TIPSY CAKE CAKE: 5 eggs, separated 1 c. sugar 1 c. sifted all-purpose flour 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1 tbsp. grated lemon rind GLAZE: 1/2 c. sugar 1/2 c. cream sherry or brandy 2 tbsp. sugar 2 tbsp. cinnamon CAKE: Beat egg yolks until thick, then slowly add 1 cup sugar, beating until mixture is fluffy. Sift the flour and baking powder over egg yolk mixture and stir until just blended. Fold in lemon rind. Beat egg whites until stiff; gently fold yolk mixture into whites. Pour into greased tube pan. Bake 30 to 35 minutes. Cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out on cake plate and add glaze. GLAZE: Combine 1/2 cup sugar and sherry, bring to a boil and cook until thickened, about 4 minutes. Pour syrup over cake. Mix remaining sugar and cinnamon. When glaze has cooled, place a lace paper doiley over top, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Remove doiley.

my kids all used our house as the hang out house. and it always shocked me how few parents ever called to verify we were home. especially for post-dance sleep overs where there would be 15 to 25 kids sleeping in our rec room. the kids all knew the rules: we got all the car keys. no liquor or smoking. and they were fine. the parents who did call to verify were always appreciative. but if there were 25 kids, maybe 3 or 4 parents would call to verify. it suprised me.
my younger is the same way, DR. :-) The only things that get him up happily in the morning are his girlfriend and (in the past) jazz band. Of course now that he is an adult, the decision is up to him.

i was pretty strict. my kids knew the limits well. and i kept to them. once you break rules and are inconsistant this is an issue. then they push and push and push. so whatever you decide, remember: if he does go he will expect to be allowed to go again and again and will be very persistent about it. make it clear what the issue is. it is not that it is with a girl and friend, or her family. it is not the movies. it is only the lateness of the night before school. period.

ruru - teaching here in UK has been pretty unrewarding for some years now. Not talking about the money, but the rules, restrictions, goals set. None of them benefit the kids or the teachers. A lot of my contemporaries did go into teaching, some are school heads now and many more have left the profession in recent years. My children's contemporaries have also tried this path and most have left.
