he does. He turned 58 in December and that is the age you can consider retiring with full benefits from the elevator trade
BUT ..... then you start paying your own health care. He would ideally like to wait until 62 but I don't know that his body will hold out that long
Something to think long and hard about. Health care is very expensive but then his well being is very important also.
he has already said he would not retire this year.
Maybe he will hold out as long as he can.
perhaps he can find something different to do. he's still young and has a lot to offer without all the physical strain.
the cost of the health premiums would go down once he gets on medicare but that is a ways off
I wish I could talk him into that LBD.

have him visit your local job services office. they can help direct him to other types of work that he'd be interested in.
He has started some woodworking and metal art and he would like to make things to sell at craft fairs
cottage industry, fun but not always financially sound, but perhaps he can find a company that does woodwork or tool and dye type stuff.
He is the oldest at Schindler Elevator in Cincinnati so he has it pretty easy. I really think he would bark at changing jobs because of the pay and the benefits. But who know, get him at a weak moment :-)
LBD, he was thinking when he retired he would do these things. He would have an income but a way to supplement it
are there any light duty jobs or a desk job he can be moved to?

hobbies are wonderful to have, especially after retirement.

that too although we've been hearing nasty things about the other major drug they use for colon cancer, cisplatin - apparently the side effects can be quite nasty

his surgeon's group has given him a poverty discount so the bill is now $3000 instead of $16000 (which is about all they would have gotten from an insurance company anyway as they all negotiate lower rates)
if you want all the details regarding cisplatin,suze you can email me for all the gory details
well, he's on the alternative to cisplatin now (camptosar) and it isn't too bad, it's the erbitux that's giving him the most trouble
but each person is different
I will if they start talking about putting him on it, crossy, and thanks!
meanwhile we are still planning to travel when this set of chemo is done at the end of May - look for us in June or July!
and if he does do on cisplatin he better have 100 pounds of weight he can afford to lose.thats what i lost
i was on it 6 months or so
that would leave him at about 50 pounds, so probably not :-(

although he has gained a little of what he lost before the diagnosis (he'd been unable to eat much for months)

Usually I lurk during the day because if I am on, I am babbling at work.

Bosses are funny like that, they seem to think that their employees should be doing their work.
many studies have shown that a break - or a npa improves the overalll performance on the job... but i take your point
I'm my own boss, and babble certainly improves my performance at work ;)
i find switching tasks throughout the day gives you a little recharge... just like taking a break from babble gives you "new eyes" when you return to it... that's when the fish start to pop out

Mine is, I was in a rush to feed my hungry 17 month old daughter. I dropped the tray to the highchair and said ... She just sat there quietly waiting for her food. I gave her her lunch and continued whatever I was doing. About 5 or 10 minutes she said her first sentence "Sh**, sh**, sh**, sh**, sh**." For the next week or so, she said the word every time I dropped something. Only for me not anyone else. I was mortified. I thought I was a terrible influence on my baby (obviously 1st child).
