Yep, I just saw the news on MSNBC. He's retiring at the end of the month. At 85 he can retire and relax.
I think it might be a little more complicated than that.

Popes just don't "retire".
Not in 500 yrs, but he IS old and frail. And the Catholic Church wouldn't have any secrets or hidden agenda, would it? (I am a Catholic.)

My friend and her husband flew into Sydney on Saturday morning and will enjoy 2 wks in Oz, then a week in NZ.
Hope they have a wonderful time. I like Sydney - to visit, that is. I wouldn't want to live there but then I'm over city living!
I hope to visit NZ some time before too long!
They are traveling all over Australia, seeing the highlights.
I'm sure they'll take hundreds or thousands of photos!

It's great to wake up to the sun on most days and the weather where we are in Queensland is not generally too extreme.
I have a neighbor that grew up outside of London. She married an American guy and came here 25 yrs ago. She is a lovely, wonderful person.
I am stuck with 45 left.
I loved living in London (well, outside London really) - probably didn't take enough advantage of what London has to offer. It was time for a move though, along with early retirement from teaching.
I'm struggling now with 51 left!

yes, thankful for that. And, we shoveled out the entire driveway. But when the plow does come, we'll end up with lots more stuff in the driveway. Snow over, icy rain today. Driving would be treacherous.
oh, no, and you'll have trouble dealing with that mound they'll leave at the end of the drive, especially with some ice thrown in, I imagine.
we are going to walk out and look at our road today to see whether it is well plowed or not, to see if we can go to walmart.

Didn't work for me, hurshy. I have 3 cats but one is especially mischievous. This morning he was upset that I wasn't feeding him an hour early at 5:30 so he managed to get behind my armoire and unplug the TV. He has done all manner of damage and earned his name...Dodger. But since I have a real weakness for "bad boys" I actually find him amusing...except at 5:30 in the morning!

Got all 3 of mine as strays--the brother and sister since they were tiny. They have ripped posters off the wall, chewed through the speaker cord of my computer and through my Bose headphones cord, ripped up the carpet around the edges....I could go on and on. But I do love them and they give me lots of affection. I keep reminding myself it's the living creatures that matter not the inanimate objects. I've had to barricade my computer so they can't chew the cords anymore.
we might add that Peri's cat just turned 17 last week

and mimi,for cats with wire/cable gnawing issues.just go to the auto dept of your hardware/auto parts shoppe and ask for 1/2 wire harness tubing.you order it off a roll by the foot and it has a slit along one side of the tubing and you can insert you computer wiring/electrical cables etc and then they are safe from kitty
mine aren't too destrucive, but very demanding, very early in the morning.

Sounds like mine alright. A long time ago I was traveling with my cats cross country and we stopped at a hotel. I couldn't find my male cat but could hear him. He had somehow managed to get into the chest of drawers behind the drawer. Hey, but I just remember when I raised monkeys at home...wanna talk trouble?!!

They have good prices, most books are 35-75%, but the shipping blows away all the savings - local shipping is cheap though.
because of the shipping eating away the savings,i tend to save it for rare,signed,first editions or out of print titles

A lot of local 2nd hand book stores are so picky about what they take and then they give so little for it, I usually just end up donating books to the hospital.

That's why I like HalfPrice books Mich, they do give a decent amount, but they also collect books to donate to local schools and community centers.

re: getting snowed in and supplies.i was in fuel business for 30 years and a lot of people really do not realize just how little fuel is on hand.i live in a town of 20,000 in a heavily traveled tourist area close to a main highway but ALL the fuel for southern ontarios is from 3 refineries all in the same location near sarnia ontario and as such all stations in this area have about 3 days of fuel under the ground at any given time(with normal consumption) this is why i always sake my head at those who spend their lives with 5 dollars of gas slopping round the bottom of the cars tank always on the hunt for the "deal"

People truly don't know how to stock up with the correct things for a big storm. Look at the carts in the store the night before a big storm is to hit. They are full of ice cream and junk food.
when we lived further north,we used to shop for 2 weeks at a time.home place was 20 minutes to paved road and hour to first store hour and a half to first town
i and still remember the seemingly incredible amount of dry goods we used to stock(lots of flour),pasta,tea,sugar,dhydrated taters.powdered and condensed milk,tons of root veggies,soup fixings.etc.etc

we live in a small village but thankfully not far from ameneties but we are always stocked up with essentials
and because we were in the bush everything had to go from its packaging to cannisters.a whole sea of cannisters
or the mice would have a party
and lord i used to hate powdered milk but always had the condensed for coffee or tea if it came to it
now you can get milk that lasts for ages sealed in tetra packs

touch wood ...we have never been in that situation.
the longest I can remember being without power was about 24 hours.
been long time for me as well,though even after 20 years of not having it i can still smell the distinctive smell of carnation canned condensed milk in my mind

diane,looking back it was nice indeed.except when it was your turn to go across that ice cold floor in the morning to stoke the stove and put the big kettle on to boil
no problem.... and being the eldest of 5, I learned those little chores at an early age. However, my dad always had things started before he headed into town to the meat market.
biggest problem i remeber is after being out in the cold all day working or fishing or sledding,you pulled the liners from your boots and put them on the stove fender,ate 2 bowls of hot stew and half a loaf of crusty bread slathered in butter,sat down in from of that stove and it's pulsing heat and instantly fell asleep:)
i could never stay awake in that house unless i was activly moving:)

We had both,... kerosene and gasoline. I have a feeling that the gasoline were a little more dangerous as they had to have pressure pumped into them. I still remember how to prime a mantle !!
I would be afraid of cats around kerosene lamps.
and replace the delicate mantle bags? hehe they were naptha lamps.we had them but were mostly for outside as they are quite loud and bright
