, kje -- we simply didn't let him get a license/learner's permit earlier. He'll be 18 before he is eligible to get that license.
Nor useless, you clued me a weird word ; )
well, thanks for that, kje
18? Still too young!
Boys that age have a real hard time seeing the big picture.....
Texas out. California in ?
you know that, and *I* know that... but adolescent hormones don't know that!!!
hey BR
Hi there BR!!

I am a little distracted, a local news anchor died today -- she has been so brave in the face of life-changing surgeries, and will be hard to get over the fact that she isn't going to be back at her desk again.
and so I am watching the memorial that her friends at the station have put together. It's lovely...
WooT WooT WooT Stid!!
LOL thanks jilly
how very sad stid.....
I am sad, have been crying ever since I learned she died.
local news anchors are very important to the community. i remember when one got fired in chicago, everyone boycotted that station.
Her name was Kathi Goertzen, at KOMO tv
She was beautiful on the outside, but really nice, too -- she never seemed to let her advantages be a way to make anyone else feel "less than"
googled her. reading an article
anyway, don't want to bring others down, just wanted to let you know why I am a little distracted
i was just noticing several of my NW friends posting about her stiddy
soudns like an incredible lady
more than i would expect for a local news personality
30 years!
she was really REALLY amazing
won emmys for her abiliity to cover live news non scripted
OMG, I have a friend here who has a meningioma; had surgery in June, still not doing well....makes me even more worried....
Ok all le4/5ies, you got 15 minutes le4/7 to celebrate
well, what actually took Kathi out wasn't the tumor, but a pneumonia she developed this past week. A response to a medication, they are saying -- she made it through 14 years...
only 15 minutes? flip isn't for another hour and 15!
She was my age....
just a young-un, Jilly
Thanks stiddy! ;)
;-) any time, jilly
she emant 15 mins left for le4 day on east coast :)
HI all:) Can someone give me a clue for the LA 5/10? The first one! ty

much better clue stid than mine was!
I like the philosopher!
ty much Jilly! fireworks on that:) And ty Stid also!
WooT WooT WooT altagolfnut!
brb
YAY alta!
Okay, the neighborhood school just opened up a leave replacement position in the middle school... I hit "apply" and don't expect anything. But maybe since it's "leave replacement" there will be fewer experienced teachers applying.
Congratulations Altagolfnut5 on fireworks! Way to go
*crosses fingers and prays*
Keep your chin up stid...you are a called and gifted teacher...
I just sort of want a chance to show them I "CAN" do it. I won't be as skillful as more experienced teachers, I know -- and yet it's a grade and population I know really well. We'll see.
It is just doubly hard to get that first job plus not being able to relocate...
Plus, God bless anyone called to middle school!!
Exactly -- were I single, or at least no kid and pets and garden and mortgage and ... *sigh* but I love where I live and don't want to relocate anyway.
LOL well, someone has to do middle school and as difficult as the kids can be at that age they still need adults who take them seriously and who are willing to be there. It means so much to the kids, and they have a lot of great things to offer.
okay, that was hard. they closed with her empty anchor chair.
all right, Grant is giving me a tutorial on how to play his PS3 game (I am VERY bad at shooting people, it turns out). So I will head out. ***many hugs of gratitude*** thank you all for being here. *poof*
Goodbye stidmama! I will see you tomorrow in the log.
Niters stid!

Well guys, family drama starting again...signing off for night..going to drown my troubles in ice cream... *poof*
